Secret Cases of Baker Street #1

Mrs Hudson and The Whitechapel Murders

Rate this book
The daring heroine who uncovers what Holmes overlooks

Think you know the greatest detective on Baker Street? Think again!

To the world, Mrs Hudson is merely the stooped, grey‑haired landlady of 221B Baker Street — a respectable widow who keeps the rooms tidy while Sherlock Holmes dazzles London with his brilliance.

But the truth is very different.

Behind the grey wig and black dress is a sharp‑minded young woman with an extraordinary past. Once a daring high‑wire performer in a travelling circus, she learned how to keep her balance… and how to move unseen. Now she quietly investigates the small, overlooked cases Holmes dismisses. Until one of them leads straight into terror.

As a wave of brutal murders grips Whitechapel, Mrs Hudson begins to suspect the truth behind the killings is far darker than the newspapers claim. While Holmes pursues the mystery from Baker Street, she slips through London’s alleys, servants’ corridors and hidden corners — following clues no one else can see. But the deeper she digs, the clearer it becomes that the murders are tied to powerful secrets… and dangerous people who will do anything to keep them buried.

And all the while, Holmes remains blissfully unaware that the greatest clue in the case is sitting under his own roof.

Mrs Hudson and The Whitechapel Murders is the first installment in The Secret Cases of Baker Street — a clever, atmospheric historical mystery series that reveals the unseen detective behind London’s most famous address.

Because sometimes the sharpest mind in Baker Street… is the one no one notices.

A very interesting premise, and the mystery, by the end quite good. But the telling took many tangents, long descriptions of the fog, cobblestone, the filth of streets and horses hooves. Many of the descriptions were of trips by bus and Kew Gardens: pages of pointing out places like a sightseeing visit that had nothing to do with the original mystery and then the Ripper murders. The tour with the princess seems only to point out the ills of the time.

Marvelous

Nothing broke me away from this read! The intriguing use of history told from an altogether different angle is refreshing, yet does not allow one to ignore the plight of women in Victorian London. As our heroine navigates the seedy underbelly of a city rife with crime I quietly cheered her on as if she was Holmes himself. 5 stars from me!
