Bob Burke Action Thriller #1

Burke's War: American Sniper Delta Force Mafia Murder Mystery

Rate this book
This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN: B00TXZYQWG

Welcome to ‘American Sniper’ meets ‘The Godfather’ ─ another suspense action thriller from an author with over 500 Five-Star Kindle ratings. As Bob Burke’s 737 lands at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, he sees a man strangling a woman on a rooftop below. No one believes him, of course, but that doesn’t matter. He knows what he saw, and Bob Burke isn’t the kind of guy to let a thing like that rest. In this medical fraud thriller, over the next three days, he finds himself butting heads with the Chicago mob, crooked suburban cops, a zealous US Attorney, a psychopathic doctor, and his own vindictive soon-to-be-ex-wife, who is trying to take his company away from him. Slight of build and now a telecommunications company executive, Burke appears to be an easy guy to dismiss; but ‘the telephone guy’ is a former Army Ranger and Delta Force commander who spent four tours in Iraq and the rugged mountains of Afghanistan running ‘special operations’ missions. He and his men are some of the most lethal killers the US government ever produced. As the others will readily admit, however, it is the little guy in the middle of their group photos who is the one you don’t want to meet in a dark alley. Whether he’s carrying a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle, a knife, or only his bare hands, he is equally lethal. So, when the bodies start falling, a young woman needs help, and the wrong people push his buttons, he doesn’t hesitate. His new combat zone might be a glittering high-rise office building, tract houses in a suburban subdivision, or a wooded Chicago Forest Preserve District, but they started it and Bob Burke intends to finish it. And when he needs a little backup, he knows just the guys to call.

If you like a good action adventure suspense thriller, put this fast-moving Delta Force thriller in your Cart. It is another war and military best seller novel from the author of ‘The Undertaker,’ ‘Amongst My Enemies,’ ‘Thursday at Noon,’ “Aim True, My Brothers,’ and ‘Winner Lose All.’ Enjoy!

I live in Florida. As a Vice President of the real estate subsidiary of a Fortune 500 corporation, I traveled widely in the US and abroad. A native of Chicago, I earned a BA in History and Russian Area Studies and a Master of Urban Planning degree from the University of Illinois. (Go Illini!) I’ve been active in politics (I had the stupidity to run and the misfortune to win a -year seat on a County Board of Supervisors) (more hard time than you’d get for armed robbery, car theft, or embezzlement in most states!) and active in numerous civic organizations. I served in the US Army and was a company commander and drug counselor. (The only two places in the country that teach leadership and organizational management are the Boy Scouts and the Army) When I’m not writing, I like to play golf (usually poorly) paint landscapes in oil or acrylics and running 5Ks. (slower every year) .

My wife and I have traveled extensively in Germany, Russia, the Caribbean, England, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Egypt, and Israel.

I first read this book a few years ago as an e-book. Thanks to Audible and the author for sending me a free download in exchange for an honest review of the audiobook.

Bob Burke looks out the window of his plane as it’s landing at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, and he thinks he sees a man strangling a woman on a rooftop.** But when no one believes him, what’s a guy to do? Well, if you’re a former Army Ranger and Delta Force commander, you get your old gang back together to help you find a killer.

Bob Burke is a great character. Physically reminiscent of Chuck Norris, he’s an absolutely lethal force in the body of an unassuming, normal-looking man. In temperament, he’s like Patrick Swayze from Roadhouse: cool, calculating, and nice, until it's time to not be nice.

This book is fast-paced, funny, and never boring. The narrator has a great voice, and does a good job voicing the various characters. Highly recommended.

** I'm not sure that you can really witness a crime on a rooftop while you're flying overhead on an airplane, but you’ll just have to suspend your disbelief on that one point. :)

I was looking for a book to read, something with some action in it and I saw the sequel to this book on my Kindle feed. It looked like it might be a good read but I generally like to start at the beginning of a series which, led me to look at this book. After reading the blurb and seeing the many high ratings I decided to give it a shot.

I love a good vigilante book, so I was ready to go. We're told Bob's qualifications at the beginning which, I think is a good idea for authors, especially in the first book. It primes the reader to start suspending reality and accept why the character is able to do the things (s)he does without a lot of "that's not possible" or "That would never happen".

The plot line was interesting and will require that suspension of belief right from the start with Bob's observation of the event that will change his life forever.

The story was well written and the charters were richly developed to give you a fairly clear perception of who they are and what motivated them through the events of the story.

The first quarter of the book was slow but that is to be expected in the first book of a series as all the characters and landscape need to be laid'd out. Once the action starts it only keeps ratcheting up until the final curtain call. My hope for the other books in the series are quicker to get into the action.

I never really have trouble giving authors and their characters a lot of leeway as long as it's with a reasonable ballpark of believe-ability but one thing that irritates me is when plot devices used to force a character to do something or to advance a plot line are illogical. There were a couple of those in the book but they didn't raise to the scope of ruining the story for me.

In the end we get what I was looking for, a good vigilante tale, lot's of action, and a mostly satisfying conclusion to the various plot lines and characters.

If you're a fan of vigilante books, action/thriller or suspense books then this should be a very satisfying read an start to a new series for you.

On his way back home to Chicago from Washington, DC, as his plane is landing, telecom CEO Bob Burke sees a man strangle a woman on a rooftop near O’Hare Airport. The problem is, no one believes him. Burke, already in a struggle with his soon-to-be ex-wife for control of his company, finds himself having to fight the Chicago mob, crooked local cops, an over-zealous U.S. attorney, and a psychopathic doctor to put things right. The average guy would give up in the face of such odds, but the former Ranger and Delta Force commander is not the average guy, and he never gives up. When people he cares about are threatened, it becomes personal, and the bad guys find out just how stupid it is to mess with Bob Burke, especially when he calls on his old special ops buddies for help.
Some people might find it hard to believe that a passenger on an airplane could see someone on the ground clearly enough to identify them. Having made many landings at the old Hong Kong airport, where planes wove between high-rise buildings on the final approach, I can assure you it is possible, and for someone trained as a special operations observer, credible. I can recall landings in Hong Kong where I was able to see the buttons on laundry hanging on balconies, or what people were eating for supper. You don’t see it for long, but if you’re trained, you can see long enough.
Burke’s War by William F. Brown is a knuckle duster of the first order, with bad guys falling like ten pens at a championship, and enough knock-down action to satisfy the most hardcore action addict. If you like thrillers where the good guy goes up against impossible odds, you’ll love this book.

I'm sure books are to authors what children are to parents, so I hate to rip them. However, I also hate for people to waste money. This is not a good book.

Start with suspending reality at the outset. Not only does our Jack Reacher wannabe see a murder on a rooftop from a plane - that is flying - he is able to look into the eyes of both the killer and the strangled woman. I could live with that as a premise to get the book going.

Going? Thanks to reading on a Kindle, I'm able to tell you that no action and no thrills happened until 35% through the book. There is talking. More talking. More stilted talking. More talking. More uninteresting talking and a predictable plot that brings more talking, unless it is page upon page of character background and description.

This is a book t0o be skipped

Once I got past the unbelievable start to the story, but hey what do I know I never flown in a plane, I really enjoyed the story.

I'm not going to go through what the story is all about plenty of other reviews have that covered, but I will tell you that it is a fast paced with tons of action & humor that is well written, if there were any typos they flew by me.

I will most definitely be checking out other books by this author

Burke's war

One of the most interesting stories I've read in the last few years as it stayed active for nearly the entire read. The hero was a little difficult to believe but that is expected for this type plot. The tie to the typical Chicago Mafioso was funny but a very real statement as to today.

‘I’ll have all the help I need. And I’ll get her back. Trust me, I’ll get her back.”

Florida author William F. Brown has penned nine suspense novels and four award-winning screenplays. His specialty is thriller stories that step into the arena of espionage – a very popular topic at this particular time. William is a native of Chicago, received undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Illinois, and served as a Company Commander in the US Army. He then raveled widely in the US and abroad as a Vice President of the real estate subsidiary of a Fortune 500 corporation. William is also a landscape artist.

Having read Books 2 and 3 of this trilogy it is especially fascinating to return to the opening volume of Book 1 – BURKE’S WAR. Brown defines his new character well - Bob Burke is a former sniper, Army Ranger, and Delta Force commander. And as a prelude we learn, ’As Bob Burke’s 737 lands at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, he sees a man strangling a woman on a rooftop below. No one believes him, of course, but he knows what he saw, and Bob Burke isn’t the kind of guy to let a thing like that rest. Slight of build and now a telecommunications company executive, this “telephone guy’ is a former Army Ranger and Delta Force commander. He spent four tours in Iraq and the rugged mountains of Afghanistan running ‘special operations’ missions, and is one of the most lethal killers the US government ever produced. Over the next three days, he finds himself butting heads with the Chicago mob, crooked suburban cops, a zealous US Attorney, a psychopathic doctor, and his own vindictive soon-to-be-ex-wife, who is trying to take his company away from him. As his big, muscular, Delta sergeants will readily admit, he’s the one you don’t want to meet in a dark alley. Whether he’s carrying a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle, a knife, or only his bare hands, he is equally lethal. So, when the bodies start falling and a young woman needs help, he doesn’t hesitate. His new combat zones might be in a glittering high-rise office building, a tract house in a suburban subdivision, or a wooded Chicago Forest Preserve District, but they started it and Bob Burke intends to finish it. And when he needs some backup, he knows just the guys to call.’

Brown’s writing style is commensurate with the flavor of his thrillers – ‘Over the years, Bob Burke had watched a lot of people die. He probably even killed more than his share; but that was during two wars, and this wasn’t Iraq or Afghanistan. He was flying in a 767 over suburban Chicago, and for a second he forgot where he was. He unbuckled his seat belt, stood, and shouted, “My God, that guy’s killing her,” and pointed out the window.’ And on it goes

Few writers today match Will’s style with thriller on a contemporary stage. He never lets us down, and this book is especially strong as an opener for a new suspense thriller!

Chicago’s O’Hare airport. Robert “Bob” Tyrone Burke (Toler TeleCom president, retired US Army Ranger, Delta Force CO, Major, West Point, Iraq X4, Afghanistan), & Charlie Newcomb (Toler TeleCom Finance VP) were glad to be back home after a business trip to Washington, DC.
The DoD had chosen Summit Symbiotics instead.

A woman had been murdered on a rooftop when the plane was coming in for a landing.
Dr. Larry “Lawrence” Greenway (CHC president, Medicare/Medicaid, Loyola; MD, NW; MBA), Linda Sylvester (CHC receptionist), & Mr. Anthony “Scales” Scalese (Tony, CHC Security Head) were both listening in.

Charlie or Sabrina Fowler ((United Airlines flight attendant) had no clue what had happened.
Peter Francis O’Malley III (US Attorney N, IL.) came to interview Angelina “Angie” Burke (Ed’s only child, Bob’s ex-wife, Toler TeleCom VP, nëe Toler).
Eleanor Purdue (Angie’s BFF, Toler TeleCom CFO) had been murdered.
Case #72 (trump-up charges). Bob (defendant), George Grierson (lawyer), Patrolman 3rd Class
Linda was called to Dr. Greenway office.
Mount Prospect, IL. 927 Asbury Circle. Linda & Bob were setting out front.

2 goombah’s Angelo Rocco (52), & Stanley Hruska were holding down the fort.
The other 1 Gino Santucci Bob knocked him out & threw him in the trunk of the Lincoln.
1 more Angelo was sitting in a Chrysler. Bob didn’t have time to mess with him.
Now, what to do with the contents the 2 of them came for?
Sabrina wouldn’t be taking any more flights.

What happened to Charles “Charlie” Newcomb?
What were Bob Burke, & Linda Sylvester up to?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. It was just OK for me so I will rate it at 4/5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; William F. Brown; 1 edition; BookFunnel; Amazon Digital Services LLC.; book

Robert T Burke is a retired Army Major who has left the adrenaline pumping action of being and elite Army Delta Operator and taken a job in Corporate America. Why the change? Well, let's say that sometimes lust overcomes sense. Bob has meet a woman who steals his heart. She also happens to have a father who runs a Telecommunications company that has contracts with the Department of Defense. So, Burke becomes a Corporate Officer instead of just an Army Officer.

But the Army never leaves a true warrior. As such when Bob sees a woman being murdered he decides to take action not just let the chips fall where they may. When the local police seem to be uninterested in the murder, because they are on the Mafia's payroll, Burke decides to take some action on his own.

As he looks deeper into the problem he comes face to face with the Chicago Mafia and they don't take kindly to someone looking into their business. As such they send a friendly (or not so friendly) message to Bob to back off or die. Well, that was the worse thing they could do. Bob is not someone to back off.

After the Mafia then kills again Bob is out for justice. He calls his friends back at Delta Group and even though these men are still in the military they know their true leader is Retired Major Burke and they are not slow to respond. They come together to join forces and set out to rescue a kidnapped little girl, and send a message to the Mafia to back off.

The action is non stop. The story is very believable. It really could happen today. BUT, could our elite Delta Force Operators really get this done on American soil and not get arrested? Well, that is what you have to read to find out.

This is the first in a new series. Two books are out. Read this one first and then move on to Burke's Gamble. You will not be disappointed.

This is the first book in the thriller series that features ex-special forces major Bob Burke. Bob left the military to join his father-in-law’s telecom business. That business has important Department of Defense (“DOD”) contracts concerning highly sensitive communications software and equipment. However, complications with his new civilian life occur when Bob’s father-in-law dies and leaves the firm to Bob. Bob now has a very jealous and vengeful wife (soon to be ex-wife) on his hands. Plus, the business just lost its most lucrative contract with the DOD. Then, Bob witnesses a murder. However, the local suburban cops’ back-up the suspected murder’s claim of innocence and that no one has died. Bob decides to do his own investigation and implement his own measure of justice. This brief explanation of Bob’s background, character and situation takes up about one-third of the story. That is one-third with minimal action and a question for the reader of exactly where is this story going? Once the action kicks in, you’ll be glad you stuck with the story. The intensity and danger increase rapidly once it comes out that the murder was covered-up by corrupt cops to help conceal an underlying crime of immense government corruption in the Chicago area. The criminals will stop at nothing to get Bob Burke off the investigation. The characters are well drawn and mostly believable (considering I have no first-hand experience with special forces personnel nor mafia personnel). The dialogue is in keeping with the story and the characters. If there is one shortcoming in the story, it seemed to me that a lot a gunfire, death and destruction occur in heavily populated areas that draw limited, if any, reaction from the local authorities.

A Brilliant well written and right up there with Reacher!
From the very first page I was straight into the book enjoying the story and characters and as soon as I finished I bought book two “Burkes Gamble” so that says it all.
A very well written storyline and has pace and action throughout. The author obviously knows his stuff and weapons as his description and knowledge is spot on. Love Bob Burke attitude and his team, in fact “love everything about the book!”
Basically Bob Burke is a retired experienced x vet (Delta Force – Army Ranger Commander and one of the most lethal killers ever produced by the army) with distinction but now a telecommunications company executive flying back to Chicago O’Hare airport when as the plane is landing he witnesses a man strangling a women on an office roof top building. On landing he reports his sighting to the airport police which then starts his troubles as no one believes him, however Bob is the kind of man used to troubles and not to let sleeping dogs lie! He is tagged,; wrongly as just a simple “phone guy” how wrong they can be. Over the next few days Bob (Code named the Ghost) takes on the killer and the Chicago mob with the assistance of his x delta force chums at fort Bragg.
Well recommended it for holidays, or just sitting down and chilling out if you enjoy fast moving thrillers you will love this book!.

Bob Burke seems to be a mildish-mannered CEO of a small telecommunications company. He is hassled by an aggressive wife and struggling to hold on to his business. On a flight home from a business trip, he sees a murder being committed on the roof of a building as his plane coasts towards the airport. Angered by the violence of the killing and the desperate struggles of the young female victim, Burke sets out to find her killer.

And that’s when the fun starts. His investigation leads to corrupt cops, venal politicians, a perverted doctor who runs a huge medical conglomerate, and the Italian Mafia. The Mafia boss orders his minions to get rid of ‘that telephone guy’ but what he doesn’t know is that Burke’s is ex-Delta Force with combat and tracking skills the Italian bozos, the crooked sheriff, and other assorted gangsters couldn’t even dream of.

I am offering no more spoilers, but I will say this. If you value your sleep at night, don’t start this book in the evening. You won’t get to bed. It is absolutely unputdownable, a rollicking, non-stop whirlwind of excitement and suspense. I absolutely loved it. An as soon as I click on ‘Post’ for this review, I am going straight back into Amazon to buy my next ‘Burke’.

Burke's War - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Burke's War reminds me of the movie Girl On A Train, or an Agatha Christie novel, where the MC sees a murder being committed from a distance - but with no proof of the killer's nor victim's ID.

William F. Brown introduces the Jack Reacher-like Bob ''Ghost" Burke, ex-Army, ex-CIA, now the 'Telephone Guy'/CEO of a Government-contracted, hi-tech communications company, so cleverly, that you feel as if you're seeing the action through his eyes.

The vindictive actions of his soon-to-be ex-wife, Angie, the entanglement of the killer's company with the Mob, the death of innocent victims and the attempt to frame Bob for heinous crimes he didn't commit all lead to him declaring the eponymous war...let evildoers tremble and flee his wrath!

Turn down the lights, take the phone off the hook and put the cat out for the night, because even at 500+ pages long, you won't want to be disturbed, while you experience the full drama and tension of this epitome of a brilliant action-thriller, that guarantees a 5-star satisfaction even if you have to read all night - outstanding and unputdownable!

This reminds me of the Don Pentleton's Mack Bolan and The Executioner series from the late '60 and 70's. I don't know how many of those I read but when you are in the Navy aboard a ship at sea recreation is a little hard to come by and the ship's library had a ton of these. Mack wasn't Delta Force, Oh man just how old am I, there wasn't any Delta Force not to mention cell phones, computers and miniature radios back then.

This was a fun read and a bit of an update on that series although other people are still writing the Executioner books I think or maybe they are re-releases of the old books because I sometimes see them around. And not all those SEALs, Rangers, Force Recon guys are big. I served with UDT Team 11 back in the day, not as a combat swimmer, but as a support guy for the SDV Program and earlier as a member of Boat Support Unit One and Coastal River Squadron in Vietnam and they weren't huge. Muscular, well trained, resourceful and deadly but not huge. Good guys and teammates forever.
