It's early summer, and things are really heating up between Garry Wallis, star of Lacrosse Face-Off, and his nemesis, Michael Donofrio. At the end of last season, Garry sabotaged Michael's chances of becoming the league's top scorer. Now Michael is taking his revenge. He's got plenty of opportunity, too, for the Rockets are taking part in a week-long lacrosse tournament held at an overnight camp. Garry tries to ignore Michael, but the bullying finally gets to him-and what happens next sets off a string of near-disasters that finds Garry in the heart of a firestorm . . .
This latest installment in Matt Christopher's bestselling series combines all the lacrosse action and mystery his fans crave.
Matt Christopher is the writer young readers turn to when they're looking for fast-paced, action-packed sports novels. He is the best-selling author of more than one hundred sports books for young readers.
Matt Christopher is America's bestselling sports writer for children, with more than 100 books and sales approaching six million copies. In 1992, Matt Christopher talked about being a children's book author.
"I became interested in writing when I was 14, a freshman in high school. I was selling magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and Liberty, and I would read the stories, particularly the adventure and mystery stories, and think how wonderful it would be to be able to write stories and make a living at it. I also read detective, horror, aviation, and sports stories and decided I would try writing them myself.
Determined to sell, I wrote a detective story a week for 40 weeks, finding the time to marry, work, and play baseball and basketball before I sold my first story in 1941, "The Missing Finger Points," for $50 to Detective Story magazine.
After writing and selling children's sports stories to magazines, I decided to write a baseball book for children. I was living in Syracuse, New York at the time, working at General Electric. I spoke about my idea to the branch librarian. She was immediately interested and told me that they needed sports stories badly. So I came up with my first children's book, The Lucky Baseball Bat. I submitted it to Little, Brown, and the book was published in 1954.
I'm sure that playing sandlot baseball and then semiprofessional baseball with a Class C club in the Canadian-American League influenced my writing. I had my own personal experiences, and I saw how other players reacted to plays, to teammates' and fans' remarks and innuendoes, to managers' orders, etc. All these had a great influence on my writing. My love of the game helped a lot, too, of course.
Out of all the books I've written, my favorite is The Kid Who Only Hit Homers. It's a fantasy, but the main character in it could be real. There are a lot of boys who would love to play baseball but, for some reason, cannot. The only difference between a real-life boy and Sylvester Coddmyer III is the appearance of a character named George Baruth, whom only Sylvester can see and who helps Sylvester become a good ballplayer.
I've written many short stories and books for both children and adults, and find that writing for children is really my niche. Being the eldest of nine children (seven boys and two girls), I've lived through a lot of problems many children live through, and I find these problems excellent examples to include in my books.
Sports have made it possible for me to meet many people with all sorts of life stories, on and off the field, and these are grist for this writer's mill. I'm far beyond playing age now, but I manage to go to both kids' and adult games just to keep up with them, and keep them fresh in my mind.Very few things make me happier than receiving fan letters from boys and girls who write that they had never cared for reading until they started to read my books. That is just about the ultimate in writing for children. I would never trade it for another profession."
Matt Christopher died on September 27, 1997. His legacy is now being carried on by his sons, Duane and Dale Christopher.
We interviewed Gary Wallis a star player on the Rockets from the book Lacrosse Firestorm by Matt Christopher. Gary is surrounded by all his best friends on his lacrosse team except for one player named Michael. Michael is one of the better players on the team but he is a bully. Gary and Michael are both competing for the most goals on the team. In order to intimidate and get into Gary’s head, Michael bullies him. Gary is a very determined kid. Once he focuses on a goal there is nothing stopping him to reach that goal.
What inspired you to work so hard at lacrosse What inspired me to work hard was Michael. He inspired because every time he bullied me it made me wanna work even harder. Since I couldn’t stand up for myself at school I put it all on the field.
What is your greatest weakness My greatest weakness is probably being bullied. When I was being bullied by Micheal it really brought my self-esteem down. When I was being bullied couldn't play 100% on the field it distracts me a lot. Why do you play lacrosse I play lacrosse because I love the sport. Lacrosse helps to relieve stress and gets my mind off school and all my problems with bullying. I’ve been playing lacrosse all my life and I’ve always been one of the stars on the team. Lacrosse is also something I love to do in my free time. I really enjoy the adrenaline I get when fighting for the ball against the opponent. Another thing I love is the feeling of winning. How did you deal with bullying It was very unfortunate that I had to deal with bullying and I hope no one will ever have to face bullying ever. But the best way I dealt with it was definitely just ignoring them. If I gave Michael a reaction he would have kept on bullying me. Since I pretended like I didn’t care Michael realized that there is no point why he is doing this. How would you describe yourself I would describe myself as a Harding, loving kid. I am hardworking because whenever I have to do something I do it the best I can. I hate when I see kids that don’t try in stuff they do. I am loving because since I got bullied I try to be as nice as I can be. If you could change anything in your past what would it be If I could change anything in my past I would work harder in school and not focused on lacrosse so much. My grades struggled because I was so focused on the Rockets instead of school work. I got really into trying to be the top scorer and I forgot about school.
I really enjoyed this novel. I felt that this novel would be great for young kids. It would make kids learn a couple lessons. Those lessons are not to bully, and not try to be a big shot all the time. It would also teach kids, and would maybe get young kids to play the sport. This novel was about a kid name Garry Wallis who gets bullied by a kid named Michael. But Garry doesn’t take anything from Michael. Michael is a kind of guy who always thinks he is the best. At the last game of the Rockets (lacrosse team), Michael wants to try to be the leading scorer for his team. Garry Wallis try’s to make it so Michael doesn’t. At the last couple seconds of the game Michael picks up the ball, and scores. But Garry Wallis sabotaged Michael chance of being the leading scorer. Michael tried to seek revenge, but Garry tries to ignore him. Michael is trying ever way in his power to seek revenge. The Rockets are going on a lacrosse tournament, and it is a overnight camp. While trying to ignore Michael, Garry is getting nervous about what Michael is going to do. “What happens next sets off a string of near-disasters that finds Garry in the Heart of a Firestrorm.” Hopefully me explaining this book to you would have you want to read this book. I really enjoyed this book, and hope you would want to read this book.
The book, Lacrosse Firestorm, by Matt Christopher was exciting. At the end of the season, Garry Wallis ruined Michael Donofrios’ chances of becoming the league’s top scorer. Throughout the end of the season, Michael is planning on getting revenge on Garry. The “Rockets”, the boys’ team, is participating in a tournament on the weekend. I personally liked this book because it had a lot of action and emotion. I would recommend this book to people who like sports because it has a lot of tough decisions that an athlete has to make.
