Autumn in Stone’s Throw, Michigan, is filled to the brim with hot apple cider, chunky pumpkins, and football rivalries. The entire town is gearing up for Homecoming festivities against rival Hemlock Pond, bringing together old friends and new, to the Lake Michigan town.
With the support of her loyal (and cheeky) dog, Martin Short, State Park Ranger Maudy Lorso is determined to keep her head above water. She’s running for local office, tending to a burgeoning relationship, and scrounging to keep the park’s doors open. Already trying to mend a rocky relationship with her best friend Eli, things take a darker turn when his childhood friend, State Senator Paige Ramos, is found dead on his front porch on Halloween night. As secrets surface and old bonds fray, Maudy’s not sure who she can trust.
Stone’s Throw may seem like a postcard-perfect coastal town, but someone is hiding a much larger plan, and they’ll do whatever it takes to keep it buried.
Author Eloise Corvo finds inspiration and peace of mind while skulking around her home library which her husband affectionately (?) says embodies an "Edgar Allan Poe meets Applebee's" aesthetic. Eloise has short fiction published in literary magazines like The Corner Bar, and her debut novel is set to release on April 29, 2025 through Level Best Books. She loves mint chocolate chip ice cream, appreciates a good puzzle, and is terrified of clowns. To learn more, visit EloiseCorvo.com.
I received a free copy of, Tunnel Vision, by Eloise Corvo, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book two of two in the A Stone's Throw series. Maudy is a park ranger in Stone's Throw, Michigan. Its autumn and there's been a murder. Fall cozy mysteries hit differently then regular cozy mysteries. This was a nice read.
This was a really cute read! I loved the cozy small town vibes of this and the Halloween/fall atmosphere. I really liked the close knit feel of the small town, however I wasn’t super connected to the characters (I also didn’t read the first book so that may be why) and I felt like the mystery was pretty easy to guess what was going to happen but it was still a nice palette cleanser read!
It is both Halloween and homecoming week in Stone's Throw, Michigan and there are both tricks and treats in store for park ranger Maudy Lorso. This is the second book in the Stone's Throw Mystery series and if you haven't read the first book that is okay, the second book can stand on its own, but you are really going to want to go back get caught up before book three comes out.
Some people can't see the forest for the trees but Maudy, a state park ranger can see the beauty of the trees and all that the forest has to offer. She has been fighting the good fight against a shrinking budget that has become a line item that is about to be redlined. It seems that only state senator Paige Ramos, stands between the financial chopping block and job security. Senator Ramos is a high school friend of local chef, Eli Nett. Eli, who, until he revealed his feelings for Maudy, was her ride or die guy friend. Now things are just awkward, but not so awkward that Maudy would ever believe that Eli was capable of murdering Paige. That's right, the Senator is the victim. While everyone else seems to have tunnel vision, Maudy does what she can to get to the bottom of the crime.
Was the killing politically motivated, perhaps the mob has resurfaced in the area after all these years. With the renovation of the marina we get to learn about some very interesting Capone gang history and a secret hideaway that doubled as a maternity ward with a few extra secrets. Yes, I looked it up and yes, it existed. Another possibility is that the murder was a case of mistaken identity, and not politically related.
Speaking of politics, Maudy is running for the open position on the city council. I think that it is great that we get a main character with some anxiety issues who is still willing to face off against well backed adversaries who seem to be obsessed with making Maudy look bad. It is easy to relate to Maudy and her ever increasing stress levels. She is working so hard to make the park financially self-sufficient, trying to repair her friendship with Eli while also giving time and attention to her out of town realtor boyfriend Jeremy.
There is definitely something more going on than meets the eye and once again there is a good bit of thriller aspects as the reveal is rolled out. I could not put the book down. I kept guessing and second guessing and was very happy with where the overall plot is at this point. Now I will try to wait patiently for book three because there are still questions that still need to be answered.
Tunnel Vision: A Stone’s Throw Mystery by Eloise Corvo is a character-driven cozy mystery that balances seasonal charm with underlying political and interpersonal tension. Set in the seemingly idyllic town of Stone’s Throw, Michigan, the narrative leverages its autumnal atmosphere, homecoming festivities, small-town traditions, and lakeside familiarity, as a contrast to the sudden disruption caused by a high-profile murder.
The story follows Maudy Lorso, a state park ranger navigating multiple overlapping pressures: a local political campaign, a developing romantic relationship, and the operational strain of keeping the park afloat. This layered personal context strengthens the narrative by embedding the central mystery within a broader framework of responsibility, community visibility, and emotional vulnerability.
The inciting incident, the death of State Senator Paige Ramos on a familiar doorstep, functions as both a narrative catalyst and a destabilizing force within the town’s social fabric. As Maudy investigates, the novel gradually exposes fractures beneath the town’s polished surface, particularly through strained relationships, buried histories, and shifting trust dynamics.
A notable strength lies in the tonal balance: the inclusion of Maudy’s dog, Martin Short, adds levity and warmth without undermining the seriousness of the investigation. This aligns the book firmly within the cozy mystery genre while still maintaining narrative momentum and stakes.
From a market positioning standpoint, Tunnel Vision fits effectively within cozy mystery and small-town suspense readerships. Its blend of seasonal atmosphere, community-centered storytelling, and accessible investigative pacing makes it well-suited for readers who prefer character-first mysteries with emotional depth and a steady unraveling of secrets.
Cozy meets thriller in this delightful mystery that puts the fright into Halloween. Tunnel Vision blends the right touch of spooky small-town vibes with murder during the scariest holiday of the year. A fun book to get lost in, with secret tunnels and a haunted hayride through the woods, it’s a perfect read for lovers of the fall season.
Author Corvo uses her environmental background to good advantage in the creation of Stone’s Throw National Park featuring Maudy Lorso as a park ranger organizing a Halloween-themed hayride through the park as part of a Homecoming celebration. The historic clubhouse on the lake, its tie-ins to bootlegging, and the basement tunnels add to the ambience. At the start of the book, Corvo drops the reader right into the scene with her descriptions of children in costumes on a scavenger hunt in the forest and their quest for candy on the town’s decorated streets.
Charming and quaint with a twist when the night ends with a body on the porch next to a bowl of candy, the story takes on a macabre tone when it is discovered the victim, Senator Paige Ramos, was poisoned. As part of a homecoming weekend, Paige was in town for a school reunion and was staying with an old friend, Eli Nett, along with three other school buddies. Eli’s neighbor, main character, Maudy Lorso, who wears many hats (park ranger, candidate for town council, amateur sleuth), investigates Paige’s death at his request. It turns out that Maudy’s best friend and wannabe boyfriend, Eli, is a suspect in her murder. The tension between Maudy, her current boyfriend Jeremy, and Eli takes on a greater intensity amidst the drama enfolding with Eli and his houseguests.
What starts out as a charming school reunion turns dangerous as a killer pursues victims during what was supposed to be a fun holiday weekend. The suspense ramps up with a Halloween hayride through the wooded area of the park where plastic monsters morph into real-life horror. With her sidekick, Martin Short (her lovable pup), Maudy puts an end to the mayhem. Highly recommended for fans of Halloween and mystery lovers!
This is a well-written book with good characters and really good scenery. But, did I like it? No. Yes, I gave it four stars, mostly because it is a good story. But it was a little too dark for my taste. I *thought* it was a cozy mystery, but some places are promoting it as a thriller and I’m not a huge fan of those.
The good points: I loved the little dog, Marty. And the Prohibition Era tunnels are brilliant! The interaction between Maudy and the other characters is done well–both to her advantage and her detriment. I especially liked her relationship with Eli and how that came together. Maudy is a park ranger who has her hands full trying to come up with funds to keep the park open, but it’s not an easy job. And all this while running for town council. But someone is trying to sabotage her race. Meanwhile, the entire town is gearing up for homecoming during Halloween festivities so there is a lot going on. Including the murder of a state senator on Eli’s porch. And the attempted murder of another friend, Wesley, and even Eli. And so much more. The ending was satisfying but very dark for me. And there is a huge thread left dangling so we know there will be more to come on that plot point in following books. All-in-all, a decent enough read, just not my cup of tea.
Ranger Maudy Lorso is a spunky heroine, loyal friend, and devoted protector of her adopted Michigan town, Stone's Throw, and its surrounding state park. In this second installment of Eloise Corvo's Stone's Throw mystery series, Maudy has her hands full with Homecoming week and a campaign for town council that someone is trying to sabotage. The author does a great job of evoking the Halloween season, including a setting with a renovated mansion that once belonged to bootleggers, complete with tunnels leading into town. Just after the Trick or Treating is over, State Senator Paige Ramos is found dead, and Maudy's estranged friend Eli is accused of murder. He asks Maudy to help him clear his name. Unfortunately, a lot of signs point to either him or one of three friends who were visiting him at the time of Paige's death. They put together an elaborate scheme to catch the killer on a haunted hayride through the park... but things go terribly wrong. Once again, Maudy finds herself in a fight for her life. Part mystery, part thriller, Tunnel Vision will keep the reader turning pages.
Tunnel Vision: A Stone’s Throw Mystery by Eloise Corvo is a cozy mystery that blends small town charm with escalating suspense beneath its picturesque surface. Set against the autumn backdrop of a Lake Michigan community, the novel follows park ranger Maudy Lorso as she balances personal challenges with a shocking local murder.
Corvo effectively contrasts the warmth of seasonal traditions, community gatherings, and light humor with darker undercurrents of secrecy, betrayal, and political tension. The discovery of a state senator’s body raises the stakes, transforming what begins as a quaint setting into a web of suspicion and hidden motives.
With a relatable protagonist, a loyal canine companion, and layered interpersonal dynamics, the story offers a satisfying mix of character driven mystery and atmospheric intrigue. It will appeal to readers who enjoy cozy mysteries with a slightly darker edge and a strong sense of place.
I really liked being back in Stone's Throw, Michigan with Maudy. Things are weird between her and her neighbor/best friend Eli, but when one of his visiting friends is murdered, Maudy knows she needs to figure out whodunnit (and cross her fingers it isn't Eli himself). I love the setting, a small lakeside town with a national park with a bunch of customs and nosey neighbors. The mystery was interesting even if I did figure it out before Maudy. I didn't have all her anxieties and concerns on my mind. It was really fun to see how the town has changed and how it hasn't since the last murder rocked the place. I liked the relationships developing and I still hate Jeremy. If you liked the first book in this series, you'll probably enjoy this one as well! We even get to hang with Marty the dog and Gumbo the cat for a bit.
*Thank you to Level Best Books and NetGalley for the eARC. All thoughts are my own :) *
Or me, there's nothing better than Autumn in a small idyllic town. In Stones Throw, Michigan, residents are getting ready for all the homecoming festivities and Maudy is happy to be involved. Maudy is a park ranger who takes her job seriously, even while she's trying to mend a fractured friendship with Eli, and navigate a new relationship.
Things go horribly wrong when Eli's childhood friend, State Senator Paige Ramos, is found dead on his front porch on Halloween night. Maudy can't believe Eli is the suspect, there's no way he would have hurt his childhood friend.
This second book in the series is a delightful read, especially with her canine friend and sidekick Martin Short.
Tunnel Vision is a cozy mystery with builds to thriller. Stone's Throw, Michigan is not only gearing up for Homecoming but let's throw in some Halloween horror. Senator Paige Ramos is found dead. Park Ranger Maudy Lorso is fighting to keep the parks open while navigating her rocky relationship with best friend Eli. She did not need a body and murder to solve. Will she uncover too many secrets in her small hometown? Who can she trust? I received an Advanced Copy through Netgalley. A review was not required
Tunnel Vision is Book 2 in A Stone's Throw Mystery by Eloise Corro. I love holiday and seasonal stories. Maudy and her dog, Martin Short are a crime fighting duo. Maudy is running for City Council against Colin, but, someone is messing with her signs. There is a murder at her "old" boyfriend's porch. Amid the pumpkins and hot cider is the campaign and a murder investigation. I found this story to be an interesting book with surprises and an unexpected ending. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Maudy Lorso is a state park ranger in the small Michigan town called Stone’s Throw. During their traditional homecoming festivities State Senator Paige is dead on her friend’s front porch. That is how this cozy mystery starts out. Join Maudy and her friends as they unravel this mystery to find their suspect! I love me a good mystery and I LOVE cozy reads so this book was perfect for me. There were parts that were maybe a little too cheesy for me but overall I really enjoyed the story line and characters!
I just love the Stone's Throw series. Cozy small town mystery with fabulous characters. I figured it out pretty quick but that didn't deter from the enjoyment even a little.
Full disclosure - I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
