I flew through Darling, You're Next in one sitting. 😅 This psychological thriller follows two women connected by the same charming man, with one timeline unfolding in the past and the other in the present. Right from the beginning, you know someone is going to die and someone is going to lie, which made it almost impossible for me to stop turning the pages.
I really enjoyed the dual timelines and the steady stream of reveals. The ending caught me by surprise, and I especially loved how the title takes on a whole new meaning once everything comes together. Clever titles always make me happy.
The only reason this isn't a full five stars is that it felt a little long for a fairly straightforward story. It reminded me more of a Freida McFadden thriller than a Karin Slaughter novel—fast, addictive, and just plain fun to read.

once again my auto read author knocks it out the park! i absolutely love the way she writes there’s something so cosy about the words with a heavy contrast of twisty unnerving plots where you’re waiting for the bad thing to happen! 🫣🫣

I expected a full story and was surprised that this was only a chapter preview, but it definitely did its job. It gave just enough to pull me into the story and make me curious about what happens next. The writing immediately grabbed my attention, and now I’m invested in seeing where everything goes. I just wish there had been more because it ended way too soon.

Marlee, you’ve done it again!!
This book was absolutely wild. It had me completely hooked from the very first chapter, and every single time I told myself, “just one more chapter,” I somehow ended up reading five more.
The story follows two women who are both connected to one particular man, and as the past and present timelines unfold through dual POVs, the pieces slowly start falling into place. The whole time you’re convinced you’ve figured it out and know exactly where it’s heading… but nope. Marlee once again proves she’s the queen of twists.
Even when you think you’ve cracked the mystery, she manages to pull the rug right out from under you in a way that never feels predictable. And that ending?! I’m sorry… WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! I genuinely sat there staring at the pages trying to process what I’d just read.
If you’re after a thriller that keeps you guessing right until the very last page, this one absolutely delivers.

I had such high hopes for this book.
For the first 15% or so, I thought I had already figured out the big twist. Then the first-person narration gradually convinced me that I had been completely wrong. As someone who reads a lot of psychological thrillers and has become very good at spotting plot patterns early, I was genuinely excited. Finally, I thought, here was a book that had managed to outsmart me.
I couldn't wait to find out what the truth was, and for most of the novel I was convinced this was heading straight for a five-star rating.
Then I reached the final chapter.
As it turns out, my very first theory had been correct all along.
The problem isn't that I guessed the twist early, because I often do and I am used to it. The problem here is that the narrative spends the next 300 pages repeatedly encouraging the reader to abandon that initial theory through information presented by a first-person narrator that you trust completely because you're in their head, you're with their thoughts and feelings. When the final reveal arrives, I expected a satisfying explanation that would allow me to look back and think, "Of course—that was incredibly clever".
Instead, I was left feeling as though the story had simply withheld or distorted information without fully earning it. I felt like I spent the last two days with a book that was simply telling lies. The final chapter never provided the payoff I was hoping for or adequately explained why everything I had accepted as true throughout the novel fit together with this ending. Rather than feeling surprised, I felt frustrated.
That disappointment hurts even more because I genuinely enjoyed everything else about the book. The characters felt relatable, I was invested in their stories, and I had a great time reading it from beginning to almost the very end.
With a stronger final chapter—one that spent more time unpacking the reveal and demonstrating how all the pieces fit together, if that was ever possible given everything that came before and how it was told—I honestly believe this could have been a five-star read for me.
Instead, it became one of those books I'll remember less for its excellent setup than for an ending that didn't quite deliver on the promise of everything that came before. I will remember the lies.
That said, I still think many readers—especially those who are newer to psychological thrillers—will have a great time with this novel (as did I until I reached the last chapter) and don't walk away from it upset because they were told a lot of lies. If you don't tend to scrutinize every detail or expect every clue to hold up under close examination, there's a lot here to enjoy.

I love the prologue as it sets the tone and the expectation for the story ahead. It introduces the characters and leaves you with intrigue. It is well done to hook you straight away at the beginning of the story.
The first chapter details and builds the story in what appears to be the present time, setting up the story to follow for chapter two, where a new character is introduced and time is thrown back. The characters and their relationship already have you rooting for them. With sadness, that part of you that wants some happiness for these people is invoked.
I enjoyed the switch-ups during each chapter as it moves between the moments, and each is separated, which helps keep you aligned with the train of thought. I thought this was a nice touch. The chapters take time to delve into the characters so you can get to know them and how they know the protagonist within the story.
The character build-up was excellent. There was a lot of time spent building up both girls' stories side by side, and the pace was not racing but steady to keep the pages turning. Part two was where the pace stepped up a gear and characters we had got to know through the girls' entries appeared from their point of view and their role in the tragedies.
The subtle twists and turns were good; they felt authentic and realistic. I only clicked just at the end, before I read the last chapter, what it would be, but it didn't disappoint to find out how and why.
I loved the book. It was really well written, with good pacing, strong characters, and the multiple points of view were well placed and well timed, so it gave good flow and no confusion about whose story you were reading. I would 100 percent recommend it.

Every time I thought I'd figured out where the story was going, Marlee just pulled the rug out from under me and sent me in a completely different direction. I was convinced I knew the truth more than once... and I was wrong every single time.
I absolutely loved the way the story switched up POVs. Slowly uncovering Abby's story while watching Maren become more entangled with Topher created this constant sense of unease. The parallels between the two women were so unsettling, and I found myself questioning every interaction and every little detail. It made it impossible to stop reading because I needed to know what was really happening.
The best part is that nothing felt predictable. It just kept getting more intense and strange, and I was so invested that I kept telling myself "just one more chapter"... which, of course, turned into finishing the whole book.

This is one of those rare thrillers that hooks you from the very first chapter and somehow keeps getting better with every page. I told myself I'd read "just one more chapter" more times than I can count, and before I knew it, it was the middle of the night and I had finished the entire book.
The pacing was flawless and the short chapters made it impossible to put down. Marlee does an incredible job of building suspense without relying on cheap twists, and the constant feeling that something wasn't quite right had me questioning everyone and everything.
The dual timelines were handled brilliantly, gradually revealing the truth without giving too much away. I loved both Maren and Abby's perspectives, and the friendships in this book were just as compelling as the mystery itself. In a story filled with secrets, the unwavering support between the women became the emotional heart of the novel, and I wasn't expecting that to be one of my favourite aspects.
And that ending... I genuinely did not see it coming. I spent the entire book coming up with theories, convinced I'd figured it out, only for the final chapters to completely pull the rug out from under me. Days later, the 2 run in to each other again at a grief counseling session, where she is mourning the loss of her father and he mourns the death of his ex-fiance, Abby. As Maren and Topher's relationship grows, Maren starts seeing eerie similarities between Abby and herself and starts to question whether Abby's death was an accident at all. Maren digs to discover the truth about Topher's past and Abby's death before she finds herself to be the next victim.
I liked this book. This was my first by Marlee Bush and I really enjoyed the writing style. This was quick paced, twisty, infuriating, and kept me guessing. Part 1 is told in dual POV (Abby and Maren), which I really liked but will say the 2 characters had so many similarities that if I didn't remember which viewpoint I was reading, good luck to me as I worked to figure it out. Part 2 (which started like 88% in to the book) is also told from multiple POVs (Topher and some other side characters), which almost felt like maybe there were too many POVs thrown in to the last 10% of the story. I will say the ending twist did surprise me as I had a whole other ending expected for the characters.
Overall, a good phycological thriller I would recommend to readers who want something fast paced with questionable characters.

I will say the ending twist did surprise me as I had a whole other ending expected for the characters.

It took me a while to get into this. The prologue did a good job but then the momentum dropped and I found myself pushing to get through it. I think it started to pick up for me around 30%, but then the pacing was inconsistent again. I found myself constantly annoyed with Abby for putting up with Topher and ignoring literally every red flag. It felt like the character had to be written so dumb in order to make the plot work.
There's a lot of overlap in similarities between Maren and Abby and there were numerous times I kept forgetting whose POV I was in.

This aims perfectly on the story and it shows greatly the toxic love, the helplessness in the woman who falls in love (not in a wrong way but in trusting their partner completely and giving them their first preference and next anything else), some scenes it's creepy, very tense, fast paced one which as I mentioned I'm not able to stop reading until I reached the end. It's so unpredictable, I kept guessing and every time I was wrong.
The end was very satisfying for me and Marlee did a very great job in her writing, she had me hooked from the very first page till the last without losing interest, or getting better but instead as I was reading I became more intrigued.
If you are a fan of twisty, emotional, psychological thriller with a satisfying ending, if you are fab of Frieda, Gillian then this is for you ❤

The book alternates between Maren's present and Abby's past, and Maren's blindness to what's happening around her is genuinely frustrating to read, it's an uncomfortably realistic portrait of how manipulation actually works. Abby had a rough childhood with her mother and the quote "She'd think of her mother who existed in survival mode and by default only taught her how to survive too," really stuck to me as I resonated deeply with her past trauma in childhood.
The ending runs longer than it needs to once the twist lands, but that twist genuinely surprised me and is fairly clued if you're paying attention. The "charming man who isn't what he seems" premise isn't new for the genre, but this book executes it well rather than reinventing it. The ending really took me by surprise!

This was my first book by this author, so I went in with zero expectations and I ended up having a really good time with it. The story follows a woman who meets what seems like the perfect man… only to discover he might have murdered his ex-girlfriend.
This one hooked me pretty quickly. The pacing was fast and the short chapters kept me guessing and on edge. I flew through these pages. The author did a great job of keeping me on my toes without feeling overcomplicated.
My biggest complaint? The main character. She drove me absolutely insane at times. Like… how many red flags are we going to ignore before we start asking questions here??
Around the 80% mark, the story suddenly sped up and felt a little rushed, but it slowed back down just enough to deliver a satisfying ending. I was actually shocked that I guessed the twist because I never do. Even knowing where it was headed didn’t take away from the ending, and there were still a couple of surprises along the way.
Overall, this was a solid thriller, and I’ll definitely be checking out more from this author in the future!

But as their relationship grows, she starts noticing unsettling similarities between herself and Topher's late fiancée, Abby. Told through dual POVs and timelines, the story slowly reveals what really happened.
I guessed the main twist fairly early on, but it didn't take away from the story. I still enjoyed seeing everything unfold, and I liked how it all wrapped up in the end. Overall, a good read that definitely kept my interest.

I rated this a 3.5, but rounded up to 4. Only because the story was at times very confusing because of the constant back and forth between the women in Topher’s life. It jumped back a lot through the stories of Abby and Maren. Abby dated Topher and died, they put him through the wringer and couldn’t get conviction. Maren is the new lady in his life and she’s questioning everything about him, his decisions and his complicated mourning of Abby. They meet in a grief group and there’s a spark. Topher was a hard man to like, jealous and controlling and always with the perfect answer. It was well written, but hard to follow and I almost gave up several times. Glad I pushed through because in the end, everything was explained and you understood, also, the end was quite a shock!! Thank you in advance to NetGalley for the advance copy of this book.

Darling, You're Next is very perfect for fans of the cat and mouse metaphor, I'd say. There are dual timelines as well as POVs, in which we follow two women who both date the same man. Said man, Topher, is your typical white male in appearance and financial bracket sake. This one is both slow burn while maintaining a pretty steady "popcorn thriller" pace. While the twist or denouement aren't difficult to assume or guess,, the outcome isn't a disappointing one. I wanted a little bit more from this one when it comes to the characters, but all in all, I think the Freida comparison is a suitable one. Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark for the eARC! By the final chapters, I was completely invested, and the ending left me shocked in the best way.

When Maren meets Topher, there is an instant connection. When she sees him again in a grief counseling group, it feels like fate. What she doesn't realize is that she shares many similarities to Topher's ex who died under suspicious circumstances years ago. As they get closer, it appears that Abby's death is driving a deeper wedge between them.
I thought this was a good book. I wasn't pulled into it as much as I usually get sucked into mystery books, but it was still an enjoyable read. The ending twist was predictable, but it was an interesting ride to get there nonetheless.
