When your soulmate's a serial killer, true love gives 'touch her and die' a whole new meaning—but all the red flags in the world won't stop Lucy from being with the man of her dreams in this delightfully twisted dark romcom. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of a serial killer, Roxie wants one thing and one thing her rescuer's phone number. Too bad he's disappeared into the night, returning to his blood-soaked life hunting the men who give murder a bad name. Well, unluckily for him, Roxie loves a challenge…The last thing infamous killer Max Ruscombe wants is to be saddled with an unhinged stalker determined to make him out to be some kind of hero. But when Roxie puts herself in danger to draw him out, he has no choice but to kidnap the maddening woman and teach her a lesson she'll never forget. Only instead of showing fear, Roxie…kind of loves it. She's never had a hotter experience in her life. Sure Max is a coldblooded killer, but every guy has his flaws—and besides, it's not like the people he murders are innocent. In fact, maybe what this murderer needs is a woman's touch! As the pair of them join forces, Max and Roxie discover that dating in the modern world comes with its challenges…especially when one of them is a sociopath and the other just wants her Happily Ever After no matter who she has to stab along the way.
This has its moments, but readers will be divided on whether the MC is funny or annoying. The premise is goofy, so it makes sense that it doesn't take itself seriously, but by the end I was tired of the schtick.
Author does a good job of being lighthearted and leaning in to the utter ridiculousness of the concept while being sensitive at the right times.
The extra comment about the cover scaring people away in the content warning at the front of the book was very unnecessary and came across as belittling and felt like the author/publisher was making fun of content warnings (which are very important and necessary for titles like this that contain potentially triggering content). Content warnings don't need a caveat or quippy line to justify them, they should simply be listed for the benefit of all.
Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca for having this title available to read on Edelweiss in advance.
A big thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read this arc.
Serial killer romance is having a moment and this was a fun, fresh addition. I found the chemistry and the banter between the main characters to be really cute, but I must say the side characters are where it really was at for me. They made the story come alive.
I love a story that is able to combine a love story and a darker, somewhat stabbier story. Plus, we love a woman who goes after what she wants 👏🏻
No notes. This book was seriously a joy. I don’t often find myself laughing out loud while reading a book but this one had me swooning for an ethical serial killer and doing just that. I’m no better than Roxie apparently. 10/10 you MUST read!
