DEATH IN THE VEIL

In Newcastle, magic is monitored.
And the Veil—the fragile boundary between the living world and something ancient—does not forgive mistakes.

Elira Fenwick is a necromancer in service to the Tribunal, trained to speak to the dead and keep the balance. She follows the rules, keeps her head down, and pretends the sigil etched into her wrist means nothing at all.

Until a powerful vampire is found murdered in his own crypt.

The death sends shockwaves through every faction bound by the Three-Stone Pact. When Elira recognises the sigil carved into the crime scene as her own, she becomes part of an investigation she was never meant to survive.

Watched by the Tribunal.
Shadowed by political enemies.
Haunted by a ghost who refuses to leave her side.

As alliances fracture and old magic stirs beneath the city, Elira is forced to confront a truth buried in blood and lies.

Her mother may not be as dead as the world believes.
The Veil may be thinning.
And someone is desperate to keep the past sealed.

Because some boundaries exist for a reason.

And the Veil is starting to breathe.

Death in the Veil is the first book in the Veil Trilogy—a dark urban fantasy set in Newcastle featuring necromancers, vampires, dangerous magic, and deadly political intrigue.

I really enjoyed the story and style of writing. Information fed nicely at the beginning so as not to overwhelm but gave you a good background
Characters with depth, each with a distinctive voice.
Descriptive scenery that made you feel immersed in the book.
I'm just sad I have to wait for the next one.

I have edited my scoring from a 4* to a 5* because:

This book has been on my mind often since finishing it. I read A LOT, so for a book to have affected me enough to stay in my thoughts, it deserves a 5 star rating!

First Necromancy Book

Death in the Veil by G. Harris was my first venture into a story centered around necromancy, and I have to say…

I was pleasantly surprised.

This book felt fresh and different from many fantasy romances I’ve read, and I found myself completely invested in the story from the start.

The FMC was one of my favorite parts of the book. She’s snarky, witty, and unapologetically herself. While she may not always follow conventional ideas of right and wrong, she has a strong moral compass of her own and refuses to stop searching for the truth, no matter where it leads. Her curiosity and determination made her incredibly engaging to follow.

The story is filled with elements I love: a slow-burn romance, plenty of yearning, hidden agendas, mysteries waiting to be uncovered, and a ghost who managed to be both hilarious and lovable. The character interactions were entertaining, and the plot kept surprising me in ways I didn’t anticipate.

What stood out most was how unique the overall story felt. Just when I thought I knew where things were heading, another layer would be revealed.

And that ending… HEARTBREAKING ❤️‍🩹

Rather than wrapping everything up neatly, it leaves you with the feeling that there’s still more to come…that the other shoe is about to drop.

Overall, this was an engaging, unique, and thoroughly enjoyable read. If you’re looking for a paranormal fantasy with necromancy, mystery, humor, and slow-burn tension, this one is definitely worth picking up. 📚❤️

great read.

Love how the author describes the use of magic. The pace of the book is also great and it’s very easy to get lost in the story in a good way.

Add this to your spooky season TBR!
Set in a wonderfully foggy and atmospheric Newcastle, Death in the Veil brings together necromancers, vampires, ghosts, forbidden magic, court politics and mystery. There’s so much woven into the world, from the secrets surrounding the Veil to a corrupt Tribunal and the strange circumstances surrounding the death of a vampire leader.
I loved the setting and atmosphere, and there’s plenty here for anyone who likes their fantasy dark, supernatural and full of secrets. Eilra is relatable and kick ass! Her defiance and need for answers pushes the plot forward quickly!
I was not prepared for that ending and I’m slightly upset about it 😂 but now I absolutely need to know what happens next. I can’t wait to see where these characters end up. A perfect and intriguing opening to the series!

This is a strong start to the trilogy. I need to know what happens with Elira, Kit, Dane and the bloody Tribunal.
We have vampires, a complex magical system and a corrupt political body who seriously need dismantling.
The world building and descriptive emotional development has set this trilogy up incredibly well and I can't wait for book 2.
