One of the first books we read for my church young adult book club. It's basically a brief overview of Love and Responsibility by JP2. His book is notoriously difficulty to read, so this book is a known easy guide to understand what he is saying. We didn't actually discuss the book much, but just talked about regular dating hot topic questions (spurned on by me!). I didn't find this book that insight. 80% of the book was not groundbreaking or that interesting or revealing. It was pretty common stuff about modest, why chasity was important, etc. The book explains the philosophically reasons behind these things and why its the catholic truth. But I didn't find it too interesting or memorable.

I did love the last two chapters of the books. Why is advice for singles and married couples. The advice for singles is that this period of your life is your marriage prep. I didn't think about it like that, but that makes sense. You have to use this time to learn to be a better person. The habits you have now will follow you into marriage. So being a better person now will help you be a better person in marriage. And in marriage, it's all about serving your partner. So learning how to serve others while single will real help in your marriage. I do volunteering, and now I know I got to do even more volunteering, so I can better prepare for marriage.

Also, a big take away from this book is how in marriage, it is about serving each other and that is the vow you make. In religious life, if your a Priest, you vow to serve the parish community or your bishop or the poor, etc. And that is how you serve God. But in marriage, you vow to serve each other. So that was revealing and made me think differently about marriage. So a couple vow to serve each other and eventually, if you kids, you work together to serve them. A priest says in the book, "The life of Marriage is not doing what you like!" Which is true. In singlehood, you can do whatever you want and don't have to answer to anyone. But in marriage, you have to set aside your own interest and desires for the better of your partner and relationship. And that is a real sacrifice that you have to content with. So volunteering and serving others is a great way to prepare for marriage, cause it forces you to focus on helping others. So that's why it's called Love and Responsibility. I love to read another book about L and R. This is best wisdom of the book.

Approximately two weeks before we left for college, my mother presented this book to me from her shelf and suggested that I read it. I think it was overall a positive experience for my first "self help" book, and I can picture myself taking some of the advice. The first half felt applicable (consider how your relationships can be more selfless, how to give mutual support, etc), but I will be taking second half (chastity and modesty as prerequisites for mature and objective love) with a grain of salt.
