I was thrilled to receive the conclusion of the the Seven Isles duology begun with Starling's Weave courtesy of the author and publisher via BookSirens. As with the first book, there were many areas where I wanted more: more continuity, more magical systems, more character development. I was pleased with the arc overall, but many of the sequences felt rushed. The twists were pretty well foreshadowed, but one major spoiler spooled out in a totally unexpected way. I was very happy to see a continuation of Nieve's magical abilities without the occult emphasis. The romance is as advertised, foremost and sweet. The chapters were pleasantly short, though the book on the whole took longer to read than normal. Readers who are looking for this kind of fantasy should enjoy the magical adventure and familiar dungeon crawl tropes. The hero may leave pirate fans wanting, as the treatment is more Killian Jones than Captain Barbossa—Bob and Larry rather than John Silver—but on the whole, there is action and danger. The climactic battle reminded me of Shadow Scale and similarities to Eona. If you loved Starling's Weave, you'll definitely want to read it's conclusion.
This book is the follow-up to Starling’s Weave—and if you haven’t read that one, go get it! It picks up at the end of that book with Manseray and Nieve together. But Nieve has trouble controlling her newfound power and worries she’ll do more harm than good. The two part ways so she can learn control while he’s off on his own mission.
There’s a kraken, secrets, betrayals, action, adventure, and romance. Honestly, who could ask for anything more?
This is more his story than hers, and it was wonderful. I loved it just as much as I loved the first book. If you love pirates, romance, danger, and secrets, then this is for you.
I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review.
This is the second installment following Starlings Weave!
To say this book starts with a BANG is an understatment. I really loved everything about this. Its got secrets, betrayals, and of course action and adventure! If you love all of those things pick up both these books now!
