Ten years ago, after her parents were killed in a terrorist attack, Melanie Armstrong walked away from a military officer’s career to raise her orphaned brother.
Since then she's been captaining a tramp freighter – shuffling from world to world, scraping to barely get by, but content that she's made the right decision.
But when her ship crashes, authorities make her an take a fifteen-year sentence on a prison world where the average lifespan is a third of that.
Or take part in a mission to stop an ancient, and until-now forgotten, robotic warship, the Fenris, from completing its hundred-year-old task of destroying a planet, killing millions.
“Spriggs takes the reader through betrayal, loss, unexpected friends and even less expected forgiveness on a non-stop roller-coaster of action.” – Glynn Stewart, author of Starship’s Mage and City in the Sky.
“A well-drawn cast of very different characters on a difficult, unpredictable and fast-paced mission. Who the good and bad guys are, is not always obvious. Obvious is boring; Fenris Unchained is not.” – Mackey Chandler, author of Family Law and the April series.
Kal Spriggs started reading science fiction and fantasy in elementary school. Eventually he was the only eight year old with permission from the local public library to check out books from the adult section because he'd read everything else. He's written ever since he started running out of 'good' stuff to read when he was twelve, although he likes to think his writing has improved, if only slightly.
Spriggs is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy with an engineering degree. He followed in his parents' footsteps and joined the US Army after graduation and currently serves as an active duty Engineer captain. As well as earning a masters degree in environmental engineering, he's been deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Kal Spriggs tells a fun tale, albeit a bit predictable, about a robot warship on course to destroy a human starship and the small group of ex-prisoners set to reprogram it. Fenris Unchained (paper from Henchman Press) Melanie Armstrong is the merchant owner trying to make a living with her parents ship with the help of her brother with missed repairs cause it to crash. She and her brother are co-opted into the expedition. The Fenris’s mission was set a century before when the system it’s attacking was controlled by aliens. It’s been out of touch while repairing itself. The mission is complicated by pirates, including one in the Melainie’s group. This is light fun, and promises some sequels Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press
I really wanted to like this book as much as Kal's other stuff. I think I read on his website that it was one of his first books. I don't know. The story was good, the characters were great, and I loved the twists and turns. On the other hand, the editing wasn't nearly what I have come to expect and there was so much left unexplained.
I think the book needs a bit more editing and it would really shine.
