One Liner: Beautiful and vibrant!

Laugh With Me is a cute and vibrant book of anecdotes by none other than the famous Ruskin Bond, who is celebrating his ninety-second birthday this year.

The book has been compiled and designed for children, filled with colors, illustrations, photographs, and most importantly, wonderful advice disguised as little letters.

In a world where kids are pushed to be competitive, do better than others, win every single time, and become overachievers to the point of ending up with burnout even before they hit their teenage years, the book tells them to be happy and accept what life throws at them with a touch of laughter.

In times when parents want their children not to feel sad, bad, mad about losing because failure is triggering and could affect them forever, the book reminds kids that things happen, and that’s more than okay. That’s what makes life a worthy experience.

There are nine chapters/letters in the book, each dealing with a different incident from the author’s life. They are arranged in no particular order or chronology. Adults would have read these (at least a few) on the internet.

Though I finished the entire book in 20 minutes, that’s not how kids are supposed to read it. Take one chapter at a time. Sit with the kids as they read it. Then, talk about the event, the reactions, the message, and what the children think about everything. Do they find it funny? Why and why not? Do they think they’d react the same way if they were in a similar situation? Is it easy to laugh at oneself in awkward situations? What should they do when things don’t go as planned?

The illustrations and formatting are so, so good! Look at the samples below. The pages are full of colors. However, I’m not sure if today’s kids can read all those fonts, so adults may have to help if necessary.

There’s also a list of recommended reads by the author. Some of these are classics (obviously) and have humor in different ways, as well as life lessons. And oh, there’s an afterword too!

My favorite part of the book comes at the end—the photographs!

We had The Cherry Tree story by Ruskin Bond as a part of the English syllabus in school (8th standard, I guess). Though I heard his name before, this was my first introduction to his works. My memory of the story is vague, but I remember the description of the tree, the cherry blossoms, and a kid who spends time under it. The feeling of peace, calm, and excitement that only nature can inspire!

While I like the book, I also wish it were a bit bigger. This kind of printing is expensive, I know. The color print, the thick paper quality, and everything about it scream cost, but the volume of content also matters at times. Maybe not a lot, but another one or two more letters, ones that reinforce why laughing at oneself is not a bad idea and can be healthy when done without putting ourselves down. It’s a fine balance, after all!

My thanks to Blogchatter and Harper Children’s for a copy of the book. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion.

Wonderful reminder to the fact that if we can see the humour in our lives and can laugh at ourselves from time to time - we shall be happy people.
