DNF 60%, no real reason, just not connecting personally to this. Nothing against it, just not in the mood for this and not connecting to the characters. Love all the other Karen books I have read though. May revisit someday.

There is so much to love in this retelling of The Little Mermaid, including the way the author crafted the villainess, Mrs. Underhill. She created a character who wielded her control and used her cunning wits to manage everyone around her.

Muriel ended up caught in a web of lies due to her association with Mrs. Underhill and I was concerned, at first, about the lies she was wrapped up in. However, the author managed this beautifully and strengthened Muriel’s character, having her “come clean” to the hero in a timely manner.

It was a bit of a slow start for me, however, eventually I was rapidly turning pages to see what was going to happen. This was lots of fun to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of The Little Mermaid with a western historical spin to it. It is set in Corpus Christi, Texas. This book has all the things a fairy tale lover enjoys with a sweet and intelligent heroine, and heroic hero who saves the day from the mean villain. Plus, a wonderful inspirational message. It is a sweet western romance that will leave the reader with a happy sigh with the happily ever after.

I absolutely loved this story! Part of Your World is a Galveston, TX western spin on The Little Mermaid, and I loved all the nods to the story AND the differences, as well as Witemeyer’s creativity. The growth in Muriel throughout this story is so rewarding. The trials that stem from her trusting the wrong person mature her and grow her faith. I absolutely loved that Muriel and Zane team up in this story. I love stories where the main couple have to join forces against a foe instead of have conflict with each other, and that’s what we get here. Zane is a terrific hero! He and his grandpa made me smile so much. There’s some lovely suspense at the climax! I truly enjoyed the themes of God’s will being better than our plans, having hymns/songs speak truth to our hearts, and that this was such a sweet love story with great yearning!

I always recommend Karen Witemeyer and her fairy tale retellings are just wonderful. I’d been looking forward to this story for so long, and it didn’t disappoint.

What an incredibly fun story! The author took all of the elements from The Little Mermaid and incorporated it into a historical romance. The red hair, loving to swim, rescuing the wealthy son of a prominent family, not being able to talk to the man as part of her bargain with the villain, etc. It's all there and incorporated wonderfully into the story.

Muriel neglects some of what her family expects from her because she spends so much time swimming or with a friend. Her intentions are always pure, but the consequences with her family leave her with choices to make. That's where Octavia Underhill comes into play. She's manipulative and convinces Muriel that she can help her win over Zane and get into his family's good graces if Muriel does something for her!

I appreciated that Muriel didn't want to outright lie to Zane, but with Octavia's influence, she believes she's doing Zane a favor by not telling him everything. I enjoyed watching their relationship blossom over the time they have together. How discerning he is as he gets to know Muriel. Going into a relationship without giving all of the truth is a recipe for disaster. I honestly liked how the author handled all of that part of the story! No spoilers of course!

As for Octavia, is it concerning that I have a smidge of a sad spot for her? At least, until we get to the end when she's rather despicable. The people who go into a partnership with her know what they're getting into. That is, aside from Muriel, who is still young and not worldly.

It was kind of funny because continuously I had to remind myself that the story was set in Galveston, TX in the late 1880s. Because Muriel is Irish, I kept imaging them in historical UK. lol I mean, there were some similarities, especially with them being on the water. But mentions of "soda shops" and similar phrases would remind me where the story was actually happening!

As always, I appreciated the faith story thread that the author wove into the story!

Karen Witemeyer’s Part of Your World is the sweetest retelling of The Little Mermaid fairy tale. While the reader will recognize the original fairy tale in many places, Witemeyer’s story is fresh, fun, and romantic. I thoroughly enjoyed Muriel, the unique heroine who loves to swim. She is somewhat impulsive, but so loving and caring. Zane is the perfect hero for her, handsome and loyal. The Texas setting of this fairy tale is a special twist that makes the story different from others. I was definitely invested in this story from the first page to the last and even enjoyed the historical notes at the end.

This series is so fun! I love the connections to the Disney movies and all the added adventure and suspense! I adored how the author infused God in this story. It was so refreshing to read about characters, who in deep trouble, rely on God and his power to help and guide.
Zane is definitely one of the best male main characters I've read in a while. He is Godly, kind, doesn't care what others think, and has so many other positives. I also love Muriel, the female main character, for her boldness, love for her family, and unashamed attitude.

Oh, how I love fairytale retellings.
Especially when they’re set in Texas.

And yes, this one was as cheesy and Disney-reference filled as its predecessor, but I still loved it. I can’t wait to see which fairytale Karen Witemeyer gives a Texas-spin next!

Fans of The Little Mermaid, check this out! Beloved author Karen Witemeyer has taken this classic tale and set it in Galveston in the 1800s. Ariel has become Muriel, a young woman who loves the sea and is an avid swimmer. When she rescues a wealthy and privileged young man after a sailing accident, she loses her heart to him and strikes a bargain with a nefarious woman to try to find Zane again.

Witemeyer incorporates so many parts of the original tale in creative ways. I have to say, the Ursula character was my favorite -- and I don't like the original Ursula! But Octavia Underhill is just so deliciously bad that I couldn't help but like her.

While this story is a fairy tale retelling, it also has plenty of faith content. Hymns play a big part and the characters pray and go to church. While I'm not the biggest fan of the insta-love trope, I did enjoy this story a lot and would recommend it to all fans of fairy tale retellings, and especially for fans of The Little Mermaid. Don't skip the author's note at the end to find out all the cool links that real historical Galveston had to the story!

In this artistically brilliant retelling of The Little Mermaid, this beloved story is interwoven with a real-life setting on the shores of 1880s Galveston, Texas. Subtle hints to the animated movie we know and love are a treat, and the plot is both cleverly similar yet uniquely retold. Muriel’s faith and relationship with Jesus is inspiring and turns the typical criticism of an immature Little Mermaid with no consideration to the consequences of her actions on its head! The faith thread in the fairytale retelling adds depth to both the characters and the plot, and reminds us of Christ’s redemption and abiding love even when we mess up. Plus, the love story is absolutely delightful too! Zane is wonderful and definitely a hero that is worthy of a Prince Eric comparison— this coming from a girl whose first “crush” was the handsome, heroic, and caring animated prince! This book will delight everyone, but those of us who grew up belting Part of Your World and playing Little Mermaid in the pool? This one is for us! Another five star read from Karen Witemeyer— but do you really expect anything less than a phenomenal story from her? I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

I loved it!!
This beautiful western retelling of The Little Mermaid made a big splash in my heart. I was enraptured with this sweet love story and especially with the suspenseful elements. I absolutely devoured the last 6 chapters or so...it was too good to put down!
Zane and Muriel were so adorable together. I adored Muriel and her unbridled everything. She was so full of life and I love that so much. Zane was such a sweetheart and so chivalrous.
This book had so many elements of The Little Mermaid in it, while also maintaining its own creativity and charm.
And can I just say that I love that Muriel told Zane the truth right away?? Poor communication between the main characters is such a common trope in romance and I LOVE that Zane and Muriel were honest with each other and communicated openly.
Another wonderful book from the talented Karen Witemeyer! Highly recommend.

The author captured the vibes of the little mermaid perfectly. The wholesome love between Muriel and Zane was beautiful. I loved the goodness shown from both those characters and how Christlike they are in their forgiveness and actions. They both have genuinely good souls and are a great team. They work together to solve the problems in the story. I loved Ariel’s relationship with her father and her nephew Fletcher. Her father brought the best out of Muriel and Fletcher reminded me of my son. I love the Irish accents and everything to do with the sea. It was a fun setting. The Ursula in the story was so well written. She was a great villain!! I love how clean and wholesome the authors books always are. She includes some meaningful Christian messages. 4.5 stars

Mutual Quinn is Irish and has an Irish brogue . She has red hair and loves to swim in the gulf (sea). Her da works on the docks. She is the youngest and last of the four daughters to be married. So she is in charge of house hold. But dinner is normally a little late and linens not perfectly pressed. “ Honor and responsibility go hand in hand, me girl. Respect yer obligations. Show that ye can be counted upon. 'Tis how trust is built and maturity is gained. The Lord himself said that the one who is faithful with small things will also be faithful with much. Ye dream of a big life, Muriel, but ye must prove that ye can be a good steward of the humble life ye live now before ye can be trusted with more.” Her father let her wear a boys bathing costume if she promised to only let family see her in it. (Short sleeves and shorts) Fletcher (her 10yo nephew) is like flounder. Muriel and Fletcher beach comb and find odds and ends to collect. One was a chatelaine clip ("Sha-till-ane?") "A lady uses it to keep necessary items near at hand. This flat part is tucked inside the lady's waistband and then delicate chains are attached at the edge of the ornamental piece here. A lady might carry a miniature notebook, a watch, or a vial of smelling salts. Mrs. Trimble wore a sewing chatelaine with a needle case, thimble, and a pair of miniature scissors. Housekeepers use them to carry their keys.” Laraline is an old lady that used to cook for the rich. Friend of theirs. The villain aka the matchmaker aka Octavia underhill aka the blackmailer aka owner of two ferrets. Muriel sings in the church choir and has a beautiful voice. Zane on his sail boat hears her singing!! They made a connection then he gets hit in the head and falls in the water and she dives in to rescue him! He vows to find the red headed woman with a beautiful voice that saved him. And she cant stop thinking and praying for him. They are both looking for each other bc they have a connection!! I am dying!! I love Muriel’s dad and the love and protectiveness he shows. She can’t speak in front of zane bc of her Irish lilt of an accent: ““but that Irish lilt Mrs. Underhill so despised was the song of her family. Her da, her sisters, they all spoke as she did. It was a cadence filled with love, with joy, with teasing, and with pride.” Awww!!! When they first see each other she smiles and he says: “I’ve found you.” Eek! Muriel holds nothing back.. “An enthusiasm she might be laying on a bit thick. Octavia fought to keep her eyes from rolling as her charge thrust a hand through the lowered window on the far side of the carriage and waved at Mr. Erickson with all the subtlety of a foghorn. The girl knew nothing of the delicate cat-and-mouse machinations required to lure men. She lacked sophistication, wore her every emotion on her sleeve, and couldn't even flirt properly.” On their first date he taught her how to play his recorder. Bc he knew she has the heart for music and would be missing it. He loves her enthusiasm for everything. “Such expressive eyes. Changing like the sea. Adventurous. Playful. Shy. Bold. Secretive.” I absolutely love this advice!!! “"Just because a woman is perfect for you, don't mean she's perfect. Best not expect her to be." I love that she tells the truth! And he loves this common Irish girl! they are both so graceful and forgiving. His father is cutting him off so he will live more modestly off his own salary. “"So, if you were hoping to be part of this world, you might need to brace yourself for disappointment." "Zane." She leaned toward him, her eyes round and glimmering with sincerity. "I don't want to be part of this world." She, too, gestured to the well-appointed room. "I want to be part of yer world. Wherever ye are, that's where I want to be. Whether that be here among yer father's people, in a small house off Avenue M, or even in a different city altogether. I just want to be with ye." Zane is literally a Disney prince. And she a princess. They capture Ariel and prince Eric vibes perfectly. Zane and gpa Clen meeting Muriel’s family is the best!!! She can offer Zane a family full of time spent together and love. Octavia underhill has Fletcher captured on a boat! Muriel will swim to rescue him though. And Liam (fletchers father) and Muriel’s father are rowing out to assist them while Zane deals with Mrs underhill. Zane and Muriel reunion and their kiss!! It’s his first kiss!!! The marriage proposal! The mother and son reunion!

I just adored this historical retelling of The Little Mermaid by Karen Witemeyer. Part of Your World is part of the series, Once Upon a Time in Texas. It stands by itself. I loved the story because the parallels are easy to see, yet this new story certainly is unique. I loved that the story took place in the past and Muriel has a real- life example she wants to emulate.

I also loved the villian, Octavia. Did I like her? No! But she is very intelligent and conniving. If anyone could win this battle, Octavia has all the tools. What I liked most about her and the book, was that the story is told without magic. I loved how Witemeyer makes this omission work!

Of course, I loved Zane and Muriel. They seem so fitted. But I also loved Grandpa Clem’s warning to Zane, "Just because a woman is perfect for you, don't mean she's perfect. Best not expect her to be."

It’s funny how in life, God provides encouragement through various sources, some unexpected. Sister Mary Vincent plays a small role, but her insights are great! “When the Israelites were trapped between the Egyptian army and an impassable sea, there seemed to be no way out . . . until God opened a path. He can do the same for you, if you have the courage to follow where he leads.”

My fave secondary character is Grandpa Clem. Because doesn't everyone want at least one person like that in their corner?

Read this one back in May, but it was released yesterday! This is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, the second book in this series and Witemeyer’s fourth fairytale retelling total. Now I’m not usually a fan of fairytale retellings, but I have very much enjoyed Witemeyer’s contributions (particularly her “To Love a Beast” and “Cloaked in Beauty”). “Part of Your World” was a quick read, and while I’m not actually a fan of The Little Mermaid (I know, I’m sorry! 🙃), I still found this version enjoyable to read, which is a feat only Karen Witemeyer could achieve 😉.

Muriel Quinn feels far more at home swimming in her beloved ocean, gliding through the waves and dreaming of a life free of societal constraints. Her father, a hardworking Irishman, wants her to set aside her free spirited ways and conduct herself like a proper, dutiful young woman. But try as she might, Muriel has difficulty conforming. Zane Erickson comes from a wealthy, societal family with big expectations for him to go into the family business, despite this he chooses to pursue his passion for architecture. When the ocean brings Muriel and Zane together through a daring rescue, it’s love at first sight for both….. but Zane doesn’t know who his mermaid rescuer is, not even her name. Will they be able to navigate the differences in their station in life as well as the forces conspiring to keep them apart?

As I said before, I enjoyed reading “Part of Your World”. I appreciated the theme of redemption in the story, found the characters well rounded, and enjoyed the little Easter eggs planted throughout the story nodding to the Disney movie. I wish there was more resolution to both Vanessa and Octavia’s storylines, but the book was overall a quick, delightful read.

Karen Witemeyer has done a great job with the retelling of The Little Mermaid. I enjoyed the way she spun all the characters into a Texas coastal town, complete with a singing girl of the sea, a rich boat-loving guy, a scheming matchmaker, 2 ferrets, and a protective father. Her retellings always make me smile as I turn the page to see how she has recreated each facet of the original storyline.

Karen Witemeyer has done it again! Part of Your World is a charming and heartfelt retelling of The Little Mermaid that completely captured my heart from beginning to end.
Muriel Quinn is such a delightful heroine. She is a straightforward, genuine, loving, selfless, courageous, feisty and full of joy heroine. Her passion for the sea and her zest for life are contagious, and I loved her Irish lilt and expressions, as well as those of her family. Muriel always strives to see the good in people and the bright side of every situation. While her trusting nature leaves her vulnerable to manipulation, she is also humble enough to recognize her mistakes and courageous enough to face the consequences. Her spiritual journey was one of my favorite aspects of the story. I loved the natural way she spoke to the Lord and how she learned to rely not on her own strength, but on His. One quote that especially resonated with me was: “I’ve felt ye with me Lord… Be with me now. Give me strength, a calm spirit, and clarity of mind. I can’t do this without ye.”
Zane Erickson was equally wonderful. His kind heart, integrity, devotion to Muriel, and passion for architecture made him a hero so easy to love—this last trait perhaps even more so for me because I am an architect myself and could relate to that aspect of his character. What touched me most was how deeply he valued Muriel not only for her beauty, but for her pure heart, her joy, her love for her family, and the warmth she brought into his life. I especially appreciated the way he stood up for her, even when it meant opposing the expectations of his own family. His relationship with his father was heartbreaking at times, and yet the story also offered opportunities for growth, forgiveness, and redemption.
The romance was absolutely sweet and endearing. Though it begins with an instant attraction, it develops into something deeper as both Muriel and Zane actively seek each other despite the obstacles in their path. Even when deception and danger threaten to pull them apart, their love only grows stronger.
The faith message was beautifully woven throughout the story. The novel highlights the importance of truthfulness, integrity, and trusting God rather than relying solely on ourselves. It reminds readers that wealth, social standing, and outward appearances are fleeting, while love, kindness, forgiveness, and a heart devoted to God are what truly matter. I loved how naturally the characters turned to the Lord in prayer, seeking His guidance, praising Him, and giving Him glory.
The Galveston setting came alive through the author’s vivid descriptions, and I was especially impressed by how authentically she captured the Irish brogue. I could practically hear the accents as I read. Another thing that made it even more interesting for me is the pieces of real historical details woven into the story, that the author highlights in her note at the end.
Although this is a retelling and some elements may feel familiar, the author brings enough originality, charm, and unexpected twists to make the story feel fresh and unique. The Little Mermaid inspiration is clear, yet the novel fully stands on its own.
The secondary characters were just as memorable. Patrick Quinn (“Da”) embodies protective fatherly love while still respecting his daughter’s choices, and Fletcher added an extra layer of sweetness and charm to every scene he appeared in.
This was one of those books that made it difficult to put down to sleep or tend to everyday responsibilities. It offers the perfect escape, with smiles and swoons, while also providing meaningful spiritual lessons through characters who stay with you long after the final page.
Even if it’s the second book of the Once Upon a Time in Texas series, this story is a complete standalone and is not related with the first book, which is also amazing, by the way!
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy fairy-tale retellings, historical romance, strong faith elements, and heartwarming love stories!

Karen Witemeyer + Fairy Tale Retellings = Amazing Storytelling You Didn't Know You Needed!

Karen Witemeyer's newest book in her Once Upon a Time in Texas series, Part of Your World...a Little Mermaid retelling...is fantastic!

I have loved all of Karen Witemeyer’s books and would have a really hard time choosing a favorite. But…there is just something extra special about her fairy tale retellings. Ms. Witemeyer writes Christian historical romance set in the late 1800s. Her characters range from ranchers to lawmen, bakers to telephone operators, architects to book binders. If you are new to her books, Part of Your World is a great place to start!

Although I have read and enjoyed many fairy tale retellings over the years, I have never read one based on The Little Mermaid before. As The Little Mermaid is set in the ocean, I was intrigued to learn how some of the major elements of this fairy tale would play out in late 1800s Texas. In the animated Disney version, Ariel’s companions were a fish and a bird…who would they be on land? How would Ariel and Eric reconnect after she saves him? How would Ursula’s taking of Ariel’s voice be reimagined? As expected, I was not disappointed. It was a joy to discover the answer to those questions and many more. God has definitely gifted Ms. Witemeyer with a beautifully creative and imaginative mind.

Zane and Muriel, in Part of Your World, follow along the storyline of The Little Mermaid by becoming enamored with one another from the start...and then having to find their way through a series of hurdles to be together, including getting out of a binding agreement with Octavia Underhill. Although you know the basic roadmap of the story since it’s based on a fairy tale, Ms. Witemeyer weaves a tale that keeps you anticipating the journey!

One of my favorite parts of all Karen Witemeyer books is the way she weaves faith throughout the story. In this story, Zane and Muriel both grapple with the commandment to “Honor your father and mother as the LORD has commanded you…” (Deuteronomy 5:16) while pursuing the passions God gifted each of them with. We are also reminded of God’s unconditional love and the importance of family.

I love that Ms. Witemeyer’s Texas Ever After and Once Upon a Time in Texas series both pay homage to the fairy tales we love through realistic stories that keep the integrity of the times without sacrificing the sense of wonderment.

In case you are a stickler for reading books in order like I am, I will tell you that there is zero connection between any of the books in either her Texas Ever After or her Once Upon a Time in Texas series. They are all truly stand-alone books. I highly recommend that you read ALL of them! They are sooo good! Whether you’ve read the others yet or not, now is the perfect time to order and read Part of Your World!!

Ahh, all the love for this creative Little Mermaid retelling! I’ve enjoyed every one of Karen Witemeyer’s clever fairytale retellings with a historical Western twist. All the charming elements of the familiar story are here with a unique spin, & I loved spotting the imaginative homages throughout. If you fell in love with Disney’s musical version of the classic tale, you’ll love this one too!

Set in 1886 Galveston, Texas, Muriel Quinn’s an Irish dockworker’s daughter who’s more at home in the water than on land. Her love of the sea often collides wither her responsibilities & when she’s late to a church choir practice, her father bans her from swimming until she can manage her time more wisely. But, when she rescues a handsome man after a boating accident, their connection is instant & she suddenly longs for more than the sea. With social class standing in their way, she seeks out a famed matchmaker & strikes a bargain to be formally introduced to the man she saved. When that bargain turns to blackmail, Muriel finds herself in a terrible predicament that could ruin any chance she has with Zane.

Despite being a wealthy man’s son & part of Galveston’s high society, Zane Erickson’s pursuing a career in architecture. Unimpressed by the women his mother parades before him, he finds himself captivated by the unknown, ethereal beauty who saved his life & whose voice haunts his dreams. When she suddenly appears as the matchmaker’s choice for him, he’s overjoyed. But the path to true love is fraught with danger that could ruin both their families unless they can outsmart the clever matchmaker.

I adored this story! I loved the way the author took a well-known tale & made it feel fresh while still honoring the classic. Loved the way Ursula is turned into Octavia Underhill, a conniving matchmaker & blackmailer who’s every bit as underhanded as the sea witch. The pet eels become sneaky ferrets, & Flounder & Scuttle are reimagined as Muriel’s nephew & a darling older lady whose names for things are just as funny as her predecessor’s. I loved how class differences & heritage replace the mermaid/human conflict, & how the contract became a secret-filled journal.

The chemistry between Muriel & Zane was off the charts. I enjoyed watching their love at first sight romance become an enduring love. Loved themes of family & faith woven in as well.

Highly recommend to historical romance & fairytale fans! I received an advanced copy but also purchased in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

This book certainly makes a splash!! I was so excited to see how Karen Witemeyer would make a “believable” story out of the Little Mermaid premise and I was beyond satisfied!
The meeting of our two main characters was absolutely perfect. I don’t want to give anything away but think connecting gazes and hope-filled longing!
The characters of Muriel and Zane are artfully written, staying true to the characters in the original story of the Little Mermaid but so much deeper and more relatable.
Zane Erickson is a swoon worthy hero who stands up for what’s right, even if it hurts, and he has such a pure love for the woman who has captured his heart, it’s enough to make you clasp the book to your chest and breathe a dreamy sigh.
Muriel is a free-spirited woman whose love of dreams sometimes gets her into trouble but her growth throughout the book is beautiful to see. Her love for Zane is precious and the description about her heart “recognizing” him made me teary-eyed!
The author’s descriptions about the sea and Muriel’s love for it were so good that I felt I was standing with the characters on the seashore.

There’s so much more to say about the wicked villainess and her unique pets; Zane’s precious Grandfather; his best friend, Max; Muriel’s very own buddy who follows her around like Flounder did Ariel; and her amazing swimming ability, but then I’ll have written a novel! My best advice would be to get the actual novel and bask in the sunshine of true love while diving into pure fun and daring intrigue!
I love all of Karen Witemeyer’s books but I must say this is one of my very favorites. There were so many nods to the sweet original story but, at the same time, it was a thought-provoking tale about our need to be dependent upon Christ and not lean on our own understanding.

Muriel Quinn loves her family, loves swimming, and loves the world of the rich and fancy. However, Muriel is neither rich nor fancy and her family would like her to get her head out of the clouds and her body out of the water and focus on the responsibilities of life. After a series of incidents where she doesn’t show up, including a choir practice in which she is the soloist, her father forbids her from any more swimming until she can apply more self-discipline and restraint.

When Zane Erickson – who IS rich and fancy! – is on the water with his new boat, he hears Muriel singing while standing on a rock by the sea. He finds himself so mesmerized by Muriel’s beautiful voice and red hair that he becomes distracted, gets hit with the boom of his boat, and falls overboard. Muriel sees him going under and must spring into action to rescue him from the water.

All of this happens in the first few chapters! You will enjoy the other characters that Karen Witemeyer creates as she re-tells the Little Mermaid story in 1886 Galveston, Texas. All of Witemeyer’s books are humorous with spunky heroines and swoon-worthy heroes. Her Fairy Tale adaptations are especially enjoyable with her creative spin on well-known stories. This is a perfect summer read that will leave you feeling happy and, yet, wanting more.

This is the 5th Westernized version of a fairy tale Witemeyer has written. She did three in the Texas Ever After Series for Bethany House Publishers, and this is the second in her Once Upon a Time In Texas Series for Hope and Light Publishing.

I have enjoyed every book. Witemeyer excels at turning fairy tales into more modern Westernized stories without overdoing the similarities.

Part of Your World is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, a story I am completely unfamiliar with. I did read a plot summary after reading this book, and can see similarities from that...such as Muriel rescuing Zane from drowning in the sea.

As with all of her books, Witemeyer created some great likable characters - and of course a couple not so likable ones. Zane made a great hero of the story, and Muriel a great heroine. Then there is Fletcher, the 10 year old nephew of Muriel, Zane's Grandpa Clem, and others, who all add to a great story in their own way.

There is a villain of course - an evil female character. There is an element of suspense in the story, with a 10 year old boy in danger and shenanigans on the beach at one point. And this is a romance, so there is that, which was well done. Witemeyer came up with a great plot that kept me reading til the great ending. I truly loved and enjoyed this book, and was happy to see Zane and Muriel get their happy ending.

The book does have some true history in it, which the author references at the end of the book that I found interesting.

The author again has shown she can write a great historical novel that is worth reading.

Karen Withemeyer delivers another outstanding story in her Little Mermaid retelling set against the backdrop of 1880's Galveston. I was sincerely wondering how she would mold this story into one of her trademark westerns, that are filled with danger, romantic tension, family and faith.

Like the skillful artisan she is, she skillfully penned a brilliant story that captures the imagination, without forcing the plot to fit the original fairy tale. It seems to flow naturally into this new setting. The characteristics of the main characters mirror those in the original story, but in a realistic way. No tail turned into feet, or talking crustaceans. I loved the brilliant and eclectic cast of characters, from the evil Octavia to Grandpa Clem, from the strong-spirited Muriel to the heroic Zane. Muriel is just as headstrong as Ariel is on the original story. I love the way she matured through the story.

And their love story....happy sigh. Being familiar with the story, I anticipated some of the plot lines, but I loved reading the original twists that Ms. Witemeyer gave the story. And the hymns that are woven throughout speak their own message of reliance on God for strength and wisdom.

Muriel Quinn and Zane Erickson's story was such a wonderful retelling of 'The Little Mermaid'. I so thoroughly enjoyed it that I finished it in one sitting. The book design by "Carpe Librum Book Design" is lovely, and I adore the play on words. Set in Galveston, TX 1886, we are treated to a delightful tale of a woman whose head is often in the sea rather than firmly planted on the ground and responsibility. She lives with her wonderfully Irish father, Patrick, and is the last daughter left at home. Additionally, Zane is from a wealthy family whose heart desires a love match directed by God and a career in Architecture. His controlling parents are set to push him towards a marriage that will meet their ideals and enlist the help of a matchmaker. I love that St. Ursula's by the Sea run by Octavia Underhill 🦑 was a real place (based on the Ursuline Academy for young ladies or St. Ursula's in 1847).
This book doesn't drag you into the Disney version of the story, but rather whispers to your heart of the fanciful nature of it, yet gives a delightfully grown-up take with nods to the old and a tale you will want to revisit.

This book has a special heart of its own. A sweet story that has a lesson all of its own. One that I liked very much.
I finished this book late into the evening.
Muriel and Zane were fun characters that I enjoyed and loved.
I.did not like Octavia. She was selfish and mean.
Witemeyer is an excellent storyteller
I like the setting of Galveston. The description made me feel like I was there with my two favorite people.
Muriel is my favorite character of course. In some ways she reminds me of me lol. Headstrong and not listening to people that want the best for her. My heart started pounding when I saw what Octavia had in store for her. I felt bad for the girl
I thought Zane was sweet. I liked how he treated people that were below him.
I want to share a quote
"Just because a woman is perfect for you, don't mean she's perfect." " Best not expect her to be".
Not any one of us is perfect. I loved Grandpa Clems reminder to Zane of that.

This author never disappoints! I have spent time on Galveston Island myself and I was so looking forward to see how she wrote this delightful rendition of the Little Mermaid on the island. I didn't know much about the history of the island but now, after reading the book, the author did a fabulous researching job of blending the fact and fiction.
I fell in love with Zane right away. Even though he came from the "upper crust" of society, he wasn't impressed with society females that were thrown his way by matchmaking mamas! He wanted someone to share his life and love with. He'd already bucked the trend by not following in his father's footsteps and going into architecture rather than the cotton industry like his father. I also loved his Grandpa Clem. What a downhome, fun man he was! Always steering Zane in the right direction!
Muriel was also a delight. She followed her own path and tried so hard to do what was right, but it got her trouble! She wanted Zane and didn't think through the consequences when she agreed to be the pawn in the "evil" matchmaker's scheme.
How will this couple ever get through the blackmail scheme and come out the other side? Will true love win? Will their families be safe from their foolish decisions? A wonderful story and great characters!

I was wondering how Karen Witemeyer was going to craft a believable novel based on The Little Mermaid, and I was positively delighted in the result! I loved all the little nods to the cartoon, they were so creative! I simply adored Muriel from page one. Her passion for the sea, for her family, and for life were so evident. Zane is also a favorite. He has such a kind and generous heart and he was brave in the midst of adversity. They were the perfect match. The deceptions of the matchmaker made the story take some unexpected twists that easily kept my attention. And I loved the descriptions of the setting in the novel; I could basically taste the salty air, feel the warm sun, and see the crashing waves! The integration of spiritual themes of trusting God were expertly woven and well-integrated. I really loved this story and did not want it to end. Highly recommended to those who enjoy historical fiction with a splash (haha see what I did there) of romance!
