I picked this book up because a buddy from high school wrote it, but that in no way influenced my review.
Overall it was a good read. This is the first book of a planned series. This definitely gave me Tolkien vibes. In this book there is a lot of adventuring done by the characters. They seem to be on the go all the time, which is why it reminded me of Tolkien. The characters are likable. I would have like to see more character development, but with it just being the first book of a series I expect that will happen in future books. I felt that overall I got to see the personalities of them and this was enjoyable. Next the world. It seems like the world will be huge based on how much they traveled in this book. The world could have been described more to really give me the sense of it. This probably will happen through the series as the characters travel, but for an epic fantasy book I really like a deep world building so I feel like I can see the authors vision. There was decent action through the book. There were some battles (and I love battle scenes). I couldn’t help but compare these to Feist, which I consider to be one of the best battle scene writers for me. In this book I feel like there were a few scenes that could have been longer to really build up the suspense. It felt like some of them were rushed and over just when I was getting into it. Again this is just a personal preference because I like the suspense of good battles. Overall, for an intro into an epic fantasy world, it was good. I hope to continue the series when the next book is out!
