About the author

Saladin Ahmed was born in Detroit and raised in a working-class, Arab American enclave in Dearborn, MI.

His short stories have been nominated for the Nebula and Campbell awards, and have appeared in Year's Best Fantasy and numerous other magazines, anthologies, and podcasts, as well as being translated into five foreign languages. He is represented by Jennifer Jackson of the Donald Maass Literary Agency. THRONE OF THE CRESCENT MOON is his first novel.

Saladin lives near Detroit with his wife and twin children.

I've always been a fan of Bishop from his cool appearances in the animated show, his key role in "age of apocalypse" and his turn as a "villain" at odds with Cable. Plus, he has a great design.

This issue does a very skilled job in retelling Bishop's history and, more importantly, reframing it so that it suits this writer's take on the character which makes things run smoothly. It is also such a 90s feeling comic that I'm pretty sure I've already read a similar plot/approach before. I've definitely read something that focused on his relationship with Shard before. In that sense the book doesn't appear to be providing anything new but it does hit those 90s nostalgia buttons and fans of "X-Men 97" should also be happy.

It remains to be seen whether the series will add anything new or if it will just be a timeless low stakes adventure. With Marvel it's often hard to know.

Will I read the next issue? maybe but possibly as a digital trade.

Wait for the trade collection? based on the other solo X-Men titles it may be wiser to see if the quality remains and cheaper to pick up the trade.

A superficial overview of Shard's and Bishop's pasts. Doesn't go into the reason why Bishop came to the 616 past in the first place, doesn't go into anything about how Shard joined X-Factor or anything else beyond the fact she was a hologram, and DEFINITELY doesn't go into the period where Bishop was evil and hunting down Hope Summers.

This gave just the lightest skimming of history so that Bishop didn't come across like the sociopathic serial killer that he is.

Meanwhile, the "Flamequake" character introduced as a villain, undeniably just a mashup of Pyro and Avalanche? She made a comment about Bishop's gun, and how his energy blasts without it are such a downgrade. This has almost no basis in the comics, but it does seem to be an allusion to Bishop's character in the MOVIE, X-Men: Days of Future Past. There, the filmmakers struggled with how to show his power without having someone verbally explain that he absorbs and redirects energy. Their solution was to show Bishop charging his energy rifle instead of simply blasting with his hands. This, it appears, is what this new villain was referencing.

That movie came out so long ago, and it butchered so much stuff from the comics. Really? We're going to reference that?
