I’ve spent most of my life being the strong one. The dependable one. The one who works harder, carries more, and never asks for help.
Everything I do is for my daughter and the life I’m determined to build for us. It may not be perfect, but it’s safe. Stable. Ours.
Then River moves home.
He looks at me like I’m more than the woman holding everything together. Like maybe I deserve someone who stays.
And for the first time in years, I wonder if letting someone stay might not break me after all.
River
Baseball was my whole life.
But when the career ends and the future I thought I had disappeared with it, I find myself back home trying to figure out who I am without the game—and what I still want.
A family. A place to belong. Something real.
Then I met Ivy and Vivian.
They’re messy and stubborn and stronger than anyone should have to be—and somewhere between bedtime stories, T-ball practices, and quiet moments that feel too easy, I realize something I never expected.
I don’t just want a future anymore. I want theirs.
Every book I have a new favorite in this series….this book is no different EXCEPT I think she saved the best for last…. River was the side character you rooted for in every book…the best brother & the best friend….you just can’t help but want the best for him….then we actually get to meet him…that boy stole my heart from page 1….oh to be Ivy Ivy wasn’t to hard to get to know…with the women in her life from Cedar Ridge she didn’t have a chance…granted she had built those walls up high & strong…good thing those women came with all the right tools to make them crumble….& her daughter, Vivian, was adorable of course….I love when an author writes a child to act like a child….that kid makes everyone want to be her best friend… Life just isn’t fair sometimes…with that said make sure to have your tissues handy….you know it’s coming but it can still be a lot to handle….as someone who lost a parent at a young age I felt every bit of it but it was definitely written well… Now to the good stuff….the spice was hot!!! River definitely knew what he was doing…& Ivy learned well to ask for exactly what she needed….there was a ton of plot but the spice was in point… I’m sad to see this series end…I’m going to miss all of the characters but this is a series I could read several times no problem
Heartbreakingly beautiful . That summed up this book!!
Their love story was everything ! But behind their story was an amazing friendship. Families , friends and strangers became one unit. They showed love and support in the moments of joy and in the moments of sorrow . Grief was a heavy topic in this book. Grief from losing the future that was once in River’s grasp. The loss of a family Ivy was once a part of . And the grief of the community with supporting a loved one through her battle with cancer. Both carried emotional scars and I was in awe in how they overcame their battles.
Ivy was a definition of a strong independent woman ! She faced hardship and found the joy in the darkness . She loved , she cared but her biggest flaw was accepting help. But this friendship group was ready to break that boundary. She was a perfect match for River. He shared the same thought .. But was unlucky in love . He fell first and hard and he was ready and determined to prove his words meant something . They held true . One had walls so high to protect herself and her daughter while the other was ready to tear them down.
I can’t tell you how much I LOVED this book!! Very heavy on the found family trope and I LOVE IT!!! The struggles they faced , they faced them together , with love and support and that’s a friendship group of love to be a part of
I will say to check triggers as there is mention of a parent death on page but although it was heartbreaking this author did it with compassion , empathy and whole lot of love which i totally respect and admire. I laughed , I smiled and I sobbed . This was an amazing read ! I saw a quote that said “Grief is the price we pay for love” and this book is the perfect example .
The pacing was perfect , the spice was delicious and the emotions rollercoaster got me ! Etta, you really have a way with words because you kept breaking my heart one moment while making me smile the next ! You really gave this series the perfect ending !! 💙I can’t believe it’s over !😭😭😭
Wandering Home by Etta Lane is the fourth installment in the Wanderland series, and it is a deeply moving story that lingers with you long after the final page. Because of the heavy theme surrounding loss due to cancer, I truly needed some time to let the story settle in before putting my thoughts into words, but it was worth every single moment.
The story follows Ivy, a fiercely independent single mother doing everything she can to provide a secure life for her young daughter, Vivian. Enter River, a former professional baseball player returning to his roots after stepping away from the game. When their paths cross in a tight-knit community, River steps up in unexpected ways, forcing Ivy to realize that allowing someone to share the load might just make her stronger.
What I Loved - Heartwarming dynamics: The connection between River and Ivy's daughter is absolute perfection. The sweet everyday moments and supportive interactions added a layer of tenderness that made my heart melt. - Mature Communication: It was incredibly refreshing to read about main characters who handle their emotions and challanges with maturity. Instead of relying on miscommunication, the author gives us real, layered growth as they navigate their respective paths. - The Comforting Small-Town Atmosphere: The sense of community in this book is wonderful. The support system surrounding the characters creates a warm, safe space that beautifully elevates the entire reading experience.
Things for Consideration - Heavy Emotional Themes: The plot deals with the lingering grief and aftermath of losing a loved one to cancer. While the story is ultimately full of hope and healing, readers who are sensitive to these specific themes should approach the book with the right mindset. - Series Context: While this is the fourth book in the series, it works perfectly well as an interconnected standalone. I jumped in without reading the first three books and followed the main romance easily, though you will inevitably miss out on some of the nuances and background history regarding the broader friend group.
Final Verdict and Recommendations I give this beautiful book a well-deserved 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads). I highly recommend it for fans of heartfelt small-town stories and beautifully written single-mom romances. It is the perfect match for readers who love low-angst, character-driven narratives centered on second chances and the beauty of a found family.
Disclosure I received an eARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I don’t even know where to start with Wandering Home… except to say I felt everything. And I mean that in the best, most soul-hitting way.
Etta Lane has always had a way of writing characters who feel real, but this one? This one stayed with me. Knowing this is the last book in the series made every moment hit a little deeper, a little softer, a little harder all at once.
Ivy absolutely wrecked me in the quietest way. That kind of strength—the kind where you carry everything without asking for help—is so real it almost hurts to read. You can feel the weight of her world in every decision she makes, all for her daughter and the life she’s trying to build. And the way River sees her? Not just as someone surviving, but someone worthy of being loved and supported… yeah, that got me. And River… his journey felt just as raw. Losing the identity he built his life around and trying to piece together what comes next? There’s something so vulnerable about that. Watching him find meaning again—not just in life, but in Ivy and Vivian—felt so genuine and earned.
What I loved most is how this story didn’t rush anything. It lives in the small moments: bedtime routines, everyday chaos, those quiet in-between spaces where something real starts to grow. It’s messy, it’s tender, it’s complicated—and that’s exactly why it works. Etta Lane has this way of pulling emotion out of you when you least expect it, and I was fully in tears by the end. Not the devastating kind—the kind that feels like release, like healing, like coming home right along with the characters.
This book is about love, yes—but also about trust, second chances, and letting yourself believe that something good can stay. And honestly? It’s the perfect goodbye to a series that’s felt like home all along. 💛📖
Wandering Home, book four in the Wanderland series, is written by the wonderful Etta Lane. This series has been deeply emotional, and I don’t know if I am ready for it to end. This book explores healing, vulnerability, and the beauty of building a chosen family.
The book focuses on River and Ivy. River, defined by a need to provide and nurture, finds in Ivy a partner who allows him to shed this performative persona that he maintained during his professional baseball career. Ivy, having spent years guarded and hardened by her past experiences, learns that trusting someone is not a sign of weakness. River’s desire to care for Ivy is never controlling or condescending, but rather, it is the manifestation of his love. Ivy’s instinct to isolate when she becomes vulnerable is a challenge, but she learns to accept what River and the community have to offer.
I adore the found family aspect of this book. It beautifully captures the shift from a lonely struggle to the embrace of a huge support system. In this book, family is defined not by biology but by friendship and emotional support. Ivy and River’s diverse friend group not only provides the support they need but also serves as a mirror for their growth. They are transparent about their past traumas and future fears.
So emotional. This book reminds us of the importance of emotional intelligence and the strength of found family. While I have a very loving family, I have also built a strong community/tribe that I can turn to when I need support, encouragement, and love, which I sometimes long for.
Thanks to Etta Lane for gifting me an eARC of Wandering Home. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was so excited to receive a copy of Wandering Home, couldn’t wait to read River’s story. After reading it I honestly can’t say enough good things about it, you definitely need to get this book as soon as it’s released on May 5th! In true Etta fashion the book is full of wonderful characters that tug at your heartstrings (and one that makes you want to scream at her stupidity in letting a guy like River go!) and sucks you in with every page making you NEED to know what happens next. I read a lot of books but rarely do I find one that makes me not be able to put it down until I see how things end, but this one sucked me in so much that I stayed up until two in the morning to finish reading it, I honestly couldn’t put it down (yes, it was so worth it!). River is such a great guy, you really need to see him find his HEA once you start reading, and as a mom I can relate so much to Ivy’s love for her daughter. Little Vivian steals the show though with her crazy comments and precocious ways that will make you laugh hysterically! She’s just so darn cute!!! 🤣 Because you get so vested in the characters it’s a tear jerker (definitely have a box of tissues handy), but the sad part is written in such a sweet way that you’ll find yourself smiling and crying all at the same time. The spice 🌶️ level is fabulous, Etta really knows how to heat things up in her books (if you haven’t read Safe With Us yet by Etta that should be the next book on your TBR list!). I’m so sad to see the series come to an end, but can’t wait to see what Etta has for us next! 😀
I honestly don’t even know how to put into words how much I loved this book. This story had me feeling every single emotion possible. I don’t cry over books often at all, but this one absolutely broke me in the best way!
Being an ARC reader for the entire Wonderland series has been such a cool and special experience, and getting to read this final book early honestly made it even more emotional for me. I’ve been attached to these characters for so long, so seeing everything come together felt really special and bittersweet.
River and Ivy’s story was beautiful, emotional, comforting, and full of so much love. It felt like one of those love stories that truly awakens the soul. Even through the heavier moments in the book, there was still warmth, hope, laughter, and so much heart woven into every chapter.
The friendships and sense of family in this book were honestly one of my favorite parts. Everyone showed up for each other in such real and meaningful ways, and it made the story feel so genuine and comforting.
There are definitely emotional topics throughout the book, so I’d recommend checking trigger warnings beforehand, but everything was written with so much care and emotion. You can tell Etta Lane poured her heart into this story.
I laughed, cried, smiled, stressed, cried some more, and loved every second of it! I’m genuinely so sad this series is over, but I can’t think of a more perfect ending for Wonderland. 🤍
“There’s someone out there who will give your soul rest.”
I have to start off by saying how amazing Etta is! Like the coolest most genuine human! I had the pleasure of beta reading this story and it was my first from her. When I tell you I loved this story I mean this was a SOLID 5 🌟 read for me.
I cried, laughed, swooned, and devoured this from start to finish. River is like the most perfect MMC and the definition of “if he wanted to he would.” I think what made me love this story the most was that it felt so real and raw. The characters weren’t a fantasy but souls that made you feel what they felt and gave you hope in love of all forms.
I read A LOT and have enjoyed so many stories but it is very rare to have me actually sobbing or feeling so much for a character that when the book ends it’s as though you said goodbye to friends/family. This story had me needing a moment to reflect. I just loved it.
This is technically the fourth book in the series but I can confidently say you can read it just fine as a standalone but heads up… you will want to go back and read the rest so if you haven’t already I would just start at book one!
I am devastated that this series is over. Etta is by far my favourite author, and I will forever recommend her books. At this point, I don’t even read the blurb anymore, I just know I’m going to be obsessed.
Etta’s writing is effortless with characters that feel real and a story that stays with you long after you’ve finished.
I laughed, I swooned, I questioned my own life choices… honestly, the emotional range this book put me through should come with a warning label. The chemistry? Off the charts. The tension? Illegal. The moments that had me grinning like an absolute idiot at my phone? Far too many to count.
River and Ivy’s story was beautifully written, even if I did need a few tissues!
Fair warning: you will get attached, you will pick a favourite character (and defend them like it’s your full-time job), and you will absolutely lose sleep because “just one more chapter” is a lie.
Highlight of this book? When Viv asked River if she could call him daddy😭 I sobbed.
ARC Spoiler Free Review: I don’t even know where to begin. Have tissues ready!!!
I have been looking forward to Rivers story since it was first teased and boy was the best saved for last! This man is a green flag all day every day and the partner everyone deserves! Ivy starts out as our little storm cloud and transforms into the rainbow after the storm. She’s beautiful and so incredibly strong. The absolute best mother any child could have!
I couldn’t find anything negative to say if I tried about this series and when I tell you the drama/conflict that occurs in this story (as well as each book before this one) had me feeling so nervous. I’m so glad it resolved the way it did, I was petrified it would go a different way and I was bracing myself for where it would all go wrong. I was prepared to be disappointed in the MMC and even the FMC if neither of them communicated throughout the conflict but damn was I wrong. This was absolutely the best way to say goodbye to Cedar Ridge and the characters that feel like family! Another 5 ⭐️ read from Etta Lane!
Wandering Home is a sweet small-town romance. You will fall in love with the characters and the story-line. This is the 4th book in the Wanderland series, but you can read as a standalone, but the other characters and couples from the previous series do make appearances which is a pleasant surprise.
River is a retired MLB player who just got out of a very toxic relationship and moves back home to enjoy retired life and take care of his ailing mother. Ivy is a single mom raising a 4 year old little girl and is the in home nurse for River’s mom. Sparks begin to fly when River and his golden retriever personality starts to help and take care of both Ivy and her daughter.
If you love books with heartbreak, strong love, found family, and witty banter, then “Wandering Home” should be your next read!
I read this in one day, I just couldn't put it down. I immediately fell in love with River & Ivy and how they both had been hurt in past relationships but how they navigated their futures differently.
Ivy's a single mother to the sweetest little girl around, working as a home health nurse to many clients - including Evelyn, a sweet grandma.
River is a retired baseball player looking for his second chance at love after being scored by his cheating ex.
When they meet, Ivy is immediately put off because 'famous athletes' are all the same. River doesn't let that stop him, though, and their story of falling in love is so sweet and swoon worthy.
Beware the ending, have tissues ready!

Such a gentle and affectionate romance, softly and emotionally showcasing how two people get all that they deserve and more. After his life is turned upside down, retired professional baseball player River heads home to reflect. He doesn’t expect the whirlwind of Ivy, his mother’s nurse, and her little girl, to come swooping into his life when he needed it most…reigniting his dreams of family and fatherhood. Ivy didn’t expect the stability, care and love that came with River. Their connection was swift but secure, compassionate and passionate, and swoony sigh… just the sweetest. I adored all different ways family and found family was represented in their story, and am so content with the conclusion of the Wanderland series. 4.25 stars Thanks to the author for the eARC
Review of advanced reader copy received from the author
This is the very first book (yes, I know this is book four in the series🙈) that I've read from Etta Lane and it certainly won't be the last.
I loved it!
What a truly beautifully written small town romance.
There are some hard-hitting moments in this book; emotional to read if you've experienced or are experiencing the same yourself. So, beware the content warnings
There is so much empathy, emotion and humour in this book, it's impossible to not enjoy it.
And the chemistry and spice between River and Ivy....phew 🔥
Once the tears have stopped falling, I'm off to read the rest of this series!
A prefect ending to the series! I’m sad it’s over but I’ve enjoyed every second. I loved River just as much as I thought (maybe even more). Ivy’s story is all about being determined and resilient and not letting just anyone in her life, especially when she has sweet Vivian to care for and protect. River’s story is about enjoying the little things and finding your way home, regardless of what that looks like or where it is or who it’s with. This story is equal parts sweet and sexy and heartwarming and heartbreaking. Stock up on tissues!
Thank you to Etta Lane for allowing me to arc read this amazing story for an honest review in return!

River & Ivy’s story absolutely wrecked me in the best way! It gave me so much more than I expected. Watching everything they faced and overcame felt raw, real, and deeply emotional.
This book really shines with its found family dynamic. The bonds, the growth, the unwavering support… it all felt so genuine and pulled me right in.
Between the age gap, that golden retriever x black cat chemistry, a strong single mom, and the ultimate protector/provider energy, it hits every trope perfectly.
I’m honestly still not over it.
This is definitely one to add to your TBR and save on your Goodreads!
I was lucky enough to be part of the ARC team to read this book before its release, and below are my honest thoughts!.
Review: this book….. firstly if you’ve recently lost a loved one please do not read… as someone who’s dad passed 5 years ago ago, this book tore me open, spit me out and then put me back together. This book is the HEA for every single parent. I cannot say enough good things about this book or this entire series. This review is so hard to right because it’s been days since finishing it and I’m still gutted (in the best way possible). It’ll make you kick you feet, squeal, and sob. Thank you Etta for the absolute heartbreak that was this book 😭❤️
Wooooow how is this the last book 😭😭😭 I absolutely loved this series so much and this was a brilliant book to end on.
River & Ivy book was everything and more!!! They truly went through it all together and learnt so much on the way. If you love the found family trope, then this book is definitely for you! Get your tissue box out too because you're going to need it. The last chapters 🥹 I just can't put into words how much I loved this story. If you haven't read the series yet then pleaseeeeee add them to your TBR
Wow, it took me a few days to collect my thoughts because of so many emotions. I really enjoyed every moment of Wandering Home. I eat up a single-parent trope every time, and this one hit me right in my feels. The pace was perfect, and the story was beautifully written. I laughed, cried, melted, and swooned...so naturally it was 5 stars, and I highly recommend. I am glad I signed up to early read before meeting Etta in May because now I'll be able to appreciate her that much more <3
This was my first books from this author and I can honestly say that I will be adding more of their books my TBR!
Heartbreakingly beautiful is how I would describe this book.
The relationship between Viv and River was so real, and so sweet.
The characters are beautifully written, I laughed, I cried (it was more of a full body sobbing honestly). I got attached to characters I did not think I would. I didn't want to put the book down honestly.
This is the 4th installment of the Wanderland series and it might have been Etta Lane's best so far. This one focuses on River and Ivy. They learn to be their true authentic selves and lean on the other to make each other whole in the most complete way. Learning to trust someone and let go to be your whole self is the best lesson of the book and one that I think is a wonderful lesson to take and apply in real life as well.
Thank you Etta Lane for the advanced copy of this book, the review is mine.
What a stunning emotion provoking conclusion to the Wanderland series. I never expected to fall in love with River James and replace Jake as my number one guy in the series but I did. As much as I loved the MC he wasn’t the star of the book for me it was sweet little 4 year old Vivian aka Viv, that little one is too precious for words! My favorite part of the book that had me laughing out loud and having to read it out loud” “Your mom says you’re nice, but my mom says you agogant.” “Arrogant? Your mom says I’m arrogant?”
This book will have you reaching for the tissues and holding your side from laughing, you have been warned! Thank you so much to Etta Lane for having me on her arc team for the series it has been an amazing ride and I hope we come back to this little community one day!
Oh my gosh, this book was amazing. My emotions were all over the place, you will definitely need a box of tissues to hand when reading this book. That's all I'm saying. I'm not giving anything away, the situations surrounding illness were handled so delicately and well it was a pleasure to read. Get this book on your TBR
I was an ARC reader for this book and this is my independent review.
I am honored to have been able to read this book before its release. It was so good! The Author done a fabulous job with the story line and I balled at the end. Im sad this series is over, but I can't wait for more books to come. Her books are always so easy to read and captivate you from start to finish.
River was all the green flags! He was too good to be true just like his brother Thoren. He definitely went through a life changing event but when he least expected it he found his person! He made sure that he would win Ivy and her daughter Vivian. Man did he pull out all the stops. I absolutely loved this couple so much and cant beleive this series is over!!
Sometimes, it takes going back to where everything started to see where you’ve been and where you’d like to go from there. Extremely relatable characters whose stories tug at your heart and make you want to keep them safe. A heartfelt storyline of finding “home” in other people. Such an amazing read.
So happy to finally have River’s story! Love everything about this series and this small town. Definitely tackled some difficult topics in this one, but it true Etta fashion did it with humor, banter, and spice!
River is the sweetest! Ivy’s love for her daughter and always putting her first, it’s so relatable. This was a cute little small town romcom and I ate it up finished in one day couldn’t put it down.
I’m still coming to terms with the fact that the series is over, so please be nice to me 👁️👄👁️
I was privileged to be an ARC reader for the Wandering Series since book one, and I’m fairly certain I started DMing Etta while reading Thor and Lily (book one) and asking (hassling!) when River was getting his book!
Etta’s writing is so beautiful and emotional, it pulls you in without any effort and, ooh boy did River and Ivy get me emotional!
Ivy is the new-to-town single mum who is used to being strong, capable and independent and making sure she gives her daughter the best role model to look up to. Ex-pro baseball player River wants nothing more than to find his forever someone and provide for his family, it was exactly what he thought was in store for him. Next minute, his entire life implodes in front of his eyes and he finds himself moving back to his home town and becoming the new head coach of the Cedar Ridge Tiny Timberwolves under 6’s baseball team.
The honesty that Ivy wears on her sleeve about how hard it is to be not only a mother, but a single mother doing it on her own, is so empowering and honest! I loved that it wasn’t written like it’s all a walk in the park with rainbows and daisies!
The chemistry and the push and pull that River and Ivy have is SO DAMN HOT 🥵trust me🙂↕️🫦
The story does continue with plot lines from previous books, and there are heavy topics in this so be gentle with yourselves and check the TW before diving in…please ensure amble tissue stock, tears will happen (I have multiple videos of me ugly crying while reading if you need proof)!
Its bittersweet that the series is over, but hopefully this isn’t the last we see of Cedar Ridge ❤️🩹🤞🏼
