Suffer Well: A Memoir of Endurance, Transformation and the Pacific Crest Trail

Rate this book

At nearly 450 pounds, Josh Murphy believed he was trapped in a cycle of self-destruction he would never escape.Suffer Well is an exploration of how a life unravels into despair, into self-destruction, into a body weighing nearly 450 pounds, and one man’s fight to take his life back.A violent upbringing, years of instability, hardship, poor decisions, and an unhealthy relationship with food had slowly narrowed his world until the idea of health, happiness, or a life with any sense of purpose seemed impossible.

After a lifetime of failure, Murphy finally took control of his life, losing more than 200 pounds through discipline, diet, and relentless physical training. But he soon discovered that doing everything right does not always lead to the outcome you expect.

When the life he had given everything to build fell apart, Murphy set out to hike every mile of the Pacific Crest Trail.

A 2,650-mile journey from Mexico to Canada through the deserts of Southern California to the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

For nearly six months he walked day after day through heat, storms, isolation, and exhaustion. Along the way he discovered that the physical challenge of the trail was only part of the journey.

He would learn that suffering, both physical and mental, can become a powerful force for change when it is faced head-on.

Suffer Well is not simply a story about hiking across America. It is a reflection on hardship, identity, and the strange clarity that emerges when a person pushes beyond the limits they once believed defined them. It serves as a testament that your past does not dictate the outcome of your future. You do.

Somewhere between the deserts and the mountains, Murphy discovered that suffering is not something to escape.

It is something that can reshape a life, if you’re willing to face it.

Josh is my good friend from firefighting. I knew the basics of his journey, and also some great stories he didn't include in the book, but I could've never imagined this.

I rated Martin Eden, an eloquently written interesting plot, a 4, and this a 5. Not just because Josh is my friend, but because you can feel that he needed to write it. A lot of these writers who write so fancily can't inspire an average reader like me, you know? I don't care about "show not tell", Josh writes it how it is. It hits home. I like how specific he is with mile run times and hiking shoe brands, it comes from a place of genuinely wanting to help the next person. Little moments from his life that show how stuck he was. It's not a book for everyone, but if you want something and don't know how to get it, give it a read. I know Josh likes philosophy books (so do I) but this is going to help the average reader a lot more. Cheers man

Great book about overcoming obstacles in life. He developed a mental toughness and the resilience to turn a young life around. (Your grandparents would be so proud of you…)
