A Lord of Valor

Rate this book
Baron Luke Maxwell is used to being alone. In fact he prefers it. Coming from a troubled family life, Luke finds joy with his best friend, John, at the Merritt’s Rosecrest Estate. The only issue? John’s little sister, Clara. Lady Clara Merritt is the epitome of popularity. Everything about her terrifies Luke … or so he wishes to believe. Eventually, he begins to wonder if his quickened heart and turning stomach might mean something else entirely. Not that it matters. Genre: Historical
Tropes: Opposites attract, friends-to-lovers, he falls first, age gap
Setting: Regency period (1798-1811): Rosecrest, London, Spain
Writing style: Dual POV, 3rd person, past tense
Tone: Complicated, melancholy, despondant
Character- or plot-driven: Both

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 mouth kiss mildly-moderately described over two decent-length paragraphs
• 2 mouth kisses minimally described
◦ 1 over one sentence
◦ 1 over one paragraph, leaves them gasping for air
• 2 mouth kisses barely described
• 1 near-kiss with build-up; a few paragraphs
• 1 thought of kissing, half a sentence
• 2 barely-described mouth kisses between husband and wife
• 1 mouth kiss without description
• 1 desire to kiss, no description
• 1 reference to imagining kissing someone, 1 sentence
• 1 instance of physically flirting, looking at lips, hand kiss
• 1 hand, 1 head, and 1 cheek kiss with zero description
*See caveats below

Sensitive aspects:
• Sexual assault in chapter 12 – details do not go beyond kissing, and as far as I could tell since I skipped over, it’s light on detail
• Death of an important character
• 1 line of vague innuendo by the unscrupulous character, who in another instance draws circles on her back that cause shivers
• 1 instance of staring at male protagonist’s flexing arm muscles

Favorite aspects of the book:
• The love the Merritts have for Luke, including him as another family member
• Clara’s parents playing matchmaker initially
• The moment when Luke meets his stepfather, who eschues a handshake and instead gives him a big hug, which his mother and siblings join in on

Be ready for a lot of ups and downs. The narrative covers a lot of ground, and while the greater part of the book spans a couple years, there are at least a couple chapters each set in prior years. There were some points where I was worried Clara was going to come around to Luke out of guilt for being the source of his pain and not reciprocating his intense feelings, but thankfully, that is not how it happens.

Luke’s love for Clara is sparked by her neverending care and love for those around her. She tells him that her purpose in life is to love people, and she acts like it. She is constantly giving, helping, visiting, providing, and supporting. Anything she can think to do for someone else she does.

Luke’s awe of her as a person makes her liveliness, talkativeness, and hypersociality entrancing. Her thoughts, ideas, and experiences matter to him. When he encounters a woman in Spain with all those same tendencies, it irritates him to no end, because he doesn’t care about her. It goes to show what you can not only endure but even appreciate with the right person.

At the end of the book, there are a couple pages of “questions for the author,” and I so appreciated the acknowledgement of how being quiet and reserved isn’t something that needs to be escaped, that you can be just as strong and confident as people who are more open and expressive.

____________________________________

She was so knowledgeable in some areas and so naive in others.

A common scenario.

“Why are you so afraid of people?” “Why are you not?” “Because I love them,” she answered matter-of-factly.

You can love people and still have anxiety around them.

Sparing a glance at her beautiful face, he saw dark, purple and black swirled bruises painted across the majority of it. That was all your doing, his brain insisted. She is hurting because of you.

That is quite literally not your doing. You didn’t hit her.

She needed to kiss him, to allow herself a final chance to discover her true feelings.

This kind of thing in novels really annoys me. That doesn’t tell you anything. It could signal attraction or just enjoyment of the action. It doesn’t tell you whether or not you care for the person in that way.

“You do not love me.” His voice cracked as he lowered his hand. “That is not true!” she argued. “You are like a brother to me!”

I really appreciate the acknowledgement that friendship is also love. Usually in such a context, it gets framed as “I don’t love you,” when really it’s a difference between kinds of love: “I don’t love you like that.”

Of course Luke sent the cook. Even when he is not here, he cares for you, her brain scorned, and yet you treat him as if he means nothing to you. You accepted his love and never gave any in return. You couldn’t even—

You owe him gratitude, yes, but gratitude does not mean reciprocating that kind of love and certainly doesn’t mean marrying him!

She could probably even convince him to fall in love with her, if she tried. You did it with Luke, her brain reminded her, without even trying.

Which means you didn’t convince him!

The rocking ship caused John to be sick in his wooden bucket. Luke’s stomach lurched as well, but if it was from the smell or his depressing thoughts, he could not tell. Why didn’t she want me? he wondered for the millionth time. Why wasn’t I good enough? His stomach twisted with enough anxiety, he took the bucket from his friend, adding his own distasteful splash.

It’s not a matter of being good enough. You can care deeply about someone and not have romantic feelings toward them.

I have loved you forever, but I feel so stupid. All this time, pining for you, when you have never even seen me as an option.”

You knew that! You have no one to blame but yourself.

Favorite Quotations:
• The grey stone walls entrapped all sounds and light, making one feel as if they were being buried alive, and as each minute passed, one sank into the earth deeper, deeper, deeper…
• “I think people bring meaning to life.”
• “John really is going to kill you,” Clara whispered as she took his arm again. “Will you say something kind at my funeral services?”
• The wave of grief hit her again, knocking her into the stormy sea of sorrow. The current was strong, and tossed her repeatedly under the water, leaving her gasping for air.
• “Have I told you about the woman I met in Spain?” “Woman?” Clara’s hands remained on his cravat. It was unclear if the lingering hands were done out of endearment or because she intended to strangle him.

If you are looking for a Regency novel that will have you tugging at your heartstrings and filled with yearning then you definitely need to check out A Lady if Valor! I must say it has been a while since I have read a regency novel that had me bent over with so many emotions! There is an even balance of heartbreak and love rekindled that by the time you finish the story you will be satisfied with how everything turned out!

We are introduced to Luke and Clara who have practically grown up together so one would expect for them to easily to automatically tie the knot when the time comes right? That is not the case our poor mmc Luke is a bit on the shy side and committing to taking the next step does not come easy. Our dear fmc Clara doesn't seem to know what she wants to do with her life as well.

Will these two find a way to figure out what rhey want in life and proceed to take the next step?

This book had me glued from the start. I loved getting to see Luke and Clara’s story play out from the get go. My emotions were all over the place as their story played out. Happy, anxious, sad, all of the emotions in one book. The deep love that Luke has for Clara is so sweet and pure. I truly enjoyed this story and I can’t wait to read John’s story! I received an advance review copy for free, the thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received a digital ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is my second time reading this author's work, but the first full length book. I loved the title and cover, as well as the majority of the characters. Enough so that I'd be interested to read John's story which is set to be book 2 in this series. This one takes place from 1798-1811 which is more Georgian era than regency.

I enjoyed that the storyline was a he falls first. I think it did well at illustrating how a quieter personality can be a good balance to a very social one. The Merritt family was wonderful, warm, and loving. I personally love supportive parents in novels and involved ones, which wasn't the norm in that era. I think the novel did a good job showing how integrated into the Merritt family Luke was. I think due to that, the amount of alone time the two main MCs have is more believable and really showcases how protective of Clara Luke was.

I didn't feel either main MC had much exposure, relationship wise, to anyone other than each other. However, that was explainable given the reserved nature of Luke and the delayed come out for Clara. I wasn't really clear on how Luke and John met or why Luke begins spending summers with the Merritt family.

Recommended if you like Georgian era with a more modern feeling story, supportive parents, childhood friends to lovers storylines, he falls first, reserved male MC, brotherly supportive male friend MCs.

If this were the final work, and not an ARC, it would likely be a 2* read for me because it was ok but has quite a bit that could be edited to make it better (noted below).

There are some minor errors or things that didn't line up:
On page 7 the first paragraph of the book already had me confused. "Luke Maxwell thought as he rolled through a grove of cedar trees." I immediately thought Luke was rolling on the ground, instead of the carriage he was in, rolling through a grove.

"Cara flawlessly poured tea" when it should be "Clara" pg 11

The two main males are 12 years old at the beginning of the book but it says "they were now in their teen years" and "young teenager casually chatting with his friend" on pages 16-17 which isn't accurate since that begins at 13.

"You went to the Rosecrest to observe a lord." shouldn't have "the" pg 23

"A pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Sir Leopold." should likely have said "make your" pg 48

"The butler to passed the envelope to Luke." shouldn't have "to" before passed pg 68

"Let them think I am a big hussy living with my bethrothed." pg 77 [hussy was used in that time period but seems strange coming from the daughter of an earl who would have been raised with very strict speech]

"Luke sent down his quill." should be "set down" pg 134

"Very, good," her father replied. Why does it have a comma after very? pg 141

"how are you fairing?" should be "faring" pgs 153 & 210

"a strand of pinky pearls" should be "pink pearls" pg 156

There are things that are too modern for the time period it is set in:
I found it hard to believe a countess would refer to her husband, an earl, by his first name, especially a shortened version of his name, in front of a dance master. "Matt" pg 21 [she also uses Matt on pg 66 but that is during a family dinner setting so potentially more believable.]

On pages 37-38 the behavior seems completely out of character for a countess, even a demonstrative loving one. "The boys are home!" Lady Maxwell yelled. [This is a typo, as it is actually Lady Merritt but also very unbelievable behavior]. "The countess rolled her eyes at her son's rather useless reply." "you better come down here and try that again!"

"She could be silly or vulnerable or ditsy" pg 60 Ditsy was not a word used until after 1900, more than a hundred years after its use in this book.

"Mother butted in." pg 67 American slang that wasn't used until the late 1800s

"sassy/sassily/sassiness" pg 50, 77, 165, 183 American English not introduced until 1833 after the time period of this book

"like one would hold a steel guitar," pg 217 this instrument wasn't invented until 1885, after the time period of this book

"Sorry, buddy," Luke answered pg 220 American slang not introduced until 1850

“I have already chosen you in every room, in every circumstance, in every thought. I love you, Clara Anne Merritt. Only you. Now and forever.”

This fantastic story by a new to my author combines best friend’s sister, friends to more, and opposites attract. It is filled with family, deep emotions, and yearning. It is such a well written story. I was completely invested in these characters and read almost the whole book in one day. There were so many tender and even heartbreaking moments that brought me to tears.

Luke is determined, tender, and protective. I loved that even though he kept his feelings for Clara hidden, he wasn’t afraid to let his emotions show around her or her family. I loved that Clara’s happiness was so important to him and that he was willing to do anything to ensure her happiness. I loved how connected and supportive Luke and Clara were. I loved his friendship with John and Lord Merritt. I loved his time with his Mother and siblings too! Clara is sunny, caring, and friendly. I loved how much she loved people and how easily she made friends. I loved how close she was with her family and the amazing friendship she had with Luke. I loved her strength as she faced unforseen circumstances and when she stood up for what she wanted. I loved how Luke loved her through her struggles and helped her to find her joy again. Luke and Clara may have had a long journey to their happily ever after but it was so worth it. I am so excited for John’s story next!

A few more quotes:
“I agree with you,” he said quietly, “people do bring meaning to life, but I do not need as many people as others. I could have just one person. One person I truly loved, and that would be good enough for me.”

“Please, stay with me,” Luke whispered, his heart beating wildly within his chest. “Always,” Clara answered back, looking into his green eyes. “I love you, Luke. I think I always have; I just didn’t realize it.”

🩵 But it was a perfect match, because they chose each other every day.

This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

I got the privilege of reading another new-to-me author's lovely new release recently, and let me say that it is equally heart wrenching and absolutely precious. It's a Regency romance featuring a friends-to-lovers storyline that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Luke is a loner by nature but is "adopted" by his friend's family and is mentored by his father and is in love with his sister. The timeline is a strength of the story as we get to see 12 year old Luke already enamored with 8 year old Clara as it sets the stage for their romance. He fell first, but outgoing Clara isn't sure she reciprocates so she hies off to the London season, breaking Luke's heart as she goes. The richest part of the story occurs while they are apart, and sets their reunion up perfectly.

I enjoyed the witty writing and sweet relationships showcased in this story. The characters were full of emotion and I found myself laughing or tearing up a little with how relatable they were. I always count it a win when I can close a book with a sigh. Such a satisfying story, and I'll be tuning in for the rest of the series!

Thank you to @author.kiyleedavis for a copy of your story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I enjoy both brother's best friend and friends to more tropes, so when I read the description of this Regency novel, my favorite setting, I knew it would be one I would be reading.

This was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did feel that the beginning dragged a little bit as it established the history between the main characters, but I am not sure how the author could have shown us their relationship in a more abbreviated way.

Once Luke begins pursing Clara in earnest, the book really picks up. A side-effect of spending time with the characters through their growing up years is that we are really invested in their relationship, and I found my heart breaking with each of theirs several times when all hope seemed lost.

I did really like this book and look forward to reading more in the series. Despite my feelings about the slow start, the ending more than made up for any frustration and I will be purchasing a hard copy for my keeper shelf.

I received a review copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a positive review. All the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

New to me author! And I couldn’t put it down!

I was given an early copy of this book to read and review. The book was such an easy fun read—perfect for busy seasons of your life when you just need to drift away with a good book.

Luke won my heart right away and I cheered him on trying to win the heart of Clara. Their chemistry from the start made this book so enjoyable to read.

Clara was a delight. She wiggles her way into the reader’s heart and you want what’s best for her. Even if she doesn’t realize what she needs.

I found myself thinking about Luke and Clara when I wasn’t reading and wishing I could see what happens.

I currently teach HS and can’t wait to tell my students about this book bc I really think they will love Luke and Clara as much as I do!

Can’t wait to read John’s story!

This story is so beautiful and charming. And while parts of it ripped my heart right out, it was mended very well in the end with a beautiful happily ever after.

Luke and Clara are the perfect example of opposites attracting and how different strengths can complement each other so well.

Some of my favorite things about this book:

•strong family connections

•falling for your best friend’s little sister

•a love that grows and develops over time

•loving someone so much that you put their happiness first.

Favorite line: I have already chosen you in every room, in every circumstance, in every thought. I love you Clara Anne Merritt. Only you. Now and forever.

Line that kept me laughing: Luke was confused. "You are seeking employment?"
If you've read the book you know why this is so funny

It took awhile to get into the book. It was a little slow spanning over so many years. In the end it helped with good character development. I loved the Merritt’s taking Luke under their wings and giving him a family who cared for him. Just enough humor, love and angst to keep the story moving. Very enjoyable in the end.

Received this ARC from the author in exchange for a review.
This spans a number of years, mainly focusing on a young man whose father has died and who needs to be instructed by a neighbouring Lord in how to manage an Estate. He spends his summers with the family, growing up alongside the son and daughter.

Once he graduates,  his mother declares she is moving to Spain to remarry and leave him with the responsibility of the Estate.  He relies on the support of the family he has known all this time to advise him how best to deal with the old Estate house that is now his responsibility.

After spending so much time with them  he realized that he loves the daughter,  but his shyness keeps him from proclaiming his affection.

Their interaction has its ups and downs, especially after she comes of age and enters the London Society and is presented to the Queen, who almost immediately announces that she would make a great mate for a particular young gentleman.  She feels pressured by this,  and angry that she doesn't even seem able to enjoy the social life without this expectation hanging.

Without giving away how things conclude,  I will say that I enjoyed the rabbit trails of the story and am pleased to have been given the opportunity to read it.

O my my my! This book is just such a fun read from start to finish! Now I wont lie, Clara tested my patience more than once… There may have been a couple moments where I wanted to grab her shoulders and tell her to please stop making things harder… but honestly, that ended up being part of what made the story so good! Watching her slowly grow, face consequences, and figure things out (even if it was the hard way) made her feel real, and I loved that!

The mix of romance, tension, and character growth kept me completely invested, and I found myself flying through chapters! The relationships felt entertaining and layered, and the emotional moments hit even harder because Clara actually was learning what things in life are really most important. This book had drama, heart, frustrating decisions, and the kind of character journey that sticks with you after you finish the last page. O, and I can’t not mention Luke… I just fell in love with him! And if you want to know more about why, you’ll just need to read for yourself!

This is definitely one of those stories that’s easy to get wrapped up in!

Thank you so much to the author for a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

"A Lord of Valor" is a sweet and heartwarming coming of age story set primarily in Georgian England. The path to adulthood for siblings Clara and John Merritt, joined by close friend Luke Maxwell, features an interesting and improbable series of events.

Perhaps my following criticism lacks validity; this story should appeal more to young adult readers. Initially Clara acts even younger than her age, pouting and crying. Soon after, she's offering decorating advice, pouring tea, and acting like the lady of the manor (she's fourteen here, I believe.) Lovelorn Luke is an endearing character whose ridiculous mother requires him to grow up, and FAST. One scene has her languishing away, and everyone's concerned. However, all she needed was her true love in Spain (this is not a spoiler), and off she goes, leaving poor Luke to figure things out. The only thing the villain lacks is a twirling mustache.

Kiylee Davis's prose is pleasing enough, but riddled with grammatical errors. Hopefully these won't appear in the published novel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Ah, this book was achingly beautiful. Clara and Luke have the sweetest story though it’s definitely not without bumps in the road. This childhood friends to eventually more just pulled at my heart in so many ways!

I love Luke’s adoration of Clara. There’s something so pure and sweet about it, and he has the tenderest of hearts. He bides his time with her and risks it all.

Clara…sweet, bold Clara. I love how assertive she is in nearly every way except when it comes to love. Luke is her other half and her best friend.

I want to say more but don’t want to give away any spoilers! Their love came through so beautifully and felt unique—perhaps because you traverse their journey with them and takes them longer to get there but it is oh, so sweet in the end. They both have a lot to learn and some heartache to overcome before they find each other.

I’m THRILLED for the next book in this series! I’m dying for certain side characters to get their HEA!

Luke has loved Clara for as long as he can remember. Despite being opposite in every way, Luke can't deny how he feels about her. Luke waited years to tell Clara how he felt; he didn't want anything to happen between them that might affect her family. Luke has been best friends with John for years and knew how protective John was of Clara. And even her parents, who treated Luke like a son when his own family fell apart, loved Luke, and he didn't want anything to change that. Later, when unfortunate circumstances arise Clara's father entrusted her safety to Luke. During this time, Luke continued to fall for Clara even harder, especially knowing now that her parents approved of him. Right before Clara came out in society, Luke proposed to her. Getting turned down, Luke traveled to Spain for a few months to visit his mother, and Clara went out into society. Clara soon realized that not all men are proper, and when the queen chooses a match for Clara, she has to decide if she really is going to go against the Queen... or finally choose her heart.

The story had me hooked—it was funny and hard to put down. Loved navigating childhood to adulthood with these characters. Felt more bonded to them in many ways because of it as this book did the rare thing and got me crying at least once. Which I say is a good sign of an engaging story.

Only a couple detractors/feedback for the author to note. The way they spoke was a little more modern sounding than I would hope for. Because of it, I never imagined them with a British accent and it made it harder for me to imagine the story taking place in England.

I don’t know if I’ll word this well so please assume the best intentions/meaning, but the main guy was a bit gutless and cried a lot. I have nothing against men crying but in this case the main guy came off a bit acting the victim sometimes when he cried. I was less bothered by the crying (and the reasons for it) toward the end of the book. But even with that I really enjoyed the book and the author’s writing style.

I can’t wait to read book two—John’s story!

I was given an ARC for an honest review. Thank you for this opportunity to read an enjoyable book!

It seems as though Clara Merritt has always been a part of Luke Maxwell’s life. She was his best friend’s sister and was part of the activities on the Merritt estate. So, it was natural that Luke would be drawn to her. But, how does he show Clara that she means more to him than just a friend? I loved that Luke never gave up and wanted the best for Clara, whether that was a life with or without him.

Things to enjoy:
Georgian/ Regency period
Childhood friends to more
Reserved/ outgoing
Found family

I loved the role that Lord Merritt played in Luke’s life as a mentor and father figure. He offered him a place to learn about managing an estate and what it takes to be an aristocrat. The letter he left Luke was touching and was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Readers of historical kisses-only romances will enjoy this story. I am looking forward to reading book two in the series.

A Lord of Valor by @author.kiyleedavis
Rosecrest Estate, book one

This was such a sweet and tender read. Not just portraying a moment in time, this story shows a journey. Years of growth and each MC finding themselves and what they truly hope for. Things do not always go as planned. My only complaint is how long it took Clara to realize how amazing Luke is, but that’s the beautiful thing about second chance romance.

Luke Maxwell has had a fortunate life in being friends with Clara Merritt and her brother John. Their father takes Luke under his wing and what a beautiful gesture it is. Luke has always loved Clara and her endless chatter as well as her love of the spotlight.

Clara has always seen Luke as her dearest friend. His quiet nature has convinced her that she would enjoy a life with someone that loves parties and people. She soon finds what would truly make her happy.

Favorite Things:
Knights and Fairytales
Christmas Story tradition
Clarabear
Whist
Joan and Leopold
The Kiss
Locket
Dance
Mistletoe

Favorite Quote: “I do not need options,” Luke boldly declared. “I have already chosen you in every room, in every circumstance, in every thought…”

This story covers grief over the loss of a loved one and an attempted sexual assault.

A Lord of Valor is a wonderfully romantic tale of two people who’ve known each other most of their lives but find feelings can change, and sometimes not at the same time, making this an intriguing story of how true love perseveres.

Clara is a ray of sunshine and joy, happiness radiating from every pore. A social butterfly in every situation she’s determined to have a season in London and attract a most eligible bachelor.

Her brother and his best friend Luke have always looked at her as an extension of themselves, one of a trio of friends/family, until Luke begins to notice Clara is decidedly no longer a girl but a full grown and very beautiful woman.

I absolutely love Luke’s character, his steadfastness, shyness, and dedication to Clara who is blinded to the feelings he carries for her. He is one of my favorite male leads and had me rooting for him from the beginning.

I was given a copy courtesy of the author through BookSirens and this is my honest opinion of the book.

This is a sweet “opposites attract” Regency romance. I especially like the emphasis on family relationships, and the value placed on marriage and home life compared to social status. Baroness Maxwell finds happiness with a working class husband, and Countess Merritt disdains the Queen and the “ton” for true love. This generation strongly encourages their children to follow their hearts, rather than please others. This story also deals with grief from several angles. Probably the best-written passage, in my opinion, was in this context: “The wave of grief hit her again, knocking her into the stormy sea of sorrow. The current was strong, and tossed her repeatedly under the water, leaving her gasping for air.” The main characters were interesting, though I often wanted to give Luke or Clara a shake! Overall, the story is set in a world of such wealth that it sometimes felt unrealistic…but I guess that’s fiction for you. I appreciated the opportunity to read this ARC, and look forward to the next book(s) in this series.

A Lord of Valor is sweet, gentle, kisses only romance.

The protaganist, Luke, is a lonely, titled gentleman struggling to find his place in the world and his worth in himself. The object of his affections, Clara, is a somewhat naive, but lively young society lady who struggles to know what she truly wants in a life partner.

I found the characters engaging and the story fairly engrossing, though the plot took a bit to get moving.

Clara's relationship with her doting father was especially touching and well written.

While I can appreciate a Regency story that isn't fully adherent to full historical accuracy, the use of American slang and more modern words did pull me out of the world a bit too much.

If you are looking for a clean romance that would make a good beach/weekend read, A Lord of Valor will be a perfect fit!

This was a good book. Luke’s backstory was so sad. I just wanted to hug him. I loved how Clara’s family treated just like he was one of them, even when he kept expecting them to throw him off. I liked that Clara thought that perhaps her father and brother were wrong about her cousin, but she wasn’t stupid enough to agree to meet him in the middle of the night. One thing that annoyed me was that the titles are all wrong. For instance, Luke is called ‘Lord Maxwell’, but that’s his name, not his title. I’m not even sure what his title was because it was never used. The duke that queen wants Clara to marry is called Lord Gallant, but that is doubly wrong because, not only is Gallant his name and not his title, but dukes are never called ‘Lord’ anything. On the whole though this was a good book.

I received an ARC of this book, but all opinions are my own.

A Lord of Valor is a sweet, clean historical romance taking place before and during the Regency period in England. It focuses on the characters' coming of age, and how sometimes when we are young, we don't see what we really want until it's too late. The author does a nice job of describing the homes, the dresses, and the people of the era, and you get a feeling like you are right there with the characters. I also really like the focus on family and what makes a family, that people can love you even if you aren't a blood relative. I give this 4 stars because for me, I like a little more mystery or conflict in the books I read. But it's a nice romance that, at least for me, leaves me wanting to see read the next book in the series to see how the characters continue to grow and develop.

This story offers a tender, introspective look at love where it’s least expected. Baron Luke Maxwell, shaped by a difficult past, finds comfort in solitude and quiet companionship at Rosecrest Estate, home of his best friend, until Clara Merritt, his friend’s younger sister, disrupts his carefully guarded world. Clara’s charm and social ease seem worlds apart from Luke’s reserved nature. Could their sibling-like relationship evolve into something deeper? The emotional tension is gentle, offering an introspective look at finding love where it’s least expected. This book was just what I was hoping it would be: An enjoyable escape into a clean, romantic, Regency story. Thank you, Book Sirens, for the ARC.

A Lord of Valor focused on Lady Clara Merrit and Lord Luke Maxwell’s relationship from childhood friends to lovers.
Although I loved the premise and the writing was decent, this book was overall pretty disappointing. The characters were decent and had interesting backgrounds, like Avianna Merrit and Lady Merrit. It was a bit of a strange family dynamic between Luke and his mother, I found it quite “modern.” I found that some of the subplots weren’t really necessary to further the main theme or plot. Unfortunately, this book didn’t evoke any huge feelings but it was a decent “feel-good” book. The romance was cute enough and I really liked Lady Merrit’s character.

"A Lord of Valor" is a tour de force of palpable emotion that spans the gamut of human experience. At times charming and humorous, and at others poignant and raw, the slow burning story of Luke & Clara’s transformation from close family friends to the ultimate objective of their dreams is a sweet regency tale that will engross readers and transport them into the thick of the narrative. With lessons on patience, perseverance, and the importance of correct timing, we discover that the heart’s true desires may not be as they first seem. A highly enjoyable read you won’t want to miss!

I thought this was a sweet and enjoyable story. I easily got lost in the pages, though some of the phrases, expressions, and character dynamics felt a little off for the time period.

I will say, the direction the story took with the MMC and FMC wasn’t quite what I initially expected, and that made the journey even more fun. While some of the language and slang felt a bit too modern at times, readers who are simply looking for a heartfelt story and are willing to overlook some historical inaccuracies will likely find the happily-ever-after ending well worth the journey.

I found the characters engaging throughout the story, and I especially enjoyed Luke Maxwell. Clara did frustrate me at times because she felt overly spoiled and failed to see what was right in front of her, though not in a selfish or unkind way. The sentiment, “Be careful what you wish for,” felt especially fitting for her character.

I also loved the relationships between the parents and children, though again, they probably were not entirely an accurate portrayal of the era. Even so, it truly added to the sweetness and heart of the story.

I am looking forward to the subsequent books in the Rosecrest Estate series.

This was the first book I have read from this author and quite frankly I LOVED IT!!

There are wonderful characters within heart stopping moments within a plot that kept me interested.

My heart went out to both the hero and heroine as they tried to find what was truly their happiness.

The author crafted a wonderful world where the characters are lifelike and have “real” moments and emotions.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

I received an ARC copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

I always love a good 'best friends since childhood' and' brother's best friend' trope, and this book delivered. It had fantastic, deep, chapters worth of 'backstory' so that you actually felt you knew the characters and when troubles or problems arose they acted and reacted 'in character.'
Warning, I cried. There was nothing but real life in the book that provoked the emotion, but it was that clarifying type of emotion, that helps you process your own stress. A 'palate cleanser' type that allows you to dust yourself off and keep going (or keep reading).
Highly recommend this book as a sweet, clean romance perfect for ages 13+ and I'm really looking forward to the second one, totally invested in the character's lives and happily ever afters!
