Caroline Halperston is used to the residents of Penarth talking badly about her. How could they fail to, when her own mama spends her days endlessly telling tales of her daughter’s cruelty and wickedness? She has long since been resigned to her fate as neighborhood pariah until an unexpected incident sends her fleeing into arms of Gervaise Langdon, Earl of Atherton, who carries her off to London with him.

Gervaise is very far from being a knight in shining armor, and Caroline absolutely should not trust him, however charming and affable he may appear. One shocking proposition later, and they set up an impromptu household in the attic of a gin palace with a pair of cats for company…

It is not long before Gervaise realizes he has made a severe miscalculation where Caroline is concerned. Has he left it too late, or can he convince her of the sincerity of his feelings before the secrets which would threaten Caroline’s life emerge and engulf her in terrible danger?

I started reading this after A Wallflower Christmas and honestly I really wasn’t into it at first. I was so disheartened because this was one of my most anticipated books of the year ✨ I aged ten years waiting for it ⏳ I love Alice Coldbreath so much, words can't explain. She’s my favourite historical romance writer after Lisa Kleypas and Ellen O’Connell.

I’m not sure what it was, but this book felt very different from her usual writing. The thriller and mystery elements didn’t quite fit, and the story’s development felt somewhat awkward and disjointed.

I have literally loved every AC MMC across her three series. Gervaise is the first MMC who didn't steal my heart right away. He has such a blasé, indifferent, and cavalier attitude about him. He is also the human form of a chimney with how much he smokes. I was repeatedly put off by the scenes where he asks the FMC if he can smoke while they’re in bed or having an intimate discussion. I wonder if there's some significance to it because he always asked to do it at pivotal moments.

As for Caroline, again like all of AC’s heroines, I loved her. She’s a strange mix of pathetic yet utterly delightful and likable. Her character is shrouded in mystery, with many questions about her past and her life before she runs off with Gervaise. For me, some of the questions about her relationship with her mother are answered, while others remain unresolved.

Unfortunately, I don't appreciate how the romance started. And it's all because of Gervaise. This man literally pulled a Benedict Bridgerton 😭 If you’ve seen Bridgerton 4, you’ll know what I mean “Sophie, be my mistress.” Bloody hell 💀

In a span of a couple of seconds, I went from this:

To this

To this

This happened around 24% and at that point, I was so done. So I stopped to do chores, cook, and eat and I came back with a full belly and a lighter heart 🌞💖

Around 50%, I kid you not, the tables turned. Caroline and Gervaise had me kicking my feet in delight. Gervaise turned into the ideal man. He falls first and falls harder. He notices Caroline's moods, and cares for her comfort. I love when acts of service play an important role in a romance story. I screamed into my pillow at the scene where Caroline drinks a little too much with her new friends, and he brings her a cup of tea 🍵, settles with it in bed, and tells her to sit between his legs and rest on his chest. Phew. I was gone.

At this point, he was fully redeemed in my eyes. Caroline, on the other hand, was the reason their relationship did not progress in the way most AC stories do. I did not understand her motivations for resisting Gervaise AT ALL.

I can understand why a well-bred woman like her might have no sense of self-preservation. After living with someone like her mother, who constantly paints her in a bad light to anyone who will listen, it is no surprise that she no longer cares about her reputation. That aside, her character still felt mostly inconsistent. At times she comes across as dense, and at other times she’s surprisingly perceptive.

I think one of my biggest gripes was the pacing of the story. The transitions between different parts didn’t feel harmonious. Coldbreath is known for writing long novels with sprawling scenes that cover the domestic moments of a couple settling into their newfound life. I really missed that in this book.

As for the ending, it left me unsatisfied. The revelations and development of the rest of the story felt a little lacking, predictable and even ridiculous to me. That’s why I can’t give it any more than 3 stars.

3.5 stars rounded down

Alice Coldbreath is one of my favorite historical authors, hands down. Her writing has such depth and I always move new releases up my list when they come out. I love that she’s put her books in KU too so that new to her readers may be able to try her more easily. The Reversal of Fortune series has some lovely aspects of her stories that I so enjoy to read, however I am not vibing with these books to the same degree I have her others. This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone. The start of the book does drop you into a scene with the h and characters from the first book, so it takes a second, but this story is wholly separate from the other. For those continuing the series, cameos are well done from the first book and also the author’s Prizefighter series.

Written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, the H does get jealous over the h even without drama. The H is experienced, with almost nothing of his past mentioned. The h is inexperienced.

Some tropes/themes:
☆ FMC with a terrible reputation (not a scandal…yet)
☆ MMC who’s kinda bored?
☆ Something fishy’s going on and hardly anyone questions
☆ MMC offers an escape for the FMC
☆ Some road trippin’
☆ Adorable kittens
☆ Playacting/roleplaying
☆ An ungentlemanly offer (SMH)
☆ Gin palace start-up
☆ Slice of that mistress life, sort of
☆ Female friendship bonding
☆ FMC is happy and blossoming for the first time
☆ MMC is down bad and obsessed
☆ He spoils her
☆ She unconsciously challenges him
☆ Proposal rejections
☆ Not using their words well
☆ Eventually a mystery with suspense and danger
☆ Charming side characters

The story starts with Caroline (h) at a neighbor’s house and sets the stage of how her mother is a psycho who makes it seem like Caroline is actually a viper instead. Caroline is rescued from an uncomfortable scene by the neighbor’s adorable and precocious son (who’s from book 1 in the series and just steals the show, though it is a little odd how this kid is basically the only one who sees what’s going down). Gervaise (H) also makes an appearance, but really comes on page in the next scene of him going to Caroline’s house for a dinner party with his best friends. A dinner party that takes a whacko turn when Caroline enters drugged out of her mind and sending her mother and another lady into faints. It’s a little confusing, but also sparks Gervaise’s interest enough to offer Caroline a way out of her unhappy life.

Thus the road trip begins and the foundation for their relationship starts being laid. I didn’t feel their chemistry at first at all. Gervaise was too aloof at times, also too into his smoking which I hate. Caroline was in a desperate place and she’s so uncertain for the majority of the trip over what awaits her in London. But she also starts warming up out from under her mother’s oppression. Gervaise also sees magic in her that it takes time for her to see in herself. Some of her passivity in the initial decisions regarding where she’ll go and what she’ll do make sense though, because of how she was raised. She has some great growth in finding her wants and voice later. Gervaise also has growth, but his trait of keeping things close to the vest bites him so hard in the ass multiple times and it was frustrating.

I loved how Caroline found a sense of belonging once they reach London. The side characters were esp wonderful in the found family context at the gin palace. I also appreciated how Gervaise would try to manipulate Caroline into wanting to get married and just be thwarted by how she’d respond and sidetrack him along with her. She embraced her potential life of scandal, though does experience moments of complicated feelings about it too. Meanwhile he’s trying to get off the back foot that his initial idiocy placed him and get a ring on that girl! Because of that, while there is plenty of steaminess, they don’t divest her totally of her innocence until very late in the story. Lots of experimenting in other ways.

Pacing-wise, I struggled with the story. It took long enough for me to warm up to Gervaise and Caroline that I didn’t find the best reading rhythm. The slice of life that I usually eat up in a Coldbreath book actually kind of dragged because I could see I was running out of pages, yet the mystery hadn’t hit yet either. I think it was a matter of the tension not building properly for me.

The mystery plot-line of the story was absorbing and yet, underdone. There are some breadcrumbs laid early on and a part that was the tipping point for Caroline that lit a fire under her to leave her home. Then, nothing but some bad dreams and misgivings until the end, when everything suddenly hits at once and is rushed through. Even their marriage gets caught along in the rush, which was kind of a shame given their internal conflicts over the topic. The more I think on it, the more I question parts of what was presented and want more information.

The epilogue is their HEA and is sweet. The complete resolution of the mystery is also summarized in the epilogue so while there’s some vindication (thank goodness) and Gervaise was bitterly punishing some people who’d been cruel to Caroline, I wish there had been another chapter before the epilogue maybe that had included some of the parts that were told vs. shown on page. I never regret reading a book by this author, I’m sort of sad that I haven’t found the connection for this series that I have with her others. Like all books, YMMV because some friends loved these characters and their story!

Full 5 stars and more if I could.
Perfection.
A sheltered heroine who is let out loose and is decidedly wanting to enjoy herself on her own terms.
And a hero who falls in love first and from early on is serious about their relationship.
He suffers because she is not ready to marry him.
And that’s just the main tropes.
Then there are host of lovely side characters and two very cute cats.
Plus a ton of great role playing, honest discussion, minimal miscommunication and the tragic scenes are not overly drawn out.

The best romance book of the year so far for me.

I fell in love with Gervaise, he started off pretty cold, distant, very arrogant and entitled yet really fast and without and prejudice figured his feelings towards our heroine and just went for it.
And I totally loved the Caroline’s courage and lack of any girlish shyness. She took life as it unravelled for her in courageous strides.

Note on language. I noticed words that were used in new ways that maybe was appropriate for the time or not, but it was really refreshing to read.

The way heroine revealed her own mystery through dreams was really cool and it resonated with me deeply since I’ve been having a lots of “prompting /symbolic” dreams.

“Are you going to let me tell you now, Miss Halperston?” he asked. “Tell me what?” she answered breathlessly. “What a conquest you have made of me.” “Yes, please do, Lord Atherton. I am all ears.” “Caroline,” he said, “I’ve never felt like this before. You are all I think about, all I care about. I don’t give a damn about anything else these days. I want to—to do things I’ve never wanted to do before. To make plans. Plans for us.” He paused and drew back when she said nothing.”

The only reason why Alice Coldbreath is not a huge best selling author is because she is publishing independently but she is on a level with Judith Ivory and Laura Kinsale for me.

I want to reread this already

Honestly, I would read AC's grocery list and love it.

I thought this story was so fun and sweet. AC departed from her usual set ups for this one and I was surprised. Caroline and Gervaise were so perfect for each other. Gervaise was so obsessed with Caroline. It was so rewarding seeing Caroline grow as character when she was around those who supported her. Gervaise was perfect for providing this environment for her. There were somethings in this story that weren't quite my jam but it fit for the characters.

3.5 stars. I liked this, but didn’t love it.

I think this story will be more enjoyable when I do a reread. I was very busy in the last few days, and had to keep putting it down, mostly reading in short increments. That always messes with my enjoyment of books, and there are many I have DNFd for similar reasons.

Overall, I think the start of the story was somewhat blah. I wasn’t a fan of the hero or heroine at the start, and it took me a while to warm up to them. Eventually though, I did really come to like them, the side characters, the cats, and the plot line. I do think this story did a little more telling, as opposed to showing, which imo AC typically excels at. I felt like many pivotal scenes were skipped, or rushed, especially towards the end. It got to a point where I felt there were too many sex scenes, too many scenes of the MCs talking in bed, and not much actually happening on page. I definitely felt like this book could have used a few extra chapters to actually have some of the ending events be on page. As is, the story feels incomplete to me, not fully satisfying, which is a bummer.

Still, I love Alice Coldbreath, and I enjoyed this book overall. I hate finishing a new book of hers and knowing that I have to wait many long months for the next one. 😢

Alice Coldbreath is one of my favorite authors and this was my most anticipated book this year. But, I'm sad to say, this is the first Alice Coldbreath book that I didn't like.

I really like the author's marriage of convenience stories, and assumed that this would be another one. Instead it had a mistress trope, which is a theme that I dislike, but I tried to get past my disappointment and give it a real chance regardless.

After a decent beginning, I ultimately lost almost all interest. Both of the main characters' personalities were pretty bland, and they were dense when it came to their relationship and the "mystery". The side characters and the setting were alright, but ultimately not enough to hold my attention, and I was forcing myself to read the second half of this book.

I still love a lot of Alice Coldbreath's other books and I'm willing to give her next book a chance, but I think Alice Coldbreath's writing style and themes have been changing for a few books now. I'm glad that she's writing what she wants to, but it's possible that her new books just aren't going to be for me.

I loved the first installment in this new series by AC, but to my dismay struggled with this one from the outset. If you’ve read her before, you know Alice Coldbreath does not write short novels. I’ve always found them just the right length though to drive the plot home in a very engaging fashion. At least to me, it was not so in this one.

Caroline and Gervais are an unlikely couple. She is running away from a malicious and controlling mother and he seems to be having a mid-life crisis of sorts. Cue in a love story of “he falls first”, punctuated by quite a bit of suspension of disbelief on what would constitute a plausible behavior for all characters involved. There is a fantastic slate of supporting characters and even animals though, but that just means that our mains are somewhat fading into the background.

The mystery plot was another suspension of disbelief, but everything got wrapped up nicely after all. Chalking this up to not my cup of tea, and will return for the 3rd installment!

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Alice Coldbreath. Every time a new book of hers comes out, I snap it up.

This book is quite a departure from her usual style. Typically, she leans into the marriage-of-convenience trope, followed by the development of intimacy. Here, it’s reversed - the intimate relationship comes first, and the marriage happens later.

I absolutely adored Caroline. I love how pragmatic and independent she is. Gervaise is a bit high-handed in the beginning, but when he falls-oh boy, he falls hard. It was such fun to read just how besotted he becomes with Caroline. It’s also refreshing to see the dynamic flipped, with him trying so hard to convince her to marry him while she’s perfectly content remaining his mistress. Caroline may be sheltered, but once she gets a taste of freedom, there’s no way she’s going back to a cage—even a gilded one (or, let’s be honest, especially one shrouded in “respectability,” which can be terribly dull!).

The mystery element is also quite well done.

Overall, I’m extremely happy with this book. Alice Coldbreath’s stories tend to grow on me with a re-read. 'An Inconvenient Vow' didn’t quite wow me the first time, but it has since become one of my favourites from her. On the other hand, the Vawdrey Brothers series is one I haven’t felt the urge to revisit - I found it a bit “meh” overall.

She has definitely grown as an author, and I truly hope my GR friends will continue to support her so she can keep writing! She is an independent author, so every support counts!

These two get along so well once the situation throws "convention" out the window.

Once drugged Caroline lets her true self out and snares the interest of the Earl of Atherton.

They take to the road, adopt some cats, and just make this read so pleasant you'll read it twice by the morning.

Some of my favorite parts of the this book is during the playful times when they recreate interactions that occur throughout the book that didn't live up to expectations or recollection. These two have such fun together.

10 outta 10 highly recommend.

Alice Coldbreath never ceases to amaze me! Each book she writes has such incredibly entertaining characters with their own unique personalities and quirks, and A Much Maligned Miss was no different!

It can honestly get rather tedious when you’re an avid reader, as so many heroines are quite frankly interchangeable from one story to the next, often regardless of author and genre. I have never once run into that problem with any of Alice’s series. Every time I start one of her many books, I wonder, how will she do it this time? Is she eventually going to run out of new and vibrant personalities? But within a couple chapters I already know, she’s done it again!

Caroline was a revelation! I loved her no-nonsense attitude and go-getter personality. She had already spent too much of her life stifled and subdued, and she would never be reigned in again! I found her lack of maidenly sensibilities a breath of fresh air, and I love when Alice writes another woman who isn’t shy when it comes to the bedroom. It was quite fun to see her shocking her man, instead of the other way round!

The dynamic between Gervaise and Caroline was absolutely delicious! I loved how Gervaise could pop off with a random and elaborate fib at the drop of a hat, and that Caroline was always game to his shenanigans. She even became an expert in her own right on how to tell fun tall tales. Their banter often made me giggle and squeal, truly one of the funniest pairings yet!

The imagination that Alice has never ceases to impress me. Not only can her mind conjure up new characters and narratives, but she usually sprinkles in a story within the story. And who knew I’d be so invested in the fictional lives of dolls! We see lots of our favorite side characters from her Prizefighter series, and of course darling (or devilish - depending on who you’re talking to) Teddy!

This book was well worth the wait, and I couldn’t be more happy with how the story went. I didn’t have any idea what I was getting into when I started, and I thoroughly enjoyed the wild ride! I think it’s time to start a reread of her Prizefighter series, as well as Jeremey’s book, so I can better appreciate A Much Maligned Miss when I start it again! (Very soon)

I usually enjoy anything by Coldbreath, but this was difficult to finish. It's probably a me problem. I'm not a fan of role-play and make believe, so the things I thought were cringe and annoying, others might think is sweet. Wasn't a huge fan of the FMC either. She came off as a ditsy Disney princess. Not once did she wonder who or how she was drugged?! Doesn't even think about it a single time, just goes on about her merry way. It was crazy, lol.

Looovvveed it!

Alice Coldbreath is one of my favorite writers. Her characters are always well rounded, relatable and their experiences always manage to give me that angsty gut punch I crave.

A Much Maligned Miss is the second book in this series amd while it's not necessary to read the first book to enjoy this one, I can't imagine why anyone would want to skip that absolute deliciousness. In fact, the first book is a constant re read of mine and I was worried nothing could be better than Jeremy and Emmeline.

This book was not better bit quite at par and I enjoyed every second of it.

It has a remarkably innocent FMC who basically dives headfirst into her new mistress lifestyle, a rake of an MMC who finds himself the voice of good sense and trying to curb her fall into sin, a situation where he falls first and he falls hard, wonderfully colorful side characters, Teddy Vance, mystery and an hea.

Can't wait to read more in this series.

I love Alice Coldbreath so much. Her books are always such a great read and A Much Maligned Miss was no exception. I love this spin off series from the Prizefighter series, Benedict is one of my favorite MMCS from them!! (yes even after all those famous fantasy MMCs) and after getting Jeremy's book I couldn't wait for Lord Atherton!!! It was just lovely.
The banter with Teddy (Jeremy's son) and Caroline was just so good. I love the humor in all of Alice's writing and just what fantastic imagining Teddy inspires. I think he reminds me some of Culbreath in the Vawdrey and Brides of Karadok series.
As always the set up in these books speaks to my soul although this one did not read quite the same way as the others. it followed a similar style which was perfect.
The characters relationship is so sweet and the slight thriller/suspense aspect was a perfect contrast.
I have reread so many of her books so many times... Her Baseborn Bridegroom, Unlovely Bride, The Consolation Prize, An Inconvenient Vow, A Bride for the Prizefighter, and A Substitute Wife for the Prizefighter all more than 3 times and I'm thinking I will probably be adding this one to that.

What a boring book! Lucky I gave AC three stars, only because I liked her other books and her writing is good. Took me five days to read this, it was so slow, it was hard to go back to. Plus I skimmed a good quarter of it.

I DNFed the first book of the series, Foolish Flirtation because I got too lazy and was not as engaged with the story. Luckily was not the case for this one!! Loved it and read it basically in one day. I love a road trip element in a historical romance, it was super fun to read and imagining them going to these inns and having to establish with each location their relation to each other (cousin, spouse, etc) was very entertaining. The cats ended up being an adorable addition as well. I am usually meh about pets in books but the way they were incorporated into the story felt very organic and charming.

I did not care as much for the mystery element of the story since I was so entertained by Caroline and Gervaise's relationship but his unwavering support for her when she figured everything out was super super sweet. I also liked that he was the one essentially begging him to marry her instead of the other way around and Caroline did not have an annoying reserved attitude towards sex. Her open mindedness despite being inexperienced was super refreshing in the historical romance genre where usually the heroine is super shy and the guy has to guide her through things (i hate that). I understand that might be the more accurate read of things but there's gotta be some variety!!

I have been reading Miss Coldbreath since 2021 and she has disappointed me only 2-3 times. Over the years her books have remained focused on  'domestic romance' but the writing has matured with time. Some of her books are immediate '5 star for me' but some move from 4 to 5 Stars on rereads.

This one is firmly in the 2nd category. I am sure it will become a solid 5 on reread.

This one has all the things that I love about Miss Coldbreath's writing. A self-centred, self- assured Hero who finds 'the girl' and tries to become his best version. He is jealous of everyone around her but still tries hard to control the jealousy for her sake. And a heroine who bounces back after every setback and tries hard to enjoy small pleasures. Some lovely side characters and vagaries  of everyday life.

What made this book special for me was the reappearance of 'Effie and Jeb' from the ' A bride for the Prizefighter'.

Oh, Ms Coldbreath you’ve done it again!

Ms Coldbreath does what she does best with this well written, well paced continuation of her Victorian Reversal of Fortune series. There is an exciting intrigue, murder, mayhem, a baddy in the guise of Caroline’s mother, a road trip to London and a coterie of supportive friends.

A fabulous story, full of spectacular personalities, both newly introduced and from previous books. I love her well drawn, delightful characters - Teddy is one of my all time favourites, so precocious and discerning.

Gervais and Caroline are an absolute joy! Gervais is a charming, unruffled and poised aristocrat who is delightfully unsure of himself with regard to where he stands in Caroline’s affections. Caroline is a mixture of insecurity and assertiveness to which Gervais is drawn. They have a wonderful rapport - their gentle humour, tenderness and bed time role playing adds depth and warmth to their relationship.

I was totally enraptured with this book and see it as a story I will be reading over and over again. I am now back at square one waiting excitedly in anticipation of Ms Coldbreath’s next publication.

I feel like I've been waiting for this book for so long and I'm so pleased it didn't disappoint.

I was so delighted to see Teddy and the gang again. It's not necessary to read the first book in the series, but I would recommend you do so you can appreciate what a treasure Teddy is, the loveable little rascal.

I fell in love with Caroline right away. We were previously aware that her mother was the absolute worst but WOW. This woman is a particular level of vile. Caroline tears out of Penarth with breakneck speed and an almost reckless energy that immediately endears you to her. Having never had an advocate or even a friend, she is unsure of how to navigate the budding relationship between her and Gervaise after he helps her out of a bad situation and boy, is she clumsy. In such an adorable and endearing way though.

Gervaise is as stunned by his desire for Caroline's affection and companionship as she is to the idea that people just *like* her when they haven't been poisoned by her repugnant mother. there is some miscommunication, which I usually hate but Coldbreath always delivers so I don't mind. I found myself laughing to the point of tears and wanting to weep at how alone Caroline has been. I loved seeing Evie and Jeb again and gladder still to see Evie stand her ground.

I didn't love Gervaise as much as I thought I would, but I think my feelings for him might grow upon te-reads and this will be one of my re-reads. this was a wonderful next installment in the series and I can't wait to see what Coldbreath comes out with next.

I was really looking forward to Caroline's and Gervais's story after A Foolish Flirtation, but A Much Maligned Miss didn’t scratch the itch. The character development and relationship development were all over the place. The plot too. And the spice wasn’t spicing. I don't know if I've changed or this wasn't one of Alice Coldbreath's best. Or, it could be that, while I don't consider myself a self-insert reader, it is hard for me to appreciate AC books if I can’t relate at least a little to the heroine, and I just didn’t here.

Caroline made no sense as a character. She's lived a sheltered life but she agrees to be Gervais's mistress so quickly. She's also really fucking dumb. I ended up skimming some because I just couldn't take being in her head and seeing how fucking dumb she was being.

Gervais, on the other hand, is a much more enjoyable character. All of AC’s heroes are such wife guys and Gervais is no exception even though Caroline isn’t even his wife yet. AC heroes also love to give head-check. They're also ususally pretty jealous, which I did think was missing a bit her. Like it was a missed opportunity that he didn't find Caroline posing for the artist and fly into a jealous rage.
Sidenote: I think if I was an earl I’d be telling people I didn’t have any money either.

Other things I enjoyed:
- Their banter about Miss Pomfrey and Captain Gerard
- The kittens
- The supporting cast of female characters (wasn't expecting a Jeb and Effie cameo and can't say that I enjoyed it)

Obviously I'm not writing off this author, but I really need the next book to be a banger.

I love AC. I loved Caroline so much but the deduction of .5 is because I don’t think it was super clear why she kept on rejecting the marriage proposal. It did become clear later on, but I think it took a bit to get there.

I loved the relationship in this book so much. I think Caroline was a perfect heroine. I also think that this may be the best MMC in the coldbreath universe second only to Toomes. This book had me laughing so hard, and I thought that all of the additional characters were so vivid and it was a very fun story. I also loved the romance. I thought he grew and it made sense.

At this point, reading these books feels like a cozy comfort! I liked being back in this world and thankfully liked this one soo much more than the previous book.

I enjoyed the usual hero who is somewhat aloof, then unsure why he’s doing these things for her, and then obsessed. It’s always fun to watch them change.

I also really loved how Gervaise was so angry with everyone who treated her so badly in her life. He really grew on me.

I liked Caroline a lot too, and was glad she took a chance and changed her own destiny.

Plus the cats were a fun addition!!

More review to come once I have a chance to think about it coherently, but absolutely highly recommended. Coldbreath is one of my favorite authors, and her books are comfort re-reads for me.

Here's what I posted mid-way:

This "to protect you, I must make you my mistress!" trope is one of my least favorite romance tropes. (Because squicky/imbalance of power/hard to believe it would actually work out well for FMC.) But the way Coldbreath is playing with the trope and with her two MC's, let me just say is both hilarious and sweet!"

I'll try to expand on this review soon.

Amazing read!

“He wanted to set her at the centre of his world and then organize his whole existence around her “ Loved how Grevaise fell in love with Caroline and portray of all characters was great. The funny bits with Miss Pomfrey and Captain Gerrard and how the story folds out was great. Alice writes so well that its hard to put the book down.

4.5. Rated R. Victorian Romance

Great book! Great characters and side characters including 2 cats. Interesting story. In the second half A bit more sex than most of her books. (Loved it)
My only complaint….the ending was too long. Yes a lot needed to be wrapped up but I would have liked it to be shortened. Dragged a bit.

2026 ATY Romance #51 a book published in 2026

I loved this. Caroline just made me smile and Gervaise was delightful. I totally enjoyed the cameos from the side characters from other novels. Effie and the other ladies were a total crack-up. And as always, Teddy stole the show. He is so great as a chil character and He steals every scene he is in. I have loved every one of Alice's books and enthusiastically await her next book.
