Thirty Things

Rate this book
All their lives, Finn and Nate have been inseparable, sharing everything, and when a childhood accident left Finn broken, Nate stood by his side as all his other friends left. After all their years together, there’s one secret Finn still hasn’t revealed: he has been in love with Nate since they were eight years old. Hiding his feelings for twenty-one years—terrified of what might happen if Nate ever found out—has been difficult, but losing his best friend would be worse than living with a bad case of unrequited love. Unfortunately for Finn, Nate doesn't make it easy.

Nate believes there are some things that just have to be done before your thirtieth birthday. As a gift to Finn, he plans an adventure to check off a list of thirty things to experience before hitting that milestone. Starting in Crawfordsville, Indiana, they tour the country, trying new things and meeting interesting new people. Nate’s having the time of his life, but he can tell Finn is holding something back. As the days count down, navigating the back roads suddenly seems easier than figuring out where their relationship is heading.

One thing’s for certain. There will be no turning back.

Thirty Things is a no angst, low tension, feel-good story about two 30-year-old men who have been best friends since childhood embarking on a month-long road trip.

Both Nate and Finn are self-employed, Nate as a writer and Finn as an editor. Nate is straight (he's slept with numerous women and always talked in detail about appreciating the female form), so Finn's yearning for Nate is seemingly a case of unrequited love.

When Finn was 8, an accident left him with crushed legs and pelvis. He walks with a limp and doesn't have much strength in his lower body. Nate has always been his rock and support.

The two men live together and share everything . . . Well, almost everything.

What I loved about this story is the overwhelming tenderness between the MCs. These guys have always been there for one another, and their friendship is solid.

Nate especially is so amazingly SWEET with Finn and plans the road trip as a birthday present for him.

The "thirty things" of the title refer to experiences that Nate wants to have with Finn; the men go bungee jumping, sleep under the stars, visit Vegas, and have other adventures.

Finn is the first-person narrator of the book, and he is a little whiny. He complains about doing anything out of his comfort zone, and Nate has to cajole him constantly to try.

I understand that Finn has been sheltered due to his disability, but his constant complaining wore on me as the book progressed.

The story has a slow, easy pace. We get a lot of Finn's introspection regarding his feelings for Nate.

Besides one small misunderstanding, which thankfully gets resolved quickly and maturely (these men know how to talk things out!), there is no real tension to the plot.

My main niggle is the way Nate's sexuality was handled. I assumed that Nate would turn out to be gay for Finn. However, at one point Nate states that he's always been gay or at least bi, but has only ever been attracted to one man: Finn. I can go with that, but I wanted to know more.

Why was Nate bringing home women and screwing them when the man he loved was in the room next door?

Considering how close the guys have always been and the fact that they have lived together since college, why did it take them so long to acknowledge their feelings for one another?

Once Nate and Finn kiss (around the 30 percent mark), I expected an explosion of passion, but the smexy scenes were a bit subdued for my tastes. There is sweetness in spades, but the oomph is missing.

Even so, I love the friends to lovers theme, and the connection between Nate and Finn was unmistakable.

Plus, the last envelope that Finn opens, the thirtieth "thing," had me smiling like a fool. What a perfect HEA!

This story was an incredibly sweet, low drama, road trip with the bff you’ve had a crush on since you were eight, kinda story.

I had been carrying a torch for him for twenty-one years, and by all accounts, I should have given up by then. The man was straight. I was, unquestionably, not.

The multiple stops and attractions along their road trip were quite authentic, and it felt the author had likely made this trip herself.

The GFY aspect of the story didn’t really bother me, but Nate parading multiple women in and out of the house they shared had to have hurt Finn so much. However, the ending made up for all my questionable feelings towards Nate. Such a fabulously romantic ending!!

I loved the 30 envelopes and each one of those messages.

This would have easily been a five star for me have there been more of an explanation of Nate’s POV. I wanted to know when he made the switch, when did he decide to give up women and focus on Finn? When did he start seeing Finn in a romantic way rather than his best friend?

The little cameo of Evan and Bran was perfection, and made me want to go back and read Keeping Sweets all over again.

This author writes the sweeter side of romance. If you’re in the mood for something that will make you smile, I can’t recommend this author more.

*Another excellent recommendation from Dan!

It's a road trip and that's exactly how it feels. A beautiful story between two best friends who become lovers. The 30 things unfortunately feel a bit rushed. It is a beautiful idea. The relationship that develops or is taken to the next level is wonderful and you are shown many nice places and events. I just unfortunately felt like I couldn't quite enjoy it. Everything was so fast ...
But the whole thing is super romantic and lovely, and Nate and Finn are just perfect for each other.
It's not overly cheesy, a thousand thanks for that. It all feels quite down to earth.

“We had sex this morning.”
“I know, but then we were in the car for eight hours. Eight hours is too long to go without tasting you.”

If you're looking for a nice, easy read with little fuss or muss, then this book is for you. I advise the reader to not question too much or think too hard - as that would only result in frustration.

Simply put, this was a very angst free - technically gfy - sweet & sexy romance, about two best friends finally admitting their feelings. If only Finn and Nate had gotten their shit together sooner, they could have been boinking like bunnies for years. Apparently, turning 30 was just the impetus to pull one's head out of their ass and take a chance at love, via the road trip to beat all road trips. I say better late than never, right?

I was so happy when Cate asked me to beta read for her. So I got to read this book a few months ago and I loved it then and I still love it now. Finn and Nate are such a great couple and I absolutely love best friends to lovers stories.

A light and an ok friends to lovers story about a road trip (and relationship stuff).
It starts as a seemingly unrequited love kind of story. I am not a fan of too much angst, but this story almost doesn't have any which is weird considering that they have to deal with a huge change in their relationship (just a remark). Nate made the road trip possible for Finn since he had an accident when he was a kid and never had such an adventure.

I liked the road trip.

I simply have to stick to mysteries with at least one dead body. Contemporary romance for the sake of romance is rarely something that makes an impression on me. It's not impossible, just very rare.

In any case, if you love light contemporary romances with a hint of humour, then don't listen to me and give this a shot.

SWEET and UNCOMPLICATED.
This story hits lots of magic buttons for me: friends to lovers, road trip, firsts and MC with a disability. I was really in the mood for something sweet and feel good and this hit the spot.

This wasn't perfect, though. It's hard to believe that Nate and Finn have been best friends since kindergarten yet Finn always thought Nate was straight and nothing ever happened until they were 30. Did I mention that they've actually lived together (in college and since)? Also, Nate is a little too perfect. However, if you can get past these points, then you may really enjoy this.

Wonderful HEA to this one too!

This story was the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed. It turns out that was exactly what I was in the mood for – little to no angst, sappy love confessions galore, sugary-sweet moments worthy of swooning, and a HEA that was so fricken picture-perfect that it was basically a fairy-tale ending.

Adding to my enjoyment was the integration of a bunch of my favourite book tropes, including friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort feels, a GFY MC, and one of the best road trip storylines I’ve ever read (I legit wrote up a USA travel itinerary based on some of the destinations these guys visited).

Overall, I really enjoyed this read; it was beautiful in its simplicity and that's what worked for me.

Note: This book was provided to me by the publisher through Hearts on Fire Reviews in exchange for an impartial review.

Squee! I loved these guys and their thirty things to do before Finn turns thirty! I just finished it after a marathon reading session --- yes, it’s so good I didn’t want to put it down. It’s sweet and romantic and OFY and oh my, such wonderful MCs! Add in a road trip across the beautiful US and what’s not to like?

Finn and Nate have been best friends since they were little kids and Finn has loved Nate ever since he was eight years old. But has he told Nate? No way, because the women in and out of Nate’s life are a clear indication that Nate is not gay and Finn won’t do anything to jeopardize their friendship. He can’t risk losing Nate, even if he has to keep his unrequited love quiet for the rest of his life.

When they were young, Finn fell out of a tree into the path of an oncoming car and was severely injured. He fought to learn to walk again, and his fighting spirit remains strong, even on the days when the pain is difficult to get through. It helps that Nate has never left his side. His friendship and support mean everything to Finn so when Nate suggests a road trip to celebrate Finn’s thirtieth birthday, Finn agrees to it even though he isn’t particularly thrilled by the idea. But Nate then sweetens the trip by presenting Finn with thirty envelopes, representing thirty things they will do before Finn turns thirty. Nate will be handing them out, one or two at a time, when he feels the time is right.

It’s hard to describe how much I appreciated this story. It’s fun and lighthearted, yet it has a mix of angst and heartbreak interspersed. Finn’s courage to overcome his disability and Nate’s support, friendship, and love all shine through. I’ve always loved the saying that “the joy is in the journey, not the destination” and in this case that saying totally describes this story. If you want a wonderful romance with two strong MCs, by all means, read this book and take their journey with them.

In the meantime, instead of giving a more in-depth overview of the story, and as a bit of a teaser, here are thirty things I loved in this story (in no particular order):
1) The premise of the story itself—a road trip to visit places and have adventures they’ve put off until now
2) The thirty things—each a surprise to Finn—to do before he turns thirty
3) MC Nate—strong, masculine, a supportive friend, and a successful writer
4) MC Finn—sweet, funny, loveable, and a successful editor
5) Nate’s pickup truck custom-fitted to make it easy for Finn to enter and exit
6) Nate’s enjoyment in doling out the envelopes with surprise destinations one at a time
7) The hotel where the boys spend their first night
8) The trip to Vegas
9) Horseback riding
10) A helicopter ride
11) Nate carrying Finn on his back over rough terrain
12) Bungee jumping
13) A trip to Disneyland
14) The tree house
15) The wigwam
16) The rafting trip
17) The overnight in the tents
18) Their shared childhood memories
19) The quiet moments in each other’s company
20) The skinny dipping
21) The scene on the hotel balcony
22) Finn’s unrequited love and longing for his best friend
23) Meeting Finn’s old high school nemesis in Colorado
24) The descriptions of the beautiful scenery and locations in the US
25) The revelations about Nate’s past dating
26) The beginnings of a romance
27) The virgin scene
28) The sex
29) The love
30) The last envelope
31) Their HEA

I highly recommend this story to all lovers of M/M romance. This one is guaranteed to make you feel good all the way through and long after you’ve come to the end. I may just have to go back and read it again.

BR, July 22th with Paul and Sonia.

This was a sweet ride!!! I love road trips and friends-to-lovers stories!!
Just an easy going, no angst story.

Finn and Nate have known each other since childhood. For Finn’s 30th birthday, Nate surpises him with a 30 day’s road-trip. Every day Finn needs to open an envelop which contents another adventure…

I was great reading a new adventure every time. They went bungee-jumping, skydiving etc.

Finn has been in love with his friend since he was a child. They are best friends, living together, but Nate is straight. So, Finn thinks….

Loved the thirtieth envelop Finn opened… Beautiful HEA!!!

“Saying I love you is so simple, but what you are to me goes beyond love. I’ve known you since we were little, and I’ve loved you just as long. I’m sorry it took me so long to see it, but now that I have, I can’t imagine my life without you in it in every way.“

On one hand I liked the story; the writing, though as different from what I’m used to from this author, is good too. But there wasn't much dialogue, which would've brought me closer to the characters.

Also there was a lot of infodump throughout the whole book. Which is fine if you like that kind of writing, but I prefer to learn little tidbits about the characters' past by way of dialogue.

I love road trip books, and I admit I was a bit jealous. The description of the cities and what they were doing was awesome. But this book to me was mostly about the trip and not about the romance, and I blame the lack of communication for that. Even when they did talk (which wasn't often), it wasn't anything of importance (regarding their relationship), but what they planned next. Though they clearly had so much to talk about, and they were in the same space for hours, confined in the car or in hotels, but for some reason the author decided to leave it to the very last minute.

So this wasn't the author's best work, but enjoyable.

I was eight years old the first time I fell in love.

This was a sweet, low angst, feel good read about two best friends embarking on a road trip adventure that turns into the beginning of their happily ever after.

Nate and Finn have known each other for over 20 years and I loved the little snippets of childhood stories we got...all the childish shenanigans they got up to as little boys. One such story was a life changing event for Finn, resulting in a shattered pelvis and a lifetime of limited mobility.

Told entirely in Finn's point of view, we really get to see how much he loves and cares for Nate. He's been pining for Nate since he was eight years old, knowing that his straight best friend would never return his feelings, but finding it impossible to move on.

However, under the stars on a riverbank in Colorado, Nate makes his move, both shocking and thrilling Finn.

"I have faith in us. Maybe this will work, and maybe it won't, but Finn, you are my best friend. Nothing will ever change that. And if this does work, can you think of anything more amazing than being best friends and lovers? Can you think of anyone you would rather be with than someone who knows you better than you know yourself?"

Oh Nate....I absolutely melted at how he took care of Finn. He allowed Finn to have the perfect balance of independence and assistance....never making him feel like a cripple or less than adequate.

Unfortunately, I didn't really feel very connected to Nate. I didn't know him at all. Finn points out in the beginning of the book that he had to endure the constant parade of women Nate brought home in the past...but all of a sudden Nate flips his switch and he's gay?? The whole thing is brushed off with one simple statement....Nate has always been gay, or at the very least bi. That's it....that's all the explanation you get. Too weak for me.

And although it's clear that Nate and Finn belong together and we get plenty of steam between the two....something was missing for me. I didn't get that spark or sense of passion that I needed from two guys who have been pining for each other. The sex fell flat for me <------ it kills me to write that.

While I did enjoy the book, the writing style wasn't my cuppa. Told entirely from Finn's point of view, the book reads as much like a travel magazine article as it does a romance. I found myself skimming the overly descriptive passages. I wish there was less explanation about hotel rooms and more dialogue between the MC's.

But the book ended on a great note, with Nate saving the best for last with envelope #30. A truly perfect way to end their road trip and begin their happily ever after.

One month, a road trip and thirty things to do...

I struggled a little bit with this. Did I like it?Yes. Did I love this? No. I like Cate Ashwood's writing and I have read and loved many of her books. But while I enjoyed this story there were some things that made it difficult for me to like it more. And because I was seriously confused on how to rate this I made a list with the pros and cons.

What I liked:
-I LOVE road trip stories. They take me to places I know I 'll probaby never visit and they speak to the adventurer in me. The author did an amazing job describing those places and the experiences of Finn and Nate.

-The friendship between the MCs. Friends-to-lovers is a favorite theme of mine and the friendship and love between these two, the way they could always count on each other was undeniable.
-The fact that Nate took the time to plan all this for Finn to the last detail. It shows how much he loved him.
-The ending. This was one of the most amazing and strong HEAs and it had me smile-blush-giggle like a fool. And that last letter...so cute and romantic

What I didn't like:
-I felt that the story lacked realism sometimes and while in some cases this is this is totally fine, in this story it left me with some questions. Finn and Nate are supposed to be friends since they were 8 years old. Nate admits he wants Finn and they start a sexual relationship. This goes on and while Finn is delighted with this development, he doesn't know what it means for Nate but he doesn't ask because he's afraid of what the answers might be. Come on!!! Your best friend, who you though was straight is suddenly attracted to you, he has sex with you every day , you know him for 20+ years but you keep doing this with him without talking about it?
-Nate's sexuality confused me. At first he is supposed to be straight since he has been with a lot of women and never with a man. I assumed he was gay for Finn but later he admits that he is gay or bi. So why did they wait for so long to be together? It's not like Finn had any relationships or even hook ups with other men.
-Nate's protectiveness towards Finn. At first i liked it a lot and it is understandable because of Finn's accident whan he was a kid, but as the story progressed I felt Nate was a bit overprotective, more like a brother than a lover.

Despite all this I DID enjoy this story and I didn't get bored. So please don't let the above discourage you.It is a very sweet story and I DO recommend it.

For the most part, this book was a sweet, enjoyable story. However, I find it really hard to believe that these two men were friends for more than 20 years and nothing ever happened between them before this road trip. When things do finally spark off, it's all so easy that you're slightly infuriated that it didn't happen before this point.

Also, just a warning to readers that the characters break the fourth wall. It doesn't happen often, but if you're not a fan of the literary device, you may want to steer clear.

This story is sweetness overload and completely angst free. Nothing really goes wrong, and more than once I found myself smiling to myself because I’d read something that was too cute for words. I LOVED that the MC’s know how to communicate. There are misunderstandings, they struggle, but they find a way, and somehow fix it. This was great for two reasons 1) It was a nice change in the narrative; 2) It speaks about the friendship they have, and it makes it more real.

Nate and Finn have been best friends since they were kids, and now they share an apartment. They’ve been flatmates for some time now.

When Finn was around 8 years old he had an accident. This accident damaged his legs, and since then he’s walked with a limp. Nate never left Finn’s side. He was always there for him, supporting him, and encouraging him.

The story is told in the voice of soon to be 30 Finn, who has been in love with Nate since they were kids. I enjoyed Finn’s voice. I enjoyed seeing the world through his eyes, and seeing Nate through him was a lovely experience.

One day Nate comes from work with a surprise for Finn: he’s taking him on a road trip, and he has a list – a list of things that he wants them to experience together – things like go camping, go to a rodeo, sleep in a tree house, and all these things happen in different a different State. This was quite lovely, really. Ever since you read this you just know that Finn’s love isn’t unrequited as he thinks. The way Nate treats him leaves no doubt that there may be a bit more of plain friendship on Nate’s side.

I liked Nate. I loved how he was always there for Finn. I loved how thoughtful and caring he was. But I what I loved the most is that the way he took care of Finn wasn’t over protective. He always tried to give Finn the freedom to do, he encouraged his independence, but at the same time stood there, by his side, just in case.
I also loved Finn – his insecurities, his dreams, his humor, and the way he sees the world. I loved his unconditional love for Nate, and I loved how he kept reminding himself that no matter how much he loved Nate, he was his best friend first. Always. I don’t know if I believe this is entirely possible in real life, but I enjoy it in books.. Haha.

I loved seeing the transition from friends to lovers. The tenderness between them was a treat to read. I enjoyed their dynamic, and I enjoyed how good they really were for each other. There was real, deep friendship between them and it reads through every single page of the book. I loved that there was no big fuss with that first kiss. See, Finn is gay, openly gay, but Nate is bi, closeted bi – Or so I deduced, it was a bit confusing -. It was great to see two men who felt so comfortable with each other that when things happen they don’t question them, they just live them.

Another thing that I really enjoyed was the memories that are brought into the story in every chapter. They illustrated perfectly their friendship, and the bond they shared.

The writing is nice. There is a lot of description of places, and most of the time it was nice to read it, but at times it felt a bit too much. I definitely read about places I’d like to know one day.
I liked the MC’s, but I think they don’t sound like men in their late 20’s – early 30’s, I think they sound younger, like in their very early 20’s. This isn’t bad. I just found it a bit weird. Also, I think they were too perfect, especially Nate.

The one thing that really caused me trouble is that I feel like it doesn’t matter how long you’ve known someone, or how close you’ve been to someone, you still need time to adjust. However beautiful and lovely their story is, I don’t think they were prepared for that ending. Not yet. I wish I could have seen them going back home and live the struggle that comes after the honeymoon phase. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be in the minority about this, though.

There is also Finn’s doubts about Nate’s feelings and where they stood. They were best friends, and yet he was afraid of asking. This troubled me, on one side I could understand his fear, but on the other hand I wondered why was so difficult to ask if this was the person he trusted the most. With this comes the other thing: They never once talked about Nate’s sexuality before the trip, even when Nate had known for some time that he was attracted to Finn.

All in all I enjoyed this book. I’d never read anything by Cate Ashwood before, and I will definitely be reading more of her work. I have no idea if this will be continued as a series, but if it is I would definitely read the next books as well.

Thirty things was the perfect way to start off my mini vacation. This is just a low angst, feel good, friends to lovers story and it left me with lots of warm fuzzies.

I thought Finn and Nate were adorable. I was especially able to relate to Finn. For different reasons I share Finn's challenge of living each day with chronic pain and not wanting to allow it to limit or restrict my life. It's a challenge and yes at times it can be frustrating to say the least. So I especially loved Finn and the way he recognized his problem, dealt with it, but refused to let it rule his life.

Finn and Nate have been best friends for most of their lives. They share everything except for maybe one little secret that Finn guards closely his love for Nate. Better to be best friends and roommates with Nate and have him in his life than to loose his straight friend altogether, right?

Nate has decided that he and Finn need to go on a road trip and do 30 things in celebration of Finn's 30th birthday or maybe Nate has more than celebrating Finn's milestone birthday in mind. One way or another things are going to change between these two friends the real question is can Finn handle the change?

Once Nate made his feelings clear to Finn things happened pretty quick between this pair and while I like a slow build in a relationship as much as the next person these guys have been building for over twenty years so I have to admit I probably would have been having a few whatthefuck? moments if their relationship had progressed to slowly. I mean really? Finn's already waited 20+ years to get his hands on the love of his life and now that man is standing before him and saying 'yeah, me too.' sorry but if I was Finn I would have been all over him like 'white on rice'. After all there's patience and then there's simply 'what the hell are you waiting for? An engraved invitation?'.

I liked what came next the progression of their relationship from friends to lovers and everything that entails both physically and emotionally , watching Nate as he helped Finn work through his insecurities about what all this would mean for them when they returned home and ultimately seeing their connection grow as Nate continued to take Finn on their amazing road trip. I have to admit I especially loved the stop at Disney because I've been there and so it was really cool when they were talking about 'The Blue Bayou' restaurant and 'The Pirates of the Caribbean' ride (which is a lot of fun by the way). I turn into a big dork when this happens in a book I'm reading because more than every it makes me feel like I'm right there with the characters.

'Thirty Things' was a fun, low (zero) angst story about how sometimes keeping secrets can be what keeps a person from having what makes them truly happy. This was also my first read for this author and I am definitely looking forward to enjoying more of her books.

3.5 stars rounded up because smiles are always worth a little more.

I usually always love this author but for some reason this one and I didn't gel. I put on hold a little while back and I tried to get back to it, but we again didn't mesh. DNF 37%. It just seemed like everything happened too quickly between the main characters. So much depends on mood, I think. Anyhoo, I will read this author again as this is the only time I've not finished a book of hers.

I don't know. I was really enjoying this book right up until they got together as a couple, but then it became too easy to put down? Other things easily took me away from this book. I normally read a book within 2 days. I have been reading this for well over a week. I don't know. I just wasn't feeling it anymore. It has pretty good ratings, so try it. This is one of those rare books that is sweet and has a bite to it at the same time. As stated in the blurb, Finn and Nate have been friends since childhood and are now house mates. Finn is an editor, Nate is an author. Finn is gay, Nate is straight. Isn't he? Finn also has health issues stemming from being hit by a car in a freak accident when he was a boy. Nate decides to treat them both to a 30 day trip across the country and back before they turn 30, with 30 (or more) adventures along the way. Along the way, Finn and Nate discover secrets about each other. As we see from the sealed envelope clues for each adventure or activity that Nate presents to Finn at intervals, Nate knows more than Finn realized. Even how Nate is actually paying for this at times extravagantly expensive vacation is something he doesn't admit to Finn until near the end of their trip. As the count down of envelopes reaches the final precious surprises, the reader will begin to hope the last one is the greatest gift of all thirty. Whether it is what you expect or not, Cate Ashwood does not disappoint.
I loved this book so much and will reread it again and again. It will go on my list of comfort reads. Thank you, Ms Ashwood, for this treasure of a story. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

If you like road romances, this is a must read for you.

Nate and Finn take an epic road trip around the US. This is a sweet friends to lovers romance and I really like both heroes.

However, much more emotionial work needed to be done to make this a really good book. Why did either one wait so long? Let's discuss bisexuality... And so on...

Quick read.

I loved this book and the tension was crazy good, but I feel like it ended too soon and I wanted to see Finn and Nate sustain their "new" relationship after they returned home.

The Keeping Sweets cameo was nice.

First of all this is not badly written in the technical sense of the word but it's pretty damn boring. I was over their road trip by the 20% mark because there was nothing entertaining or interesting about it. They didn't use much dialogue and a lot of internal thought processes formed the backbone of the writing, not my favourite narrative or style. You already knew how this was going to go so there was nothing layered or intriguing about Thirty Things.

The worst part for me was that while the MCs are decent enough they had no individual spark that made me love them or care, there was no chemistry whatsoever, and I kept forgetting their names. I like this author's writing generally but this was average in plot and characterisation. Mostly, it just dragged.

Review based off an ARC copy provided by the Author in exchange for an honest review...

Finn and Nate have been best friends since they were both knee high to a grasshopper. And while life hasn’t always been easy for Finn, Nate has always been there to catch him, his protector of sorts. At just seven years old, Finn was hit by a car, and while the damage to his legs was permanent, he still has the use of them. His best friend Nate stayed by his side. At the tender young age of eight, Finn realized he was in love with his best friend, and he has kept that little secret tucked safely away deep down inside for the last twenty one years. He and Nate are still best friends and now co-workers and roommates. With Finn’s thirtieth birthday just around the corner, Nate surprises him with a thirty day trip across the country complete with thirty envelopes of thirty things to do. See the theme here?

The trip starts off innocently enough, but then a few days in during the bungee jumping portion of the trip, their relationship changes. Pinned together by a thin rope while possibly plummeting to their death, Finn’s almost exact words, something akin to sexual tension permeates the air. And then an anything but innocent kiss becomes so much more during the skinny dipping portion of the trip. As quickly as Finn can snap his fingers, his best friend that he has had wet dreams about, his supposed straight best friend, becomes his lover. It is everything Finn has ever wanted and so much more, but then fear sets in. Finn worries that this trip is just an adventure for Nate, that once they get back home things will go back to what they were before, and he’s not sure his heart could survive that.

This book was just so romantic and fun, light hearted and serious all at the same time. While these two have been besties forever and can read each other like a book, they’ve never opened up about the one thing they have kept secret from each other for over two decades. Now on a whirl wind trip across the country, surrounded by some of the most beautiful and romantic places as pit stops, they start to explore a more passionate type of relationship. It was beautiful and endearing. Ashwood really captured the beauty of the trip with wonderful descriptives of every place Finn and Nate stopped at on their trip, she had to have done months of research into the story she told of their journey, and it definitely came across visually in the words I was reading.

There really were four main characters in this story. Finn, Nate, the scenery as they bounced around the countryside on their thirty themed trip, and the love that grew exponentially from the beginning of the book, right down to the last knee bending page. The story flowed well from beginning to end as well, a steady pace growing gradually as did my anticipation, I was so anxious to see how the trip ended for Finn. Would he and Nate continue to add to the foundation they started on the trip? Or would his worst fear be realized and the love they shared on their journey just be some kind of phase for Nate?

This book was a little bit gay for you and a whole lot of hopeless romantic, a little bit of angst but a whole lot of passion. Like I said, just a fun read and I had a smile on my face the entire time. Held my breath a couple times, unsure of how something stated or hinted at would play out, but so happy in the end when I got a little misty eyed and finally let out that breath. Definitely a must read!

This is a stupendously cute story of friends turned lovers. Finn has been crushing on Nate his whole life and it takes a trip across country for Finn to realize that Nate feels the same way.

I loved the individual tasks (30 of them) Nate set up – I want to go on that trip too! (For the record Portland is an awesome town!) It was a fun, light read full of sweet moments, some sexual tension then release and lots and lots of feels.

Though there were times I thought some of the relationship stuff was a bit unrealistic: why Finn was still a virgin, why he kept assuming Nate was just experimenting, why he thought this could ever be anything other than a real relationship… they were minor.

The writing and editing are excellent and the story left me smiling!

Very easy enjoyable read while I was traveling yesterday. Finn and Nate were cute together and their road trip sounded like a lot of fun. Great friends to lovers story - #30 was the best!
