"Consciousness" outlines a Wittgensteinian showing of the nature of consciousness and traces the evolution of consciousness through the animal kingdom. It illustrates certain limits of empirical "proofs" and outlines the linguistic traps which still create duality theories, including the so-called "Hard Problem" of consciousness. The author, John Dale, is a physician, trained in philosophy by one of Wittgenstein's students and very close friend, and he has retained a lifelong interest in consciousness. The book is very well illustrated, and intentionally written for a general audience.
