Their other works include Riverwitch and The Wind City, both shortlisted for Sir Julius Vogel Awards. Rem’s short fiction appears in several places including Baffling Magazine, Capricious Magazine and two of the Year’s Best Aotearoa New Zealand Science Fiction & Fantasy anthologies. Rem’s probably a changeling, but you’re stuck with them now. The coffee here is just too good.

“Wolfpack” is the second book in the “Orfeus Tales” duology by Rem Wigmore. I highly suggest reading “Foxhunt” the first novel, before this one, as it picks up right where “Foxhunt” leaves off.
For Orfeus she now has to deal with being Leader of the Order of the Vengeful Wild. It was not a decision she made freely. Luga basically forced her hand to become Leader and it left a division between her and Wolf, who she really needed for support and loyalty.
Orfeus still finds that she is not the type of Leader that Luga was. She will still go out with members of the Wild to stop predators. But she want’s to bring change to make the future world better, but it’s not always easy. The adjustment of Leader weighs on her as she still joins the Wilds when there’s issues to be handled. Wolf is not accepting of her decisions.
Orfeus, Tai, Velvet Worm, Juana, Shark and Ocelot have a job to do in the town of Opalescent. At one time the Opal’s Own was a much better structure, but now it was a charming wayhouse. But it became a place of unspeakable torture for travelers and locals. There team will have to face an evil man that practiced ancient bigotry. As Madam Faustine is grateful for Orfeus’ help, she offers ways to pay the debt, but what’s more important the Wild would always be welcome in Opalescent.
As Wolf’s and Orfeus’ relationship has grown there’s still a secret that needs to be told. Orfeus want’s to make a gift to Wolf of the Cloud Forest, but once again, she will face dilemmas that once again could push their world to destruction.
Rem Wigmore brings into the light a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, solar punk, novel that expands from the first novel “Foxhunt”. I only mentioned some instances, but there is so much more to this expertly written novel. The author expands on each character and the diversity that they live with day to day. There are a variety of intense emotions and the story is fantastically told. “Wolfpack” sends the message on healing and caring for each other and keeping the lines of communication open. But most of all it’s about getting along regardless of diversity and the need to keep the world green, now and for the future. The romance and loving words that come through this novel give hope for a beautiful future for all, especially Orfeus and Wolf.
Once again there is an abundance of former characters that make this novel shine and new characters: Jean, Arcon, Frankie and so many more.
Once again, I highly suggest reading “Foxhunt” the first novel and then “Wolfpack”. If at all possible read them consecutively. It will really aid in understanding the plight of those that are looking for ways of conservation and making their future better. I am sure “Foxhunt” and “Wolfpack” will be a series I will revisit again.
