The Subjugation of Alice Chandler
Alice Chandler is a politician on the rise. A tough, no-nonsense, statuesque, blonde, blue-eyed beauty, already very popular in the countryside and the wealthy middle-class enclaves, she’s also making a name for herself due to her strongly anti-immigration policies. “Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime,” is one of her favourite slogans. She stands for family values and morality and she’s firmly opposed to the foreign crime gangs that proliferate in the capital.
Her sudden rise in the popularity stakes and her many appearances on TV and social media have brought her name to the attention of millions. One of those is a certain Abdullah Aziz. An unprepossessing, short, balding Pakistani immigrant. His interest in her is twofold. First he’s opposed to posh, entitled, middle-class white Christian women on principle. Second he’s the king of the London criminal underworld and thus presumably the target of her political ambition.
Aziz has risen from the Karachi slums to untold wealth and power for many reasons, ambition and the willingness to use extreme violence when necessary being just two of them, but the real threat that Aziz carries is his intelligence. He likes to plot and to plan, indeed her takes great pleasure in it, like playing chess but with human pieces. The collection of data and information, particularly of the scurrilous kind, is one of his favourite hobbies.
He has blackmailed and extorted many people over the years but his favourite targets are the upper-class white women who shunned him in the past because of his appearance or just the colour of his skin. Now the tables are very much turned. Aziz makes it his business to trap the unwary in his web of corruption. He employs the daughters of Earls in his “gentleman’s” club. He makes the formerly wealthy and powerful dance to his tune.
When Alice Chandler’s squeaky clean image turns out to be a lie, Aziz decides to make an example of her and turn her into his most ambitious project to date. There’s no need for threats or intimidation, Aziz is the master manipulator. He simply chips away at her ego and her self-confidence until, little by little, she falls under his malevolent spell.
