My father runs the only arms operation in Sicily, and now that the Skull King is monopolizing the drug empire in all of Italy, we’re in hot water.

Because everyone wants to take our business for themselves—because they aren’t strong enough to handle the Skull King.

Just when things are looking bad, Wolfe shows up looking for a job. He was born to inherit the throne of Cosa Nostra, but a mysterious falling out has forced him to turn his back on the only family he’s ever known.

None of us are sure if we can trust him, so he has going to start at the bottom and prove his loyalty. With a cocky smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eyes, he does what he’s told.

But the second he sets eyes on me—I become the real thing he wants. But I’m not dumb enough to get involved with one of the guys at the syndicate, no matter how insanely hot he is, so I tell him it’s never going to happen.

But this man doesn’t stop.

I’m a nurse that stitches bullet holes and keeps my father’s men alive on top of everything else I do for the business, and Wolfe continually cuts and stabs himself because he knows it’s the one way to get alone me alone. While I stitch him up, he stares and smirks at me…like I’m already his.

Even when my father is present, he stares at me the same way—like he doesn’t care if this obsession gets him killed. He’s honest and passionate and smart—but I also think he’s a little crazy.

I finally give in, saying it’s just for the night, but this man wants all of me before he ever touches me. An affair somehow turns into the most intense relationship I’ve ever had, and Wolfe wants to be straight with my father about us even if it gets him killed.

But that’s way too risky, not when our enemies are moving in, not when there’s a snitch in our midst—and everyone thinks it’s Wolfe. Our relationship becomes clandestine and forbidden, and while that would be fun for other men, Wolfe disagrees.

Because he wants me—forever.

When so much is set against us, I’m not sure if our relationship will survive.

But Wolfe believes it will—because he’ll die for it.

Thank you Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the audio ARC

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really wanted to love My Blade, I Protect by Penelope Sky because I normally enjoy her books, but this one just didn’t hit the same for me. The audiobook, though, was amazing. The narrators absolutely carried the story and did such a great job bringing the characters and emotions to life.

The story itself just wasn’t my favorite from her. I kept waiting to fully connect with it, but unfortunately it never really happened for me. It wasn’t bad, just not one I’ll remember compared to some of her other books that I’ve loved.

If you’re already a fan of Penelope Sky, you may still want to give it a try, especially in audio format because the narration was honestly the highlight for me.

Arc Review:

I LOVE Penelope Sky and am always waiting for her next release so I was fired up to get this ARC.

It was just ok, typically the later books in the series are the best so I’m not going to give up on this one. This book really set the scene and the romance up for the next two books. I don’t love the insta love trope.

I think a lot happened just before the book ended and would have liked more plot development in the beginning. It was a quick read so I imagine the next few books will get further into detail regarding the plot.

I do love that these last few series she’s written are loosely connected. I will be reading more in this series, but it just wasn’t my favourite.

🎧 Audiobook Review — By Blade I Protect by Penelope Sky
Narrated by Ramona Master & Michael Ferraiuolo | Dreamscape Media
Advanced Listening Copy provided by NetGalley — thank you!

Tropes:
- Forbidden romance
- Enemies to lovers
- Mafia romance
- Boss’s daughter
- Touch her and die
- Unhinged MMC

This is the first book in Penelope Sky’s new By Blade series, and I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Mafia romance isn’t usually my lane, but this one had me fully locked in from the very beginning.

🎙️ Audiobook Performance
Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo deliver a performance that elevates the story.
- Ramona gives Frankie that perfect blend of competence, exhaustion, and quiet rebellion.
- Michael brings Wolfe’s intensity, danger, and BDE‑level presence straight through the speakers.

Dreamscape Media keeps the production clean, immersive, and emotionally sharp.

🩺 Francesca (Frankie)
Frankie is a nurse who’s been drafted into playing “doctor” for her father’s organization stitching up bullet holes and patching up chaos because, as she says, these idiots don’t know the difference.

She had bigger dreams, but family duty kept her rooted. She’s sharp, capable, and the kind of heroine you root for without hesitation. She’s the calm in the storm… until Wolfe walks in and becomes her personal hurricane.

🔥 Wolfe
Now let’s talk about Wolfe, because this man?
Unhinged.
In the best way.

Everyone in this book is at least a little afraid of him — and honestly, they should be. He’s got the confidence (and the bodies) to back it up. People keep saying he should be running an organization, but he likes being second‑in‑command because it lets him stay sharp, watchful, and just dangerous enough to keep everyone on edge.

But for Frankie?
He’s a cinnamon roll dipped in gasoline.

He wants to devour her, protect her, worship her, and burn down the entire world just to keep her safe and he’d enjoy every second of it. He’s never been faithful, never been serious, never cared enough to try… until her.

And the way he falls? Immediate. Complete. No hesitation.
He quietly and consistently lets her know:
- he will never mess this up
- he will never harm her
- but he will absolutely harm anyone who even thinks about harming her

He’s a 10… just a little murderer.

💥 The Story
For someone who doesn’t usually reach for mafia romance, this one worked beautifully:
- danger without being over the top
- chemistry that simmers
- a heroine with backbone
- a hero who’s intense but not cartoonish
- a plot that actually moves

The pacing is tight, the world feels lived‑in, and the dynamic between Frankie and Wolfe is addictive.

⭐ Final Thoughts
A strong start to a new series with excellent narration, compelling characters, and a storyline that kept me hooked. If this is the energy for the rest of the By Blade series, I’m absolutely coming back for book two.

3.5 rounded to 4

🔥 If you're a fan of mafia romances filled with danger, passion, and intense emotion, By Blade, I Protect is an absolute must-read! Set against the rugged backdrop of Sicily, this story combines the gritty world of organized crime with a forbidden love that will steal your heart. 💔🌹

The heroine, a tough and dedicated nurse, handles bullet wounds and keeps her father’s arms operation afloat while navigating the treacherous waters of loyalty and betrayal. Her strength and resilience make her a truly compelling character. Meanwhile, Wolfe, a charismatic outsider with a mysterious past, walks into her world, claiming he’s starting from the bottom to earn her trust. 🔪

From the moment Wolfe sets eyes on her, sparks fly. ⚡🔥 His cocky smirk and twinkle in his eyes hide a man willing to risk everything, including his life, to be with her. 💘 Despite her initial resistance and her vow to stay clear of the dangerous syndicate, her feelings for him deepen with each stolen moment. Their secret encounters, filled with tension, heat, and raw passion, are impossible to put down. 🔥

As their relationship intensifies, so does the danger around them. Someone in their midst is leaking secrets, and suspicion quickly falls on Wolfe. With enemies closing in and a criminal empire teetering on the edge, they must decide whether love is worth risking everything—even their lives. ⚔️

What makes this story truly special is the blend of raw emotion, suspense, and loyalty. Wolfe’s reckless desire to protect her and her fierce independence create a volatile but beautiful chemistry. 💖🔥 Their love story is a rollercoaster of passion, danger, and sacrifice, culminating in a powerful ending that will leave you breathless. 🌬️💕

Highly recommended for anyone who loves a thrilling, emotional ride with unforgettable characters and a story that proves love can conquer even the most dangerous odds. 💯💕

Thank you to Dreamscape Audio and NetGalley for the ALC!

The audio production and narration were done really well and captured the emotions, tension, and banter between the characters perfectly. My only small complaint is that I wish the male narrator had a little more edge, grit, and growl for the type of character Wolfe is. Even with that, I still really enjoyed both the listening experience and the story itself.

You have Wolfe, our MMC, who is part of the Cosa Nostra mafia. After disagreements within the business, he leaves and joins a rival mafia family in Sicily. He’s a killer, dangerous, and quickly becomes completely infatuated with Francesca-aka Franky-the daughter of his new boss.

Franky and Wolfe begin sneaking around behind her father’s back, and Wolfe falls hard. He’s possessive, obsessive, and honestly? This man purposely injured himself just so she would patch him up (because, yes, she’s basically the mafia daughter nurse). Franky spends a good portion of the story trying to deny him and fight her feelings, but eventually she falls just as hard.

I do think Franky’s character felt a little toned down at first, but once she finally lets herself fall—and especially when anger takes over after something she believes Wolfe did—we finally get to see her personality explode onto the page. That was the version of her I loved. A true Italian mafia daughter.

The banter in this book is hilarious, sexy, chaotic, and unbelievably toxic in the best way possible. This was a fun listen overall. Aside from my one narration complaint above, the story delivered exactly what I wanted: spicy, sexy, toxic, dramatic, and everything you expect from a mafia romance. 🔥🖤

One thing about mafia romance? I WILL eat it up every time.

By Blade, I Protect was genuinely impossible to put down.

We follow Frankie, a nurse working for her father’s Sicilian arms operation, stitching up bullet wounds while chaos unfolds around her family business. Then Wolfe shows up; former mafia royalty with a suspicious past, zero chill, and an immediate obsession with Frankie.

And when I say obsessed… I mean this man is literally getting injured on purpose just so she has to patch him up.

YOUR HONOR... I LOVE HIM.

Wolfe is cocky, charming, slightly unhinged, and absolutely relentless. This man does NOT believe in personal space, emotional restraint, or giving up once he decides he wants someone.

Meanwhile, Frankie is trying so hard not to fall for him because: He works for the syndicate.
Nobody fully trusts him. There’s potentially a traitor in the middle of all this mafia chaos.

But Wolfe is looking at her like he already decided she belongs to him forever.

The chemistry in this book was INSANE. Passionate, addictive, with tension-filled perfection.

And underneath all the romance, there’s actually a lot happening with the mafia politics, danger, betrayal, and power struggles, which made the story feel way bigger than just the romance.

Also the audiobook narration was SO GOOD. The performances brought every intense stare, argument, and emotional moment to life perfectly. Great performances by Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo.

&& with that ending.... I immediately needed book two.

Thank you to the author Penelope Sky for the gifted book and Dreamscape Media for the gifted alc through Netgalley. All thoughts are mine.

Confession: protective obsessive MMCs ruin my standards every single time.

Book 2 ⭐ | Audio 3.5 ⭐ | Spice 3 🌶️

I just finished the Roman Republic series and when I saw Skull King for this next episode, I was curious to check out where the story is going. RR had good characters, so I hoped that would carry over to this next set. I'm also a fan of the mafia/possessive/suspense tropes that Penelope is known for. So I was really hoping for another gripping series to get drawn back into. Cover: YES please. Description: Some repetitious escalation and tropey labels, but also "twinkle in his eyes" and "does what he's told" are not really on my mafia romance bingo card.

Unfortunately, this one didn't work at all. The first few chapters read like vlogs, detailing what the character is doing for the day. It didn't read well as setting up the story. It wasn't compelling or engaging. I couldn't get invested in the characters at all. They didn't feel well developed. They felt like trope cards on a cork board with lines drawn between them, and the writing didn’t sound like Penelope Sky’s voice. It didn’t fit with the last series at all and lacked its engagement and quality.

As a result, the relationship, even though it's insta, just didn't read as genuine. Mostly convenient. RR had strong character interest early, so why not this one?

Audiobook
Ramona Master was a good casting choice, she did a great job and an easy listen. Michael Ferraiuolo voiced the MMC in RR and now this one and I'm not a fan. I got through RR with him, but he's not my favorite voice. Also not the worst. But I got bored listening to him in this one. And he's not a good casting choice for a 6'5" man. He gives soft and short energy, not menace and mafia. The voice quality doesn't fit the character. Sometimes this factor alone is enough to wreck an audiobook experience.

** This review is for the Audiobook narrated by Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo ***

I gave the audiobook of By Blade, I Protect by Penelope Sky 3 out of 5 stars. One of the highlights for me was the dual POV format, which allowed readers to experience the story through both Wolfe and Frankie. Having access to both perspectives helped build their relationship and gave more insight into their motivations, making the audiobook an engaging listen. Loved the narrators/

I gotta be honest....while there is definitely a storyline, I'm not entirely sure I would classify this as simply a romance or even a "mature" romance. Wolfe is unapologetically direct about what he wants and what he likes, and the book doesn't shy away from that aspect of his personality. Combined with the dark mafia setting, the story contains plenty of violence, bloodshed, and ruthless behavior that fans of the genre will likely expect.

Despite some ridiculous moments, I found the story intriguing and easy to get through. The pacing kept me interested, and I finished the audiobook fairly quickly. While I wouldn't recommend taking the premise too seriously, it was an entertaining read that left me curious enough to continue with the series and see where Wolfe and Frankie's story goes next.

Thank you to Penelope Sky and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley, Penelope Sky, and Dreamscape Media for the ALC!

While I have several of Penelope Sky’s books on my TBR, By Blade, I Protect was the first one I listened to on audio. The audiobook features dual narration, and both narrators did a great job. I was hooked from the beginning.

This is my first mafia and insta-love romance. I enjoyed how both tropes worked well together. Wolfe leaves the Cosa Nostra because of concerns about its direction and morality, and he ends up approaching another family of arms dealers in hopes of securing a job. When he sees Francesca (Frankie), and she sees him, they are instantly smitten with each other.
I enjoyed watching their relationship grow from what should have been a one-night stand into something much more meaningful. Their connection developed in a way that kept me engaged and made me want to keep listening.

It took me only a day and a half to finish By Blade, I Protect because I was so invested in the story and I didn’t want to stop listening. The book sets the stage for the beginning of a new series from Penelope Sky that are interconnected to her previous series. It ends on a cliffhanger, so I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next installment to see where Frankie and Wolfe’s journey go next.

3.5🌟 I received an ALC from NetGalley for this book. I’ve never read anything from this author but I’ve seen a few of her books on booktok so I was interested in it because I love mafia romances. Wolfe is completely 110% unhinged. This is an insta love romance, no build up whatsoever, so if that isn’t your cup of tea, you may want to skip this. There is a lot of action in this book which I always appreciate in mafia romances. This book does end on a cliffhanger and looks to be planned for a 3 book series.
Overall, this wasn’t my favorite story as I didn’t really feel the connection between the MMC & FMC. It just seemed like they were together as soon as they looked at each other. The overall plot of the mafia war carried this story.

Since this was an ALC, I will speak on the narration. The narrators did a good job with the story. They acted out the scenes with emotion & personality. They did struggle with voicing the opposite sex some as this was a dual narration.

Review of By Blade, I Protect
by Penelope Sky
Narrated by Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo

3⭐️ | 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

The narration was well done, with both narrators bringing the characters to life. The hero is an intense, possessive character, and readers should be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in—this is a very dark mafia romance.

The story follows the daughter of a mafia don and a man who becomes part of her family after leaving another criminal organization. His devotion to her is immediate and all-consuming, giving the romance a strong instalove feel. While the story held my interest and kept me listening, it often felt as though parts of the plot or character development were missing, leaving some elements underexplored.

Fans of dark, possessive heroes and mafia romance may enjoy this one, but readers looking for deeper relationship development may find themselves wanting more.

Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to listen and review.

Thank you to Dreamscape Audio and Penelope Sky for this ALC. By Blade, I Protect is narrated by Ramona Master & Michael Ferraiuolo. I really enjoyed this on audio. Ramona and Michael captured our characters perfectly, the tension, the emotions, I felt it all.

Story review: If you know me, you know I am obsessed with mafia romance and therefore obsessed with Penelope Sky. She writes the most red flag men who actually end up being more green flag golden retrievers than you ever would have thought. And Wolfe is no different. He is dark and dangerous but he is DOWN BAD for Frankie. He is obsessive and possessive and will do anything to see her. Frankie is a strong mafia daughter who also happens to be the family's doctor (nurse).

This story is funny, a little over the top in the best way, action packed, and VERY spicy. I know book 2 is going to be even better!

this was a lil too insta lusty for me. these two were obsessed with each other almost immediately and i just couldn’t fully buy into it. wolfe was down catastrophically from the second he looked at her and while i usually love obsessive MMCs… this one felt more intense than emotional.

the whole “i’ll stab myself just to see you” thing was definitely a choice. like sir PLEASE stand up for a second.

i did enjoy the mafia setting and there was enough going on with the family drama, betrayal, and danger to keep me reading, but the relationship moved so fast that i never really got attached to them as a couple. everything felt very “you’re mine forever” before i even felt actual chemistry between them.

thank you netgalley for the arc!🖤

From the description of this book, I thought I would love it and while I won't say this is a 5 star read for me, I still enjoyed it. Sometimes the insta-lust doesn't work for me, but for some reason it did here and I liked Wolf and Frankie together. I like that Frankie got what she wanted from Wolf in the bedroom and was unapologetic about it. Some of the scenes were a little over the top but I have come to expect that when it comes to this genre. I really enjoyed the audio narration by Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo and I think without the audio I wouldn't have liked this as much. Overall this was a fun time and I'm looking forward to continuing this series.

Cliffhanger
Dual POV - 1st person

Dual narration - Ramona Master & Michael Ferraiuolo
I really like these two narrators. Their voices are pleasant.

Book #1 Tanto Syndicate series

GAHHHH! Ok I have enjoyed Penelope Sky's writing. This one was good but those dang cliffhanger endings kill me. I wish these were in duet narration, both narrators did a wonderful job but I felt duet narration would give it that extra edge.

The story is gripping and kept me on the edge of my seat. These characters are deeply captivating. I ate this book up. Now I need book 2 like right now!

By Blade, I Protect was an absolute one-day sitting read for me. Penelope Sky knows exactly how to pull you into a story and keep you completely hooked from beginning to end. The tension, the chemistry, the danger, and the emotional depth all blended together perfectly.

Wolf and Frankie completely stole the show for me. Their dynamic had me fully invested, and now I desperately need to know what happens next! That ending left me scrambling for the next book immediately.

The audiobook narration was phenomenal and brought every scene to life so vividly. The emotion and intensity in the performances made this story even more addictive. Easily a five-star listen and read for me.

I was so excited to see a new Penelope Sky book! I’m happy to say it was really good!

Our fmc is Francesca (aka Frankie) and she’s the daughter to an old school arms deal business. She’s a nurse and helps stitch up her father’s men.

Wolfe was part of the Cosa Nostra but recently left due to moral differences. He goes to Frankie’s dad to get a job and become a part of the family.
Understandable no one’s really sure about him.
For Wolfe, he gets one look at Francesca and he’s hooked.

I love the instant chemistry and how determined Wolfe is to get his woman.
There was a lot of action. It was fast paced and I was entertained!

The audiobook was great. Both narrators did a great job.

It does end on a cliffhanger and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

3 stars - overall a good story and I enjoyed the narrators. I love all of Penelopy sky's books, but this one just did not completely catch me. I did enjoy of getting the inside of the Skull king and Cosa Nostra since I just finished reading The Savage.

I absolutely loved the Morally grey MMC!! Wolfe was EVERYTHING! The FMC Franky was also great! there sexual chemistry was phenomenal and spicy was great, but the plot was lacking and so much happened at the end of the book and ends with a cliff hanger.

Both narrators delivered strong performances and fit their characters well. Their scenes weren't overdone, and the narration helped bring the characters and their connection to life.

Overall, this was a solid 3.5-star read for me, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

What an engaging story about a made man and a mafia princess. Spicy scenes are on point and boy do they deliver. Makes you want to find a mafia man for yourself, one that will tear the world down to protect you at all costs. She is strong all on her own, taking down a floor full of men to keep herself alive until he can get to her. Any woman who can stitch up wounds and bullet holes is one tough cookie in my book. Def give this one listen if you enjoy some fire!

I love a mafia romance. This one is set in a beautiful winery in Sicily. It’s an insta love story with lots of passion and fire. There is lots of substance to the story and I have a feeling this is going to end up being quite the series. The narration is great, the voices are very well suited to the characters. I immediately hated the male narrator, so I struggled early on.

I found the insta love a little un-believable.
And the writing felt immature, specifically the explicit scenes.

Ok so he’s a 6'5" arrogant asshole, but also super confident, hot, and lovebombing 24/7. I’m conflicted, but daddy, I like him 🫠

The plot unraveled quickly — it wasn’t boring for a second, and I wish we got more time with Wolfe 😭 Nice read, loved the narration, and I’m looking forward to more books from the same universe!

This one is a solid 3 star for me. Even though this one didn't hit like her books normally does, the audiobook was amazing. The narrators absolutely carried the story and did such a great job bringing the characters and emotions to life.

This book really didn't feel completed as I kept waiting for it to connect for me. I think I was just comparing it to other ones, but I would still give this one a try- especially in the audio format.

All in all a solid 3 star. Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.

While the narrators were top notch, unfortunately the storyline did not add up. While I typically enjoy every minute of Penelope Sky's releases, this one just missed. The characters were flat and the emotion was not up to par. The best part was when the FMC went Rambo on her attackers. Hopefully the series will pick up strength with the next book.
