Echoes of Destruction is a beautiful sci-fi fantasy story about new found friendship, humans blessed with godblood and magical creatures and relics.

I had a wonderful time through Gorbet's incredible world. Where it starts of fast paced, but for me slows down a bit when the world expands and more povs gets in the picture. Speak about pictures, I find it very amazing that the book is evenly spread with some pictures through the story. The artist really has done a fantastic job with them.

Every characters from main to side is exceptional crafted, and no matter which pov that came next. I was highly exited to read them. And what I love with books like this, is no matter how painful some parts are to read, the author shows how beautiful it still can be. With how the characters are written and everything ends up to be.

The only sad thing about this one, is that book 2 isn't out yet. There should be something done with that.

If you haven't read this yet, I think this is a book that would have been apriciated and loved by many readers.

🤯 RIP to my little grey cells
@wk_author wrote an incredible story that felt like being in a fun house mirror exhibit with the worst of humanity. That's a compliment.

Gorbet uses his scientific brain to create an exhilarating world of twists, mutations, and evolutions that are unique and mind boggling.

Not only does he give us one full novel, he also graces us with an action packed novella, that's basically the longest epilogue I've ever seen!

Hopefully Gorbet still thinks my pages of messages of guess, shocks and awes are entertaining 🫣

Anyways, enjoy!!!!

I read this as an arc, in exchange for an honest review.

My honest review? GO. READ. THIS. RIGHT. NOW!

I absolutely loved this book, and could not put it down.

The concept is fresh and original, and kept me turning the pages long after my eyes warned me they were broken!

The mix of sci-fi & fantasy really worked well for me, and was cleverly thought out. The little flashbacks give insight to how we got to the world we find ourselves immersed in, and I very much appreciated them.

The pacing was perfect and the world building detailed and rich. I felt for our characters, and hated the protagonist, who is such an ego maniac! Ikari was my favourite though, and he is beautifully written...but then so are all of the other POVs. The God relics are intriguing, and I am itching to see where the next installment takes us.. so please please hurry up W.K!! 🫣🤣

If you want something different, but with a familiar feel, then do read this, you won't be disappointed.. apart from the fact you'll have to wait for book 2, which is so unfair! 🤣🤣

I have this thing where the moment I sit down and start reading and it doesn't make me feel like I'm transported into another world, it won't get my interest piqued. I found the moment that I started reading, I was transported to a new world. I got to make friends and enemies. The adventure started. My emotions were all over the place and I wanted to save those I became close to. The colours were vibrant, I could reach out and touch everything around me. There was definitely one person I felt very close to and I hope that I will see him in future stories.

You know the old line "I'll go to bed after this chapter"? It didn't happen. I wanted to know what happened next. I wanted to know that those I grew close to were safe and did the enemies get punished.

I was going to say I won't add any spoilers, but I need to add that you will need tissues and something to drink. You might forget to get up to stretch and have a walk about because you want to know more.

The audiobook is just as emotional as the book itself. The narrator brings it to life. I am visually impaired and reading tires my eyes out (i have loved reading since I was a child and was given the option to listen to audiobooks, it's meant that I can continue to enjoy what I love and that is escaping to another world, another adventure, make new friends, save those around me and explore). The narrator's voice guides you into the story and becomes a voice for the words that you have trouble seeing.

This is a killer debut fantasy/sci-fi from W.K. Gorbet! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this one.

Right off the bat, you’re thrown into a living, detailed world. W.K. does a really good job of setting up, and building out the world of Ettia. The main plot takes place a couple thousand years after a big cataclysm reshaped the world, and it reads that way.

There is a whole cast of characters, and each of them is well-written and has something to do. Hikoshi quickly became a favorite of mine! Some of them are Godkin, people with godblood that gives them certain abilities. The creatures with godblood that roam the world are called Hexven, and the illustrations of them in the book are rad! If anything I wanted more Hexven!

I loved that there were interludes throughout the book—little chapters that take us into the past and fill in some blanks. There is a lot going on this book, and these helped me make sense of what was happening in the main plot.

There is a lot thrown at you at the beginning, and I’ll admit that I was a little lost for awhile there. But it was the good kind of lost—you know the kind where even though you don’t know where you are, you’re enjoying being there? lol I picked it up along the way and loved my time there!

And once everything clicks, it steamrolls baby! My buddy read partner Tyler was super helpful in setting me straight on a few things, and I’m glad he has a better mind than me for keeping track 😅

W.K.’s writing is great and I never felt bored during my read-through. Super excited to start the prequel novella 🙌🏻

Echoes of Destruction by W. K. Gorbet takes place in the mysterious world of Ettia, where a single moment changes everything. When a high-risk experiment involving the legendary CoreLight relic goes horribly wrong, it shatters more than just the powerful artifact. What should have been a breakthrough turns into a disaster that ripples across Ettia, stirring up old tensions and awakening forces that were better left undisturbed. At the heart of it all is Ikari, who finds himself caught in the fallout of the catastrophe in ways he never expected. As whispers of the ancient First Matter relics resurface, he's drawn deeper into secrets tied to the very foundation of the world.

What really stood out to me in Echoes of Destruction by W. K. Gorbet was the scale of the world-building and the layered plot. The author demonstrates the time and effort invested in writing this novel. The lore runs deep with such detailed histories, mythical beings, and ancient relics that feel dangerous in a very real way. It can be a lot for the reader at first, but once everything clicks into place, the world comes together in an immersive story you can't seem to put down. Ikari's development is also especially compelling as his character feels shaped by the world rather than just moving through it, and the supporting cast each has their own motivations and morally gray areas. The plot unfolds steadily, building tension piece by piece instead of rushing toward spectacle, which makes the bigger moments hit harder. Overall, Echoes of Destruction is the kind of book that rewards a reader's patience, especially if they love intricate fantasy.

My own thoughts:
Personally, I love this book. Read it a million times. Something about it just speaks to me specifically...

In all seriousness, if you made it this far, I sincerely hope you enjoyed your journey through Ettia. There are two 'editions' floating around, one with a cover with just the phoenix, and one with two boys. Long story. You'll know you read the right one if it is just the phoenix.

If you'd like to be added to the ARC or beta team moving forward for the rest of the series, feel free to reach out via my website, which has all contact info (https://www.wkgorbet.com/)

In Echoes of Destruction, the narrative is done from a multitude of perspectives, the most important ones (in my opinion) being Ikari/Silvius and Hikoshi/Konrad. This is a great element. The story follows both the heroes and the antagonist while clearly establishing their stakes and motivations. Ikari was my favorite perspective to read from, especially with the minor comedic relief he provides on the adventure.

In the world of Ettia, we follow along God-Kin, dive into First Matter Relics and how they impact the universe, and learn about the political climate settled around these mystical concepts. If you're looking for a unique piece of fiction that stands out in its own genre, then this book is an excellent choice.

The introduction to the story was absolutely wonderful and was an immediate attention grabber. Without revealing too much, peering into those slips of time helped propel the narrative forward while expanding on the established world-building. It's a solid blend of fantasy with some sci-fi elements, done very well! Speaking of world-building, that is another element that truly shines in this book. While there’s a lot to take in, the book includes a glossary for reference as needed, not to mention the gorgeous concept art scattered throughout. Kudos to the artist for excellent depictions!

One thing I wish I could have seen more of, which is more of a personal preference, is more vivid character descriptions. The characters have amazing personalities that truly set them apart and there are incredibly unique concepts could be enhanced with some cool sensory details. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed writing and have a huge soft spot for my boy Ikari ✿

Loved this story so much that I would grab a physical copy just to annotate. The fantasy genre is rather diluted right now and this narrative truly sets itself apart as a unique piece of media. I cannot wait for the next book. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the chance to read this wonderful story!

Echoes of Destruction takes a little time to find its rhythm, with pacing that can feel somewhat disjointed at the start. However, once the story settles in, it becomes clear that this is part of a much larger design—and following through the book is worth the patience.

What truly stands out to me is the richness of the world Gorbet has created. As the narrative unfolds, the separate threads begin to weave together, forming a compelling tapestry. That moment when everything clicks into place is an aha moment, bringing depth and clarity to both the story and its characters. But it does take some time.

The character work is strong across the board, but Ikari and Sylvius were particular highlights for me. Their arcs felt the most engaging and emotionally grounded, though every character contributes meaningfully to the overall story. Even the secondary plotlines add dimension, ultimately converging in a way that enhances the world and gives it a lived-in, believable quality.

The antagonist deserves special mention—truly someone you love to hate. Well-crafted and convincingly motivated, the villain adds tension and weight to the story.

I’m always impressed by the level of creativity it takes to build a science fiction/fantasy world, and this one is definitely intriguing. While this first installment focuses on laying the groundwork, it does so effectively, leaving me curious and eager to see how the saga develops in future books.

A promising start to the series.

Wildly creative. Addictive.

I don’t often read for escapism, but when needed, this is the type of rich fantasy world that fulfills the need. This is an impressive debut novel.

The prelude and first chapters catapulted my reading, so I recommend trying the sample to see if it’s something you would enjoy. Those pages give a wonderful introduction. I appreciated how the author provided setting and world info in a way that stayed relevant. There is a beautiful example of this in the very first paragraph of Chapter One, where the narration transitions from scenery to showing how it matters to the character.

I always want more of that! But I realize this is coming from my writer brain. I love the craft.

Also, I am drawn to alchemy (and that gorgeous cover belongs in my collection). As an alchemy nerd, if I detect alchemical symbolism, I’m hooked.

The frequency of fight scenes was more often than I needed, but that is a personal issue. Fans of Sanderson-style action would enjoy them! They also showcase the wonderful, magical beasts. The hexven entries and illustrations were a nice touch!

I loved the contrast between Silvius and Ikari, and I look forward to their interactions in the sequels, which I will gladly read.

Do yourself a huge favour and grab the audiobook version of this, the narrator Eli delivers an incredibly diverse set of voices and really draws you into the story. Whether it's bringing out the dark voice of a villian, the conflict in a character, bringing out some of the truly humorous lines or plunging you into the deep emotion or intensity of a scene.

This Sci-fantasy was very much new territory for me in terms of Sci-Fi or straight fantasy and it really took me on an adventure.

It's gritty and has deep emotional depth and it creates an incredible set of magic and creatures that almost makes you long for that world, however dystopian it might be.

My only drawback, which is self inflicted, is that sometimes I didn't remember everything about each character as the chapters jumped between characters but that's on me!

Please check this out, one of the best books I've read all year!

I almost feel like I'm saying this backwards, but I have to start with the ending—**what an ending!** It completely caught me off guard and left me desperate to know what happens next. It's one of those finales that makes closing the book feel almost impossible because you immediately want to pick up the sequel.

*Echoes of Destruction* is an immersive blend of dystopian science fiction and epic fantasy that creates a rich, layered world full of political conflict, ancient mysteries, and unforgettable characters. Set thousands of years after humanity's downfall, the story introduces a world where remnants of advanced civilizations exist alongside god-kin, magical creatures, relics, and powerful beings blessed with divine blood. The combination of science fiction and fantasy feels seamless, creating a setting that is both familiar and completely unique.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its cast of characters. Rather than focusing on a single protagonist, the story follows multiple perspectives, each bringing something valuable to the larger narrative. Whether they are leading rebellions, seeking redemption, pursuing revenge, or simply trying to survive, every character feels like they have an important role to play. Even those who spend more time in the background contribute meaningfully to the overall story, making the world feel alive and interconnected.

The world-building is outstanding. As someone who loves deep lore, I was completely invested in uncovering the history of Ettia and learning how its ancient catastrophes, divine beings, political struggles, and magical systems all connect. Every new revelation builds naturally upon the last, rewarding readers who enjoy piecing together larger mysteries and understanding how every element fits into the bigger picture.

The political tension is another highlight. The conflicts between competing factions and the growing rebellion create morally gray situations where it isn't always obvious who is right. I found myself constantly questioning which side I was rooting for, which added another layer of depth to an already compelling story.

Despite the scope of its world and its many moving parts, the novel remains engaging throughout, balancing action, character development, and world-building exceptionally well. It never feels like lore is included simply for the sake of exposition; instead, each new piece of information enriches both the plot and the characters' motivations.

A solid debut with an epic scale and ambition. Has a very JRPG flavor without the progression style. Cool sci-fantasy world with Aeon (gods) and cool magic based on races/lands. A coming of age story in one plot with a lot of political intrigue in a second. This world/series looks to expand considerably in book 2.

⚖️ Final RSQ Score: 7.25/10

A creative, ambitious, and emotionally rich fantasy debut that stands out for its originality and prose. While the world-building and structure could use more polish, the foundation is rock solid — this is an indie author to watch.

Review

Echoes of Destruction is, in a sense, a classic fantasy story with a sprinkle of sci-fi. It's the story of Ettia after it suffered a cataclysmic event that nearly wiped the entirety of the planet, only five regions survived. A god protected each one of the regions, and each region is heavily influenced by its protecting God. People who received powers from these Gods are called Godkin, but there's also plants and animals that received the God's energy.

The Premise and worldbuilding are quite unique, well thought-out and make up for a fresh breath on the fantasy landscape.

All of this makes for a World full of wonders. WK manages a very vivid style of imagery. While the general, more mundane descriptions do require a little extra love, the ones regarding worldbuilding, animals, plants, people, powers, etc, are incredibly detailed, vivid and evocative.

The pace and flow of the story improved immensely in this revised edition, and now the plot and story are clearer from the start. And that comes from a very interesting thing he did as a change from the original version, he embraced the megalomania of the villain from the get go. Now there's no mystery about who is doing what and how. The way he stopped tiptoeing around that makes for a much more compelling story, for we (readers) are aware from the start where all of this is heading.

But our characters doesn't, they have their own personal agendas, their stories and vendettas, some have burning hearts of anger, and revenge are their driving motor.

Other has a sense of survival and payback to kindness shown to them as their path. This character is our driving force throughout the book. His story is incredibly compelling, and the mysteries that surround him make reading him an always interesting proposition.

But I want to focus slightly on the last one of our Main Characters, a nearly ageless, immortal man, that's touched by the Gods, but who doesn't know what's his purpose in life. His story is very interesting and compelling precisely because he does not know his end-game, except for the fact that he does know where Ettia is headed if everything remains the same. He's a character that's our sense of responsibility towards others beyond oneself. I am invested in knowing his story, his past and what made him like this.

The surrounding cast to these three is well fleshed, and interesting, the characters don't feel paper-y, but well lived and driven by their own stories and agendas. I am particularly sad about one death...

WK managed to elevate his book by embracing the fact that it required to be revised and re-published.

As a debut work, Echoes of Destruction does a really good job in delivering with good prose, pace and flow. It delivers a story that's worth your time and that leaves you wanting to start book 2 immediately after finishing.

4.3⭐️

Disclaimer: This is an interesting one. A little backstory first.

I first read Echoes of Destruction in its original, first edition published form. And it was a fair book, about 3.6/3.7 ⭐️. As usual I've chatted with WK (the author) along the way, talking shop and about the book and what not. Anyone whose books I've read can testify I always offer insight, comments and points where things can be improved upon, that's just my nature. WK already had some gnawing feelings that the book could be improved upon, and finally decided to make a revised edition, taking some prior feedback from other readers and myself. Once he finished with it, he hired me to Beta Read it. It ended being more of a Developmental Edit than a Beta Read. I will review it nonetheless, my objectivity isn't compromised (or so I think 🤣).

Some debut fantasy novels show promise. Echoes of Destruction (EoD) kicks the door off its hinges, strides into the room drenched in lore, morally gray characters, layered timelines, philosophical tension, brutal violence, emotional devastation, & says, “Keep up.”

And somehow? Gorbet pulls it off.

This book challenged me in ways I genuinely didn’t expect. As someone playing “catch up” with many of the heavier fantasy series known for sprawling world-building, dense lore, intricate politics, & massive casts of interconnected characters, EoD fits that mold like a glove.

Ettia feels alive. Not simply because of its geography, factions, powers, or history, but because Gorbet writes the world as though it existed long before the reader arrived & will continue existing long after we leave it. Every character carries scars, motivations, regrets, ambitions, & convictions that shape how they move through this fractured world.

And the characters? Exceptional. Gorbet’s ability to juggle multiple timelines & deeply detailed characters—all with distinct voices, traumas, philosophies, & relationships—is impressive, especially considering this is his debut novel. Some authors struggle balancing two POVs. Gorbet practically orchestrates an entire symphony.

What struck me most, however, was the emotional intelligence beneath all the violence & spectacle. Yes, the action scenes are tense, visceral, & cinematic. But Gorbet is equally skilled writing quiet moments: reflections on regret, broken friendships, fractured families, & intimate musings on determination, loyalty, kinship, greed, & humanity’s pursuit of a “better world” no matter the cost.

The emotional punches landed repeatedly. Coming off the heels of reading The Road, I honestly didn’t expect another book to gut-check me this quickly, but here we are.

I loved speaking with Gorbet throughout the reading experience and catching glimpses of the heart and personal life experiences woven into Ettia and its characters.

I’m excited to dive into The Founding Sparks novella soon as I wait impatiently for Book 2!

I went into 2026 thinking it would be my "year of sequels", but many of the book two's I own are physical copies, and with a 6-month-old, it isn't happening. So instead, I've been back to the e-reader for some debuts.

Echoes of Destruction has some of the coolest worldbuilding I've seen in a while, that mixed with some dynamic characters and an overarching plot perfect at home with any fantasy lover, made this a fairly quick read all considered.

Without giving too much away, the title alone does a great job of setting up what to expect within its pages. Old "gods", younger "gods", and political machinations all swirl together, and very little of it is delivered through exposition, and the pieces that are tend to be handled deftly.

The magic system itself was interesting, and I'm excited to see if there is more explanation of the hows and whys of everything. Much of our cast is in the dark about the true nature of the world, and the one guy who seems to know basically everything happens to be a scheming Machiavellian figure.

Why is this a four (4.3) and not a five? Like with many debuts, there were some hiccups, and I'm willing to admit I might be part of the problem. (Several reading sessions were in the middle of the night, feeding my daughter.)

I would occasionally get lost in the scene, confused about the positioning, locale, or even which characters were involved when. Some of the latter is due to certain characters possessing the ability to teleport and alternate POVs not knowing them/defining them well.

While the world can be a bit gritty and unforgiving, there is a strong throughline of hope, and it feels like W.K. has a good handle on his voice, so I'm looking forward to continuing this series in the novella. (The Founding Sparks)

This is one of the best debut books from an author that I’ve ever read. The character arcs, emotional depth, gut punches, and world-building are all outstanding, and there are few authors that catch my attention this quickly for as long as this book did. I’d rank this author alongside Ian M. Banks for their talent in bringing a universe to life, and I can’t wait for the rest of the series to hit my shelves in the “Read” section. Fair warning, you will need tissues for several sections. I love all of the characters in the book, and cannot wait to see them develop further.

Echoes of Destruction is absolutely worth a read! I was given an advance reader copy of this book, and the world, premise, and characters in this story really drew me in. It follows Ikari, a gritty survivor with a mysterious past, who has his life changed by an act of altruism. To repay the kindness, he ventures on a quest with Silvius, a young pacifist, to seek out a powerful rare herb that can heal his benefactor. The two opposites venture through diverse lands and cultures in a world protected by old gods and their magic. The way these two grow and develop a friendship was really fun to watch.

While those two formed the emotional core of the story for me, I also loved Hikoshi, a rugged mercenary who is trying to restore his lost family, and Fulcanelli, an ancient scholar. Both of them work in their own ways to subvert the evil overlord, Alpha. Their supporting stories end up intersecting with Ikari and Silvius in surprising ways, and reveal so much about the world and its history. There is a lot to explore in this world, and so much heart in the characters and themes!

The mysteries unfold slowly, and the pacing is a bit uneven, but if you stick it out, you'll discover an engaging and charming story that leaves you itching for the next book.
