Four shining stars for good stories. The book was conversational in tone when detailing Hansen’s exploits as a drug addict and sex worker. The author jumps around a bit in time so the story isn’t necessarily linear.
I waited AGES for this book to come out—ever since Iris Berry posted that it was going to come out on Punk Hostage Press. The publisher changed but the book is finally here and it was thrilling to read. I have the feeling that Zoe Hansen has a lot more stories to tell—I’m hoping there are more books to come.
Posh teenage wild child Zoe escapes unhappy, dysfunctional family life in London's Chelsea for the bright lights and low life of Manhattan, New York City. Already in possession of an escalating heroin habit she finds work as a sex worker to fund her addiction progressing from street walker to the owner of five brothels and more besides. The stories inside are fast-paced, at times harrowing and often hilarious. And there is light at the end of what could have been a very dark tunnel. I enjoyed this amusing little debut memoir immensely. My only complaint is its brevity so I hope there is more to come from this bright new writer.
