He should know better. She’s the coach’s daughter.
Lane Maxwell has one season left to prove he’s more than the reputation that followed him from his last school. Transferring to Great Lakes U wasn’t a fresh start—it was his last shot at keeping his NHL dream alive.
Cora Banks has built her life on being the one everyone can count on. Between classes, extra research projects, and doing whatever the Great Lakes U hockey team needs behind the scenes, she keeps everything moving—even when it means there’s nothing left for herself.
She’s always known the don’t get involved with hockey players. Not when your dad is the coach. But Lane keeps showing up… on the ice and behind the scenes. The more time they spend around each other, the harder it is to ignore what’s between them.
Until one reckless moment changes everything.
Suddenly, Lane is back in the same spotlight. Same accusations. Same assumptions. Different college.
Only this time, Cora knows the truth—and how much it will cost to prove it.
WHAT WE KNEW THEN is a college hockey romance with forbidden chemistry, a hero with everything to lose, and consequences neither of them can outrun.
As a fellow Michigander, when I seen this book was based in Michigan- I just had to read it, plus hockey?? Yum!
Lane is such a lovable character, seriously tbere wasn’t a moment when I wasn’t rooting for him. I just wanted to hug him and never let go.
Cora battling with the “perfect girl” label she put on herself was refreshing to read about, I feel like it’s not talking about a lot. The pressure, needing to be perfect! I loved watching how Lane handled her when she was having her migraines or needed to blow off steam.
The banter was 10/10. The spice was hot, and — the way he makes her use her words…
They’re made for each other and I cannot wait to read the next book!!
Y’all, I fell in love with this book from the very beginning and it never let me go. Lane and Cora had me completely hooked, and I was rooting for them from page one.
This is hands down one of my top sports romances and I loved it so much. The chemistry, the angst, the swoony moments, the secret relationship vibes… it all just worked.
And Lane? Protect him at all costs. 🥺
This was my first book by Rachel LaBerge, but she is officially an auto-buy author for me now because I already need more of her books immediately.
If you love sports romance, add this one to your TBR ASAP. 🏒✨
"Maybe it was trusting what we knew then... and choosing it anyway."
🚨⚠️POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD…STOP NOW⚠️🚨 - - - - First of all... I have to say how excited I am that this was my first ever ARC. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better book or experience.
Right from the first chapter, I was HOOKED. The humor immediately pulled me in, and Lane's internal monologue had me laughing more than once. The dialogue throughout the whole book felt natural and realistic, and I loved that Rachel didn't sugarcoat things. The swearing, the awkward moments, the emotions... all of it… it made these characters feel like actual people instead of perfect fictional ones.
Yes, parts of the story were a little predictable, but honestly, I didn't mind. It was the kind of predictability that honestly just felt right. I wanted to watch these two figure things out, and the journey was worth it.
One of my favorite parts of this book was just how relatable the characters were. Cora's migraines, the pressure she puts on herself, and constantly feeling like she has to hold everything together and “check the boxes” hit home. Lane's story was even heavier… touching on food insecurity, abuse, an unstable home life, and trying to escape a reputation that wasn't entirely his fault (at all). Those struggles felt incredibly real, and they gave both characters so much depth, and made them that much more relatable.
I loved the message about second chances. What We Knew Then reminds you that there is almost always more to someone's story than what you see on the surface. Sometimes people just need someone willing to listen and see them, instead of making assumptions, and I think that was one of my favorite takeaways from the entire book.
Lane completely won me over. More than anything, I loved how he noticed the little things about Cora. He didn't just admire how beautiful she was. He admired her determination, her intelligence, her work ethic, and how fiercely she cared about the people around her. I think that's every reader's dream honestly... finding someone who truly sees you for who you are.
And can we talk about the chemistry for a second? 🔥🥵 The intimate scenes were *chef's kiss.* They were emotional, so beautifully written, incredibly hot, and never felt cringey or overdone. They weren't just there to be spicy. Every scene built trust, vulnerability, and connection between them, which made them feel so much more meaningful. Also… the piercing…UGGGGHHHHHHHH👀🤤
There were quite a few moments that genuinely made me emotional. Watching both Lane and Cora spiral in different ways while still trying to support each other made them feel incredibly human. By the end, I was definitely tearing up.
As someone from Michigan, all of the little Michigan references were such a fun bonus and made the story feel even more personal. “October in Michigan has a way of sinking into your bones.” <—— another of my favorite quotes.
Overall, this was such a heartfelt college hockey romance with humor, relatable characters, emotional growth, and incredible chemistry. It truly exceeded my expectations, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better first ARC experience. I am incredibly grateful that Rachel entrusted me with being one of her ARC readers.
I’ll absolutely be picking up whatever Rachel Laberge writes next, and I would TOTALLY read books from Oliver's or Brinn's perspectives in a heartbeat.
I received this as an ARC reader and it’s my second ARC opportunity for one of Rachel’s books. I’m so grateful each time to be chosen because I know when reading one of her books I won’t be able to put it down. I can confirm that I read this in under 24 hours and my thoughts on her writing stand firm.
I’m giving What We Knew Then 4 stars on Goodreads but I think if I could it would be more of a 3.5 just because at times toward the end it did feel slightly rushed. I wanted a little bit more in the aftermath of the fallout between the two main characters but overall the book was good. The main characters were the epitome of what I wanted them to be in a forbidden coach’s daughter x teammate trope. Lane is very misunderstood and Rachel did a really good job of showing us as readers his softer side towards Cora and his new teammates. Cora’s story line did really infuriate me when she did what she did towards the end but Rachel wrapped it up nicely for us after the fact. I plan to continue with the Great Lakes U series because I’m a sucker for a hockey romance so I really do look forward to more. I’m just hoping to not feel as rushed at the ending of those.
I do feel like I wish I could’ve connected to Cora a bit more. I’m not sure if it was the bit with the migraines or the perfectionism aspect but there was just a disconnect between her and I. I will give it to her though for night 1 of meeting Lane; that to me was more of who I wanted Cora to be. A badass, no f’s given, do what feels right for you in the moment main female character. She would show aspects of that personality when it came to the loser ex Freddy but then when the meltdown happened later in the book she lost it and it just seemed a bit like a disconnect between the two personalities. I don’t expect to connect to every character and I’m fine when I don’t so overall it’s something I can look past.
As an ARC reader we sometimes have to remember that things can be added or taken away prior to release of the book. I trust Rachel’s team to fix a few minor mistakes that I noticed while reading and will suggest this book on my social media pages to other hockey romance fans because in truth Rachel’s writing deserves it.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE INSTANT CHEMISTRY These characters have insane instant chemistry, the damsel in stress start … please *fans self*
I loved the storyline, Lane and Cora has an amazing dynamic. Coaches daughter, breaking free from the good girl stigma. And Lane… the depth of his character was amazing to follow, it’s hard to not love him. It started off a little fast like a good ole draw you in meet cute and it doesn’t slow down. I like the spacing and how as you progress more in depth details for both main characters backstory come to light and you get those “ah… that makes sense now” moments. The falling out with a coach that took a chance on him, it feels realistic. The bond the players share both on and off the ice was displayed really well, not overly attached but like a solid team anyone would want to be a part of I hope we get to see more of this.
I had a really hard time setting this book down for any period of time.
This story was more than a meet cute / love story first sight between two people we knew wouldn’t be able to stay away from each other, each character was filled with their own issues both physically and mentally and seeing them grow and trust one another while they slowly start to share the deepest parts of themselves.
Personally I love that Lane didn’t instantly forgive Cora for the car and police issue, Becuase no person would be able to in that moment and it made it … more. The flashes of “I almost called “ I felt this too, in my heart because it’s those feelings that are so realistic and believe.
Meeting Leo and Troy and getting bits and pieces of them here and there makes me optimistic, and I’m going out on a whim here in assuming that Leo and Brinn could be the main couple of book two.
The character development of side characters was enough that readers like myself are going to be thrilled to see if we get more books but could also just be a really great solo story.
Great story, great pace, Rachel always gives us what we need 💜💜
First of all, I’ve never actually read about an FMC that is going through the same medical issues I am. I also suffer with chronic, debilitating migraines that no one can find the reasoning for. I’ve learned to just cope with it as well for the past 14yrs. So it’s refreshing to read about someone that also deals with this.
Lane, sweet baby Lane! Who wouldn’t want a completely obsessed brooding hockey player to be obsessed with you since the moment he meets you? But it turns out he is down bad for his new coach’s daughter, the one who is absolutely supposed to be off limits to all hockey players. He tries to keep his distance and stay away, but that only proves to be difficult. Cora, who is the perfect student, always has to be in control and is always 10 steps ahead, doesn’t account for Lane. He is the only thing she cannot control and seems to be breaking rules for.
Lane’s story is so traumatic and emotional. You really see the pressure he puts on himself. Cora is similar to Lane, in the way she puts all this pressure on herself to be perfect and never wanting her condition to be seen as a crutch. I enjoyed that they worked through these issues together.
Only thing I didn’t like was what Cora did while Lane was driving, knowing what he went through and got tight of a leash he was on. I appreciate that she helped make it better and ultimately was for the best in the long run, but I was still very much upset that she did what she did.
Fav quotes: “BETTER NOT BITTER”
“Fuck it. I don’t want to fight you anymore, Cora. Unless I’m fighting for you.”
Wow wow wow wow. This was beautiful. This was everything i love in a hockey romance. We had coaches daughter. We had banter. We had some sneaking around. Just EVERYTHING 😛
Lane started off as a hard headed broody hockey player but boy did this man melt like BUTTER😭😭 I loved his character. I loved how he didnt give up. His past came rearing back when he has the same thing happen and my heart was down in my ass. CAUSE MY GOSH. He truly was such a sweet soul and didnt deserve all the backlash from his past. But he deserved Cora in his life 100%🥹 also....the unexpected ✨️piercings✨️?! I FOLDED.
Cora. Cora Cora Cora. Honestly a baddie. The way she knew who Lane was instantly but decided to shoot her shot?😉 girly had me rooting from here. She was smart and it was HOT. As a girl who suffers from bad migraines time to time I wanted to cry with her. They can be so debilitating but she was a tough ass bitch💅 I loved her love for Lane. It was so easy and so sweet, even with the unexpected happening and needing time to heal she was so forgiving of his past. It truly made me love her and her true colors 🥹
These two were so adorable together, they just worked out everything so perfectly to make sure their life was set up so they both were happy and i admired that. Both were equals and Cora....I'm still proud of you being a boss🧎🏼♀️
“Fuck it. I don’t want to fight you anymore, Cora. Unless I’m fighting for you.”
“You kiss me like I’m worth saving. It’s not something I’m used to feeling.”

I received an advance reader copy of this book and am delighted to share my review.
Lane transfers to Great Lakes U for one final chance to prove himself and make it to the NHL. Cora Banks has always lived her life by staying organized, responsible, and constantly on the go. She's also had one rule drilled into her by her father, the hockey coach: don't date his players.
After Cora's long-term boyfriend breaks up with her, she finds herself at a bar where she meets Lane. Knowing exactly who he is, she keeps her identity a secret, and the two share one unforgettable, steamy night. Everything changes when Lane discovers that Cora is the coach's daughter. Determined to avoid crossing any lines, he tries to keep his distance. But when Coach recommends Lane as the subject of Cora's research project, they're forced to spend more time together, making it nearly impossible to ignore their growing feelings.
As their relationship deepens, Lane opens up about the events that led to his dismissal from his previous hockey team. At the same time, Cora lands herself in a downward spiral unintentionally pulling Lane back into the same situation that forced him to question everything he's worked so hard for—putting his NHL dreams at risk.
Both Lane and Cora face personal challenges throughout the story, learning to confront their pasts while questioning whether love alone is enough to overcome the obstacles in their way. I loved every bit of this book and can't wait to see what's next for the Great Lakes U hockey team!
I feel like only one thing will explain my thoughts for this book properly haha. I don’t really like hockey romance…but when Rachel writes it? I will eat👏🏻 it👏🏻 up👏🏻 I REALLY loved this one!
It’s so easy to get lost in Rachel’s books, and this one was no different. I love a good character who carries the weight of the world on their shoulders, and when both Cora and Lane were that kind of character? The way they could see right through each other’s walls, as if they weren’t even there, had me melting into a puddle🥹 their stolen moments together, their secret looks, the way they could immediately feel when the other was close? Stellar, no notes, I need more of them like I need air🤭
And to make it even better, Rachel hits us with a chronic migraine rep that made me feel *seen*. I can always rely on her for that, her books have the best representation that I always turn to whenever I feel a little alone in the suffering.
A huge thank you to Rachel for sending me a digital arc in exchange for my honest review! You always keep my kindle stocked with the best books🫶🏻🫶🏻

Lane transfers from Ohio to Great Lakes U in Michigan. He didn’t expect that his hookup, Coralee, would be the coach’s daughter. He can’t afford any more screw ups. He needs to stay away from Cora as far as possible. But when he helps her with her research, sparks are still there and their attraction isn’t fizzling out anytime soon.
Theres a sweetness about Lane and Cora. Both fighting their own battles. The perceived bad boy who is focusing on his hockey career and the good girl with the 4.0 gpa. Both of them are so hard on themselves. Trying to prove to other people that they are enough and they have everything handled.
Lane’s background has him wanting to play it safe now, but being with Cora is anything but that. I love their relationship. Cora was there for him in the end and helped him even though he didn’t want her too. When you love someone, you do whatever it takes to help them even if they don’t want or ask for it.
I feel for Cora for her need to be perfect. I think a lot of have felt like that at one point or another. I don’t know much about migraines, but I can’t believe it can get that bad. I just want to give Cora a hug!
This story is heartfelt and emotional. Learning that sometimes doing something for others with the best intentions isn’t always what’s best for yourself. Or you can have a nice balance of work and play. Leaning heavily on one side of it can be terrible.
-Coach’s Daughter -Found Family -One Night Stand -Dislike to love -Forced Proximity
So, this is my first book I have ever read of Rachel’s and wow !!! Brb while I go binge read the rest of them. If you want a book with obvious attraction with push and pull, read this immediately. If you want a book that has tension and spice, read this immediately. I mean it when I say I could not put this one down.
So my heart completely breaks for Lane. His past is extremely sad and hearing the trauma he had to endure is so heartbreaking. No kid deserves to go through what he did but I’m go glad he had the Knight family. He struggles with his past in this book so much so that it starts to affect his future until Coach Banks whips him into shape. Lane is loyal at fault and will do anything he can to protect others even if it is at the cost of his own future.
Coralee is a type A, do it by the books, I don’t break rules kind of girl. She is caught off guard when Land comes into her life and gives her the best one night stand of her life. Truth be known she knows who he is and doesn’t say a word. Turns out what she falls she falls hard and will stop at nothing to go to bat for Lane. It breaks my heart that she deals with migraines, but I’m thankful lane is there to help care for her.
Thank you so much to Rachel and the agency for allowing me to read this advanced readers copy for an honest review. I would highly recommend reading this book!
This was my first ARC and I enjoyed it immensely. This was also my first book by Rachel. I loved every minute of it and look forward to finding and reading more of her books. 5 ⭐️ and a 2 🌶️ I myself am a Midwesterner and I love that I can connect in that way with any book that’s includes us. We like feeling seen :) The chemistry between Lane and Cora was powerful. Him being on a new team and her the coaches daughter!! 🥵 The amount of hockey talk was perfect and easy to understand even if you’re not a fan of hockey. I am a fan so the details of the games and plays were making it easy for me to imagine the game in my mind while I read. I even teared up a few times towards the last quarter of the book. Things just hit me in the feels that I resonate with. The trigger warning at the start of the book was a nice touch to help prepare me/other readers. I personally think it could have used a little more spice but given the plot I can understand why it wasn’t stronger. Maybe in book 2 there will be more?! I also really enjoyed getting to know of the other players/characters of the book. It was so wholesome to read about how close they all were and how they looked out for each other. I’d recommend this to anyone who’s looking into adventuring into the spicy romance books as I feel this is a great one to ease into. If an audiobook becomes available, I’d totally listen to it.
I have been reading Rachel LaBarge for a while and I can never get enough of her books. I'm always drawn in from the first page and this new series is starting out just like the others. I'm loving this Great Lakes U College Series and I can't wait to see what Rachel has in store next. Lane & Cora were an absolute delight getting to know. This book had me laughing, swooning, smiling like crazy, a little emotional, and then I was left with a wonderful ending.
Lane is new to this hockey team and has some challenges getting used to being part of the team and getting out of his own head. Cora is an over achiever and is always putting everything else before herself. These two find a friendship through these challenging times and of course as they get to know each other more things start to change. But there's only one problem..she's the coach's daughter.
This book will take you on quite a ride and I loved every minute of it. Lane is such a sweet guy and I loved how attentive he was to Cora. He had me swooning hard a few times. Cora is the girl next door sweet so you can't help but fall in love with her. The teammates were also great characters and I loved how a few really stepped up to support Lane. If you love hockey romance and college romance stories then this book will be right up your alley. I HIGHLY recommend this book and all of the other books Rachel LeBarge has written.
Thank you Rachel LaBarge for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
This was my first book from the author, but it certainly won’t be the last! As a Midwesterner myself, I love a book that takes place here, though I wish there was a real Michigan college team called the Otters 😂
I felt all the emotions while reading; Rachel knows how to write a story that tugs at your heartstrings! I found the characters lovable and also relatable, especially Cora. (Hands up if you’re also a recovering people pleaser with control issues!) Though I wish we had a bit more resolution with her personal storyline, I love the way she fought for Lane without betraying his trust. The entire cast of characters were fun and I can’t wait to get to know them more as the series expands.
Another thing that I really loved, though not necessarily a main plot point, was the leadership of the Great Lakes U hockey team + also Lane’s previous coach. Who knows if this is how hockey is really run 🤷🏻♀️ but the ins and outs of the way Rachel wrote about it made me feel like every team should be this way! The players making their schedule, the team camaraderie and traditions before and during the season, the philosophies and ownership the coaches instilled…I was impressed!
I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a hockey romance with great spice, a fun cast of characters, and lots of touching moments of growth and found family.
Cora and Lane first meet at a bar. They hit it off and decide to take it back to his place👀. The chemistry between these two is 🔥🥵, but after their one night stand, Lane learns that Cora is actually his coach’s daughter😬. Yeah… he was not impressed with that bit of information. Determined to make his last year at this new school count, he tries to stay away from Cora, but working together proves harder than he thought… literally 😂.
My heart truly broke for Lane. Learning about his childhood and the trauma he’s endured was just terrible😭. He struggles a lot with his past throughout this book, but seeing him finally start to let some of it go was so rewarding.
Cora is a good girl. She doesn’t party, she gets perfect grades, never turns in assignments late, and her father’s biggest rule is no dating hockey players. Cora doesn’t break the rules… or so she thought👀👀. Lane comes into her life, and after a memorable one night stand, she can’t seem to stop thinking about him.
I love how they both support and take care of each other. They really are such a great couple, and I’m so happy that Lane finally realizes he deserves love just as much as anyone else❤️.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I’ll be honest, I have no idea who the next one is about, but I’m excited all the same🙃
This is the first book I have read by Rachel LaBerge and I cannot wait to read more!
Tropes Dislike to Lovers Coach’s Daughter Mental Health/Migraine Rep Spicy Secret Relationship Forced Proximity Found Family
When Cora (Lee) and Lane first meet there is instant sparks and insane chemistry but what Lane doesn’t know is “Lee” is his new hockey coach’s daughter. After their first *spicy* night they are forced to work together, and they find out that they can’t seem to stay away from one another.
I fell in love with both Cora and Lane while reading this book. Both of the characters are working through heavy struggles. Cora is an extremely type A good girl, focused on her 4.0 GPA, attempting to avoid her inevitable burnout, and battling chronic migraines. Lane is deemed a “bad boy” due to an incident at his old school, feels he lost the only family he ever had and this new team is his only shot to make anything of himself.
I love the way Cora and Lane continue to show up for each other, their chemistry, the perfect combination of sweetness and spice, and the fact they are both willing to risk it all for each other makes them a favorite couple of mine.
Also I am truly hoping we get a sequel with Leo as an MMC 👀
I absolutely loved this hockey romance. I was hooked from the very beginning with two strangers meeting and having this fiery, unforgettable fling, only for him to find out that she’s the coach’s daughter and that everything between them has to stay a secret.
I also really loved the depth of his character. He went through something incredibly traumatic, and seeing how much pressure he put on himself to perform because of it made him so easy to root for. The reveal about why he transferred schools was definitely emotional. I will say that particular plot twist felt a little familiar because I recently read another hockey romance with a similar storyline, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this book at all. It still felt unique and was written in its own special way.
And can we talk about the peaches and the peach rings? It was such a cute, memorable detail that made me love their relationship even more. The romance itself was perfectly paced, nothing felt rushed and nothing dragged on for too long. Watching their relationship develop was so much fun, and I was smiling through so many of their moments together.
This was such a fun, swoony hockey romance and definitely one of my favorites.
After getting kicked off his college hockey team with one year of eligibility left, Lane Maxwell has one season to prove he is ready for the NHL. With this last shot at keeping his dreams alive he knows he needs to take this fresh start and stay out of trouble. Cora Banks is an overachiever that everyone in her life counts on. Being the hockey coaches daughter she is always helping behind the scenes and knows her dad’s number one rule: don’t get involved with hockey players. When Cora meets Lane at a bar before the season starts, sparks fly. He doesn’t know who she is and she keeps it that way for one night together. However, as expected that blows up in her face when she comes face to face with Lane in her dad’s office. The more time he hey spend together the harder it is to ignore their connection.
I really enjoyed this book. Cora suffers from Aural migraines and as someone who suffers from these the representation and explanation of how debilitating these are was refreshing to read. Most migraine descriptions in books are either glossed over or quickly over. Lane is such a great MMC, definitely misunderstood with a heartbreaking background.
I had the opportunity to read What We Knew Then a bit early, and I'm so happy I signed up too. This book had some of my favorite tropes. I will say I was so nervous about the secret relationship, but the sneaking around was still very cute. I really underestimated Lane and thought he was going to be this hot-headed hockey player, but he surprised me and was actually thoughtful and caring. Despite all the hardships he faced with his parents and the accident, he never gave up. Coralee was an amazing character as well. She is very relatable, and I can see the need to perfect all the time. I am glad she had Lane to help her through school and life when things got a bit too much. The flow and pace were medium, not too fast or slow, and I enjoyed the Dual POV; it fit well with the story. The spice was 5/5; those first few chapters had me hooked alone. Cora and Lane are definitely going to be college sweethearts, and I am excited to see if they get mentioned later in the series. The epilogue was good and was very sweet.

I went into this book without reading the blurb because I wanted to be surprised. Boy was I surprised!! There are so many twists and turns in here that you never know what is going to happen next, what emotion is going to be tugged or if you will be holding your breath.
To say this book starts us off at Great Lakes U with so much to make book two be even better is going to be a daunting go task.
Lane, where to start with our troubled MMC? He had such a dark crappy childhood and what he went through and kept to himself? Can you just say grumpy MMC to a T is his trope.
Coralee is our troubled “good girl” who has a chronic illness that no doctor can figure out. I am a migraine sufferer with her and I am with her in the doctors cannot find the cause. She is drawn to Lane and wants to help him but she also wants to break the rules with him.
This book was a great entry into Great Lakes U and I cannot wait to see who is next.
Thank you Rachel for giving me an early copy of this book and letting me review it early.
This book right here took my breath away. I have never been one for long reviews, but this one. Oh my stars was it good. The plot was there from the beginning to the end. The MMC and FMC are very well thought out, and they certainly take your heart and run with it. In many ways this book was so relatable. I related to Cora more than I would care to admit. She is the overachiever and the one everyone believes could do no wrong. that was me in high school, and it's still somewhat true to this day. Lane, gahhhh this man is slowly making his way into my stop ten book boyfriends. The way he cares so much for Cora has me swooning. His past had my heart breaking in two. Im so glad it ended the way it did. Bringing everything full circle. I rated this book a 5/5 because it truly deserved it. The spice was there but so was the plot. That is an huge thing I look for in dark romance. Yes I love spice but the plot has to be there.
I received this as an ARC read. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK NOW!!!!
There’s not much I love more than a broody man with a complicated past, and Lane did not disappoint. I’m obsessed with how fiercely protective he is of the people he loves, even when it means sacrificing his own dreams. His resilience and determination to rise from the ashes are truly admirable. More than once while reading, I just wanted to hug him and remind him that he deserves good things, too.
Cora was an incredibly relatable character, especially as someone who constantly feels the need to stay in control. She’s the kind of person who never wants to show weakness or ask for help, even when she’s struggling. I loved how honest and realistic her journey felt, and how it showed that sometimes you have to fall apart before you can learn that it’s okay not to have everything together. I also loved the way she continually chose to show up for Lane, especially when it wasn’t easy. She’s definitely become one of my favorite FMCs.
I relate so hard to Cora with her “good girl syndrome” i never thought of a label for that before i just always felt like i couldn’t let anyone down just like her.. i feel a piece of me has been seen and healed.
coach’s daughter on a hockey team gets me everytime. Immediately i’m like, this isn’t going to end well but i always root for them anyway 🤭
their dynamic of banter and teasing is so cute i love them together. there’s this energy of safe and protectiveness that makes everything better between them. the way they both never give up on one another and always show up no matter what.
down to my core could visualize every part of this book. i ate it up and it needs to be a movie 🎥
“you are worthy of good things to happen to you.”
🏒coach’s daughter 🏒mental health rep 🏒forced proximity 🏒found family 🏒secret relationship 🏒hockey romance
I absolutely loved Lane and Cora’s story. From the first moment they locked eyes, I was hooked. The secret identity turned into secret moments was so good!
Cora is a people pleaser that is trying to keep everything together for everyone around her. She is so smart but spreading herself thin and hiding behind her planner but no one sees it until him.
Lane is trying to start over as a senior. His entire life changed with one choice and it almost changes again with the same choice but different people. He loves so hard but does not believe he deserves it. He is so broody out of fear of being vulnerable and taking up too much space.
This story is an emotional rollercoaster but I loved every minute of this story. I just wanted to keep reading to know the secrets. They love so big and I cannot recommend this book enough!!
I absolutely love hockey romance stories and the tropes in this one were some of my favorites from forbidden romance to the coach’s daughter. The story was fast paced, had moments of fun and a bit of sweet banter, but there were also some hard topics from an abusive childhood to health complications with crippling migraines.
Something I really enjoyed about this story was the chemistry/ relationships within the friendships and teammates. In those moments you could see the power behind have a support system.
I think personally for me the story felt like it was a little rushed at times or skimmed over. I think there could have been moments that were taken to a deeper level to really bring these main characters to life. I had a hard time fully connecting to the story/ characters but it was still an enjoyable enough read.
Lane is starting over at a new university and on the hockey team. His goal is to stay out of trouble. After a hookup with a girl named Lee, he’s adjusting to his new team. He soon discovers that her name is Cora and she’s his coach’s daughter.
Lane and Cora try to avoid their attraction, but they soon find themselves opening up to each other about their struggles. Cora has severe migraines and Lane’s childhood trauma is a huge part of his life. They begin to see each other in secret so Lane can remain on the hockey team.
When secrets come to light and the past repeats itself, can these two survive the fallout?
Another great read by Rachel! Excited for this new series!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC. This was my first book by Rachel Laberge, and I enjoyed getting to experience her writing style.
If you love hockey romance, a coach’s daughter storyline, and a touch of forbidden romance, this one may be for you. The relationship develops at a comfortable pace, and the story offers a sweet, easy reading experience with characters you’ll enjoy spending time with.
While it was a quieter romance for me, I still found myself invested in the journey and appreciated the heart behind the story. Overall, a charming sports romance that will appeal to readers looking for something light, heartfelt, and easy to get lost in. 🏒
Rachel. LaBerge. Where the hell you been loca? How is this my first time reading one of her books? Who was gate keeping her? Because HOLY BALLS THAT WAS GOOD.
I started reading and stayed up until I literally fell asleep with my kindle in my hands. It was so good and spicy right away. I loved the push and pull between the couple when they are trying to deny their feelings. Now sweet baby emo boy Lane, I wish I could hug him in real life because wow he deserves it all. And Cora is finally there to show him. I loved it.
“Coralee Banks. You’re my kind of good girl.” So much praise in this book.. And my absolute number one microtrope - he finishes in his pants 😂
READ THIS WHEN IT COMES OUT! Thank you my now favorite human Rachel 🫶🏼
I thought right away that Cora and Lane had amazing chemistry! I was so excited when they ended up together. Forbidden romance? Say less!
The backstory with Lane was so sad, but so real! I feel like accidents happen so much with college kids. Lane is such a kind, caring guy who had such a sad story! I’m thankful that he met Cora and that she fought for him in the end!
Cora also realized that there is more to the world than getting everything right, which I believe is very important. So much pressure can get put on us to do everything exactly right!
This book was such an easy read. I felt like I breezed through it and could have read it within 24 hours, but life ya know! 😅
What We Knew Then by Rachel LaBerge completely pulled me in from the very beginning. Cora and Lane have an immediate, undeniable connection that neither of them can ignore. The classic good girl meets bad boy dynamic is done so well, with plenty of chemistry, tension, and emotional moments that kept me invested.
The push and pull between them, combined with the forbidden nature of their relationship, made it nearly impossible to put the book down. Lane’s mysterious past and the hidden secret surrounding him had me constantly wanting “just one more chapter” to find out what was really going on.
If you enjoy emotional romance, undeniable chemistry, and a story that keeps you guessing while your heart is fully invested in the characters, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.
