You Are What You Imagine: 3 Steps to a New Beginning Using Imagework

Rate this book

This is a practical book that guides the reader step by step from difficult times through a turning point to a new beginning. Each chapter includes a section entitled Spiritual Gym, which features imagery exercises relevant to that chapter. Dr Glouberman's website will host MP3 downloads to help guide the reader through the exercises. The content is based on a 3-step approach to new beginnings:

1. The catalyst: the life event or inner search that gets the person moving.

2. The turning point: an expansion in perspective on oneself and life. This includes an acceptance of present feelings and situations, a connection with deeper and more stable levels of oneself, and a vision of the possible futures.

3. The new beginning: accepting the vision without expecting to be 'happy ever after'.

The various stages of the process are illustrated through quotes and accounts from interviews with friends and colleagues, as well as prominent figures. Interviewees include Chad Varah, founder of the Samaritans, Gabrielle Roth, Five Rhythms creator, actor Michael York and poet and men's movement founder Robert Bly. The book combines a chatty, approachable and humorous style with original insights of subtlety and depth, as well as state-of-the-art utilisation of imagery throughout.

This a a great book. As a clinical Hypnotherapist, I value the way Dina explains the different ways in which the imagination works and how we can harness this to create better, happier lives. The exercises are also a great way to help develop your imagination to open possibilities you might otherwise miss.

They've been telling us that thinking positive thoughts matters for your overall mental health, this book is a testament to that. A short read, but nonetheless packs a punch. The book's approach to growth/new beginnings is through the use of imagery and a 3-steps approach. 1. The catalyst: an event in your life that gets you moving 2. The turning point: an in depth look at your life and honing your self-awareness, this can include acceptance of current feelings and situation and a look at potential futures. 3. The new beginning: the acceptance of growth and without the pressure of a happily ever after.

Theres a lot of anecdotes, quotes and interviews done by the author on friends, family and prominent figures on first hand account and insights on the use of imagery in everyday life. This book was definitely worth the read, and will be used a reference in the future.

A good practical book on using visualisation and 'image-work' (drawings and other forms) to realise your goals. I am not sure it lived up entirely to the 'life changing' promises on the cover (!) but nonetheless it provided a lot of practical techniques and food for thought on goals and purposes, often with a more spiritual perspective than a more standard book of this type.
