Your Body is My Prison

Rate this book
Michelle, is a bored Florida teenager with no real ambitions in life. Having recently graduated from high school, she longs for something exciting to happen to her, yet doesn’t really want to do much of anything except hang out with her boyfriend and watch UFO footage online. In fact, what she’d really like is to have an encounter with an alien species. Much to her surprise, she gets her wish, but on a much more intimate level than she’d expected, when Tavy, a humanoid from the planet Cassiopeia, is convicted of murder and sentenced to spend some time on Earth…imprisoned within Michelle’s body.
Humanoids from Cassiopeia don’t feel pain and they have chose Earth as a perfect place for punishment of their perpetrators. Cassiopeians call that process “the rehabilitation”. A soul of a criminal has to suffer and die with its human host in order to learn about the pain and appreciation of a life. The bloodshed measures the sentence.
As Tavy enters Michelle’s body (on a spiritual level; this is not exactly a gruesome, hostile, physical encampment), she first begins to experience some disturbing visions. Distracted and worried that her mental health is in jeopardy, Michelle is involved in a catastrophic accident that will have a significant impact on her life. Eventually she comes to understand Tavy’s presence and to communicate with him, thus finding herself dually coping with not only an alien body invasion, but also a profound personal tragedy. Furthermore, when she finds out that the only way for the terms of Tavy’s sentence to be met is for the two of them to experience intensely painful situations together, Michelle is forced to face yet another seemingly unsurmountable obstacle. Along the way, she has quite a bit of growing up to do, as she is forced out of her unmotivated lifestyle and into one more fitting of a responsible adult.

EDIT: Rating lowered to one star because of the author's malicious response to my review. Completely disgusted.

DNF at 155 pages. review coming.
the only reason i didnt give this one star is because of its potential.

REVIEW:

So I received this book rather randomly in the mail. I had received a message from the author a few days before that it was coming, and I wasn't sure what to expect. The synopsis wasn't the most exciting and immediately after hauling the book, I wasn't sure whether I had the time for it. That night I began reading it, and immediately was captivated. The writing wasn't amazing, but the beginning of the book gripped me and I found myself liking the first few chapters. I remember thinking during chapter one that this could easily be a four-star book.
However, it quickly went downhill.
I began to realize that the main character, Michelle, lacked emotion. Very early on in the book a tragedy struck her tragedy, but she never really reacts to it. That was the most bizzare thing in this book to me, was that she literally had family members die and it doesn't even describe her emotions of sadness or scenes of her sadness. She just kind of moved on and was like "okay" and resumed with life as normal, except complained about how her stepdad was mean to her afterward. It was utterly unbelievable, literally and figuratively. After this I started to notice that every character was pretty bland. The other glimpse you got of their emotions is when they would mumble to themselves and be like "wow i'm upset" but you never got descriptions of those emotions.
Particularly, Michelle's stepdad was confusing. He was an extremely undeveloped character with no emotions, like Michelle. He is posed to be the "bad guy" of this book. He and Michelle aren't close at all, especially after the accident mentioned earlier. He is clearly a little bit psychotic, but the author writes him as abusive and clearly not well in the head VERY sloppily. His actions are random, and even when a reason is given for his cruelty, it's petty and not realistic whatsoever. I can't even talk about it without spoiling it, but abuse and rape are handled in this book very, very clumsily.
Almost worse than the stepfather being abusive for trivial reasons is Michelle's reaction to these events. Again, she is emotionless to them, and instead of trying to get help for herself or to remove herself from the situation, she's like "oh, better stop wearing revealing clothes around my stepdad." I can't even voice to you how dumb these characters are, how unrealistic their actions are, how angry I am writing this review trying to explain the lack of emotion in this. Everyone acted like a robot. None of their actions made sense or had any sort of explanation behind it.
Toward the middle of the book, Michelle attempts to commit suicide. It was so bad, I was almost offended. She had no reason to other than her being over-dramatic and I feel like the abuse and suicidal tendencies in this book were handled so, so, so horribly. It is the farthest from accurate portrayal of abuse/suicide that I have ever seen in a book before. And since you had no emotional connection to Michelle, all her actions seemed ridiculous.
And I haven't even brought in the part with the aliens yet.
So the whole deal with aliens is that on another planet, if you commit a crime, your "jail" is to be sent to earth and trapped inside a human's mind. This concept makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why put another planet in danger? How is someone else's moving, living body a prison?
With these unanswered questions in tow I just kept reading, and was appalled at Michelle. When she discovers that she has a murderer living in her brain she says- i shit you not-- something along the lines of 'omg i love aliens'
Her reactions in this book are completely, completely unrealistic and bizarre.

If I were an agent reading this, I would tell the author that it needs a lot of work.

Ok, I am biased, because it's my book.
This novel would be appreciated by readers who read to think rather than to feel.
The text is lean, you wont get lost in descriptions.

YOUR BODY IS MY PRISON is not just about alien who is trapped in a girl's body.
This book is about our world and the way we treat each other, especially those who believe differently than us.

Strong 3.5

What can I say, I love realising that I discovered new and interesting stories and this was a good example.

Okay so, on the more technical aspects of the way they book was written since it is translated into English, I felt that there was smooth reading throughout. The writing was on point, I mean I cannot really fault it since there were no grammatical errors that I noticed.

Your Body is My Prison definitely had a vibe that could resonate with the Wither series by Lauren DeStefano. Because it kept developing on the mythological and mysterious type of ideologies which truly captured the unique story the author tried to create. It kind of also resembled a little bit of The Darkest Minds book in terms of the psychological aspects.

Action.

Adventure.

Mystery.

Aliens..

Mind-games.

Sadness.

Darkness.

Exposure

Starting from the first chapter and throughout about 3/4 of the book, I can safely and definitely say that it was ADDICTIVE. It instantly grabbed my attention as it had a confusing inception type of theme to it? It made you wonder on the all questions you'd ask yourself if you were in an alien (pun intended) world that was the polar opposite of what you know.

It has psychological perspectives throughout the story which is a great way to give off clues as to what Michelle's "nightmares are made from and the constant mindset of why, how and who the hell?! The story is also action packed but because it centred around thought provoking psychological aspects of ones mind, it was made for a fun read.

One of the aspects that I did not really like from the first few chapters was the over descriptive explanations in the story behind her mother, brother, and father. It slowed down the story a little and it made me reconsider whether I will keep on eagerly flipping to the next page...

BUT the action packed intense and almost raw like second but almost the same scene where she murders the man, hooks you into wanting to keep on going; even when faced with the boring parts. This reminds me of the type of books that try to balance out the greatly created 'moving/action' moments within the story with information that can sometimes seem forced. I mean, this observation is mainly because I prefer and lean towards dialogue based descriptive information that the reader learns through. Or even a simple one or two word description in the characters change of mind would be enough to show rather than tell the reader...

Another aspect that made me less attached to the narrator was the way she made her decision and her general lack of sympathy or emotions. At times it seemed like the reader was expected to feel sadness or cry in the characters place instead. For instance, when her little bother died, I was fully expecting at least half a chapter if not the rest of the book to be filled with sad thoughts, memories, tears and the raw emotional instability when it came to her finding out more about the aliens. But that did not happen. Definitely a negative factor that I cannot overlook since I am an empathetic type of writer and would just personality think that if anything happened to any of my family members, I don't know how the hell I would be able to cope. If ever.

Carrying on from that point and finishing the book, I did feel satisfied with the overall story. I knew why I was addicted to it and it was made well to last throughout the entire pages written.

Overall, I really liked the different ways the author created a

beautiful,

unique,

intriguing,

overwhelmingly interesting ideas,

and an interesting way to present a fictional world that has potential realistic certainties to is as well.

It was a fictional dark mystery that I was addicted to but I found a few mishaps which made me reconsider a few aspects of the overall book.

Recommending this book would be easy. I would definitely say that anyone can read it. Whether you like YA - I think you'd find this a fast paced and thought provoking book. Whether you like Adult books - it'll probably be a fun read. And if you like cultural, historical or non fictional books? You should also give this book a try because you will end up with more questions that you ever thought possible from the barely there 160 page book!

Thank you Oksana Leslie for the beautifully but interestingly created dark world! I enjoyed it more than I was expecting especially because I have a background in Law & Criminology so I naturally tend to take mysteries to heart and over-analyse every dusty corner. But with this book, it was definitely fun and if anything, a good way to get my mind of reality for a little bit :)

Ok I have a lot to say about this book. First I really liked the way it looked at grief and death and the way it showed how people think when dealing with grief. The fast, unfocused, disjointed though pattern. The emotions that you feel from anger, grief, regreat, shame, frustration. And how you react to people and how you cant feel like yourself and can't help put feel lost and run by unease. And I get the want to come together as a family and can't because of how you are feeling. And I get Michelle actions and behavior towards Tavy because it means being connected to someone when you feel most alone. And I think writing style and speed along with characters actions dipected all of this. And while I liked the fast pace most of the book during the "rehabilitation" I felt the fast paced rushed somethings I would have perferred to seemore flushed out. But I also get it showed a teens inability to comprehend all of what she was going through. But during the end action sense were great an suspenseful. And the end with Tavy was great and I was so happy to see everything work out. Now I must mention that while there was supose to be two main characters Michelle and Tavy, their really wasn't. Michelle was the main character and why Tavy was their and played a large role he was more a character like Steve. Meaning he supported Michelle and helped her find herself. And Tavy was enjoyable and added such an element to the story but he just didn't come off as a main character to me. This book wasn't perfect and there were parts I would have perfered to go slower or been more clea, but overall a solid book I really enjoyed and found characters that all had flaws and redeable characteristics that I think were special and conectable and really made this a book I enjoyed.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I am happy I did. I really enjoyed this book so much in fact I read it in one day. I found it to be a very interesting concept. I really liked Michelle and Tavy. It was a heart breaking story. I actually learned a few facts. I found it intriguing to get a small glimpse into different cultures. My only complaint about it is I wish it was longer.

In this Syfy kinda paranormal alien themed novel we find a young girl whose body seems to be the prison for an entity from another planet that had committed the crime of murder. While the book lacked the fine tuning of say a Jeffery Deaver or other such author who has published many novels, this book still had the structure that I was able to find enjoyable. Some of the best writing was about fate and how people make some off-hand comments about wanting more rest.. boom next thing you know that person is now in a coma... or how you want your life to be more exciting... what could be more exciting than meeting an alien. I look forward to seeing what this author has next to offer us... maybe a series?

"(...)“Let’s learn to live in harmony without recrimination. I had also thought I could never kill anyone. We never know ourselves fully. What are we capable of doing? Where are the boundaries of our fears? What does it take to cause real rage, and how do we destroy the feeling of shame and guilt?”..."

Your Body is My Prison is a sci-fi drama charged with lots of gory scenes. I've never thought this mix of genres would be so interesting.

Humanoids from Cassiopeia don't feel pain so they have chosen Earth as a punishment for their criminals. Tavy, a healer from that planet has become a murderer and is sent to Earth, to inhabit the body of Michelle. Michelle is a teenage girl that one day causes an accident while driving distracted. Tavy must suffer through her body and mind, this process is called "rehabilitation".

I liked how this "rehabilitation" consist of little trips to different places where cruelty is being committed. That way we can see a lot of awful rituals from different cultures and we get to think about the present of the human race.

I loved the drama. Aside from the sci-fi elements, there is a family drama that takes place in Michelle's home. Her stepdad, after this accident she caused, becomes abusive and resentful. Her life is hell. She has to deal with the consequences of the accident, the new soul inhabiting her body, and the constant harassment and accusations Fred makes.

When I started the book I was a little bit worried because I had read a review that said it was not written in proper english, but the edition is professional and I have found only 1 typo in the whole book (a thing that could have happen to anybody).

However, I have to admit that the dialogues that involved Michelle and her boyfriend, Steve, were a little bit weird because of the abrupt way in which they often ended.

The novel is fast-paced, full of gory scenes that were astonishingly developed and a story worth discussing. I have noted before that some religious rituals or cultural traditions are depicted as cruel realities that still plague our planet. I don't think there is anything offensive about that, I think that we can all agree that those acts of violence cannot be justified.

The book is quite spiritual, though. And for me that was not a good thing because I'm not very spiritual. I enjoyed that Michelle found a book about dream control and tried to achieve it, but that book also said that by changing your diet you could acquire that ability. It seemed to simple a resolution for such a complex situation.

Another thing that annoyed me a little was that the ending is too happy for my taste, but for people that likes an optimistic vision of life, the book is perfect. It gives hope and shows the way the situations can drastically change in very little time.

To summarise, Your Body is My Prison is a thought-provoking book with a very original concept, and an amazing mix of science fiction with real life. It has its flaws but it's completely worth the read.

I will be waiting for Oksana's next book!

"(...)The woman was murmuring something to herself. It was a song. No. It was a prayer. No. She was reciting spells! The shaman had an aluminum basin near her with a dark bird in it. The bird’s legs were bound. Suddenly, Michelle realized she was that bird, and it was terrifying. The knife in the shaman’s hand was getting closer and closer. Slice! Sharp pain shook her body..."

I'm not going to go too much into a summary because I feel the summary on the book does it justice and if it grabs your interest it will probably be something you will want to read. So I'll go into a few other things about this book.

This novel was interesting. I looked at several of the reviews on goodreads.com and many said they couldn't finish it because of the language gap since the author is native to Russia. Honestly I was expecting the language to be worse because of those reviews. It really wasn't that bad. Yes, there were places where you can tell that the author's first language is not English, but I felt she did a great job and it takes a lot of guts to write in a second language, especially English if it is not your native language. I just had to read a little slower to make sure I fully understood what the author was trying to say when there was a grammatical misstep. But it did not steer me away completely from this novel. It was an easy and fast read regardless and I still enjoyed myself reading it.

Honestly, the only reason I'm giving this book 3 instead of 4 stars is because I really didn't like the epilogue. I felt it was fine where it ended and it was not needed to add the epilogue. And the epilogue kind of confused things for me. Up to that point I had no troubles following the ideas and concepts behind this book. But the last few pages tripped me up a bit. I might be the only one that didn't like the epilogue, but I still enjoyed this book. It had interesting views and ideas about aliens and how they might encounter us differently than we normally would imagine. Not as explorers, but as prisoners.

Every culture in the world has its own conception and idea about a place of eternal torments and despair.... Hell
The place somewhere far away where some supernatural forces torture your personality forever.
But what if Hell is not such a distant place at all????
Look around and be honest: the earth is full of grief and hatred can be considered Hell itself.
Highly organised extraterrestrial beings have the same thoughts, so they use our blue dot for punishment of their criminals.
Using human bodies as prison cells, they force their own felons to go through pain, fear and atrocities all the way to total redemption for their sins.
So yesterday you were a young girl with the usual problems, but today fate has a special deal for you: let's multiply your worries and diversify them with such gems as blowing up with a bomb, ritual sacrifices, medieval executions and other nasty things.
As if your own cruel, crazy stepfather and paralysed mother are not enough.
Going with her Cassiopeian guest through painful rehabilitation, Michelle learns about the injustice of our world, the cost of anger and the power of forgiveness, the senseless nature of human conflicts and violence.
She has lucid dreams, becomes stronger and experiences personal growth.
But is it enough to break the exhausting bondage in which Michelle and her prisoner become each other's hostages?
Figure it out in this book full of suspense, philosophy and thoroughly developed characters

I just finished reading the book your body is my prison and I really enjoyed it. I thought that it had a lot to it and it kept me interested the whole way through. I was so interested in the book that it did not take me long to read because it kept my attention. Since I'm in college I like to read more captivating books and this was sure one of them. I just got the book today and it took me two and a half hours to read it since I enjoyed the whole concept of the book. I was glad to have read this book and I can not wait for more books to come out. Even though there is violence in it it still had very interesting storyline to it. I could relate to the character Michelle because i also had to care for my mom. I understand how hard it must of been because it is hard to see a parent ask of a sudden need to be cared for when they cared for you all your life. My situation was different because my mother had cancer but i still took care of her but i took care of her till she passed away. I also liked how dreams are portals to the past because when i dream at night i dream of my mom which makes me happy but when i wake up i am sad. This book connected to me and i related to Michelle.

I got a copy of Your Body is My Prison from a give away, thank you Oksana.

The opening scene will certainly stay with me. Personally, I don't like gory books/movies, so this book was a new venture for me. It hits on several themes; death, loss, abuse & rehabilitation.

With attention to detail, Oksana used a generous mix of sci-fi and reality while walking her characters through life changing scenarios. Michelle & Fred dealing with a death in the family, the paralyzation of Michelle's mother, Fred's abuse & Tavy going through "rehabilitation" for committing murder; the overall plot has a full spectrum of subplots and drama.

Although the book is fast-paced and full of very gory scenes, the dialog was flat. For me, dialog is key for character interaction. Without it, there's no connection between characters and I find it hard to connect as well.

For being written in a second language, technically speaking, the book flowed well. I tip my hat to Oksana for managing such an undertaking.

If you like sci-fiction with a touch of fantasy and drama, you should try this book.

It's amazingly philosophical, too. It will make you question your life, something that is not usual for a fictional book.

It's the story of Michelle, a teenager that is having a really hard time in life and she is trying to cope with all of these new things: abuse, death and an alien in her mind.

The world and magic system is built perfectly. The characters are very solid and greatly developed.

I can't find a single awful thing to say... the ending is marvellous, too. It gives a great message of hope and redeption.

I'm dying to read more from this author!

I picked up this book because I saw the writer and I share name and thought "I should totally read this!". And I don't regret doing so at all.

The first word that comes to mind when thinking of this book is weird. It's written in a style that's not very popular for YA books and that actually was refreshing in a way. It's driven more by the facts surrounding the events rather than the emotions of the characters.

The plot was interesting and the aliens were... Not as human as you might expect them to be. It was very nice to read about aliens that don't know more about our human cultures better than us, even more - they didn't know much at all and they had to ask about it. And that really made the book enjoyable for me. However at some points the story was a bit difficult to follow as a whole, especially towards the end, the events surrounding Christmas (I don't know how to hide a spoiler writing on mobile app. so I'll leave it at that).

The author obviously doesn't know English on professional level, however I think that it didn't stop her from delivering her message. Others have commented that they had difficulty understanding some sentences, however this didn't apply to me as my mother language is very close to the author's.

In conclusion, I liked the book. It wasn't the best one, however it was very enjoyable. I would love to see more books from this author :)

4.5 but since I like rounding...!
For starters, Your Body is my Prison made me jealous, because now I want a murderous alien living inside my mind!
This book is surprisingly well written, considering the lovely Oksana Leslie has written this book in English, a language she learned later on in life. So let me tell why I love this book, and why you should pick it up too! I love how everything is described in such as poetic way, you can get lost in the imagery. I love how shivers run up your spine when some of the chapters end on a cliff, making you want to keep reading. But what I love most is the sizzle between the two main characters; that unknown element they have towards each other, and the anticipation they both share to learn more about each others planets and lives. I think the idea of an alien living inside someone else as punishment is very unique, which is what enticed me to begin with.
Oksana has a written a terrific novel that terrifies you and excites you. It makes you think, which is the greatest gift a book can give.

First I want to thanks to Oksana Leslie and Goodreads for the giveaway. I didn't expect it at all. :)

So… I'm not so much into sci-fi and aliens, but even I was curious about that one. I read it in about 2 days, if that means anything to anyone. It will never be a bestseller, but the very idea is interesting. So, yeah, I liked it. There are a lot of explanations and facts that shows very good knowledge. There's mentioned a lot of books and authors and advises. If you like that stuff, then this is your book. For me it was a bit too much.
I expected more passion, though. More emotions. Everything was very sterile… numb, empty. Every feeling has to be explained, not felt. It was somehow flat. And things… they happened randomly.
The end of story was nice. Not unexpected but nice. Even the twist at the very end, but it still was awesome and for that one is my third star. I pretty much expected everything that happened through the whole book. Even though, I still enjoyed it.
So, in my opinion, this book has a really big potential, but it needs a bit more work on it.

I am not a reviewer, but that particular book really hit me.
I bought Your Body Is My Prison on my KINDLE app and read on the phone. It was only $2.99.
An excellent book - fascinating read. Even if you are not a fan of the sci-fi genre this book will grab your attention. Things advance quickly, stuff happens in every chapter. I am not sure how the author did it but she was able to combine two things which are impossible to combine at first glance – a routine of an ordinary life in the suburbs of Florida and an alien. The story sounds realistic and convincing. Maybe someone will make a movie out of it one day? You never know.
I am glad that language is not lavish like the language in LORD OF THE FLIES. Some books have to be written in a simple way, I believe. because of the complicated plot and brain twisting themes. Your Body is My Prison contains adult themes, and is a little more graphic than what I personally consider appropriate for teens
It is one of the most imaginative books I have ever read! Definitely not for narrow minded people.

This was a fun read with an interesting concept for a Sci-Fi. Once the story gets going, with the car crash and the internal voice of the alien--it becomes really interesting and quickly a hard book to put down. It brings a lot of information to readers about violent events that happen around the world that are known about, but not really thought about in depth. Because of that, parts are violent, but it does really open up your eyes to the violence around the world. This novel is a fast pace, thrilling adventure, and you're be wondering if there'll be a sequel with the Doctor ... or one about the world the alien is originally from, as both sound like interesting concepts for stories.

The ending is wonderful, and the ending at the epilogue is even better. Fantastic way to end the novel.

Well done, Ms. Leslie.

This book is a page turner. Through the mind's eye of Michelle, a central character, I was taken on a spiritual journey that meld my mind with her own and let me into her world of a parallel universe and an otherworldly being. Her world is broken apart by the disruption that constantly affecting her consciousness. The story shows a matrix of characters whose fate collide and intertwine and how Michelle's choices can change the destiny of others. Thought provoking and intellectually stimulating, it packed with philosophical themes. Edge of your seat kind of read. Just when you think it can't get better than this. Craving more from this writer.

Goodreads win. Will read and review once received.

I received this book yesterday and stayed up all night reading it. I will admit at first I was a little nervous on whether or not I would enjoy this book. About 40 pages in I found myself to be enjoying this book. I found it to be written well. One other thing I enjoyed about this book is it had a very unique story to it. There were a few things I disliked about this book, but it didn't take away from the story too much. I would recommend this book to friends.

I received a paperback copy of this book for an honest review. My apology to the author for only posting my review now.

I enjoyed this book a great deal more than I thought I would. Based on the title, I feared that it might be a romance novel. But I was pleasantly surprised. This was a very intriguing and interesting book on a fantasy genre story line I had never seen before. And that was okay! I recommend this book to all fantasy / sci-fi readers wholeheartedly.
