The Hand of Chaos is coming. In the spring following the events in Dark Practices the cult-nation is poised to launch its armies across Malker’s Wall and into the Realms, bringing a dark tide of destruction and death. Waiting for them are troops from every nation west of the wall, and every mercenary company in Alhenland, including the Phantom Badgers.
Hired as bodyguards and special-use troops the Badgers have front-row seats to the largest war in a century. Against a backdrop of war, death, and destruction the mercenaries do battle, raid, hunt spies, and as always plot and scheme to improve their lot while seeming to never fully steer clear of trouble.
Once again the men and women, Humans, Threll, and Dwarves of the diverse Company must make their way through a hard and unforgiving world. They take the reader for yet another trip down the Felher-haunted Imperial Highway, into Sagenhoft (the Star of the East), and across the Realms as they endure battle, skirmish, victory, and defeat.
Born and raised in the icy wastelands of North Dakota, RW Krpoun joined the US Army, serving two enlistments before being honorably discharged at Fort Hood, Texas. Delighted to discover a land where snow was a novelty, he settled in Texas and took up a career in law enforcement, serving thirty years before retiring. His service included a Sheriff's Office and two Municipal police agencies, as well as two enlistments in the Texas National Guard as a Criminal Investigator.
RW lives on lakeside acreage with his lovely and amazingly tolerant wife Ann, and a band of ill-mannered animals who are all highly photogenic. His hobbies include reading, history, various forms of shooting, collecting battle-ready examples of medieval weaponry, and learning to use such weapons.
Since around book two you can read the tea leaves and tell a Great War was on the horizon. Based on the companies small size (35 mercenaries at the time) I started wondering how the company would ramp up enough to make them effective in a pitched battle. Subsequent books provided the means for the personnel upgrade and the war (based on geopolitical reasons, not dark v light). In this book, I got my wish. The Company engaged in widespread warfare in a picture in picture view of the more widely fought war we were walked through. Well done overall.
A critique I have is - The war's conclusion. I wish some breaks would have gone another way and subsequently made a better ending/bridge to more books. But beggars can't be choosers.
Cover: 2/5 definitely an area that needs improvement.

To be honest, I initially thought that the Phantom Badgers set of books would be slow and boring but I was extremely surprised that it was not so. Right after I started reading book 1, I really got into the story. After that, I could not stop reading and managed to finish all five of the books in a couple of days. I can’t wait for book six. Highly recommended. 👍🏻👍🏻
