Gordo & the Gringo: A Tale of Mexico

Rate this book
Ignacio Antonio “Gordo” Hernandez-Macias is not quite twelve years old and lives with his Abuela Rita, actually his great grandmother, who is pushing hard at 100 years old and on top of that she is almost blind. Gordo’s parents had moved to Chicago shortly after his birth to look for work. Chicago is a large city in the United States. They left and have not bothered to come back, so he shares a little rundown house with his grandmother.
Gordo is very much overweight – thus the nickname “Gordo” meaning fat in Spanish. Being fat is not considered all that bad a thing in Mexico as it is in other parts of the world. It merely means that the person ate well. A sweet story with a setting in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Gordo is an enterprising lad and while his Abuela is off doing her job as a beggar for pesos on the cobblestone streets of their colonia, Gordo helps gringos around town with little chores and errands, mostly to support his growing food habit.
An authentic story of Mexico from a growing boy’s perspective

What happens to Gordo will warm your heart!
You may know me from reading my mystery/action adventure novels, so this story may seem to be a bit of a departure to you. I spend part of my year in San Miguel, one of the most beautiful towns in the world, and have personally observed my Ritas and my Gordos and can certainly relate to the Gringo in the story. My plan is to have this story, which is illustrated by Carlos of Spain, to be bilingual with English on one page followed by Spanish on the next, great for English as a second language teachers. Hope you like it.

No doubt about it, if I didn't read so much I'd probably write a hell of a lot more books. Don't even know how many books I've written - 4 B.B. Rivers mystery-action-adventure novels.

I was hoping for a trilogy but somehow ended up with 5, with one more on the way. This 6th one is to be titled "The Incredible Shrinking Ego - Murder on the Edge" and takes place not only in Austin, Texas (as usual) but also in the jungles of Guatemala.

I've got another series for all ages I call Family Fiction featuring Harley, a retired meter reader who can't stop walking and picks up litter around his town. He lives in the woods with his pet raccoon. There are three books in this series.

I once knew a kid called Gordo. He'd taken a Spanish class in high school and discovered gordo meant fat so he summarily adopted the nickname. It stuck. Even years later he is still known to one and all as Gordo. The Gordo of this story gets himself into a tight spot on account of his appetite. Little does he know that a local vendor who hires him to work his food cart is also a bit of a loan shark on the side. Sure enough, Gordo ends up owing the man a lot more than he ever makes, which of course the intrepid vendor counted on. But due to his intelligent nature and resilience, in the end Gordo manages to right the wrong he has done and earns a place in the readers' hearts forever. A great story, well told from the start, Gordo and the Gringo held my attention from beginning to end! Author Denniger Bolton has done it again! This is the 3rd book by Mr. Bolton that I've read and they are all superb. Highly

Gordo and the Gringo

Mistakenly thinking this was a children's book, I started it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Different and interesting...quick read. While I may not be reading it to my youngest grandkids, I think the middle-schoolers will like it. Bolton is a Good writer, and I am looking forward to reading some of his other works.

Gordo, like other Bolton characters, quickly becomes the kid you cheer for. He is caring, yet has a stinker streak, making him realistic. I look forward to reading more of his adventures. I think Gordo and his new friend, the gringo, will make an interesting pair.
