Angel Sworn #4

Serpent Queen

Rate this book
Time is running out for the Angel Sworn.

Cimree’s restored memories have shattered everything she thought she knew—about her past, her power, and the fate of a dying world. The twisted magic that birthed monstrous abominations is spreading, and she alone understands how to stop the devastation. But knowledge is useless without allies. To save humanity, she must persuade a rival band of Angel Sworn to stand with her—warriors who would rather see her dead and claim dominion over the survivors and the newly blooming Gallows Tree.

At the foot of the impenetrable Tirich Mir mountains lies Koa, one of the last bastions of humankind. There, Cimree, Trinati, and Uorsin hope to rescue the remaining Angel Sworn held captive. Instead, they walk into a trap.

Cimree soon finds herself the victim of a deception set in motion before the Queen Mother’s death. For the fallen ruler named a successor—an heir far more ruthless and calculating than anyone suspected. In the shadowed tunnels, Azra and the others are ensnared in betrayals so intricate that even he cannot unravel them in time.

Alliances will fracture. Truths will be used as weapons. And as monsters close in from every side, the Angel Sworn must decide who they truly are.

A world stands on the brink—waiting to be saved…or destroyed.

This concludes the Angel Sworn series. I can tell it has a lot of tie-ins to Jeff’s other worlds, but I haven’t read that much of his other series yet. Still, it’s totally not necessary to understand or enjoy this series.

In this book, we mostly deal with the angelsworns’ civil war, a traitor, and the golem. It gets pretty apocalyptic.

It’s not a long book, and pacing is steady and never slow. Lots of action and adventure without losing character development. I was genuinely invested in their fates. It has elements inspired by the Bible, Greek mythology, and some other legends I’m less familiar with.

The final book in the Angel Sworn series is a satisfying conclusion that fans of the series are sure to enjoy.

I really appreciate that this book—and this whole series—is clean fantasy, containing no graphic violence, no language, and no spice. It is getting harder to find clean fantasy these days, and I’m glad I can trust Wheeler to always deliver on this front.

Serpent Queen contains lots of religious allegory and terminology: “the refiner’s fire,” characters making covenants over an altar, “perfect love casteth out all fear,” and the concept of someone turning to a pillar of salt if they look back to where they came from. I think it was cool to see the comparisons between the story and real-world Christianity.

At the end of the book, there are many allusions to other series by the author, which I thought were cool hidden connections. You don’t need to have read any of his other books to understand this series, but having that extra knowledge would make the reveals in this series more impactful.

This is not my favorite series by Jeff Wheeler. It’s not bad, but it’s just not my preference, and I can’t fully explain why. I felt very distanced from all of the characters in every book, the emotional moments and major reveals had no impact on me, the setting was hard for me to visualize and not very fleshed out, and overall I just didn’t understand what the intention was behind telling this story.

Overall, I’m happy to finally be done with this series. I would recommend it only to long-time fans of Jeff Wheeler who would appreciate the connections between this book and his other books, or potentially also to readers who like strong religious allegory in their fantasy novels. I won’t be rereading this series, but I do plan to read many other of Wheeler’s series that personally appeal to me a bit more than this one.

Serpent Queen is the conclusion to the Angel Sworn series, which serves as a fascinating prequel and mythology-builder for some of Jeff Wheeler’s other works.

Writing this review was tough because my feelings are so mixed. Cimree and Azra are fantastic, and watching their personal growth and partnership was a highlight of the book. As a long-time fan, I also loved uncovering the Easter eggs that explain the origins of the Leerings and Kenatos.

However, the religious themes felt much more heavy-handed than usual. Where Wheeler’s previous novels integrated faith and ideology organically, adapting the biblical story of Ezekias felt less like a creative allusion and more like a direct, literal translation of scripture into a fantasy setting.

I still deeply appreciate Wheeler's worldbuilding and storytelling, but this series ultimately didn't click for me the way his others have.

As the reader returns to the world of Cimree and Azra in "The Serpent Queen," we find them still fighting to save the world from devastation.

Cimree has finally had her memories restored, but even now with all she recalls, survival is not guaranteed.

Her connection with Azra grows stronger by the day. They are united in trying to save survivors wherever they may be--hiding and fighting against widespread slaughter. Not, however, ONLY by the golem and the other evil mutations.

For the Queen Mother (before her death) named her successor whose identity shocks both Cimree and Azra--a new leader who wants Cimree, Azra and all the remaining Angel Sworn dead.

As the two attempt to fight this new successor, Cimree and her comrades are then betrayed in the unlikeliest way (a "wow" moment for me) by someone in their midst well-trusted--someone who will stop at nothing to gain ultimate power.

Cimree also has learned that there may be, potentially, a way to remove the curse placed on her, which has almost completely isolated her because of her Medusa-like powers--which can destroy her enemies but also kill those she loves. (Dealing with loneliness is also a theme running through the story.)

It is reaffirming to witness Cimree's time with Azra… he loves her despite her horrific appearance (another thematic element in this story). Beside their love for each other, they are also devoted not only to the Angel Sworn, but also to the innocent survivors from all corners of their world who long for a new world no longer filled with fear, suffering and death, but rather one rebuilt by mutual love and cooperation… available to everyone, even those once considered outcasts, IF Cimree, Azra and their compatriots are successful.

As a side note, I found the golem to be a pitiable creature. It is definitely evil and savage, creepily clever, wickedly amused. For all of these things, it is also driven mad by the absolute necessity to be with Cimree, but always (because of its nature) is feared and abhorred (very much like Frankenstein's monster)--and the theme of loneliness is seen here once again.

This book is about hope, love, redemption--and enlightenment, especially for Cimree and Azra. It's about surviving and learning through life's challenges, yet choosing between being destroyed by them or becoming stronger for facing them; and demonstrating care and concern for others despite personal heartache and tragedy.

The book is exciting. The characters continue to be well developed and complex, and the pacing (as alway) is very good.

While I don't think this fourth book of the series was as strong as the previous ones, it was great to spend time with Cimree once more who is a truly admirable character. The plot's twists and turns were a delight!

I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it. Wheeler remains an outstanding writer. And I look forward to his next adventure.

Serpent Queen delivered everything I hoped for—and more. The epic quest for refugees from a fallen city to create a new home, who long for a better way of life, reaches a dramatic and satisfying climax in the fourth and final installment of the Angel Sworn series. Jeff Wheeler once again keeps his readers fully engaged as his characters battle metamorphosed creatures, powerful magic, and enemies both outside their ranks and hidden within. They form unexpected new alliances and come to a deeper understanding of who they are meant to become and why they have endured so much peril and loss.

Wheeler richly develops the characters readers have come to love. As he reveals their past, we gain a clearer understanding of the experiences that shaped them and the choices they make. We witness their growth—physical, emotional, and spiritual—sometimes sharing their anguish over impossible decisions, and at other times celebrating their hard-won victories. Wheeler places his major characters in situations where loyalty, love, and faith demand sacrifice. Fortunately, he balances relentless action with quieter, more reflective moments that deepen relationships and provide meaningful insight into each character's motivations.

Serpent Queen is allegorical storytelling at its finest. Remarkably relevant to our own turbulent times, it is a compelling tale of moral conflict, loss, trust, belief, and the far-reaching consequences of our choices, not only for ourselves but also for those around us, and ultimately, for our society as a whole. To me, this felt like Wheeler’s most philosophical novel to date.

I kept reminding myself, “It’s only fantasy.” Yet it was impossible not to see reflections of our own world and its struggles. Wheeler thoughtfully explores how courageous and compassionate women and men strive to help others recognize their mistakes and find a path beyond division and conflict toward a more hopeful future. If Azra and Cimree had the final word, they would say, “Lasting peace is found through love, trust, mercy, and cooperation.” I couldn’t agree more!

Serpent Queen is so poignant and compelling that I find it difficult to review without venturing into spoiler territory. I want to share it with everyone. What I can say is that by the final page, you will have a much deeper understanding of how the many worlds Wheeler has created interconnect—past, present, and future—and where the Angel Sworn world fits within the grand tapestry. The revelations were so satisfying that they left me eager to revisit Wheeler’s earlier series with this new perspective. And I anticipate future novels that further deepen these interwoven worlds with new revelations.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This review contains spoilers for Serpent Queen. ⚠️

I went into Serpent Queen with high expectations after Queen Mother, and for the most part, Jeff Wheeler absolutely delivered. The first half of this book was fantastic. The twists kept coming, the world continued to expand in interesting ways, and I found myself constantly wanting to read just one more chapter. The reveal of Darcia as the spy genuinely caught me off guard, and I loved seeing how the statues were utilized as both a security measure and a resource. It was one of those details that made the world feel even more alive and well thought out.

Another aspect I really enjoyed was learning the truth about the Voided Key and what it actually meant. It was one of those reveals that recontextualized things in a satisfying way and added another layer to the story's mythology. Moments like that are why I love Jeff Wheeler's books—he has a knack for planting ideas early and paying them off later in ways that feel both surprising and inevitable.

The journey to Koa and the mission to save the imprisoned Angel Sworn was another highlight. The story felt adventurous, dangerous, and engaging, and Cimree and Azra remained characters I was deeply invested in throughout the novel.

Unfortunately, the final portion of the book didn't land quite as strongly for me. Once Azra was injured and sent to the Garden, the pacing and overall feel of the story seemed to shift. The first half was full of discovery, tension, twists, and constant forward momentum. The ending, by comparison, felt much more subdued. We go from the middle of a major battle to Azra being healed, retrieving the staff, addressing the curse, getting married, and wrapping up the story in fairly quick succession.

What disappointed me wasn't that the story ended happily—I actually enjoyed where the characters ended up. Rather, the excitement and sense of adventure that made the first half so compelling seemed to fade away. The ending felt more focused on tying up plot threads than maintaining the momentum that had me completely hooked earlier in the book.

Even with those criticisms, I still thoroughly enjoyed Serpent Queen. The worldbuilding remains excellent, the twists were some of my favorite in the series, and Cimree and Azra's journey was one I was happy to follow to the end. While I found the final stretch less engaging than the incredible first half, this was still a very satisfying conclusion overall and another reminder of why Jeff Wheeler remains one of my favorite authors.

I really enjoyed The Serpent Queen. What I enjoyed most was the imaginative way Jeff Wheeler wove together threads from several of his different worlds. The connections (something he alluded to in earlier series and has been actively doing in some of the later ones) are genuinely satisfying, and never feel forced or like they’re there just for the sake of tying stuff together.

Another of my favourite aspects of the book continues to be the relationship between Cimree and Azra. I really like that their relationship wasn't driven by the usual cycle of misunderstandings or unnecessary romantic drama. Instead, their relationship was built on trust, loyalty, and genuine growth and the tension came from the challenges they faced.

I also appreciated the moral complexity throughout the novel. Characters are faced with genuinely difficult choices, and the consequences aren't always straightforward. Yet Wheeler never loses sight of the idea that there is still a real distinction between right and wrong. People make mistakes, circumstances are complicated, but goodness, sacrifice and integrity still matter. That's something I don't think fantasy always gets right - the balance between acknowledging life's complexities without slipping into moral cynicism—is probably the biggest reason I love his books.

The ending was great in that it delivered on the promises made throughout the books and I admired the way it both concluded these stories while setting the scene for more to come. My only real complaint is that I wanted the ending to breathe a little more. After everything these characters had been through, I would happily have read another chapter or two just spending time with them. I especially would have loved to see more of the new dynamics between some of the characters and to linger a bit longer with supporting characters like Jodocus, whose story felt like it deserved just a little more page time.

Overall, I thought The Serpent Queen was a really satisfying conclusion to the Angel Sworn series. It tied together so many threads while still delivering strong characters and thoughtful themes. Finishing the book left me with that bittersweet feeling of being happy with the ending but not quite ready to leave the world behind—which is probably one of the best compliments I can give a fantasy novel.

🐍 You cannot see now in the dark, when only the moon and the stars give us their meager portion. Wait for the sun to rise. And then you will see it all clearly. You will see what truly is. And you will no longer weep that you spent a flicker of your existence in the dark. 🐍

What an amazing conclusion to this fantastic epic fantasy series! It has betrayal from within, danger from many sides, and a beautiful romance with multiple plot twists. I don’t even know what to say! It perfectly blends the Bible and its truths with mythology in an amazing fantasy world.

Cimree, Azra, and their friends are united and determined to save as many people as they can. Cimree’s bravery, strength, and steadiness while facing all the danger was incredible. I loved that she sought “the Oldknow” for guidance and listened for direction. She was willing to obey and do whatever she could to save humanity. Azra’s intelligence, cunning, and tender care shine through. I loved his growth and the peace and contentment he’s found. I loved his commitment to saving the Angle Sworn and their allies. His love for Cimree is deep and unfailing. Cimree and Azra’s romance moves into the spotlight in this book and we get to see them embrace their deep, abiding love.

A few more quotes:
“I want you for my husband. I want to explore this wide world with you. The only reason I haven’t asked you yet is that I’ve wanted to make sure everyone will be safe. I think convincing the angel sworn to join us would be more difficult if they believe we violated the law of celibacy. That’s the only reason I’ve held back.” “It’s a thoughtful reason. You are worth waiting for.”

🩵 Cimree had healed his heart. Had given him a purpose once again. 🩵

🩷 Perfect love casts out fear. And she realized that she and Azra shared that kind of love. It was a love of purity, of innocence, of shared tribulation, of having their hearts welded together. 🩷

Note: This is book four in the Angel Sworn series and will be best enjoyed after reading the first three books.

I want to thank Jeff Wheeler and Oliver-Heber Books for this ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of Serpent Queen.

Will Cimree and Azra be able to unite the Angel Sworn and save everyone from the twisted abominations destroying the world? Or will a secret threat lay a trap that keeps them from being able to do what needs to be done? Serpent Queen by Jeff Wheeler is the fourth, and final book in the “Angel Sworn” series. In this book, we get to see the final conclusion to Cimree and Azra’s story, but also the beginning to so much more. Will Cimree’s curse be lifted? Will they finally be able to be with one another in peace? Or will everything they know be destroyed forever?

I have really enjoyed seeing Cimree’s journey of self discovery and Azra’s story of redemption. Both of them had so much to work through and grow from and they were able to through lots of stops and hiccups. What is most beautiful about this story is how everyone has the chance to redeem themselves if they so choose. No one is forced to simply be “evil.” Wheeler helps us to truly understand where each character’s motivations come from to the point we can truly empathize with their situations.

I also enjoyed seeing the different historical tidbits brought into the story for those of us who love historical fiction. I’ve never really classified a book as historical fantasy, but this series would definitely fall into that kind of category! Something else Wheeler does well is describing the scenery and how characters get from one place to another. The worlds he has created are absolutely mesmerizing!

Something that is really phenomenal about Wheeler’s books/series is that they all are interconnected. There are so many nuggets and easter eggs from each of his stories that it creates such a fun reading experience! And that he is able to so completely keep the different stories straight is truly amazing!

As I try to avoid spoilers for earlier books in the series, I will leave this review where it is. Serpent Queen by Jeff Wheeler is appropriate for young adult age group and above. There is no cursing, only mild romance (kissing), and mild violence, none really described in detail on page. This story is great for anyone who loves a bit of historical easter eggs mixed into their fantasy! I really loved this series and am excited to continue reading through the rest of his books!

Jeff Wheeler is so gifted at epic storytelling. One of my favorite parts of reading his books is trying to figure out where each series fits into the larger tapestry of his worlds. I found myself constantly forming theories as I read, and Serpent Queen definitely didn’t disappoint.

I love the twists and turns, but even more than that, I love watching the characters grow. Jeff has a way of revealing unexpected layers to each character that make them feel so real. Just when I think I have someone figured out, another side of them emerges that completely changes my perspective.

I’m a sucker for myth, magic, and all things fantasy, and Jeff is truly a master at weaving those elements together. I especially appreciated some of the subtle biblical themes woven throughout this final book. They were beautifully done, thought-provoking, and honestly not something I was expecting at times.

And that ending… wow. The characters we meet had my mind doing cartwheels! I was so excited piecing together new origins and connections to his other series. That’s honestly one of my favorite things about Jeff’s writing. Everything is so thoughtfully planned, and the easter eggs spanning different worlds, timelines, and series are absolutely incredible. Every time I finish one of his books, I feel like I’ve uncovered another piece of a much larger puzzle, and I can’t wait to see where it all leads next. That’s another thing… his endings never really feel like endings because it feels like something else is brewing in the background, looove!

I’m so ready to start from book 1 again!! If you’re a Jeff Wheeler fan, do yourself a favor and read this now- you won’t regret it. Thanks Jeff for sharing your gifts and talents with the world!

Serpent Queen was an enjoyable read. It was fast paced, action packed, and high stakes which meant it was hard to put down. The feel of this book was very reminiscent of the Wretched of Muirwood series, so anyone who has loved that series will likely love this one as well. There are also tie ins to other Wheeler worlds which is always exciting for longtime fans- although you can be a new reader and still understand and love it!

My favorite books to read are character driven books and I loved the development of the relationships and the characters. These characters are thrown into the fire which makes this book both agonizing and exciting to read.

There is also the introduction of a new character whom I liked immediately. I loved how the characters found creative ways to work through their trials. I especially liked reading how different characters utilized their unique affinities to various animals.

After reading this book it was really hard for me to figure out how to rate it. As I put it down my first instinct was that I liked it. So if anything is to be taken from this review it should be that. Yet at the same time, there were parts of the plot that didn’t have as satisfying as a resolution. Things that I have been waiting for four books to be addressed still felt as if they were hanging there. I still have questions. There were also some tangential aspects of the ending that I did not like. I do not want to spoil anything, but as I finished there were some parts near the end that were not my favorite. That is why I have rated this book three stars. I did enjoy it, it was a fast and fun read and this series introduced me to a new and exciting world and incredible characters. I just have some hesitations about the ending.

This was an unusual book. It grafts a conclusion to this series on as a prequel to the Mirrowen series, including a brief epilogue that further grafts in the Grave Kingdom series. That is actually where I started, so it came full circle for me. However, if you are starting here, so many graftings across time and space might leave you feeling a tad tingly.

The book itself felt pretty light on intrinsic substance. A lot of the tie-togethers necessitated that the characters are suddenly handed godlike powers; they literally wave a magic wand to fix everything. That's simplifying it a lot, but it made me lose interest in Cimree and her civilization almost entirely. I basically just skimmed the rest of the book to find out what happened.

I typically love the Jeff Wheeler blend of fantasy and religiously oriented stories. I don't mind alternate history but don't typically care for mythology. Perhaps this book was just a little heavy on the mythology, so I liked it a little less. But the thing that killed it for me is that the characters get so wrapped in mythological plot armor that I just didn't learn anything about my own life from reading it anymore. I enjoy these stories because they help me reflect on my own story. I need help for the times when I struggle in our own world, the magic wand just out of my reach.

Despite my personal lack of fulfillment, the book is well written. The serpent Queen concept was super cool. I just hope with all the excitement of colliding worlds that future books don't look beyond the mark and lose their core merit in search of a greater "Cosmere.".

Cimree has always been a fascinating protagonist. In each book, she has been burdened by a curse that sets her apart, and she is always driven by fierce loyalty to those she protects. In Serpent Queen, she steps fully into her power, and watching her meet every test thrown at her - physically, emotionally, and morally - is deeply satisfying. By the end, the title the book gives her feels entirely earned.

Cimrees romance with Azra is at the heart of the story and is handled with Wheeler's usual care - never rushed, never overwrought, and rooted in genuine respect and shared danger. Fans who have been rooting for these two will not be disappointed.

The plot twists and turns expertly. A dangerous mission unravels in ways you won't see coming, trust is tested within Cimree's closest circle, and several supporting characters are given real room to shine. Even the Golum who is at the heart of the series gets an unexpectedly tender moment that is hard to stop thinking about.

For fans, like me, of the wider universe, this book is a real treat - easter eggs galore with connections to Mirrowen, Grave Kingdom, and beyond woven in with the kind of care that makes you want to reread everything from scratch. The ending closes Cimree's story really beautifully while leaving the wider world very much alive.

A worthy conclusion to a series that has grown with every volume. I have loved every second of this series!

A great conclusion to a great series, definitely worth reading! I had no idea what the ending to this series would be but it definitely didn’t disappoint.

One of the things I really enjoy about Jeff Wheeler’s books is that the ending is always unpredictable. His characters always succeed but he defines success in many different ways, it keeps his books exciting.

Jeff Wheeler is very good at subverting your expectations. He takes familiar stories and ideas and approaches them in a new way, I really enjoy how much it makes me question my assumptions. For example, I like many people think snakes are creepy but in this story they play such a vital role; they’re a natural and necessary part of the world.

This book gave me a lot to ponder about unchanging natures of people and creatures- how much can we change and does there come a point when it is too late? Is it an internal or an external deadline? Is a monster always a monster? I love books that make me think.

This book has a second point of view character, Azra. Normally I find it jarring when authors add in additional POVs part way through a series but I didn’t find that with this book, possibly because Azra is so familiar due to his strong bond with the main character, Cimree.

This book contains references to other series that the author has written. You don’t need to have read any of his other books to fully enjoy this book, but if you have then you will really enjoy understanding how all his worlds link together.

The Serpent Queen brings an excellent conclusion to the Angel Sworn series. Jeff continues to weave intrigue, suspense, hope, anguish, desire and curiosity further into his stories.

Plot lines continue weave throughout this book. There are many twists and role reversals for characters that are surprising. Jeff continues to drop breadcrumbs that link this world to other worlds of his creation. There are some direct links that have had my head spinning. I think this is one of the biggest draws I’ve had to Jeff’s writing. His series have always seemed connected and with each new book those connections become more solidified.

With the conclusion of the Angel Sworn series Jeff answers all (at least any I had) questions the plot lines have given the reader. There are a few things I ‘wished’ happened to some characters or resolutions for them but stories aren’t supposed to always work out perfectly.

This edition in the series explores some of the other main characters point of view closer. This strengthened the relationship between Azra and Cimree’s bond and did not feel forced.

I still have some questions after the ending. Will we see another story for what happens after the ending? I hope so. I have some guesses and would love to see if I’m anywhere close to what Jeff’s plans are.

A fairly fast paced read that leaves the reader wanting more. Job well done.

Overall, I found the book to be suspenseful and a fun read. The characters' story arcs were fun and allowed them to grow. We were shown some past events that helped us better understand the characters and understand their choices throughout the story. One critique, there were characters that acted in ways that I found unbelievable. For example, at one point a character is in a no win situation and has the power to flee, but doesn't. Not to save someone or something, but because they want to know more. It felt like they needed to be captured to move the story in a certain direction, rather than how a real person would respond.
The story was set up differently from the previous 3 in the series. The characters moved from one situation in which they were in danger to the next, without a lot of exposition. This made the book fun to read and I kept wondering how they would get out of the situation. There were so many that at times I worried less for the characters and just tried to figure out How they were going to get out of it, rather than IF they were going to get out of it.
There were some really fun conclusions to several threads that Jeff Wheeler created throughout the tetralogy. Jeff Wheeler tied most things up nicely, however I can see how he left some things open that he could add to the story latter.

I loved this book! There were so many twists and turns that I never quite knew what was coming next. This was an exciting and emotional finale filled with battles, betrayal, sacrifice, loyalty, and hope. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the story surprised me again!

Cimree's journey comes to a really satisfying conclusion. I loved seeing how much she has grown throughout the series and how everything she has been through has shaped her into the person she has become. The relationships were another highlight, especially the themes of redemption, love, and loyalty that run through the story. The magic system continues to be fascinating, and I enjoyed the deeper biblical themes woven throughout the book.

Fans of Muirwood will definitely appreciate the connections to the founding of Muirwood and the links to Whispers from Mirrowen. Those little details added a lot to the story and made the ending feel even more rewarding.

This was a great ending to the series. Everything came together well, and I finished the book feeling satisfied with where the characters ended up while still wishing there was more to read.

The Serpent Queen was a satisfying and hopeful end to the saga of Azra and Cimree. The two continue their quest to return Cimree to her fully human state, and to follow the clues and riddles posed to them by the Oldknow. You will cry, laugh, and hold your breath as you follow this last installment of the story of the Angel Sworn.

There are more epic battles. Enlightenment is obtained by showing kindness and mercy, but not shirking battle or punishment when warranted. People are tested and only those who are true to their values and their humanity are rewarded.

There are some biblical parallels drawn, as one might expect in this series, clues dropped, connections found to other of Wheeler’s series.

Serpent Queen shows us Cimree and Azra as they take the roles they were meant to have as protectors of those needing sanctuary, and is the origin story for several of the worlds with which Wheeler has already graced us.

I was delighted with this conclusion, and I’m looking forward to the stories that seem promised in the epilogue.

If you are a Wheeler fan, this book will delight you. If you have only just discovered him, you’ve been given clues for his worlds that you should explore next.

Well done, Jeff!!.

This final book was a lovely conclusion to the Angel Sworn series. The real strength of the book series is found in the heroism and positivity of Cimree's character. Jeff Wheeler's prose delivered a clean writing style that left me feeling uplifted as always. The Angel Sworn books are accessible to reader's of any age, and provide plenty of story-telling intrigue for readers looking to really sink their teeth into a rich story.

There were no loose ends in The Serpent Queen! Each character fulfilled their roles, goals, and did not feel forgotten. Plot lines tied up neatly and the book lined up a new series to look forward to.

Cimree was the driving the plot up to the end. I did feel that she became too passive with an ending becoming a bit Deus ex machina. However, the characters all had satisfying growth and development, and ultimately a good ending. Yet, I wish they were more active in how it all ended.

The blend of mythological themes between Christianity and classic Greek mythology is beautiful. The marriage of those two themes works incredibly well to deliver a unique world rich with lore. At times the parallels felt a little "copy/paste", but as the world continued to layer lore it fit well.

I would recommend this entire series! It ended well, and is an exciting expansion of the many worlds in Jeff Wheeler's books.

The Serpent Queen by Jeff Wheeler is the epic conclusion to the Angel Sworn series. The tale of Cimree and Azra has been a wonderful tale of drama, love, philosophy, and an intriguing new take on old legends. I really like learning more about our narrator. It certainly added another layer of interest to this story and I would actually like to learn more about the narrator, his past, and his future endeavors. I wish more had been done to resolve the situation with the golem. It seemed rather toned down in this book, as opposed to the mighty slayer of the angel sworn from earlier novels. I think the kids call it nerfed? Which I hate to say anything negative because I really loved the story! Perhaps a follow-up mini story where a small group of plucky Angel Sworn venture out and kill it? I really enjoyed seeing story aspects from other worlds colliding with the Angel Sworn. Jeff really has an entire multiverse of interconnected worlds to explore. Jeff's works are always clean, safe books for young adult readers. If your child isn't ready for Harry Potter, then they're not ready for Jeff's books. However, if they are ready for Harry Potter, then you can give them Jeff's books and know that they are clean. My teens have fought over Jeff's books since they were pre-teens and that didn't change with this book.

I've been reading Jeff Wheeler long enough that I should know better by now. Every new release, I tell myself, "Don't rush it. Enjoy it. Pace yourself." It's a lovely plan... right up until I read the first chapter.

Then it's all, "Just one more." Next thing I know, it's ridiculously late, the dog's wondering why I'm still awake, and I'm negotiating with myself about how much sleep a functioning adult actually needs. Turns out the answer is apparently "less than I thought."

What gets me every time is that Jeff still manages to fool me. I'll be sitting there thinking, "I've got this figured out." Five pages later I'm staring at the book thinking, "Well... that's awkward." I've accepted that I'm no longer trying to outsmart him. I'm just along for the ride.

I've read all of his series, so spotting the little connections is half the fun for me. Every now and then there's a tiny moment that makes me grin and think, "You sneaky bugger." They're never forced, just little rewards for those of us who've happily followed his worlds for years.

When I finished Serpent Queen, I did what every sensible person does. I closed the book, stared at the wall for a minute, and just sat there for a while. Not because the ending left me hanging. Quite the opposite. It wrapped up the series beautifully, and I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to these characters.

The characters are what keep me coming back to Jeff's books. They never feel like characters on a page. By the end, they feel like people you've spent time with.

Cimree is easily one of my favourites. She's strong without being invincible, and every choice she makes has weight. I spent most of the book hoping she'd finally catch a break, then remembered I was reading a Jeff Wheeler novel... so that clearly wasn't going to happen.

Azra steals every scene he's in. Just when I thought I'd worked him out, he'd do or say something that made me question everything again. He's the kind of character who keeps you guessing, and I loved that.

I also found myself really appreciating Odeon. He isn't the loudest character in the room, but his loyalty and quiet strength make him someone you can't help but root for.

The story itself is classic Jeff Wheeler. Great characters, plenty of political intrigue, twists that reminded me I'm nowhere near as clever as I think I am, and those little connections to his other series that always make me smile. As the final book, it delivers a satisfying ending while still leaving me wanting more, which is probably the best compliment I can give.

So thanks, Jeff. My sleep schedule is a mess, my "I'll only read one chapter" rule has once again been exposed as complete fiction, and now I'm left doing something I haven't had to do for this series before... say goodbye to it. That's a little bittersweet. But knowing your track record, I'm sure you'll have another world ready to steal my sleep before too long.

Cimree is dealing fairly well with her "Medusa" condition but it continues to cause heartbreak. Her memories are now resurfacing quickly and she finally finds out why she ate the fruit of the tree and came back as a baby with no memory of her previous life. Let us just say she is a better person now than she was before eating the fruit of the tree. She understands that there is an abomination from another world that is producing the monsters that are intent upon devouring her world and looks like it's up to her to stop them and break that otherworldly connection.

Tirich Mir is still their goal and they reach Koa, a settlement at the foot of the mountains, but have yet to ascend it.

The Angel Sworn are really the last hope to stop this invasion of abominations but there has been a schism in the Angel Sworn with half of them intent on killing her. Further there is a group of her Angel Sworn that have been captured and need rescuing from Koa. The rescue turns out to be walking into a trap and that causes a lot of problems.

More twists and turns some new characters and a page turner from the get go. If you have any of Jeff's previous Angel Sworn books, you will want to add this one to your collection. The quest continues...

This was the final book in the Angel Sworn series. I will admit that due to some things that affected the main character Cimree, some of the books previous to this were quite slow due to her being restricted.

This instalment was action packed, there was constantly something exciting happening that kept me turning page after page, and the conclusion hit so hard due to the struggles that Cimree had to go through to get there.

A new character was introduced in this one (Theo) that I took an instant like to and I really enjoyed chapters with him in. His love of knowledge really resonated with me as I was hovering up Wheeler lore along with him.

Towards the end of the book there was so much lore given that will delight long time readers of Wheeler's Worlds, I really recommend reading his other series' before this. I could say which one in particular but that would be a spoiler.

This one was one of my favourites due to the amount of tie ins it had to the other books and I had an awesome time with it.

It all comes together at last—so many threads tied together in this one!
Throughout the entire series, I've had fun making all these connections and figuring out how this story links up with Wheeler's previous worlds. And now I have all the answers . . . Sort of. There's just one of his series that ties in here that I haven't read yet.
But I will!
So what did I think?
I was a bit disconcerted by reading a scene that appeared set in the Biblical history of our own world, yet witnessing that moment from Azra's POV was oddly fascinating.
So many things I could say here, but I couldn't guaranty they'd all be spoiler free. As usual, I loved the prose, the depth of the characters, and the strange and wondrous complexity of the magical system. I must admit I struggled to connect with this story—the entire Angel Sworn series—more than other works of Wheeler. Though that's mostly a me thing. I'm just not so comfortable with someone rewriting the foundational parts of my faith in such a way.
But I really enjoyed the world, and the ending was just perfect.

What a great conclusion to this latest series from Jeff Wheeler

The pace definitely picks up in the final instalment and sadly this book, and the whole series, were over all too quickly.

The traitor is finally revealed and additional key characters introduced. Cimree and Azra’s story remains at the core, but there are lots of twists and turns to keep you reading, coming to a satisfying conclusion in the end connecting up all the loose ends.

As ever with his books Wheeler reveals additional detail as the story unfolds and suddenly previous parts of the story all fall into place (though not all as you might expect). No spoilers but this includes more clarity on the links to his other worlds – which certainly left me reflecting for a while after I’d finished. This arc may be over, but the wider story opportunities definitely continue.

This is a standalone series but the connections wouldn’t be obvious if you hadn’t read the ‘earlier’ series already – that said I’ll definitely be going back to have a re-read with some of this new context.

What an end to an amazing series! The character growth was incredible. I absolutely loved seeing the relationships shift and change so much in this conclusion. The peril increased, along with the pay off with each twist and turn. I don’t think there was anything Wheeler could have done that would have made me more satisfied with this ending!

What an incredible book full of connections to his other worlds as well! Finishing this series is renewing my motivation to finish out his collection of books and then start them all again in chronological order. I know there are so many things I will catch on a second read-through.

An aspect of this whole series that I also really enjoyed was all of the biblical references. It was a good mental exercise to consider which stories might be referenced throughout. And truly a unique retelling of creation that I’ve never seen before.

Completely recommend this gem of a series for anyone who loves deep world-building, interesting magic systems, beautiful (but not spicy) romance, and intense storytelling. It got better with each book!

Many thanks to the author and booksprout for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.

Serpent Queen is a must read for any Jeff Wheeler fan!
Cimree and Azra are back in this highly satisfying conclusion to Jeff Wheeler's Angel Sworn series.
What you need to know:
-Serpent Queen is not a stand alone book. I would definitely recommend that you read books 1-3 before reading Serpent Queen.
-The Angel Sworn series would not be a bad place for a new to Jeff Wheeler to start, but I'd recommend starting with Book 1, Queen Mother, so that you get the full impact.
- The magic system and portions of the world are going to feel familiar to long time readers.
-Similarly, Mr. Wheeler maintains consistency with his core values and the universe that he is building.
- Serpent Queen is true Jeff Wheeler style. It's clean, fast paced enjoyable reading.
-My favorite part:
Serpent Queen ties worlds, characters and stories together in this exciting conclusion in ways that I haven't quite seen Mr. Wheeler do before.
-I'm trying very hard not to give anything away, but you will smile a lot near the ending because of a particular character that you will meet.
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

I absolutely loved this series and the relationships between all the characters, either good or bad. I like the journey a few of them make as they fight against their own failings. Especially when we see their way of life crumble as they find out it was not based on what they had believed to be true.

As the last in the series everything was finished off nicely, also the introducing more people, so late in the series added another dimension to the storytelling. I read it so quickly that I wish it could have gone on, for longer.

I also enjoyed the ending and mention of other worlds that maybe connect with the authors other books, it would be great to have more crossover stories of characters or worlds, I can't wait to see what happens next.

As ever the book is well written, easy to read and flows nicely.

I am a big fan of Wheeler's work and I look forward to reading more of his work.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes adventure, great characters and lots of monsters. There is also a grumpy pale snake who I will miss immensely.

Full disclosure: I was given an ARC copy to read, but these positive views are my own and given freely and gladly

You've been there:

It's the last book of a series that you have been devouring the minute you get your hands on the next book.

And the next.

And then it hits you.

It's going to end.

You're torn between wanting to know what happens and wanting the story to last forever.

That was me when I started Serpent Queen. Mr. Wheeler crafts worlds so fantastical, yet so believable, that I felt like I was in the story. I can still picture scenery, conversations, and more, even though I finished the book a day before writing this. I'm sure it will be the same a week from now, and maybe I'll go back and visit.

This is the first series by Mr. Wheeler that I have read. And, lucky for me, he has many more books just waiting for me to jump into.

If you love fantasy. If you love a strong female main character. If you love stories that transcend time and space while also weaving in some of our own history, then grab this series, buckle in, and enjoy the ride!

The Serpent Queen is a satisfying conclusion to the four book Angel Sworn series. Once again, Jeff Wheeler’s characters are fully developed, surprising twists are revealed, and his trademark blending of his multi-verse of worlds gives us intriguing backstory to another well-beloved series.
The story follows Cimree and her companions as they face the continuing and increasing threat of monstrous creatures intent on destroying humanity, while revealing ancient artifacts, and heart-wrenching betrayals. Cimree’s personal journey of relationship building, while dealing with heart-rending personal suffering, is believable and compelling as she experiences sacrifice, hope and redemption.
As with Wheeler's other series, the story contains plenty of action, intrigue, and deep relationships while avoiding excessive violence and graphic content, making it appealing to readers who appreciate family-friendly fantasy. And while earlier installments contained plenty of snakes… this one has spiders! So many spiders…
