The premise:
Mackenzie is a hybrid, born to a human father and a werewolf mother. As a college student, she’s barely scraping by, and life is anything but easy. Hybrids are considered abominations with “broken genetics” and are treated accordingly. Hoping to improve her financial situation, she signs up for a clinical trial that pays $50,000. Applicants aren’t told what exactly is being tested to avoid influencing the results. A few years earlier, scientists developed a drug capable of controlling werewolf shifting, laying the foundation for peaceful coexistence between humans and werewolves.

When Mackenzie arrives for the application process, she discovers she’ll be completing the trial alongside none other than Ryken Storm, Alpha of the Storm Blood Pack and the last person she ever wanted to be trapped in a confined space with.
Ryken’s father despises the scientists and everything they stand for, believing werewolves to be the superior race. So why would his son, the future Alpha, volunteer for their experiments?

Years ago, Ryken’s father brutally murdered Mackenzie’s parents for breaking the pack’s laws against interbreeding between humans and werewolves, then cast ten-year-old Mackenzie out to fend for herself. What Mackenzie doesn’t know is that Ryken’s mother tried to save her, an act of compassion that ultimately cost her own life. Ryken has blamed Mackenzie ever since. Yet Ryken also knows his father’s hatred isn’t the future of the pack, especially as the werewolf population has been declining rapidly over the last decade.

After a tense “reunion”, Mackenzie and Ryken undergo physical examinations and interviews. They’re deemed compatible almost immediately and accepted into the trial. Mackenzie is thrilled by the opportunity despite knowing that participants who fail the experiment are never seen again.
Once they arrive at the research facility, all participants are paired up and of course, Mackenzie is partnered with Ryken. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they’re administered a pheromone-based drug that makes it impossible for Mackenzie to ignore her growing attraction to the man she hates.
What happens when the line between claiming and killing them begin to blur?

Thoughts:
I saw the cover and thought – Oh, this looks interesting! Then I read the blurb and was even more intrigued. After reading the excerpt, I knew I had to pick it up. And what can I say? This was a spicy, ridiculously fun time.

I devoured this steamy urban paranormal fantasy in just two days, sacrificing far too much sleep along the way. I was hooked almost immediately and became invested in the story surprisingly fast. It’s addictive, highly entertaining, binge-worthy, and unlike anything I’ve read before.
The writing is straightforward and easy to follow, making it effortless to get immersed in the story. As the plot progresses, the suspense steadily builds, and the action gradually takes center stage over what initially feels like a spice-heavy premise. That said, I would have liked the intimate scenes to be a little more descriptive and emotionally engaging, as I never felt a particularly deep connection between Ryken and Mackenzie.

Some of the trial scenes were a bit over the top for my taste, and I felt that several scenarios could have benefited from more detailed explanations to make them feel truly believable. This definitely isn’t a book you should pick up expecting intricate world-building, lyrical prose, or a deeply layered plot. It’s pure entertainment. The story is fairly predictable, but honestly, that didn’t bother me. Sometimes you just want a fun, over-the-top paranormal romance that fully embraces its own chaos, and that’s exactly what this delivers.
If you’re looking for the perfect palate cleanser between heavier reads, this is an excellent choice. The author clearly wasn’t trying to write a literary masterpiece. She set out to deliver an addictive, spicy, popcorn reads, and I think she absolutely nailed it.

The Hybrid Trials #1 by Jen Cooper

Okay… this one definitely took a little while to get going for me. The beginning felt quite slow, but around the halfway point it REALLY picked up, and suddenly I was racing through the pages trying to figure out what was going to happen next! 👀

The facility where the trials take place genuinely felt like a prison, and the trials themselves were brutal! The characters’ sheer will to survive was incredible, and I was constantly wondering who would make it through. 😳

And then those secrets towards the end?! 😱 I did NOT see some of those reveals coming at all!

Mackenzie’s deal at the end was absolutely genius, and now I NEED to know what happens next. That woman clearly has a plan… 👀

And can we talk about the attraction between Ryken and Mackenzie?! 🥵🔥 The chemistry was FIRE… even without the drugs! 😂

I will say, I struggled a little with how hostile some of the scientists were. It felt unnecessary at times and was a little off-putting, although I will give credit where it’s due because a couple of them definitely managed to redeem themselves.

But that last half? I FLEW through it. And then Jen Cooper decided to hit me with:

A slow start for me, but the second half had me completely hooked, with unexpected secrets, deadly trials, plenty of tension and a cliffhanger that has me very curious to see where this goes next! 👀🔥

I was not prepared to really like this book! The plot was interesting so I wanted to give it a try. When I started reading it had that "episode" feel to it. Those that read ongoing novels know what I'm talking about. Has almost a "choose your adventure" style to it where the plot twist are almost anticipated at intervals and plot holes are deliberately placed for unexpected misdirection. Even with all that I still enjoyed the book. The author kept me engaged when the plot started to feel like a country road with no exit. The build up could be improved but the plot is solid. Spice level was excellent! I would like to see a bit more variety. I mean these are paranormal being! Even metered down I still expect more from them. I'm going to keep reading because I'm invested. That's got to be one of the best compliments. The bones of this story are good. I'm locked in with these characters and I want them to win. Ryken and Mackenzie deserve a happy future. Also, I'm looking forward to knowing Viking and Hope's story as well.

This book was absolutely fascinating! I’ve literally never read anything like it. This author has taken the Alpha genre to the next level and with the massive cliffhanger of this book it doesn’t look like she’s hit the top yet! Mackenzie is a hybrid who has been kicked out of her pack. Ryker is the next alpha of his pack and his evil father has decided he will enter the Scientists trials and see what they’re trying to achieve with their new tests. Once there, things do not go as planned. The trials aren’t what anyone suspected, the volunteers are in danger and the trials aren’t what deadly. It’s turned into all out survival and they’re searching for answers that certain people don’t want found out. This book left me feeling and in definite need of the next book. I can’t believe how much has happened or what will come but I know it’ll be amazing!

I enjoyed this book it’s shifter romance, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, . The fmc is reunited with and ex pack who undergo an experiment for the summer because she needs the money to survive and he needs answers for his dad and Alpha. They get paired together and get made to do a number of tasks to test them in different scenarios etc. it’s love hate at first but things quickly get steamy and the mmc’s protectiveness quickly kicks in. They work together to get answers to secrets they uncover and the web of lies they get fed. Things het uncovered and things get dangerous. It ends of a cliffy so then series continues and I’m keen yo see what happens and where things go.

This book captured my attention with the cover art. Paranormal Romance, yes please! Enemies to lovers, Forced Proximity, violence, questionable medical experimentation, fated mates. A well rounded enemies to lovers story full of just about every conflict scenario one could think of. I’ll definitely be looking for the next book in the series.
