Dr. Glenn Shepard was raised on a farm in eastern Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship and majored in psychology. As an undergraduate, he lettered in wrestling for three years in a row. Then, he went on to become the only person in UVA history to letter in wrestling again in his sophomore year in medical school.

After completion of med school at UVA, he went to Vanderbilt where he completed his residency in general and cardiovascular surgery. He spent two years in the Army at the Ft. Gordon Army Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and The Second Surgical Hospital in An Khe, Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he wrote his first work of fiction, Surge, which is on his back burner of works to dig out of the attic and publish, with major revisions, in the future.

For 28 years, he founded and directed The Peninsula Cranio-Facial deformities clinic that was staffed by volunteer medical, dental, social services, psychology, and speech pathology experts. The group treated over five hundred patients with cleft lips and palates, as well as a variety of deformities of the face and hand.

After the massive earthquake in Haiti in January, 2010, Dr. Shepard emerged from retirement and joined the Notre Dame Hospital unit in Leogane, Haiti for a 10 day rotation. His empathy for the people and their problems as well as his admiration for the contributions of time and talent from medical personnel from all over the world greatly inspired his second novel, Relief Aid, Haiti.

Not For Profit, Dr. Shepard's first thriller, follows plastic surgeon Dr. Scott James as he tries to clear his name of two murders of which he's been falsely accused. As James hunts down the evidence that might free him, he faces a barrage of threats to his life and liberty—and makes one chilling discovery after another.

The Zombie Game cover, title and blurb drew me into this Dr Scott James thriller and the action, suspense and mystery never let me go.

Dr Scott James is a plastic surgeon who was working on the hospital ship, Ana Brigette, trying to do his best for the Haitian people after the earthquake that annihilated the island. He never could have foreseen what was to come and I doubt he would have changed his mind if he knew. He is that kind of man. He only wanted to help and heal people, to save lives…but when necessary he can and will kill. I love a character that is tough on the outside and soft on the inside, know what I mean?

The peripheral characters…well I hated them and loved them, but JakJak is one I want to see more of. I was afraid Glenn would kill him off, but he managed to survive and developed into a character I want to know more about. I think he has a great story to tell and I want to “hear” it. What do you think, Glenn…could he be next?

I love kickass female characters and I know Elisabeth has one hell of a story to tell. I have a feeling she will keep popping up, and who knows, maybe she will earn a book of her own?

We have an earthquake ravaged Haiti, their billions of dollars contained in the Relief Aid Fund, ISIS terrorists, the Pope, zombies, voodoo, action, mystery and suspense that left me wanting more.

I see more books coming and I will be following Glenn Shepard to be sure I don’t miss any of them.

REVIEW: The Zombie Game Glenn Shepard

Dr. Scott James, the hero of The Zombie Game, reminds me of many of the “supercops” featured on primetime television shows, only Dr. James is designed by an genuine physician (the author), so his medical explanations are actually accurate.

I love reading a book with well-researched issues, crises, and groups of interest within countries. Throughout this book, there were several areas that could have detracted attention from the text if the author hadn’t been well-versed in the issues important to the areas referenced. The writing was compelling enough to keep a reader engaged in the novel from beginning to end.

While I try to avoid spoilers whenever possible, I do want to mention my one area of slight dissatisfaction with The Zombie Game. I felt the name of the book was a bit misleading; while zombies were a part of the action, they weren’t involved to the level one would expect by the title or by the blurb on the back of the book. That being said, the mystery was quite compelling nonetheless.

Dr. Scott James is an interesting character. I wish I’d read the books that came before this book in the series, simply to familiarize myself with the recurring characters. The Zombie Game stands perfectly well by itself. It’s just that, after reading The Zombie Game, I want to know more about Dr. James. He’s an intriguing man and I want to read the rest of the series to see if I can find out more about him, as well as about his multi-talented friend, Elizabeth Keyes.

I rate this book 4 fabulous stars!

the Zombie Game

Great book!! Doctor James is one cool headed guy. Not sure about his doctoring but he sure can get in a lot of trouble without even trying.

Glenn Shepard in his new book, “The Zombie Game” Book Two in the Dr. Scott James series published by Great Adventures Press gives us another adventure with Dr. Scott James.

From the back cover: ISIS terrorists are plotting to kill the Pope during his visit to America. The plan: Hijack a hospital ship in Haiti, convert it to a missile launcher, and cruise into Miami Harbor, unnoticed. Their only obstacle: Dr. Scott James is a volunteer on the ship, and he’s recruited a squad of Haitian zombies to stop the attack. But nothing adds up … until the last seven minutes.

The real Zombies of Haiti come alive in this story of a plastic surgeon, a man who “fixes people’s faces,” racing to stop a plot to kill the Pope during his Papal visit to America. Follow Dr. Scott James as he falls into an incredible world of psychotropic drugs, exotic ceremonies, and murder.

MEET JAKJAK, DEAD MAN: Jacques Jacobo, “Jakjak,” is the Haitian Finance Minister’s personal bodyguard. He’s just taken two bullets in the chest trying to stop an assassination attempt on his boss.

DR. SCOTT JAMES, TARGET: Dr. Scott James is a volunteer surgeon on a hospital ship anchored off the coast of earthquake-ravaged Haiti. He’s got his share of personal demons.

OMAR FAROK, MASTERMIND: Omar Farok wants to rule ISIS, and the world. He’s just taken over the hospital ship and converted it into a launch platform for a nuclear strike on Miami.

SANFIA, VODOUN BOKOR: Sanfia is the most powerful Vodoun priestess in Haiti. Omar Farok will pay her big money to turn Dr. James into a zombie.

ELIZABETH, THE WILDCARD: Beautiful Elizabeth is one of the most notorious freelance operatives in the world. She’s come to Haiti to defuse the bomb.

They’re all about to play The Zombie Game.

Dr. Shepard is in top form. From the very beginning this is an exciting read and it gets more exciting as you go on. The Pope is going to visit America. The Plan is to drop a missile on him wiping both him and Miami out of existence. What no one had counted on was Dr. James. He is planning on stopping them if they do not kill him first. With “The Zombie Game” Dr. Shepard has given us a thriller that becomes more and more exciting until the last hundred pages which is an extremely wild ride. Dr. Shepard is an excellent writer and knows how to twist your nerve endings as he tightens the suspense. What is totally fascinating is that everything that Dr. Shepard provides is perfectly believable and possible could happen some day. On top of everything this is quite an engrossing thriller that will have you muttering “oh, no” as you are reading as fast as you can to get to the next page. Don’t start this book late at night as it will cost you sleep sleep as you will not want to put it down. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series.

Although this is the second book in the series, it is easy to read as a stand-alone. There is some mention of events from the first book, but they are not integral in understanding the story presented here.

Dr. Scott James is a fascinating main character. As is true of many main characters, he has a very human flaw to make him more relatable to the reader. He is also one of those men who likes to appear tough on the outside, but who we find out is not so tough on the inside. He genuinely cares about people and wants to help them.

As far as the other characters in the story--sometimes I loved them, sometimes not so much. The only one I enjoyed all the way through, without exception, was JakJak. He is a very unique character, and you can see how his beliefs influence many of the choices he makes in the story.

I loved that the plot of this story, which involved ISIS, is so current and so believable, even if it was a little scary to think about. There is non-stop action, and you'll be anxious to see how it all plays out.

The Zombie Game is about a terrorist group, ISIS, wanting to assassinate the Pope. In order for them to fulfill their plan, they have to steal a medical ship. In the process, the leader of the group, wants Sanfia to create a zombie army which involves Dr. James in the scheme of things.

The Zombie Game is intriguing! When I first started the book, I wasn't sure what the whole story was supposed to be about, but when I really started getting into the book, it made sense. The "zombies" in The Zombie Game actually surprised me. I guess I might have been expecting The Walking Dead zombies. I felt these zombies were more mind controlled.

I will admit that I have a soft spot for Jakjak. I felt like the other characters brushed him aside even when he was trying to save them. I found that made him more "noticeable." ISIS's plans were actually awesome. Sometimes, I think "bad guy" plans are lame, but Mr. Shepard did a great job thinking their part out.

I would recommend this book to anyone into thriller, suspense or fiction. Overall I think The Zombie Game is four and a half stars!

ISIS is planning on dropping a missile on the Pope while he is visiting Miami. The key to the plan is to steal a medical ship, Ana Brigette to create an army of zombies. But what they didn’t count on was Dr. Scott James to be on that ship. After an earthquake hit Haiti, Scott is there trying to help the people of Haiti. Scott is going to do whatever he can to keep the assassination from happening.

Dr. Scott James is a plastic surgeon trying to help the earthquake survivors. But there is more to the eye with this guy. He has no problem killing those that have it coming and I love that about main characters. I admit that when I see Zombie in the title I’m thinking the classic walking dead out for brains but these zombies work for the story.

There is lots of action and a good mystery that didn’t really add up until the end. Although this book is a sequel I had no problem following along. I have not read Not For Profit, but after reading The Zombie Game I will definitely be adding it to my read list.

If you are looking for a great thriller make sure to check out The Zombie Game.

The Zombie Game was not what I was expecting. It was a pleasant surprise and an enjoyable read. The name is what got me since zombies appear to be everywhere, this was not what I was expecting, you had terrorism, voodoo, romance, and excitement all rolled into one quick read. The pages just seemed to turn themselves it read so fast. The pacing of the book was quite good it ramped up nicely, however the ending felt a little abrupt but, not disappointing. This is the second novel in the series and I will be checking out the first and all future installments.

Well that was an amazing journey from Zombies in Haiti to The pope in Miami. Non stop action at various venues. I loved the structure of the story with surprises round every corner. The characters were excellent, well described and came to life with the storyline. Great fun reading this one.
