Port City is excited to be hosting the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys in the first Super Bowl in its fabulous, new billion-dollar stadium. Chuck McCrary's old friend from high-school football, Bob Martinez, is starting quarterback for the Jets. One week before the game, Martinez’s supermodel fiancée, Graciela, disappears in the middle of the night from the headquarters hotel of the Super Bowl. Martinez hires Chuck to find her, but won’t let Chuck involve the police. That same day the odds on the Super Bowl game change dramatically when someone bets a hundred million dollars on the Cowboys to beat the point spread. Is it Vicente Vidali, the New Jersey casino owner and mob boss? Did he kidnap Graciela? Chuck discovers that Graciela has a secret that places her life in danger, regardless of the outcome of the game. Was she really kidnapped, or did she run away from her own secret life? Martinez also has a dangerous secret that threatens to destroy his multi-million-dollar career in the NFL. To save Graciela’s life, Vicente Vidali demands that Martinez shave the point spread on the Super Bowl, so Vidali can collect on his hundred-million-dollar bet. Chuck’s search for the missing supermodel takes him from the dangerous streets and drug dealers of a South Florida ghetto to the waterfront high-rises and private island mansions of billionaires, movie stars, and crime moguls. Chuck must assault the mob boss’s mega-yacht, risking his own life to bring Graciela to safety. Then he must invade Vidali’s luxurious island mansion and take the fight to the mobster’s home.
Dallas Gorham is a sixth-generation Texan and a proud Texas Longhorn, having earned a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated in the top three-quarters of his class, maybe.
Dallas is also a reluctant Dallas Cowboy fan (Cowboy fans: You know how it is. But he has no choice… He’s named after them, sort of.) Like his fictional hero, Chuck McCrary, he now lives in Florida in a waterfront home, where he has followed his lifelong love of reading mysteries and thrillers into writing them.
Dallas is an active member of the Florida Writers Association and a Senior Affiliate member of Mystery Writers of America. He chairs the Central Florida discussion group meetings of the Florida Chapter of the MWA, because no one else will take the post.
Dallas, the writer, and his wife moved to Florida years ago to escape Dallas, the city, winters (Brrrr. Way too cold) and summers (Whew. Way too hot). He is also a reluctant fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Miami Dolphins. (NFL fans living in Florida: You know how it is. But again, Dallas has little choice since he now a Floridian.)
Like his fictional hero, Chuck McCrary, he lives in Florida in a waterfront home where he and his wife watch the sunset over the lake most days and where he has followed his lifelong love of reading mysteries and thrillers into writing them in his home office. He is a member of Mystery Writers of America and the Florida Writers Association. He also chairs the Central Florida annex meetings of the Florida Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America because he can’t get anyone else to take the post.
When not writing fiction, Dallas is frequent (but bad) golfer. He plays about once a week because that is all the abuse he can stand. One of his goals in life is to find more golf balls than he loses. He also is an accomplished liar (is this true?) and defender of down-trodden palm trees.
Dallas is married to his one-and-only wife who treats him far better than he deserves. They have two grown sons whom they are inordinately proud of. They also have seven grandchildren who are the smartest, most handsome, and most beautiful grandchildren in the known universe. He and his wife spend waaaay too much money on their love of travel. They have visited all 50 states and over 90 foreign countries, the most recent of which was Morocco, where their cruise ship stopped at Agadir (don’t bother).
Dallas writes a blog at http://dallasgorham.com that is sometimes funny, but not nearly as funny as he thinks. The website also has more information about his books. If you have too much time on your hands, you can follow him on Twitter at @DallasGorham, or Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/DallasGorham.
Carlos is helping his friend, a quarterback who is playing in the Super Bowl. You can't tell me that all the issues with the girlfriend when unnoticed by the press. Also, McCrary barfs when he kills one person but then goes in blazing and takes down a few more without a blink. And the cops hardly blink an eye regarding his trail of dead bodies. I think the character is just too vague and not defined enough. Also, once the kidnapping was finished, it was time for the book to be over. I felt like it just went on too far. Perhaps this would have been better as two stories. I did like the writing, to the point and just descriptive enough without getting boring.
I received a review copy from eBook Discovery and this is my honest opinion. This series is a dependable one that keeps the reader engaged and looking forward to the next in the series. There are terrific characters, natural-sounding dialogue, romance without graphic details, and a touch of humor. Everything I need and want in a good mystery series. I highly recommend them.
You know it's pure fiction from the beginning - the home team is fiction the city is fiction the stadium is fiction...and the Jets are the Super Bowl favorite...but it's GOOD detective fiction
This book was so long and I have to admit that the gambling and betting piece made my head swim. But I was determined to see it through but the professional football player was a total moron, I guess he took too many hits to the head.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great suspenseful and thrilling mystery that, while geared towards men with the football theme, will keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
To be clear, I am not a football fan, and I very much enjoyed this book. I read it all in one sitting, completely unable to put it down until the plot was resolved.
Gorham's writing style is easy to follow and he doesn't bog the reader down with statistics or football-speak that might alienate readers who don't really follow the sport.
I loved all the characters and thought they were excellently written. Chuck is great as the main character and I can see him starring in future novels, such as Alex Delaware for Jonathan Kellerman, etc.
Even if you're not a football fan, if you enjoy a good mystery/thriller, then I can definitely recommend this one to you.
