Adam's world is winding down. A mysterious event takes place which speeds up the rate of decay. Global disasters accelerate, followed by other - more bizarre - manifestations. A bloodthirsty cult arises believing they have found the one thing to stave off the death process. Now, Adam must decide whether to embrace a strange priest's impossible suggestion and lead a small group of survivors across an apocalyptic landscape where all their hopes may lie in one, very unlikely cure.

I downloaded Unalive to my Kindle when it was free on Amazon (my favorite way to find new authors, by the way). I was skeptical. I am not a fan of zombie anything. To put this book into the zombie genre was very shortsighted of me. If you enjoy Dystopian Lit (Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Divergent), but tire of the pop-culture degradation we have begun to see within the genre, as more and more books become Hollywood's jackpot, you'll enjoy this author's first book. How many more protagonists will we meet who are made in the image of Jennifer Lawrence? In Unalive, you will find yourself cautiously smitten with the underdog-protagonist, Adam Gardner (think of Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption). His failure to save those he loved most, sets off a cleverly-penned domino effect, which leaves Adam with (literally) the blood of many on his hands. Can Adam procure the antidote in time? Read the book to find out...
This was soooo much more than just a zompoc novel. It was true horror, suspense, science-fiction, and also contained an underlying current of hope that kinda made my day. You can read the synopsis up there at the top or on my blog. Here I am just going to tell you that it was a great read, I didn't want to put it down and I can't wait for the next installment. Please see my blog post for further details about the book and the upcoming movie!!
UnAlive is hailed as “Night of the Living Dead meets The Book of Eli.” I had to watch Book of Eli after reading UnAlive to see if the comparison fits. I would have to say that UnAlive is better than the comparison to Night of the Living Dead suggests, but The Book of Eli is not a bad comparison.
UnAlive starts with a decent hook; the mysterious character, Cian of the Nomos, the half-lives. It sets the tone that something unusual is going to happen in a way that leaves you curious to learn more.
Something is happening in the world and, at first glance, it seems to be some kind of an attack. General Pitman Grady leads the military investigation. Dr. Kwom Thomas joined them as an unwilling guest brought in at the suggestion of Susan Grey.
Meanwhile Adam Gardner’s world is turned upside down and destroyed during what would have been a peaceful afternoon in the country with his wife and two sons, if not for the sudden withering death of the vegetation around him, followed by the movement of frightening shapes coming from the woods accompanied by terrible noises. But this seems to be a dream and Adam awakes in prison. We soon learn that it is memories, not a dream.
UnAlive jumps between the military’s attempts to find out what is going on in a world that seems to be dying en mass, Dr. Kwon Thomas’ The Two Natures study from his attempts to research the strange mass deaths of flora and fauna and worldwide collapse of life, an old priest, and Adam Gardner’s life in jail and flashbacks to his life before.
When the zombies, dubbed the UnAlive, take over the world, it becomes a race for survival and against extinction of the human species. Meanwhile the Nomos, or half-lives, have their own agenda. I would describe the Nomos as vampires before I would call them zombies.
I was wary when I was asked to review a zombie apocalypse book. I couldn’t help the inward groan. I hoped for the best and was ready for the worst. The obsession with zombies since Walking Dead made its debut has resulted in a saturation of bad zombie everything, and there have been too many bad zombie movies and books before that. For the record, I do not dislike zombies themselves. It’s just that the majority of zombie movies and my few attempts at reading a zombie book have been B movie grade at best - B for B.A.D. I do, however love The Walking Dead. So you have some idea where my standards lie in the zombie world. This book was worth the read.
In UnAlive Kevin J. Fitzgerald gives us a zombie vampire apocalypse with some good descriptions of faces eating themselves from the inside and some scenes that would be Walking Dead worthy if they were adapted to film by a good director and film team. The book has enough suspense to draw you deeper into the story.
UnAlive is self-published by Kevin J. Fitgerald and is available on Amazon and Goodreads.

First off ... I like apocalyptic stories (as a rule). Secondly I appreciate the feeling that an author has thought out and researched a novel (especially if science is introduced). That being said ... I also respect the author's intent if the pace of the book changes or a question is left unanswered. For this story ... Fitzgerald is God. This is His story. And I like it! UnAlive takes a unique position on an old concept. Visual and suspenseful, this thriller will cause a debate ... in a non-traditional way ... zombies or vampires? Get hooked right away ... and stay caught up to the end.
All I can say is "Wow!" Don't be misled by the title or genre of this book... IT WAS AMAZING! While typically NOT a fan of the whole post-apocalyptic thing, this book has SO MUCH MORE going on... Seriously! A fascinating premise, it really touches upon some key issues that are very relevant to the days in which we live (especially when it comes to ecology). And the symbolism ROCKS! Twists and turns at every corner. If you're a lover of deeply-woven-together ideas, you owe it to yourself to check this out! I can't wait for Book 2 in the series!
I really want to like this book. So far, I just can't get into it. Maybe because I read at bed time and am super tired so I enjoy very linear stories that don't require a lot of memory function. This one starts out all over the place introducing what I assume will be major players in the overall story. I have no doubt all is tied together in grand fashion but for right now, I'll give it a 3 and back on the to-read shelf it goes.
Excellent novel!! I'm not into the zombie genre per say but this was recommended by a friend and I'm glad they did! I've already recommended it to a several of my friends! Great concept! Twists and turns, could not wait to get to the next chapter. Easy and quick read, page turner, could not put the tablet down once I started! I'm looking forward to all future works by the author!
I loved this book to death (and beyond!) Engaging, surprising and deep. This book kept my rapt attention, made me tear up (twice) and shocked me on more than one occasion. I especially loved Chester. Great book, exciting, thought provoking and gruesome. Awesome!
Refreshing look on the Zombie theme, a work of fiction yet gave me food for thought in regards to the end of days. Well done and looking forward to the second act!
I wanted to like this book more than I really did. It had a really interesting concept. My problem with it was that it seemed slow at times and I often lost interest which made it hard for me to pick back up and read
The story grabbed me on the first page. With multiple plot twists and and quick character development, the main character is not revealed until 2/3 thru the story. Classic good vs evil but no one is sure who is who. When is the sequel??!!!!
