J. C. Cole is a Pacific Northwest novelist whose stories pulse with the spirit of Seattle and the emotional weight of memory, identity, and belonging. As a school teacher, he writes with rare empathy and authenticity, creating characters that feel startlingly real. All within a small pocket of time and geography this singular lighter intersects with lives in profound and mundane ways. I truly enjoyed the premise of following the path of a simple lighter. Each chapter almost acts as a short story but they are all tightly tied together through the lighter. I had a little trouble keeping stories/characters straight, especially when it was clear that they were intersecting. It made me want the print version to be able to more easier flip back and forth.
