Taming The Invisible Dragon: Healing, Happiness & Self-Realization

Rate this book
There are millions of people in transition today, i.e., in the process of personal and spiritual transformation. The transformation process can be simultaneously frightening and awe-inspiring. Existential pain often precedes spiritual growth: thus, many find it difficult to stay the course. Periods of depression, anxiety, and confusion can often accompany the transition process. As such, it can be difficult to remain devoted to the journey of transformation. For those who do, something awakens within them and they realize, perhaps for the first time, they can find joy and peace. With this realization, their journey takes on new depth and meaning. Before long, they find themselves seeking out others who have traveled the same path. From fellow travelers, they find the guidance and encouragement they need to understand the transformation process and to keep going in the most difficult times of their transition. Taming The Invisible Dragon provides guidance, inspiration, and hope to those who are on the transformational journey. In this heart-felt and inspirational book, author Sloan Rawlins shares the insights and hard-earned wisdom she obtained during her own personal journey. Having survived severe child abuse, a near death experience, and incapacitating illness, Sloan reconnected with her spirit and learned to create authentic happiness, peace, and joy in her own life. She blends elements of spiritual philosophy, depth psychology, and personal experience into an easy to read guide for personal and spiritual transformation. It is a must read for those who have the desire and determination to heal their wounds, to change their thoughts, and to create better tomorrows.

In order to keep my journalistic integrity intact, I must start by saying I received my copy of the book straight from the author herself - with the proviso that I would tell others about it if I liked it. Well, I do like it, so I am sharing my review.

In the introduction, Ms. Rawlins freely admits she has no educational credentials pertaining to writing a self help book, but rightly points out that sometimes the "school of hard knocks" gives credentials enough. The first three chapters bear this out remarkably well. The first two chapters and a portion of the third are a remarkably frank description of the very hard life Ms. Rawlins lived up until the point at which she decided things needed to change.

The remaining chapters each cover a different element of the changes she believes a person must make to "change their minds, improve their circumstances, and set their spirits free" - and here might be a good place to mention something important. There are many references to "God" and "The Divine" throughout the book, but the author very clearly points out that these terms are for convenience sake only - the book is entirely non-denominational when it comes to belief systems. Just substitute the terms "God" and "The Divine" with whatever your belief system uses.

Many of the chapters also feature useful mental exercises that one can use to assist themselves in bringing about the changes they need to make. I personally found some that I plan to use or have already used to start my personal journey of change.

I don't really want to say too much about the individual chapters so as not to give out "spoilers", so I'll move on to the critique and my score for the book.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The great:

Ms. Rawlins writes in a very conversational tone that makes one feel she is speaking directly to you, the reader.

Many of the elements of change might sound like common sense, but the author goes well beyond the usual common sense meanings of the chapter titles and really digs in deep on each subject.

The author does a very good job of making the book a coherent, complete guide. Though she opens each chapter with an inspirational quote, and mentions several other works she found helpful while writing the book, she does not fall into the first-time author trap of padding the book with other writers' quotes. The book is 99.9% Sloan Rawlins.

Although a first time author, I came away believing that Ms. Rawlins really does have the credentials to offer the advice she does, and that said advice is sound and helpful.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The not so great:

Ms. Rawlins does fall into the first-time writer trap of occasionally repeating herself a bit too much at certain times.

There are a few short sections of the book in which the author over-explains some concepts.

Some of the personal information at the beginning is left a bit vague, although I'm assuming that's more for privacy's sake than anything.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, my positive observations well outweigh the somewhat petty negative observations I have listed, so I have no problem giving this book 4 stars.

I've read a number of self-help style books on my journey to transform my life, and this one is written with the wisdom of experience. The words are honest and authentic, explaining her techniques and methods to transform her life. She shares enough of her background to inform the reader she speaks from her heart. She neither preaches or teaches, simply shares in the hopes something in her book will help provide your own transformation through self-realization, change and growth, leading you to live a happier, well-balanced life. I'm a yoga instructor, Reiki Master & Life Coach, and I encourage anyone who is looking for a guide book to help them on their life's journey towards their dream life to read this book and tame their own invisible dragon. Namaste!
