Bound to the End #1

Claimed by Ruin

Rate this book
As a medical examiner in New Orleans, I know death. I know how it looks, how it smells, how it lingers.

This isn’t it.

Bodies that should be fresh are weeks gone. Others refuse to rot at all. The same impossible pattern ties them together, and everyone is too quick to blame the local cult.

They’re wrong.

Then Caelum Brandt appears—where he shouldn’t be, answering questions no one else can, moving through the city cloaked in darkness and danger.

Like he is invincible.

The moment he touches me, something burns into my skin—a mark I can’t explain and can’t hide.

He sees it. Smiles like it means everything.

He calls himself the Horseman of Conquest.

And whatever is coming next… has already chosen me.

CLAIMED BY RUIN is an enemies to lovers, possessive anti-hero, murder mystery, fated mates romantasy set in the same universe as The Devil’s Bargain series, perfect for fans of dangerous heroes, supernatural romance, and high stakes, tension filled relationships.

Bound to the End is a romantasy series set in the world of The Devil’s Bargain.

Won my free copy from Goodreads giveaways!

This book was OK, but ultimately, it felt like your typical demon/human romance. While the premise was fine, one of my biggest issues was the constant repetition between the two POVs. The FMC would explain her perspective on a situation, only for the MMC to immediately recount the same events from his point of view, and then the cycle would continue. Instead of adding meaningful depth or new information, it often felt like I was rereading the same scenes over and over. I think the story would have benefited from more concise writing and POVs that offered something new to the plot rather than repeatedly covering the same ground.

I really liked the idea of this book going in, and it had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it became pretty repetitive along the way. I was okay with both Cassidy and Caelum, and I also really liked the other three Horsemen. I just wish the mortal reactions to the whole “Hell” situation and everything surrounding it had been a little more impactful because it felt quite short and bland.

The story was also pretty predictable for me, but overall, I think this was a decent start to the series. I’m curious to see where the story goes from here and what we’ll get from the other Horsemen.

Thank you Wildfire Marketing Solutions and Sara McClaflin for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you @wildfiremarketingsolutions for the eARC of this book! I really enjoyed this book. I loved the four horseman concept. This book follows Cassidy a medical examiner who investigates dead bodies. Caelum and his brother were sent to earth to find their mates and complete a mission. I really enjoyed the concept of the four horseman from hell coming to earth. This book is what I would consider or a paranormal romantasy. This book takes place in New Orleans and follows Cassidy the medical examiner and an ancient demon Horseman of Conquest named Caelum Brandt. An incredible combination of I do say so myself. It does have the trope insta love in my opinion and my perception of it. If that isn’t your cup of tea maybe skip this one. To me it sounds like the rest of the series will follow the side characters from this book. I enjoyed myself it was a quick enjoyable read with requiring a lot of thinking to keep up with the plot.

Claimed By Ruin is a captivating story that immerses readers in a world of tension, emotion, and complex relationships. From the start, the narrative creates a sense of mystery that makes it hard to put the book down. What I enjoyed most was the book’s atmosphere. McClaflin skillfully weaves a story where the characters’ emotions and decisions feel meaningful, and shifting relationships create plenty of tension. Moments of vulnerability, conflict, and chemistry drive the story, sustaining interest and making the characters engaging. The book blends emotional moments with enough twists and tension to prevent the story from feeling dull. I particularly enjoyed watching the characters face challenges and how those experiences shape their relationships.

The twists and turns were amazing. I devoured this one. Definitely grab a copy of this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Claimed by Ruin

By Sara McClaflin
Genre: Paranormal Romance / Romantasy / Fantasy Romance
Publication Year: 2026
My Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Spoiler Preference: Spoiler-Free
Disclosure

I received a free advance review copy (ARC) of Claimed by Ruin from the publisher. Receiving an ARC did not influence my opinions, and this review reflects my honest assessment of the book.

Death, Desire, and the End of the World

There are books that begin with a mystery, and there are books that begin with a promise. Claimed by Ruin somehow manages to do both.

From its opening chapters, Sara McClaflin establishes a palpable sense of wrongness. As a medical examiner in New Orleans, protagonist Riley knows death intimately. She understands decomposition, pathology, and the predictable ways the human body behaves after life ends. The corpses appearing on her examination table, however, refuse to follow those rules. Some decay too quickly. Others not at all. The pattern is impossible, and the explanations offered by local authorities are far too convenient.

Before long, what begins as a forensic mystery expands into something far larger: a collision between the mortal world and forces that operate on an entirely different scale.

At the center of that collision is Caelum Brandt, a dangerous and enigmatic figure whose appearance transforms the story from a supernatural investigation into a romantasy infused with prophecy, power, and fate.

The result is an entertaining blend of murder mystery, paranormal romance, and apocalyptic fantasy that should appeal to readers who enjoy morally gray heroes, high-stakes attraction, and supernatural worldbuilding.
Romance Meets Mystery

One of the book's greatest strengths is its ability to balance multiple narrative threads simultaneously.

McClaflin could have easily allowed the romance to overshadow the mystery, or vice versa. Instead, the two storylines reinforce one another. Riley's investigation into the strange deaths provides momentum beyond the central romance, while her growing connection to Caelum raises the emotional stakes of the mystery itself.

Caelum embodies many of the qualities familiar to contemporary romantasy readers. He is powerful, secretive, possessive, and clearly operating with knowledge unavailable to the heroine. Fortunately, McClaflin understands that a compelling antihero requires more than mystery alone. The tension between Riley and Caelum works because their interactions consistently reveal new layers of both characters.

The "enemies-to-lovers" dynamic develops largely through distrust, conflicting goals, and unanswered questions rather than manufactured misunderstandings. That approach gives the relationship a stronger foundation than many novels in the genre.

Equally important, Riley remains an active participant in her own story. Her profession as a medical examiner shapes how she interprets events and investigates the increasingly alarming mysteries surrounding her. Even when confronted with supernatural revelations, she approaches problems through observation and evidence rather than simply accepting what others tell her.

As a result, the romance feels grounded by a protagonist who maintains agency throughout the narrative.
The Public Health Lens: Systems, Death, and Unseen Threats

Although Claimed by Ruin is primarily a fantasy romance, my public health background found unexpected points of connection.

Much of public health involves investigating patterns. An unusual cluster of illnesses, unexpected mortality trends, environmental exposures, or unexplained health events often serve as signals that deeper systemic problems exist. Riley approaches her mysterious cases in much the same way.

What initially appears to be a series of isolated anomalies gradually reveals itself as something interconnected.

I appreciated that McClaflin chose a medical examiner as her protagonist. The profession naturally places Riley at the intersection of science, mortality, and human vulnerability. Even within a fantastical setting, her perspective encourages readers to ask evidence-based questions about what is happening and why.

The novel also explores a recurring public health theme: the danger of easy explanations.

Communities often look for simple causes during periods of uncertainty. In the book, local assumptions about cult activity provide a convenient narrative. Riley's investigation demonstrates the importance of questioning assumptions and following evidence wherever it leads.

While Claimed by Ruin is not intended as social commentary, these elements give the story a satisfying sense of procedural realism beneath the fantasy framework.
Looking Through an Analytic Lens

From an analytical perspective, the novel succeeds because it carefully controls information.

Readers rarely know much more than Riley does, creating genuine suspense as clues emerge and assumptions are challenged. McClaflin understands that mystery depends not merely on withholding information but on providing just enough evidence to encourage competing interpretations.

The worldbuilding unfolds gradually rather than arriving through lengthy exposition. This choice helps maintain momentum while allowing readers to discover the rules of the setting alongside the protagonist.

That said, readers who prefer highly detailed fantasy systems may occasionally wish for deeper explanations earlier in the narrative. Some aspects of the mythology remain intentionally opaque, presumably to support future installments in the series.

As the first book in Bound to the End, Claimed by Ruin necessarily spends considerable time establishing characters, lore, and larger conflicts. Most of this groundwork is effective, though there are moments when genre-savvy readers may anticipate certain developments before they occur.

Fortunately, anticipation does not significantly diminish enjoyment. The appeal lies less in surprising readers at every turn than in watching the relationships and mythology unfold.
A Midlife Reader's Perspective

One of the things I’ve noticed as I've grown older is that I increasingly appreciate competent protagonists.

Riley's professional identity as a medical examiner immediately appealed to me because she possesses expertise, asks intelligent questions, and refuses to abandon her judgment simply because something extraordinary enters her life. Too often in supernatural romance, capable heroines become passive observers once the magical elements emerge. Riley generally avoids that trap.

As a reader in midlife, I also found myself appreciating the story's exploration of trust.

Who do we believe when our understanding of reality begins to shift?

How much uncertainty can we tolerate before demanding answers?

What happens when the person who seems best positioned to help is also the person we distrust most?

These questions extend beyond fantasy. They touch on relationships, institutions, and everyday life. McClaflin uses supernatural stakes to explore deeply human dilemmas.

There is also something undeniably fun about a book that wholeheartedly embraces its genre. Claimed by Ruin knows exactly what kind of story it wants to tell. It delivers tension, danger, chemistry, mystery, and mythology without apologizing for any of it.

Sometimes, especially with a good cup of coffee and a rainy afternoon, that confidence is exactly what a reader wants.
Strengths and Limitations

The novel's strongest asset is its atmosphere.

New Orleans provides an ideal backdrop for a story involving death, mystery, and supernatural forces. McClaflin uses the setting effectively, creating an environment where the extraordinary feels plausible.

The chemistry between Riley and Caelum is another major strength. Their interactions generate tension without relying exclusively on physical attraction, allowing the relationship to develop through conflict and curiosity.

The integration of forensic investigation and paranormal elements also helps the novel stand apart from many romantasy titles currently on the market.

As for limitations, some readers may find certain genre tropes familiar. The mysterious immortal antihero, fated connections, and hidden supernatural destinies are well-established elements within paranormal romance and romantasy. Readers seeking radical innovation may not find it here.

Additionally, because the book launches a new series, not every question receives a complete answer. Some threads are clearly intended to continue into future books, which may frustrate readers who strongly prefer standalone stories.

Neither issue significantly diminished my enjoyment, but they are worth noting depending on reader preferences.
Final Thoughts

Claimed by Ruin is an engaging introduction to what appears to be an ambitious new romantasy series.

Sara McClaflin combines supernatural mystery, romantic tension, and apocalyptic intrigue into a story that moves quickly while leaving enough unanswered questions to encourage readers to continue with the series. The blend of forensic investigation and fantasy mythology provides a refreshing framework for familiar genre elements, and Riley's professional competence helps anchor even the most fantastical developments.

Readers who enjoy dark romantasy, supernatural mysteries, morally gray heroes, and high-stakes romantic tension will likely find much to enjoy here. Fans of paranormal romance in particular should feel right at home.

Most importantly, the novel understands that good romantasy requires more than attraction. It requires uncertainty, danger, curiosity, and the persistent sense that something large and consequential waits just beyond the next revelation.

Claimed by Ruin delivers all of those ingredients and leaves readers eager to discover what comes next.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Coffee Pairing: A chicory coffee from a French Quarter café, dark, rich, slightly mysterious, and perfectly suited to a story where death is only the beginning.

⭐⭐⭐.5 (3.5/5)
🔥🔥🔥 (3/5)

This book exists in The Devil’s Bargain world, but you do not need to read that series first. The author does a good job separating the previous characters enough that you know they have a backstory without ever feeling like you missed something.

Cassidy, a New Orleans Medical Examiner, finds herself at a crime scene where the body makes her question everything she knows.

Enter Caelum, the Horseman of Conquest, sent with his brothers to restore balance to the world.

An unexpected physical contact that saves Cassidy’s life also attaches hers to Caelum’s.

The plot follows them as they attempt to solve the murders while navigating an ancient bond between them. It is similar to the prior series, so if you’ve read that, you’ll have an idea of what to expect. It doesn’t take away from their story too much, but there are definitely a few “oh, we’ve been here before” moments.

The book is medium paced.

The spice is a 3/5—descriptive in some instances and lacking in others.

Overall, it was an entertaining read. I do feel like if I hadn’t read The Devil’s Canvas prior, I probably would have enjoyed this one much more.

Read If You Enjoy:
• Paranormal Romance
• Four Horsemen & Demons
• Enemies to Lovers
• Fated Mates
• Murder Mystery

Thank you to goodreads and Sara McClafin for a free copy of this book.

Finally! Fated mates done right!

Usually in fated mates books, it's forced. Like a magical something has decided that the main characters should be mated and they have no choice. I've always disliked that for two reasons

1) it's non-consensual. Like a god or magic has forced you to feel attraction towards someone and it's not your own body? Magical equivalent of getting someone drunk before trying to seduce them. Or drugging them. And what happens if you're gay but the mating magic tells you to be straight? Or vice versa? Or tells you to mate your sister? You don't have a choice.
2) it gives the mate an excuse to be a dick. Like a red flag relationship, they could be controlling, abusive, violent and you'd just have to accept it because "they're my fated mate". It sounds like "yeah he hits me but i love him because we're meant to be together"*

But not this book!!

"The bond is old. Older than most forms of magic still practiced today." Her gaze shifts briefly toward Caelum before returning to me. "It ties souls together. Not bodies. Not attraction. Souls."

Cassidy actually has a choice!! Yeah her soul is tethered to him but if she doesn't want him, she can go find someone else! It's not forced. Awesome! And caelum actually says that if she doesn't want him, hell leave her alone. Double points!!

Another thing I usually hate about fated mates books is the unnecessary violent jealousy of the MMC. It's stupid because if you're actually fated to be together forever, then why does it matter if another guy or girl looks at, talks with, or even bangs your mate? Let them have fun and they'll be back with you soon. Usually the guy is just a red flag jealous prick for no reason or explanation.
However! McClafin does an amazing job explaining this trope in a way that makes sense. Like it's a disease or instinct that MMC knows is wrong but can't help it. But caelum doesn't just accept that, he actually tries to do better. And i like that.

"Doctor, we have been in your world for two days. In those two days, you have expected Caelum to learn your language, your customs, your laws, your investigations, and your restraint. You have expected him to master a world entirely foreign to him while suppressing instincts older than your civilization. Yet you have spent those same two days refusing to understand ours. You ask him to change. You have not once considered doing the same. "Understanding cannot exist in only one direction,"

I love how much sense it makes. It's true that a lot of love interests in romantasy just say "my way or the highway" without trying to understand where their partner is coming from mentally or culturally. But not this book!

And finally. The fated mates trope usually has the main male character be completely dominating of the FMC. The fmc usually just melts under him and lets him do whatever he wants. Not Cassidy!! She fights for dominance with him and actually acts like a bad ass female character even in bed! I love their banter especially when She's done with Caelums shit.

That mixed with a cool murder mystery and a great cast of characters with senses of humor, it made this book such a fun read.

I received a copy of this book via BookSirens. What follows is my opinion.

This is my first book by this author, and it won't be my last. In addition to wanting to read what comes next in this series, I'm now looking forward to going back and reading the author's other books.

This book caught my attention because of the blurb. I don't know, but for some reason the idea of the Four Horsemen has always intrigued me. Plus, I like reading new perceptions of Hell, and this did not disappoint. I lost track of the number of times that I was surprised by the author's interpretation of Hell, Heaven, demons, creation, and so on. These are ideas I've never thought of before reading this book, but they're interesting, and in some ways possibly better than society's current interpretation of such things.

The book kicks off in the best way because it hooks the reader right from the outset. There's no "boring" period while the reader learns about this book's world. Instead, the author dives right in at the deep end, and we learn along with one of the main characters, Cassidy. This book grabbed hold of my attention and didn't let go until the end. Speaking of the end, this book is first in a series, so it does end on a cliffhanger, but not for this book's couple, or this book's primary mystery.

I'm trying to think if there's something that I didn't like and I'm not finding anything. Well, my heart hurt when the answer to the mystery was revealed, but that's not something to dislike. This was an emotional read. It was a fun read. The characters are all amazing, each unique, yet most are also funny. There's a lot of humour in this book, which I appreciate, especially when it's a book about demons.

I know I've only read book one and that there are probably at least three more books to come in the series, but I think this series would make for a great adaptation to film. It has a bit of everything, from comedic horror to dark romance. In amongst all the action, there's also some super steamy sex scenes with Caelum and Cassidy.

I enjoyed reading this book. In fact, I had a lot of fun reading it. Of course, now I'm wondering about how long I'll have to wait before I get to read book two. I'm excited to see how Thayer will meet his mate, and who they might be.

This was a first time author for me and I am so glad I was given the opportunity to read it. I couldn’t put this story down I got consumed into the world on this book. It was so descriptive I felt like I could truly see what they were seeing and could feel the haunting effect. As weird as it might be to say about The Horsemen of the Apocalypse I really adored these 4 men. They were something else and even though they were supposed to try and fit into our world they still stood out. Since they didn’t live on earth it was enlightening to get their views on everyday things like riding in a car. The FMC Cassidy is as awesome and so intelligent and didn’t seem afraid of anything. She was so good at her job as a medical examiner and she also was very well aware that everything couldn’t be explained and turned to her family when she her new man showed up in her life. The man that fell head over heels for Cassidy is Caelum he is “Conquest” of the Horsemen.
Caelum knows immediately Cassidy is his and she isn’t ready to fully commit to the idea. Caelum had to work for Cassidy even though he wasn’t totally sure what to do all the time. He also had to watch his temper when someone got to close to Cassidy. Thank goodness he had the other 3 Horsemen. We get Caelums whole backstory and how he came to be and what it was like growing up for him which had some tragedy. I just wanted to wrap him up a hug I never would have thought Conquest could be so lovable.
The whole reason Caelum ends up in our world is because of the cases Cassidy is working. These were some horrible and disturbing scenes Cassidy was showing up and the bodies were doing some weird things. Caelum, Severin, Matthias and Thayer are sent to try and figure out what’s going on and try to get it to end.
This was such a good read and you need to read it to find out what happens between Cassidy and Caelum and if they are able to work together and stop whatever is happening in Cassidy’s hometown.

Enjoyment: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ -not just spicy it has a plot oh and by the way he’s pierced and tattooed in a certain place

Claimed By Ruin is book one in the Bound To The End series by Sara McClaflin.

This book opens with Selene Duvain, one of the matriarchs of one of the most powerful families in Hell, helping the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse get ready for their time in the mortal world. There is an imbalance in the mortal world, something is leaking in from across the veil. Only the Four Horsemen can put the mortal world back into balance.

The Four Horsemen are comprised of –
Caelum (Conquest), Severin (Death), Matthias (Famine), and Thayer (War). They are being sent to New Orleans, and are dropped directly into a crime scene.

Cassidy is the Chief Medical Examiner in New Orleans, and these “consultants” are walking thru her crime scene. As she is yelling at them one of the men tackle her Caelum. The Four Horseman know something demonic is at play in this crime scene. And when the body Cassidy is investigating implodes, Caelum tackles Cassidy to protect her. But when Cassidy returns to her office later, she notices she has a mark above her heart under her skin. She comes to find out she has a fated bond with this man. What ensues is a dark world of mortals and immortals. Hilarious moments and gut-wrenching darkness.

The fated bond between Cassidy and Caelum moved along quickly and crazily.

But I love evert moment of them together. Cassidy learning about Caelum’s world and him learning hers!

Amazing world building – especially the golden threads weaving the fates.

I absolutely loved every one of the Four Horseman. And I cannot wait for each of their stories.

Cassidy is an amazing medical examiner that has worked hard to get where she is. She is respected and trusted. But when weird deaths start happening around New Orleans, she can’t quite figure out what is going on. But with the help of the Four Horsemen, they fight both the mortal and immortal world. They soon realize the prison in hell is slowly opening and releasing all the dark demons and unthinkables into the world. Will Cassidy accept her bond to Caelum? And what will that mean to the world she knows and everything in it!

Highly recommend

If you enjoy a good serial-killer mystery that has some major “did not see that coming” twists, mixed with a touch of the mystical, all wrapped in a bit of romance, then this one is for you!

“A decision is made. The world changes around it. Life continues.”
I want to give props to the author for her unique world-building.
The murders - the midirections - the duplicity (wait for that twist)
The supporting cast - FLOVED Cassidy’s family! and the Horsemen
The relationship between Cassidy and Conquest. It wasn't instant acceptance, despite the bond
Cassidy still set ground rules, and Conquest was on a learning curve
An all-around engaging and thought-provoking story that kept me turning pages right up to the end

“Conquest begins the moment someone looks upon another life and decides it belongs to them”
I absolutely adored Caelum, or Conquest if you want to get technical
He blundered everything when it came to Cassidy. His heart was in the right place though.
What do you expect from someone who has lived for centuries but has never known love?
What he did get right is acknowledging her as an equal and letting her walk her own path
Sure, he was beside her, growling and protective all the way. Hades forbid you hurt her.

Cassidy was a force to be reckoned with
Her quick mind had taken her to the top of her field
She had done the relationship thing before and that was enough for her
But how do you turn down Conquest when he comes to claim you?
You don't.

“Peace was purchased. Every kingdom built itself upon bones. Every empire called its dead a necessary sacrifice.”
This has a bit of politics mixed in with the storyline
How the four horsemen came to be
How the afterlife works
The first war

Highly recommend!
I gave this five stars because it drew me in and kept me captivated
Packed with edge of your seat suspense, softened with family, humor and the cutest budding romance
And don't forget the cast that is guaranteed to steal your heart!

Some books pull you in slowly… and then there are books like Claimed by Ruin that grab you by the throat and refuse to let go. 🖤🔥

I went into this one ready for a dark fantasy romance, but I wasn't prepared for just how quickly I would become invested in the characters and their messy little world of danger, secrets, magic, and desire. 👀🥀

Sara McClaflin creates a wonderfully dark atmosphere where nothing feels completely safe and trust is definitely something that has to be earned. I loved the feeling that there was always another secret waiting around the corner, and the tension kept me turning the pages because I needed to know what would happen next.

The characters were definitely a highlight for me. They're complicated, flawed, and caught up in circumstances that make their relationships anything but simple. The romantic tension adds another layer of delicious chaos, especially when you combine it with power, danger, and everything these characters have to lose. 🖤🔥

🥀 TROPES & VIBES 🥀

🖤 Dark Fantasy Romance
🌑 Dangerous Fantasy World
🔥 Romantic Tension
🥀 Morally Grey Characters
👀 Secrets & Betrayal
⚔️ High Stakes
✨ Magic & Power
⛓️ Complicated Relationships
🔥 Forbidden Attraction
🖤 Dark & Atmospheric

What I loved most was that the romance never felt completely separate from the darker fantasy elements. Everything is tangled together—love, power, danger, and survival—and that made the story incredibly easy to get lost in.

As the first book in Bound to the End, Claimed by Ruin definitely left me curious about what comes next. I finished this one with questions, feelings, and that dangerous little urge to immediately pick up the next book. 👀📖🖤

Thank you to Sara McClaflin for the opportunity to read this ARC! 🖤

If you love dark romantasy, morally grey characters, magic, secrets, dangerous worlds, and romance with plenty of tension, this one might be worth adding to your TBR. 🥀🔥

What a journey for Cassidy and Caelum, and what a start to this new series! 🖤

Cassidy is the chief medical examiner. She loves her job and is damn good at it, but when a string of gruesome murders goes unsolved, in walks a consultant group known as the Horsemen…who just happen to be the actual Four Horsemen! 😳

Caelum is the Horseman of Conquest, and after touching Cassidy, she finds herself marked and claimed as his mate… much to her dismay. 😂 These two definitely don’t start off on the greatest note. Cassidy is adamant that she is NOT Caelum’s mate, while Caelum has absolutely no idea how to navigate human emotions or behaviour.

While these two are figuring each other out, they also have to uncover who is behind the murders and stop them from opening a prison in Hell and basically bringing Hell to Earth. So, you know… no pressure. 😂

I really enjoyed Cassidy and Caelum together. Whether they were arguing, working together or sharing more intimate moments, I loved every interaction between them. Watching their relationship slowly develop while Caelum tries to understand Cassidy and the human world was so much fun.

I also absolutely loved the humour between the Horsemen! Seeing these powerful supernatural beings trying to navigate the human world and somehow getting sucked into reality TV was hilarious. 😂

There are some great plot twists throughout, with a few things I definitely wasn’t expecting. And that ending leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger, making it very clear that there is SO much more to come from this world.

I can’t wait to see what we get next from the other Horsemen! 🖤

✨ What to expect:

🖤 Morally Grey MMC
⚔️ Enemies to Lovers
☠️ Touch Her & Die
🤝 Forced Partnership
💫 Fated Mates
✨ Chosen One
🔥 Supernatural Romance

3.5 stars. I had a hard time with this. I'd get really into a scene with the emotional connection between Cassidy and Caelum, and then it would jump perspectives and go back in time or go further in time. There was so much detail about cases and murders and how they connected to Hell that even with reading every word, I was confused about the relevance to the plot of half of what I read. All the references to Hell were very interesting at first, especially when Cassidy's family was involved in the scene, but then all of it overshadowed the dark romance as the story continued. I couldn't follow the murders or why they happened like they did, even once the "reason" was revealed. **Spoilers** Did that Demon try to make the murders happen through Evan for selfish gain? I'm guessing yes with some vague memory that the Demon was mentioned in another chapter, but I didn't get to know that character well enough to not be lost. It took me a few days to read, so whatever was said was too confusing for me to follow and connect to, I guess. Also unfortunately, Evan's motives also made zero sense to me. I don't see why killing people would lead Cassidy to him. Why on earth wouldn't telling her how he felt in subtle ways be better? They already spent every working day together, and apparently, sometimes even phone calls late at night.

I support and appreciate the author's hard work, but I'm an emotional romance reader, and though I did feel it during some really good scenes, other scenes overshadowed some of those moments for me. I did enjoy the high-level concept of Hell and its inner workings, Cassidy's family, and the initial scenes where Cassidy and Caelum's relationship unfolded. I also liked how Caelum respected Cassidy's choices and how Cassidy accepted Caelum for who he was.

An Enjoyable readClaimed By Ruin is an intriguing story that immerses readers in a fantasy world. From the start, the plot creates a sense of mystery that makes it hard to put the book down. We found ourselves loving it.

The plot kept us engaged; the characters are lovable, and the paranormal aspects kept things exciting. The mystery-solving takes place in New Orleans, where the Horsemen land right in the middle of a crime scene. It just so happens that they can aid the police and medical examiner with their special abilities while they are on a mission themselves.

The chemistry between Caelum and Cassidy is awesome. We found Cassidy to be a fierce and loyal friend, feisty, funny, and lovable. Cassidy made us laugh so many times. She is tough but unafraid to show some vulnerability. Her family is awesome.

Caelum ends up being perfect for Cassidy; he is possessive and protective, and both are goal-oriented and work well together. He finds himself in the doghouse a time or two, and their witty banter is priceless; it adds comical relief to the seriousness of the plot and what they are up against, and time is of the essence.

The best part of the novel was being on the journey with them; the bonding progression, we learn so much about the characters themselves, their history, and what came out of it, kept us engrossed in the plot and rooting for a happily ever after for the characters themselves. The side characters are integral to the plot's outcome, and we ended up loving them too. Caleum's brothers are quite intriguing, with sound knowledge and wisdom. We can't wait to see what's next for them.

This was my first Sara McClaflin book, but I'm already hooked! Claimed By Ruin is the first book in a new series I will absolutely be reading. People have been building tales about heaven and hell since Dante, but I've never read one that was 'the Apocalypse, but make the Horsemen HOT!'

Claimed is the story of Cassidy, a medical examiner handling a string of mysterious deaths, who crosses paths with the Horsemen while they're conducting an investigation of their own. One of the Horsemen, Conquest? Let's just say he makes an impression on her. As they work to find the person behind the string of murders, they learn there's a much bigger plan in play.

Based on how this one ends, it's clear this will be a series built on the Buffy model, e.g., little bads in each installment pointing to an overarching Big Bad for the series. I *think* (hope?) each book in the series will feature a different Horseman's story. And even though I just finished Claimed, I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Many thanks to BookSirens for an ARC in exchange for my honest assessment of this work.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
An inventive dark paranormal romance that reimagines the Four Horsemen mythos with genuine originality. Cassidy makes a compelling lead, a medical examiner whose investigation into a string of impossible deaths pulls her straight into Caelum's orbit, and their fated mate bond builds with real tension as they work together to uncover a much bigger threat lurking beneath the murders. Caelum's Horseman of Conquest persona brings plenty of dark, possessive intensity, and their dynamic delivers strong chemistry and enough humor to balance out the darker themes. The mythology takes some getting used to, with readers occasionally needing to reread passages to fully grasp the lore, and the transition into this new supernatural era feels a little glossed over compared to the depth given elsewhere. Even so, the world building is imaginative and distinct from typical afterlife stories, and the series appears set up to build toward a larger overarching threat across future installments, likely following different Horsemen. A dark, addictive start to a promising new series for fans of supernatural romance and possessive antiheroes.

The Four Horsemen but make them hot? Okay, you have my attention.

I really enjoyed the premise of this one. Cassidy being a medical examiner investigating bodies that are behaving very strangely gave it a murder-mystery element that I wasn't expecting, and mixing that with the Horsemen and an impending apocalypse made for a really fun combination.

I particularly liked the Horsemen themselves and their interactions with Cassidy and her family. There were some genuinely funny moments amongst all the death, murder and general end-of-the-world unpleasantness.

My main issue was how quickly Cassidy and Caelum's relationship progressed. I don't mind fated mates at all, but I would have liked more tension and build-up before they gave in to the attraction. Give me a little yearning first!

But the murder mystery kept me interested, I really liked this version of the Horsemen mythology, and the ending has definitely set up something much bigger.

I'll absolutely be back to see which ridiculously attractive bringer of the apocalypse we get next.

It is difficult to create an immersive experience from a story but Sara McClaftin has done it with Claimed By Ruin. The title sounds like a campy romance, but the book is anything but. It is a well-written, gripping novel with suspense, fantasy, mystery and romance. The story has multiple layers. The mystery is a series of gruesome murders set in New Orleans. Our heroine, Cassidy, is a the medical examiner for the case. She has worked hard to achieve success in her career and the respect of her colleagues, so is understandably resistant to being claimed as the one. Our hero, Caelum, is a complex man with a dark, complicated past that shapes who he is. The story tells us his story without it seeming like artificial (not your trite TV psychiatry conversations). The supporting cast of characters is also believable and well thought out. As the story unfolds, the mystery is solved and our two lovers find their HEA. Their steaming bedroom scenes have just the right amount of detail to steam up the reader too. I look forward to learning more about the other characters in the subsequent stories and recommend that you do too!

This is my first book of this author and I am very interested in reading the rest of her works!

*slight spoilers ahead*

Overall I really liked this book and was very intrigued by the Horsemen myth as it’s my first time reading a variation of the myth.

What I enjoyed of the book;
I liked the suspense around the murder mystery and also the solving of it.
I also really liked the interaction of Cass’ family with the Horsemen and how the guys reacted back to the personality of the humans. It was a good laugh

What I disliked a bit:
I don’t like how even though they’re mates that they slept the same day just met. Granted it didn’t happen immediately in the second chapter but still. While I hate (a very) slow burn, I would’ve liked and preferred a more buildup between Caelum and Cassidy.
Personally, I don’t mind the soulmates/mate trope as long it’s not so insta-lust.
The smut wasn’t bad either

Claimed by Ruin by Sara McClaflin is a dark paranormal romance that blends murder mystery, supernatural mythology, and an intense fated bond. Cassidy Boudreaux, a determined medical examiner, finds her world turned upside down when her investigation into a series of strange deaths brings her face-to-face with Caelum, an immortal Horseman of Hell. Their unexpected bond forces Cassidy to question everything she believes about life, death, fate, and love.

The chemistry between Cassidy and Caelum is the heart of the story, with their contrasting personalities creating plenty of tension and emotional depth. McClaflin’s fast-paced writing, alternating perspectives, and escalating supernatural mystery keep the story moving, while themes of trust, identity, transformation, and finding humanity within darkness add depth beneath the romance. A compelling choice for readers who enjoy dark paranormal romance, immortal heroes, fated bonds, and high-stakes supernatural suspense.

I was hooked instantly. Really liked the overall story and the world the author created. Will be checking out some more books from her. Can't wait for the other horsemen books to be released as well. Interested in seeing the rest of the horsemen. Spice is high, so heads up. Enemies to lovers and fated mates is my fav, so I definitely enjoyed watching the relationship develop throughout the story. There were some twists and moments that I wasn't expecting, which made it even more fun to read. It was really interesting to see this view of hell and wasnt what I expected. So it was a nice surprise.

Overall, this was a really good read and super happy i got to early read this book. I would recommend it if you enjoy fantasy romance with plenty of magic, tension, and a little bit of darkness mixed in.

This author is new to me. I liked her writing style. I loved the storyline and the backstory.

Cassidy was dedicated to her morgue/career. She is very likeable, defending those she loves, her family was also interesting .

Caelum made me smile. His dry humor, even though he did not mean to be funny, was in the best places. Being from Hell just made it better.

POV of each. The prologue was excellent steering the stage for the rest of the story. I loved the mysteries, the twists, the worldbuilding and of course the slow burn to steamy romance.

I loved reading about both Cassidy's and Caelum's past. And the gifts Cassidy inherited from Caelum.

Can't wait to read Thayer's story.

Balance has been disrupted on earth and the four horsemen are called to restore it. That is when Caelum, the Conquest meets Cassidy, his mate. They have to work together to find a murderer and, at the same time deal with their mating bond.

I devoured this book and couldn't put it down. It is very well written and captivating. I love the humor all of them have, the dynamics of Cassidy's family and how the Horsemen have a found family of their own. I would've wished to know more about Cealum's life and was a little disappointed that the memory sharing stop to only one event. That is about all the complaints I have, this book not being long enough. I can't wait for the rest of the series.

This is a 4.5 stars read for me.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was an interesting take on the Four Horsemen myths, but honestly, I loved it.

It was different enough from how a lot of stories tell of 'hell' that it kept me interested, even if I had to reread the same page multiple times to understand the lore haha.

I do wish there was a bit more behind them understanding the new era they were stepping in to, as that felt a bit brushed over.

Other than that it felt like a strong story that I was able to follow along with, and I enjoyed all the characters involved.

Can't wait to read the next Horsemens story. :)

This was the first book I’ve read by Sara McClaflin and it most certainly won’t be the last!

Claimed by Ruin had me fascinated from the first chapter. This was the first romance that has involved the four horsemen and I am so hooked! I loved reading this!

The history of the characters and how feisty Cassidy is was incredible! Caelum comes so far throughout this story. He basically has no understanding of human emotions are living in Hell his entire life and it makes for some funny interactions with Cassidy. I loved Cassidy’s sarcastic nature and especially her interactions with her family! I was laughing so much!

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

I received an ARC copy from the author, and this is my personal review.

I NEED MORE!! I loved Caelum and Cassid. From the very first moment they met until the end, they had me wrapped in! The way they first meet is by far one of my favourite MC meeting scenes, poor girl didn't know what was going on! The horsemen aswell you can't help but love from the moment you meet them, the few of them being engrossed in daytime TV is one of my favourite small moments! I love the way that Caelum is devoted to cassidy and will let her call the shots when needed. They're definitely one of my favourite couples now in Sara's worlds!
