This fun, insightful children’s read blends fantasy with Christianity. Aden is a white horse with a red mane, different from the rest of his herd. He is driven to help other animals, and he is rewarded for that. Here, he follows his heart. His journey is based on showing love, kindness, and helping where he can. It mirrors Jesus’s path in a way that children and adults can understand. I found the message of bringing love and light into the world very uplifting, especially with the division and fear so common now. The end includes questions to help readers study the message further, along with an explanation of the story. This would be good as a family read or for children reading chapter books who want to explore their faith more.

The First Unicorn is meant to be a Christian origin story of the unicorns in counterpoint to Peter Beagle's The Last Unicorn, whicu it alludes to even if not in tandem with that work.

Readers will find the first 7% of the book dedicated to summaries, awards & accolades reviews, an economic of giving discussion and also reader reviews. As if that wasn't enough to fill a book, readers are treated to another 43% in the back, which covers A Message From the Author, a discussion guide and A Parallels To Jesus' Life along with a review request and/or share a photo, The Story Behind the Book (which I am sure appeared up front), About the Author and of other book listings.

The rest of the work was rather poetic and really fleshed out although it did seem like the story was rather repetitive in many ways. As a result the story became dull pretty quickly. Furthermore there were weird episodes where baby ducks were called goslings and other off editorial marks such as knowing human items that Aden would.not have ever come across.

Another thing, which may be more given the fact that NG has weird Amazon formats, is that the page was consistently interrupted with extra page numbers and header information. This was usually inserted in the middle of whole sentences thus causing you to chase down the next portion of thought.

The book did include some illustrations that were basically just uncolored pieces. And again due to format, they did not illustrate as they probably would have in the published piece while needing to be be clicked on to enlarge to be able to enjoy them. The characters are rather cartoonish in nature and don't really reflect the portrayal of Beagle's unicorns.

But the two main things that knocked this book for me were Christian-related. First the other animal characters would mention the name of their Higher Power but Aden acted like they were false gods. Honestly I think the argument could have also been these other names were the names of God just like Hagar mentioned in the God Who Sees Me (Gen 16:13). And the other aspect I disagreed with was including an episode in which one of the unicorns threw itself to death to help another before its faith helped give it its wings to save them both. First how do you allow an impressionable child read such a thing without having a deep discussion that God won't always answer prayers like this even if He is a God of Miracles? And secondly why did the fact that you should not test God (Mat 4:7) somehow miss its place as well.

All in all it was decent but not a top book ans one I wouldn't mind reviewing in its final format to see if it improved on the points that so took away from this initial review.

I hadn’t even finished reading the ebook before I ordered the physical book as a gift for my girls. If you’re looking for a heartwarming story about beautiful creatures, miracles from God and many parallels to the life of Jesus this is a great small chapter book that would be a comfort book for any and a great story to read with your children to spread the love of Jesus in a unique way using animals and stories of the first unicorn.

Aden was born a horse but obviously special from birth and he grew up showing kindness to all and taking any opportunity he can to help others whether horses like him or all other kinds of animals. He also has faith in his creator before he even knows God’s name and just chooses to trust in that feeling that he should trust what is being placed in front of him and the path that he’s on. As he continues this path as he grows one day an angel visits him and tells him about God and says as a reward he will receive a magical horn and is encouraged to continue to spread the word of Gods love and show courage and kindness and bravery no matter what. He is banished from his own herd out of their fear and distrust in his changed appearance and what it means and he begins to question if the gift is really a gift or a curse but soon finds himself in a situation where he uses it to help others and stops questioning Gods will and gift to him. After some time goes by and some things happen with his herd that caused me to get emotional they soon begin to trust in him and follow him and grow in their faith as well. As more continue to believe in Aden and his messages the unicorn beard grows and o my those who truly believe and want to spread the things God stands for are rewards with the gift of being a unicorn. “Blessed are those pure of heart for they shall see the unicorn.”

I found this to be so special and heartwarming and have the best messages about courage, bravery, kindness, grace and forgiveness and laid out in a way that would appeal so much to kids and spark great conversations. I found it engaging as well and am excited to get to read it again with my kids when it arrives and would love to purchase for others as well that are old enough to listen to a chapter book and grasp the story. This is a clever story told through animals. but parallels the life of Jesus Christ, focusing on his messages.
The theme of kindness, love, forgiveness, and acceptance run strong through the story.
Aden is an unusual colt with his white coat and red mane and tail. He is different from all the other horses in the herd. Every day he helps other animals in the forest who need rescuing, or just need a helping hand. He is kind to all, regardless of their differences. That in and of itself is a great lesson!

Soon, the rest of the herd shuns him and he spends more and more time in the forest alone, helping take care of others. When an angel appears and bestows upon his forehead, a golden glowing horn, because of his acts of kindness and love, his life changes. The herd, his family, rejects him and sends him away. Aden is sad, especially when his mother turns away from him, but he knows he must continue with acts of kindness and caring, and even performs miracles, healing wounded and feeding the hungry.

This message is shared throughout the story: "One day, when enough hearts choose love instead of fear... the light will no longer need to hide."

Oh, how this crazy world needs to hear and understand that message today. This is a beautiful story told in a way that children will relate to with the messages Christ taught. It is told in a relatable way that is not preachy, but honest and loving.

Content review: What a sweet story. Aden, the unicorn, is kind hearted, patient, empathetic, and forgiving character. As a mom, there are so many themes from this story that resonated with me. The main character has traits that I would want my children to read about and embrace as they grow older. I think the message is wonderful.

I do worry that not all readers would be drawn to the story because of the religious parallels. However the book reads like a fable, teaching life lessons that everyone should embody. Many chapters can stand alone even with a common thread through the whole story. This would be an easy book for a young reader because they will not need to remember every detail from earlier chapters to understand future plot.

One of my favorite side stories was of Buck, they seemed to lose their compassion after a negative experience with another animal. They let it define how they interacted with the world and all animals of that species. His perspective changes as he gets to observe how Aden approaches animals that are different to him. What a great lesson for humans to learn during this day and age

I really connected with Aden's journey. He doesn't fit in with the others, and what initially feels like a painful rejection becomes the beginning of something much bigger. I read this book to my kids as a bedtime story. My oldest loved it and listened along with my reading, she became so invested. We laughed together and cried together. I was so happy when she started to notice the similarities from Aden and Jesus. and loved the focus on Kindness to everyone, even if they don't seem like they deserve it. Kindness makes a difference. She would be disappointed in me if I gave this any less than 5 stars.
