Playing With Fire

Rate this book
*****This book is recommended for a mature audience. 18 and up. Due to some language and sexual experiences. My name is Laken Thompson, and I have come up with an idea that is too good to surpass. Being a twenty five year old that just graduated college and has accrued an insane amount of debt it’s the best thing I can think of. I am auctioning off the most precious thing I have. My virginity. What I wasn’t planning on was the man that changed everything. Asher Braxton, the epitome of stunning. The man that has everything, except for me. I’ve run for months from the devilishly handsome man stalking me like some prey. Just when I thought I evaded his advances his voice is the one I hear to make a bid. On shaky legs I pray that someone will outbid him, but the thought in my head is… I’m playing with fire and this time I hope I don’t get burned.

After reading this authors debut novel, Barred, I was looking forward to reading more of her books. Paisley didn't disappoint me with this little gem.

Told in two points of view this is the story of the oh so hot alpha male Asher and the feisty Laken. Asher is a wealthy business man who has been after Laken for two years. Totally loved Asher but my view of Laken kept changing throughout the story.

Great storyline with brilliant characters including the secondary characters. Looking forward to reading more from Paisley .

I was given this book for an honest review. It's the 2nd book I've read by the newbie author Paisley Walker. It's not something I would normally read, but I really liked it! It started off kinda slow. It took a while to get to the actual auctioning of her virginity part but it quickly picked up & redeemed itself!

Laken is a struggling college student that had a pretty rough life. She don't have much to her name but hopes with a good job after college, she can be a better version of herself! When life gives Laken more lemons, the only thing she can figure out to do is either go work for the hotty millionaire, Asher, or do something drastic! Drastic she chose! Laken decided she would auction off her virginity to the highest bidder. We all know how that will go! NO WAY Asher will let anyone get near her or her virginity! For me, it was a little predictable. She came across as really bitchy & self-righteous. That annoyed me!

It was nice to watch Laken blossom from this cranky innocent young woman to a strong confident woman. After a while, her walls start coming down and Asher starts learning more about this complicated woman. When tragedy strikes, no one is safe! Can Asher save Laken from herself & her past? Will it be too much for their relationship to stand? Find out with Playing With Fire! I can't wait for Blakely's story!

All I can say with this story is that the time inconsistencies drove. me. nuts!!!

First it was two weeks since they met. Then, it's two years since he's been chasing her (in the matter of a flip of the page). Then it was three years, then a week since they last saw each other, then a month (in the matter of a flip of the page).

I kept going back to see if maybe I missed something and I wasn't losing my mind.

And as for the H and h? It was like two children sticking their tongue out at each other say "nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah". Asher's way of trying to "win" Laken's attention/heart was by bringing dates to the bar where she worked and then taking them home to screw them.

What a charmer.

And Laken's way of dealing with being in love with him since day one was to be a total bitch every time she opened her mouth.

And it takes her selling off her virginity to get them to get together. Nice.

And the unnecessary drama in the end with Georgia? Where the heck did that even come from?!

*Arc provided for honest review*

I went into this book with a whole other mind set, it wasn't any where near what I expected but I still liked it. I don't think the title is fitting but thats just my opinion.
This book was pretty predicable , it was a cat and mouse game, given it was entertaining. I loved Asher , I tolerated Laken.
I loved that was realistic he didn't mope around waiting for Laken, he still did his own thing. Laken took forever to come around, I would of left her alone. the chase wasn't worth it. Laken was ungrateful have time and constantly judging Asher without giving him the time to barely get her name. She annoyed me.
I loved the supporting characters especially Pappy!!
Overall this was a good quick read. Although it was predicable , it was also perfect to heal a emotional book hangover.
Happy Reading

Another fab read by Paisley Walker. Playing with Fire tells the story of Laken who after suffering a terrible tragedy is forced to sell the one thing she wants to keep sacred for her one true love, her virginity. Asher is a wealthy business man with a reputation for the ladies who has been trying to get Laken to notice him for the last two years but she seems immune to him or is she?
I loved the secondary characters in this book their bestfriends, Blakely and Hayden and also Asher's pappy he had me in stitches. This book also had me in tears with another heartbreak around the corner could a relationship survive and will the bonds of friendship be lost forever. Overall a great 5 star read and I'm looking forward to see what Paisley gives us next.

4.5 firey STARS!!!

*Provided for honest review.*

This was a super exciting read! It's got it all - a Mr. Hottie McHot Pants alpha billionaire of a man, a woman determined to make her future bright, and the greatest secondary cast! To be honest - this just may be my shortest review ever. For two reasons: 1 - the blurb for this book tells you everything you'd want to know going in and 2 - I despise spoilers so in order to not soul any beans, there's not really much else to tell you. The author made a terrific decision to write this book with a dual POV! This book did span a number of 2 years and being able to be inside both their heads was absolutely gratifying.

This was a book but I saw it as an onion. Multiple layers. Reasons for every minute detail. Why it spans multiple years, why she even had so much debt she had to sell herself, reasons for the secondary characters and their actions/reactions. When I began peeling the layers, I found these unbreakable connections. And I found my heart-strings being pulled by both, Laken and Asher. I was amazed at how sweet, tender, and caring Asher really was.

"I may not be the ideal price charming, but I was going to try my best to be the one she deserved."

And how Laken was a fighter, was passionate. She was holding on to something so incredibly special to her to give to the man of her dreams.

"I'm a virgin Asher, and you jump from bed to bed. I want the happily ever after with the one man I give myself to on the day I say 'I do,' so don't you dare tell me what I know I want. You will never be it, because let's face it, you're no prince charming."

They seemed toxic for each other with her wanting to keep her virtue in tact and him being with nameless women. But at the same time I found them imperfectly perfect for each other. It was beautiful watching it all unfold! Perfectly executed!

**Note to author - I love, love, love Impractical Jokers and definitely need a friend like Larry! I laughed my ass off reading that part!**

Paisley Walker is a new author to me, but boy can she write a steamy novel that will leave you very hot under the collar. I certainly found myself blushing through parts of the book.
The synopsis was what drew me in to the book. It did kind of remind me of another book I love and so I was very interested in reading this book and hoping it lived up to my expectations.
Asher is the best thing in the story. he's the billionaire playboy. He's used to getting what he wants, that is until he meets Laken and can't work out why she doesn't want anything to do with him.
The reason is Laken is a virgin. She isn't wanting to be a notch in the billionaires bed. She wants the prince charming dream. Laken wants the whole dream and part of that dream involves losing her virginity to the person she loves. That is until Laken gets in trouble and desperately needs money and decides she's no choice but to auction off her virginity.
The build up to Laken selling her virginity and her and Ashers relationship is spread out. That's a lot of of back and forth between the couple and that's down to Laken mostly. She's not happy about Asher being the one who gets her virginity. What she doesn't realise and can't see for quite a lot of time throughout the book is that Asher actually is a really great guy and his intentions are true. He really does like Laken and I wanted her to see tht a lot sooner than she did.
I was really glad to see this story was very different to the other story I love that sounded similar. It was really nothing like it and I'm so glad it wasn't.
The story felt original to me and the steam factor was off the charts. Paisley certainly knows he to write a hot sex scene. She also knows how to create great characters that are smoking hot. I want my own Asher.
The characters were very interesting and their back stories were too.
I loved the whole book and I'm so glad I've found a new author I can enjoy.

Our boy Asher is head honcho, or likes to think he is with his woman, he's dominant, bossy, and sometimes doesn't ask what his woman wants to eat, "we will have two plates of waffles, eggs and bacon," I say not even giving Laken a chance to tell the woman she isn't eating anything." He does it for his woman's own good he thinks she needs protecting, "I doubt that, but you can think that," I roar. There is no way I am leaving her alone after tonight; it's obvious she can't take care of herself." He's honest, but I sometimes think he says what's on his mind just to mess with his girl, "you know all this arguing we do makes me want to push you against that wall and eff you senseless," I growl out." He has a little jealousy problem going on, "I don't give a eff, don't look at her like that. She belongs to me," I hiss, before stepping back." He's not shy of telling his girl what his future dreams are, "I'd love to get you pregnant one day, but that's a long way away. We can do it without a condom? Because, let me tell you that was a first for me, and it felt effing incredible." I enjoyed this book I loved Asher he was my type of man.

The description does a really good job explaining what this book is about. Laken is a college student when we start the story and is working hard to make a good future for herself. From the moment Asher sees her he wants her. But Laken isn't willing to just jump into bed with him because he is good looking and rich. She is looking to save herself for marriage and true love. Tragedy forces her to reconsider. This story takes place over a few years and you can see the growth in both characters. There are some great secondary characters like Blakely and Hayden. I really enjoyed watching everything develop during the story.

Playing with fire is a fitting tittle for this book. Laken a college student who has had her fair share of heartache in her young life. Asher, Billionaire playboy who has it all, but remembers what it took to get where he is. One night by chance he meets Laken the one girl that doesn't seem to want him is the one girl he can't get over.
This books is spread out over a two year peroid. You get both sides of the story and some very quirky best friends inbetween that just enhance the story line so much.
I instantly fell in love with Asher. As the story developed you learn so much more about the man he truly is. Five stars for sure! I would recommend everyone one clicking this story!

SPOILERS AHEAD

This book sat in my cloud for two years. I honestly forgot I had it until I saw it was free and Amazon reminded me I'd purchased it already. Boy do I hope I got it for free then. And oh how I wish I woulda just let it sit unread forever.

This is one of the worst books I've ever read. It pains me to write bad reviews on someone's work but it is what it is. I can't stand the MCs or the secondary characters. Let's start with Laken, our h. The hell kinda name is Laken?? She was sooo frustrating. Her behavior towards the H was baffling. Asher, our H, billionaire manwhore. I didn't enjoy reading descriptive sex between him and OW.

Then, for some nonsensical reason, there's suddenly random drama from one of Asher's exes. The ex wants to kill Laken so her bff Blakely, who's pregnant, jumps in front of the bullet and loses the baby. Then gets mad at Laken because she lost the baby.

Then there's the editing, or lack there of. One minute Laken has green eyes then they're brown. Someone was described as having strawberry blonde hair next it's black. Misspelled words, wrong usage of words, etc.

Just bad!

2 Stars Not for me, just didn't get it! You Are WARNED: Spoilers Ahead

OK, I was so looking forward to this story and what started out with excitement quickly turned to disappointment for me personally. I didn't get Asher, like AT ALL especially the first say almost half of the book..... I couldn't take him sleeping with OW and acting all sex gah gah over them, it was unreal to me how he would go on and on about them like how great and beautiful and the best this and that, really,, it was just too much for me to the point I had to go back and check on who exactly he was going to end up with.... I have to tell you the first half of the book was such a real turnoff for me, not only with him being with OW and describing how great it was and how great they were like describing how they had the "best" p&*^% he has had or tasted, ewwww, etc..... and Laken, ughhhhhh, I disliked her so much that I wasn't sure I could finish this book but what I did love, yes, loved, was Blakely and Hayden's side story. Honestly, I was so intrigued with them that they were what kept me going until the end.

Sorry, I genuinely hate to write a bad review but I didn't get Asher and Laken, she was SO DAMN STUBBORN and FRUSTRATING to me and basically I just didn't get their story! Now, if Hayden and Blakely get their own story in the future, I would definitely want to read it:)

This was my first book by this author and as I always do, I will give her another shot and just because I don't like this book doesn't mean I wouldn't love another one of her books. Everyone has a hiccup, even my favorite go-to authors, so I never discard an author based on one book that I didn't like but others loved. Everyone has their own opinions as well as reading styles or rather reading preferences and that's what makes for interesting people, lol:) Just because I felt this way doesn't mean anyone else will so please don't NOT read because of my own personal opinion because for someone else they may not have a problem with my problem in reading it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

The story of Laken and Asher is exactly what I like to read about. It starts out slow, where he is doing everything he can to get to Laken and she is running as fast as she can away from him. That is until Laken's back is against the wall. With an enormous amount of debt and under threat of jail, her best friend recommends she auction off the one thing men are most likely to pay a lot of money for. What you ask? What else but her virginity.

When the auction begins Laken notices that a man who is old enough to be her father, is bidding for her and she is terrified that he will win. At least, until Asher saves the day and outbids him for what she is offering. On the one hand Laken does not want to pend a night and give up her most precious possession to a man old enough to be her father. On the other hand, Asher, the man she's been running from for a long time now is also someone she wants nothing to do with. Her greatest fear is that she will be nothing more than another notch in his playboy belt.

What Laken doesn't realize is just how much Asher wants to be more than just a roll in the bed with her. Surprisingly, Asher takes care of her debt after he wins her from the auction but does not expect her to follow through with the bargain. The question is, will she or won't she? Have to read the book in order to find out.

The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was that the plot didn't spin out fast enough for me. I like things to progress quickly and that didn't happen in this story. Still, it is my preference and other readers may prefer the slow roll out. Everyone has their own preference! I would highly recommend this to those who like things to progress slower.

Playing With Fire is an enjoyable book with a sexy alpha hero and a strong heroine. There are lots of steamy scenes with a good plot to back it up. I would have given it five stars, but I found the first half of the book a little slow for my tastes. The story is told from both of the main characters points of view which I liked, and both had distinctive 'voices'. I liked the author's writing style, she can definitely pen a good story, so I would read more of her books.

Asher Braxton is gorgeous, extremely rich and has girls throwing themselves at him - but the girl that he has wanted for months and months will have nothing to do with him. Laken is having nothing but bad luck, and when she finds herself with a massive debt she has no idea what to do. Her best friend helps her come up with a rather crazy plan to auction off her most prized asset - her virginity! You can guess who bids in the auction - Asher! Lots of drama and sexy times ensue and the results make for great reading.

There are some fantastic characters in the book. Asher and Laken are both great, but for me Pappy steals the show - I loved him! Asher is a real alpha male and a total playboy, but behind the flashy exterior he has such a soft heart. Laken is a strong woman, she works hard and has values she is determined to stand by, but circumstances force her to make a drastic decision. The chemistry between the two of them is sizzling, they make a great couple. Nothing is straight forward for them though, they have obstacles to overcome. Playing With Fire gets four out of five stars.

Playing with Fire is a sexy 4 star read. I will admit that I had some trouble getting into the story at first because of Asher’s behavior, which made him seem like he had no redeeming qualities. I am glad I stuck with this one because it turns out there is much more than the author reveals in the beginning. The synopsis doesn’t really give a good preview of what the story was about. For those that are worried that this story is going to jump right into a virgin auction, fear not, there is a lot of build up and background to this.

Laken is working hard to finish her master’s degree when she meets Asher Braxton. Even before she realizes who he is, she is determined to avoid him, and all men, as she focuses on school. Once she realizes Asher is a playboy who is never with any woman long, she is even more determined to avoid him. I liked Laken’s character. She has had a lot adversity in her life, and she is forced to deal with even more as the story progresses.

There is a lot of great chemistry between Laken and Asher through out the book and the sex between them is very steamy. Overall, this is a really good story, but the timeline threw me off. There were jumps in time, and some didn’t make sense to me. I was reading an unedited copy, so this issue may have been dealt with in the editing process. It was also not enough to make me dislike the book.

OH what a nice treat this was!
This book was like eating a fine chocolate, you have a great exterior but once you bite into it you are rewarded with the most exquisite filling and you try to make it last but sadly all good things come to an end.
Well that's how this book was for me.
I was expecting the same story of a Billionaire chasing the virginal character but OH I got quite a nice surprise. As I read on and got deeper into the story I just couldn't put the book down, didn't want to finish but was desperate to know how things would pan out.
The Story evolves around Laken and Asher or "Hottie McHot Pants" as he is known from the start of the book. Their first encounter is fast and not your usual instant attraction, well at least not for Laken, but fate keeps throwing the two of them together and soon they invade each others thoughts. However there are too many complications and things that seem but aren't which prevent them from really explore the feelings. Laken has to make a bold and important decision to pay a hefty debt, which places a window of opportunity for Asher to make his move, and from this point forward the story takes a heated turn.
A hot and romantic story, full of charm and great dialogues, and the best part, ITS A STANDALONE!

Well done Author Paisley Walker this was a truly enjoyable book!

Laken Thompson wants to finish college and get her degree. She has no time for relationships and is only looking for her Prince Charming.

Asher Braxton is a man used to getting what he wants, but is baffled and intrigued when Laken doesn’t want him.

After two years of Asher going after Laken, he finally gets her, but at what cost?

Playing with Fire was a good read. It grabs your attention and made you want to read more. I had trouble liking Laken though. To me she needed a really bad attitude adjustment. There is a difference between putting out there that you’re not interested and being a bitch about it.

And the ending OMG, everybody laid blame where it should not have been, and when you jump in front of a moving bullet, you should not blame the person you jump in front of said bullet for. They didn’t ask you to do it. I may sound like an ass for saying that, but at the same time its true.

Now to the good parts, the chemistry between Asher and Laken was awesome and I was a little sad it took them so long to be together. The friendship between Laken and Blakely have a great friendship. The characters are likeable, even Laken (when she isn’t arguing with Asher).

Good Read.

First of all , the names Laken and Asher rock my socks!
Laken is a good girl who works hard at school and prood is in the pudding as the saying goes. She's gone through a few hardships and has experienced heartbreaking   loss  and then to add to it she inherits a huge amount of debt just to add insult to injury.
She has hit rock bottom and decides to take her friend , Blakely's advice and auctions off her virtue!

Asher aka Mr Hottie McHotpants is delicious and all alpha and he wants Laken , badly.
He's persistent yet patient,I'll give him that much. After 2 years of pursuing her he gets  the chance to be her knight in shining armour and saves her virtue in more ways than one.
Asher sees alot of himself in Laken in certain aspects and he appreciates that she's not interested in him for his status.

I enjoyed being able to experience things through both Asher and Laken,to feel what they feel and experience their drama, lows and highs.
Asher is serious kryptonite and will have you and your best lace knickers(panties)in a ★★★★★ melted mess

Horrible writing!

This book needed an editor, a researcher and a steady build of suspense then some more time to resolution. It felt like I was reading a report. This happen then this happen all within in a few pages of each other. I don't like to give bad reviews but seriously this was bad. The author said 'her ass 'giggled' pretty sure she meant jiggled I mean my ass has never laughs when I walk away. Laken also 'immereged' herself in a report .. sure you didn't mean 'immersed'? This was just bad don't bother with this one and the reason she HAS to sell her virginity to the highest bidder isn't even plausible! Don't ... just Don't. The author thanks her editor in her acknowledgements at the end of the book and it makes me wonder was this worse before the editor got out her red pen? I just had high hopes and the premise was good but it needed more fleshing out of the characters and the storyline to be a book any well read and educated adult would want to read. This is by far the worse review I have ever given and while it pains me because I know the author put her time into this book it just wasn't ready for publishing to the public yet.

☆☆☆☆ 4 Hooked Stars ☆☆☆☆

Laken is a college student whose only focused on graduating. That is until she meets Asher Braxton, the sexy billionaire CEO who shocks her world. Laken refuses to give into Asher's advances, which leads to 2 long years of him perusing her. It isn't until she finally succumbs to the mountain of debt that her parents accumulated and decides to auction off her virginity, the the relationship between them really heats up. But can they overcome all the obstacles in their way??

Well, hot damn. Asher is probably the best book boyfriend ever right? I mean he chases after Laken for over 2 years, plus he's dreamy and rich, and has a huge d..k... lol!! But honestly, this book is really an amazing read. I mean the dueling POVs, the story arc, the drama, the secondary characters, the emotions... it's all here. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I wish some points had moved a little faster, but I understand the arc of the story. This is certainly a MUST READ and I cannot wait for Blakely's story!

This is the first book from this author that I have read. I will say that it was a very good read. I am always looking for new authors to read and really enjoyed this one.

The story of Laken and Asher was a build up. They had a connection from the first meeting in a Starbucks. Laken just wanted to finish school. She was worried about men or relationships. Asher is the type of man that gets what he wants. Things go from bad to worse for Laken. She is looking for her Prince charming. Little does she know, it's Asher. He doesn't give up for 2 yrs. They just have this amazing connection. Blakely, Laken's BFF is hilarious.

I don't want to give much of the story line away, but you have Laken fighting her feelings and doing something incredibly stupid. Asher saves her and begs for a chance. You get a little bit of the story of Hayden and Blakley too.

Laken works hard at her job and putting herself through school. When she inherits a mountain of debt, she is overwhelmed. She decides the only thing she can do is sell her virginity to the highest bidder.
Asher has wanted Laken from the moment he laid eyes on her. She refuses to have anything to do with him. He has been killing time with other women while waiting for her to change her mind. He finds out about the debt she is in and can't believe what she has decided to do.
Asher is a bad boy. He is the guy you were warned about. The fact Laken doesn't want to date him is no surprise. Yet we all hope to have a wild night with a bad boy at least once. I enjoyed the story and I think you will too.

Laken is trying to finish college and isn't interested in settling for "Mr. Right Now", she wants "The One". But when she needs cash she decides to auction off the one thing that is most precious to her, her virginity.
Asher has had his eye on Laken for a few years and cannot figure out why she will not give him a chance.
At the auction, Laken hears the one voice bidding for her that she was hoping NOT to hear, Asher.
What happens when they are put together under these circumstances? Could Asher be the one she was looking for or is it all just passing time for him?
You need to read the book to get that answer! You won't regret it, this book is steamy!!

Playing with Fire by Paisley Walker is the first book I have read by her and I was pleasantly surprised by the story line. Asher is a man who always gets what he wants, that is until he meets Asher. She is not so willing to succumb to his charm or at least that what she wants him to believe. I completely fell for Asher because is his one hot alpha male. This book is told from the main characters point of view, which is something I really enjoyed. I loved when Asher was talking because I was able to get into his head. I would recommend this book and this author. I look forward to reading more from her.

I received this for an honest review.. I have to say that this was a very enjoyable book. Filled with lots of hot sexiness and a really awesome female lead who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it.. I really enjoyed Laken's character. This book is definitely named very well. This book is a definite must read.
For me this is the first one with this author and I have to say it wont be my last. I thought it was written very well for a newer author and I just cant wait to see what comes next for this author..

I really dislike giving any book a review of less than three. I'm giving it 2 because I feel it had potential. I'm finding this plot way too face paced for me...especially when they both mention he's been after her for two years!?!? I would have though 6 months, maybe a year? But at the begining of the book shes finishing her last finals and two years later she is just graduating? Not to mention how he is "obsessed" with her but sleeps with MULTIPLE women throughout this "two year" chase. So confused, DNF at 50%.

I wanted to like this book but just didn't. The first half was hard to read because Asher was screwing other women and flaunting it in Laken's face because she turns him down. I honestly just skimmed over those chapters and didn't read them fully. Once they were together it was ok for a few chapters then it all kinda fell apart again for me towards the end. I'm not sure if I will read the next one about the BFF Blakely or not.
