Simon Packham has written several highly acclaimed books for young people, including 'Silenced', which was shortlisted for multiple awards, 'comin 2 gt' u, a novel about cyberbullying and World War Two which is read widely in German schools, and 'Firewallers', chosen as one of The Independent’s children’s books of the year.

His first middle-grade novel, 'Has Anyone Seen Archie Ebbs?' (Firefly) was selected for the Empathy Lab’s 2023 Reading Collection and shortlisted for The Stockton Children’s Book of the Year and The James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award. Ich finde das Buch war sehr spannend. Ich habe es in zwei Tagen durchgelesen, weil es zwar dünn aber wirklich ein ernstes und interessantes Thema ist. Ich musste das Buch für die Schule lesen und würde es auch anderen Klassen weiterempfehlen. Durch dieses Buch wird man sich im Klaren, dass man nicht weil jemand anderes Aussehen hat, oder die Arbeit von jemanden einen anzipft, gleich anfangen muss zu mobben.

I picked this book because the cover intrigued me. And then the bullying aspect, I wondered how it would be handled.

I thought the build up and suspense was great, only execution of the ending was just… why? To me it didn’t make sense. It wasn’t the obvious suspects, nice touch, but also i don’t think the reasoning behind the culprits was enough. I mean, it’s bullying, you get bullied for wearing the wrong Nike’s at school so maybe I’m just expecting too much sense.

Unstable girl clearly going through some stuff, takes it upon herself to seriously hate her therapists son. But wait there’s more! Her mum also happens to be ‘in love’ with her victim’s best friend’s dad, and thus has also defected to the dark side and suddenly the best mate really, REALLY freaking hates poor Sam.
And it’s because Sam made jokes about his divorced parents and getting some cool stuff, sure it’s insensitive but they’re teens. Doesn’t warrant death threats and attempted murder-by-dirty-train-toilet-water. Or does it?

Ok, you know what, yeah maybe it is believable. Teens huh?

The grandad aspect was great, he was a character, and he and Sam had a great relationship. I was gutted he didn’t confide in him though to be honest, I was internally screaming for Sam to tell someone and get the bullying stopped. Sometimes it doesn’t happen for numerous reasons, I know, but asking for help isn’t weak!

The most heartbreaking part of this story was the beginning though. I felt Sam’s pain real deep when his online character was brutally murdered and he lost HOURS of gameplay and cool loot. Thanks for ruining the game, sods. This is why I avoid PvP.

I really enjoyed Comin 2 Gt U. The book is based around the main character, Sam, being bullied online by so-called classmates. The story is based around him trying to discover his mystery bully. It comes with a shock at the end and would definitely recommend.

Ich hätte mir mehr Details im Zusammenhang mit der Mutter gewünscht und die Auflösung hätte etwas mehr beschrieben werden können.
Trotzdem ist es traurig zu sehen, wie real die Geschichte ist oder es sein kann.

The story is very exciting and the ending is unexpected. I read it for school and thought it was the best book we had to read for German class.

Sam als Hauptfigur war in Ordnung, seine typische toxischer Teenagerjungen-Art nervte ein bisschen, ist für die Zielgruppe wahrscheinlich aber angemessen. Von der Story hatte ich etwas noch Ernsteres erwartet, doch es muss ja nicht immer alles extrem sein. Das Buch las sich durch die geringe Seitenanzahl ziemlich schnell und außerdem flüssig, besonders spannend fand ich es aber nicht. Immer wieder ging es um Sams Großvater, der für die Story eigentlich gar nicht relevant war. Viel schlimmer fand ich jedoch, dass im Buch eine vierunddreißigseitige Militärgeschichte dieses Großvaters auf mehrere Abschnitte aufgeteilt abgedruckt war. Sie stand zwar im Zusammenhang mit der Moral des Buches, doch hätte man die geschilderte Grundsituation auch definitiv kürzer einbauen können. (SPOILER) Im Buch wird auch erwähnt, dass Steve (oder Dumbo) eine sehr ähnliche Erfahrung wie Sam durchgemacht hat, weswegen ich mir gewünscht hätte, dass er am Ende ebenfalls Gerechtigkeit erfährt. Und Sam wäre ihm definitiv eine Entschuldigung schuldig. Dass Abby und Alex die Bösen sind, hat mich wirklich überrascht, weil ich vor allem sie sehr gemocht hatte. (SPOILER ENDE) Das Finale fand ich übrigens nicht besonders überragend. Noch eine kleine Anmerkung: Auf Seite achtundneunzig steht „ich hatten Angst“, auf Seite hundertvierundzwanzig steht „spättisch“ und auf Seite hundertsechsundachtzig fehlen die Anführungszeichen am Ende von Abbys wörtlicher Rede.
