The College Chronicles #1

Mathematical Equations

Rate this book
Leigh Reyes has always believed life works best when it follows clear rules, numbers add up, routines make sense, and emotions stay carefully contained. Working quietly behind the scenes at Southern Square College, Leigh is dependable, disciplined, and determined to keep her world balanced after years of putting everyone else first. But when an unexpected connection disrupts her carefully calculated life, Leigh begins to realize that some equations can’t be solved with logic alone. Mathematical Equations is a romance about insta-love, an unexpected pregnancy, and a fake relationship that turns real, reminding Leigh that love doesn’t follow rules, it rewrites them.

I stayed up late reading this book because I couldn't put it down until my eyes started closing and then I finished it as soon as I woke up the next day. I loved everything about Leigh and Diego and their love for each other, Leigh’s brother Charlie and their found family of friends. I felt that the accidental pregnancy and fake dating/fiance tropes worked really well in this romance novel and the little bit of suspense both times kept me on the edge of my seat even though I knew of course everyone would be fine and they'd get their HEA. Thank you to author Lizzy Goldmoon for giving me the opportunity to read this early. It truly was my pleasure to read your debut romance novel.

When I received an ARC copy of Mathematical Equations, I set out to write a review that is both honest and kind to a new author. By the end of the book, I realised I would have to settle for it being honest. There simply wasn’t much redeemable about this book.

The repetitiveness of the prose made it read like a fever dream, a constant stream of descriptions pieced together by adjectives so misplaced they might as well have been drawn in a raffle.

The sentence structure was awkward and the imagery lacking.

“The quiet hum of the engine filled the silence between us, but it wasn’t uncomfortable, it was something else. The kind of quiet that didn’t need to be filled with words, where just being there was enough.”

While not too jarring on its own, when you spend 200+ pages reading about things not being x but the kind of y, you eventually start pulling your hair and screaming for help.

Heels clicked on the floor twice a chapter, while everything happened for the first time in a long time.

“Before I could protest, she pulled me up and pulled my arm, guiding more like pulled me toward the inside of the car.”

I don’t go into a debut contemporary romance novel expecting a literary masterpiece but I do expect coherent sentences. Even writing this review, spell checker underlined parts of the quote. How it ever made it past the first draft is beyond me.

On top of that, the plot had multiple inconsistencies. Either that, or Diego has a chameleon car changing colour from black to red, and pregnancy tests now come with a free gender reveal.

However, the portrayal of Amelia, a character using sign language to communicate, was the worst offender. Amelia’s muteness is implied to be of both physical and psychological nature, which simply doesn’t work in the context of the story. Her friends bully her into singing karaoke and she… absolutely kills it? It’s mentioned that the friend group learned sign language to communicate with her which apparently extends to Leigh’s ten year old autistic brother. I could get behind Diego knowing sign language before joining the group, though, given his position at the college. Never mind, a few chapters later he forgot it.

The “fake dating” plotline was pretty much non-existent, considering both characters clearly had feelings for each other from the start. When it was brought up again, half way into the book, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Seriously guys, we are still doing this?

As for the spice, there was barely any. After about ten pages of kissing, the author skims through a few sentences of the actual action, avoiding any explicit description of the female parts while being overtly graphic with the male. At least the female lead got her orgasm, I guess.

Overall, I give the book a weeping tip out of ten.

If you get that reference, my condolences.

I would’ve given it less stars but I felt like the author was really trying. First, I thought it was a closed door book- within the first chapter or 2 there was spice. The story itself was kinda cute, with some good drama in it, and she always surprised me on where she took the drama, which was good. But I just couldn’t finish this book. I got bored and there were too many details and a lot of things left unsaid at the same time. Once I started skimming through the book just to finish it I decided to just DNF it. There’s too many books to read out there to force this one. I really wanted to love it but it was just a no from me. 💔

A fun read

**little spoiler
I’m so excited to have been able to read this book from a local RGV (Rio Grande Valley) Author. It’s a not so meet cute story with a bit of fun, spice, humor, and drama. It reminded me of the Spanish Novelas I would watch with my grandma. I recommend this book for it character and charm that included a female lead who is taking on such a big role as a woman wanting to move up and better herself, an older sister taking on the role as a mother figure to her autistic brother, and a mother. I would recommend this book to others.

Mathematical Equations by Lizzy Goldmoon
The College Chronicles – Book 1

Leigh lives by logic, structure, routines, and keeping her heart carefully guarded. But when an unexpected connection flip flops her perfectly planned world, she learns that love doesn’t follow equation.

I went into this one excited, I really enjoy college romances, and it hooked me from chapter 1.
It’s an easy, engaging read and the art in the book was such a fun addition!

Leigh stood out to me. She is strong, smart, and carrying so much for her family, especially her brother. Her resilience really hit. But honestly, her friend group might’ve been my favorite part “The Restroom Club” (Isla, Jennifer, and Amelia) brought such a genuine, supportive bond. Those friendships felt real and grounding. I’m especially hoping we get more of Amelia’s story next, there was so much left to know about her.

Diego starts off as the “bad boy,” but there’s so much more to him. He is caring, generous, confident with just a bit of arrogance . I also loved the sprinkle of Spanish words throughout, it added a nice personal touch.

The story had plenty of twists that kept things interesting, and while some moments moved quickly, it made for a fast paced, engaging read that kept me turning the pages.

Thank you @lizzygoldmoon for the book!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!!!

Tropes: Insta Love, Fake Relationship/Real Feelings, College Setting, Accidental Pregnancy

Loved the friendships in this! I think friendships are so important, especially as we grow into adulthood.

This was also the first accidental pregnancy book I've read (I think) and it was super sweet! ~> I love how it played out and it was just the cutest !!!

I’m so happy that I could read this author’s debut novel and I look forward to more from her!!

Quotes I Liked:
"Or maybe it's just good math, two broken pieces adding up to something that finally makes sense."

"You are my beginning. And I don't want to waste another second pretending this is temporary."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (4.5/5)

This was one of those books that was really easy to keep reading. I told myself I would stop after a few chapters. That didn’t happen.

I enjoyed Leigh and Diego’s story a lot! I was invested in their relationship early on. Seeing everything develop between them kept me turning the pages. The fake dating and accidental pregnancy tropes both worked for me.

Leigh’s friend group was a standout. They were supportive without taking over the story. I looked forward to their scenes, and they added a lot to the overall reading experience.

A few moments felt a little rushed. Even so, I had a great time with this book. The characters kept me engaged, and I’m looking forward to reading more from Lizzy!

ARC reader here—Mathematical Equations exceeded my expectations. I was hooked from the beginning and genuinely cared about the characters. Leigh’s journey felt real and tender, and the love story had me smiling one minute and getting emotional the next.
The chemistry, the supportive friend group, and the “everything just changed” moments made this such an addictive read. I finished this story feeling satisfied, happy and already wanting more from this world. Can't wait to see what else is in store for this series!

Thank you @lizzygoldmoon and NetGalley for this ARC! 💕 This is my honest review 🫶🏻

This was such a funny, cute, and sweet read. There was a little drama 👀, but nothing too heavy. It’s definitely a nice, calmish book to read between your darker reads—or if you just love romance, then you should absolutely give this one a try! 💕🫶🏻

If you like fake dating with real feelings, accidental pregnancy, supportive friends, insta-love, a college campus setting, and autism awareness, then add this one to your TBR ✨

Unfortunately this was a DNF about 50% through for me. I really wanted to enjoy it going in as I like many of the tropes listed. I have also never DNF'd an ARC before but I can't make myself keep reading. I didn't connect with the characters or the plot at all. The story was disjointed and many of the details were inconsistent which really took me out of the story. I felt like I read so much and still learned so little? idk how to explain it. I hate to leave a negative review for a debut author but I want to give my honest experience as well for other readers.

This book is the perfect palette cleanser when you need something fast paced and fun! ✨️
The characters were quippy. The descriptions were really good. I'm not typically a romance reader, but this book made me want to get some more romances on my shelves. As an author's first book and debut novel you really can feel the love and time and care that was put into writing this.

There were sometimes where the pacing felt a little too quick. But it is easy to look past
Due to the story being so adorable.

I received this ARC and have to say it was such a cute read. The banter between the friends was so good and you can feel the genuine friendship that they have. This is an easy read, not too heavy given the unexpected pregnancy trope. I really enjoyed it
