What Went Wrong In Ohio: The Conyers Report on the 2004 Presidential Election

Rate this book
This fascinating and disturbing book is the official record of testimony taken by the Democratic Members and Staff of the House Judiciary Committee, presided over by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the Ranking Member. Originally released in January, 2005 by the Committee and now available in print for the first time.

Witnesses included both Republicans and Democrats, elected officials, voting machine company employees, poll observers, and many voters who testified about the harassment they endured, some of which led to actual vote repression.

While shreds of the electoral chaos in Ohio were reported in the press, the issue soon faded from public view. What Went Wrong In Ohio provides new insights into the abuse and manipulation of electronic voting machines and the arbitrary and illegal behavior of a number of elected and election officials which effectively disenfranchised tens of thousands of voters in order to change the outcome of an election.

A frighteningly clear look at the theft of the 2004 presidential election. Rep. John Conyers (of the House Judiciary Committee) of Michigan provides a very readable and to the point look at exactly how the GOP stole the 2004 election. The book especially focuses on the ILLEGAL activities the Republicans took in order to disenfranchise minority voters, conduct fake recounts, exclude the media and literally use electronic voting machines to forge Republican votes.

It is clear from this report (this was an official congressional report) that what is left of our democracy is clearly doomed. For if the vote can be forged what hope do the people have of adequately being represented?

My only gripe with Conyers's report is that he fails to focus on the necessity of paper ballots. It is clear that electronic voting machines should be barred forver (especially ones created not by universities or government officials but by private industry).

It can only be hoped that one day these men (and women) who fixed the vote and brought our nation (and an unforgiving world) george w bush will be tried under the court of law and hung for treason

While the fiasco of the 2000 presidential election is widely known (see, for example, Jeffrey Toobin's "Too Close to Call"), much less is known about the 2004 presidential election. This report gives the facts that lead us also to question the outcome of the 2004 election. Unless the public understands what happened in Ohio in 2004 and demands change of election practices, it is likely that a future close election will also suffer from plagued results. Nothing currently appears that would prevent it from happening this year, 2012.

I thought I knew what went on in Ohio during the 2004 election, but I was wrong. The depth and breadth of the fraud is rather mind-boggling. Subtracting one star for Gore Vidal's intro.
