This is a "getting-started-in-quilting" book that begins at the beginning and teaches the needed basics in a langauge that is straight-forward and understandable. Based on actual classes with beginners, this first quilting book presents information in teach-me, show-me text and photos that work. Where other books present too much information that can overwhelm a beginner, First-Time Quiltmaking presents what a beginner needs to know to get started. Six easy lessons. Four easy projects. Hundreds of step-by-step photos and diagrams.
I should probably hold off on rating this until I actually make a quilt, and see how well the quilt turns out. But anyway, Jenny Knode learned to quilt from this book, and turned out to be an excellent quilter, so I read it too! And I've finally actually read the whole thing.
I am not someone who sews often- but have done the occasional project for gifts or for around the house. I had lost my original beginner quilting book & bought this one as a reference when making a baby quilt for a gift. This book is very clear & good for beginners. The only thing I did not like is the way the book did the borders/bindings- my old book had a much simpler way of doing the borders (thicker border strip, not a skinny binding) & they came out looking much better. I had a bit of a hard time with the edges using this book's method, & will probably go back to my old book for any future projects (once I can find it).
My quilting class used this book to teach us beginning quilting. Very easy to read with lots of pictures. We made a 3x3 foot baby quilt as our first one!
Fantastic book with easy to follow instructions, diagrams and photographs. This seems like a valuable reference that any quilter would want to keep around to refer back to when needed.
Everyone must start somewhere. Moreover, this is an informative book for starting from scratch as we head into our quilting careers. In addition, for those who think they already know everything you may be surprised that this book can show you that one thing you thought you knew.
The book is constructed with hardcovers but a ring-binding spine. The book is divided into six lessons, each lesson is color-coded for easy access. The book goes through terminology and tools. I never noticed that you could place two straight edges next to each other making a sort of T-square.
The colors and pictures make this book as well as a video. The descriptions make it better.
“A quilt is quite simply three layers of cloth with which have been sandwiched together and secured by yarn ties or simple stitches.”
