Suicide of a Nation: Immigration, Islam, Identity

Rate this book
A searing examination of Britain's political crisis and the growing chasm between Westminster and the people it governs.

Suicide of a Nation is a story of how Britain, one of the most remarkable countries on earth, is not just in decline but is committing national suicide. It is a story of how a people are losing their own country. Mass uncontrolled immigration, porous borders, 'two-tier multiculturalism', and a draconian regime of censorship are all contributing to not just the transformation of a country and a people but their very replacement.

Drawing on a huge amount of data, rigorous analysis, and demographic forecasts, Suicide of a Nation pulls back the curtain to show readers how their population, how their country, is now being completely transformed -and in ways they never voted for, nor ever asked for.

Through an unflinching look at reality, a reality the politicians would rather you ignore, Suicide of a Nation asks and then answers a series of uncomfortable but urgent questions.

What is happening to Britain, and why? On current demographic trends, where will the country be at the end of the century, only 74 years from now? Why are millions of people, including their wishes, concerns, and worries, being ignored? Why has the country's political and cultural elite become so utterly disconnected from the rest of the country? What might happen if none of this is addressed? And what must change before it is too late?

The only thing commendable about this book is its brevity - though 204 pages was a struggle to get through because, for an ex academic, Goodwin has a very poor grip over evidence and argument. It seems he used AI to write it too - lots of threads on X about the errors in it. (‘Some footnotes reportedly include unedited URLs with tracking parameters such as “utm_source=chatgpt.com,” raising concerns that material may have been copied from AI-generated outputs without proper verification. More seriously, several quotations attributed to figures including Cicero, Hayek, Burnham, Connor, and Scruton are said to be inaccurate, misattributed, or untraceable. In some cases, the wording closely resembles AI-style summaries rather than original texts’ - see @docrussjackson on X for more).

Having failed miserably in a by-election because people saw through him, Goodwin has decided to spill out a book to boost his challenged ego, pouring out more misinformation and bile, blaming foreigners for all uk problems. He argues about English ethnicity, seeing it as a homogeneous entity, ignoring how culture is always heterogeneous and mutable. Culture is never a fixed or homogeneous thing. Maybe this country’s problems are because the super rich, who Goodwin represents, are trousering all the assets while Goodwin points a finger at poor brown people. His finger pointing is particularly directed at Muslims. Far right nonsense. Written by someone who sounds like a furious teenager having a tantrum because teachers don’t take seriously his theory that all problems in the school are the fault of a clever boy from Afghanistan, a refugee, in year 7.

AI SLOP. Completely fabricated nonsense pulled from ChatGPT. Should be fined for spreading misinformation in this manner.

Wondered what the hype was, so gave it a try - it’s terrible, AI slop tarted up to try and pass as a work of rhetoric. The author, who recently lost a by-election and then cried about it (even involving the police, who found no untoward behaviour in the voting ) tries to keep stoking the fires of racial division to forward his grift, but fails miserably, with manufactured, misattributed and poorly researched quotes and material.
Not even worth one star - it’s laughably bad.

Eye opening and terrifying all on one. An excellent read addressing the islamisation of Britain and the decline of the native population as a result of mass uncontrolled immigration that nobody voted for. The political class have failed the British public for decades now and this book highlights a lot of the reasons why. I think people reviewing it as 1* are the people who buy into the ideology that “diversity is our strength” without looking at (or simply ignoring) the data which shows it is not eg the systematic rape of white working class girls by Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs, the sheer volume of foreign nationals in Britain not working and claiming benefits at the expense of the British taxpayer, the amount spent on translation services in the U.K. because foreign nationals cannot speak English. And on, and on and on.

The backlash against this book is very telling and a symptom of the very pathology that has created the situation Britain finds itself in. Read it for yourself, don't take someone else's opinion on this.

Matt Goodwin’s Suicide of a Nation: Immigration, Islam, Identity, sold roughly 10,000 copies during its first week. That is interesting, as none of the usual newspapers has seen fit to review the volume. Such reviews that have been published in political magazines have tended to be hatchet jobs, and none of the major book chains seems to want to stock Suicide of a Nation on the open shelves: Waterstone’s only sells Goodwin’s book by special order, and warns the putative punter that delivery will take two weeks.

Over at Amazon, the book sold out twice within the first week, and sales had to be suspended to allow the company to restock. So, people who wanted to read Suicide of a Nation had to wait, leaving the review section wide open for those who hadn’t read it but still wanted to express their outrage. That situation has changed, as more people have read the work and posted their reviews, but I doubt Matt Goodwin was ever unduly bothered by any of this. Suicide of a Nation was self-published by the author, so he will trouser about seventy per cent of the price of each copy sold.

The work is a trade book, as Goodwin has admitted. Normally, that refers to the size of the volume, with American trade size being 6" X 9", but here it also means it is aimed at the general reader, rather than at a specialised audience. I suspect that Goodwin aimed at a readership that does not normally consume political texts, so he has written in the vernacular to make sure that his text is comprehensible to them. Although short, at just under 200 pages, I think that the book could have been shortened still further to a pamphlet length of about 10,000 words.

The point here is that Suicide of a Nation has a fairly straightforward argument; namely, that our elite is now so decadent that the consensus amongst them is that primitive foreigners are preferred to native British people. This state policy is maintained by open borders and a policy of two-tier multiculturalism. So, British culture is suppressed, and native practises are encouraged. All of this is backed up by increasing censorship, especially of social media. Those arguments could have been presented in a shorter, snappier way and made an ideal pamphlet.

As it is, Suicide of a Nation suffers from too much repetition, with Goodwin seemingly a great fan of listing places. So, cities where the British are becoming a minority in their own land range from “Blackburn to Bradford, Cambridge to Coventry, Nottingham to Reading, Peterborough to Sandwell, Oxford to Wolverhampton.” He then goes on the list a whole tranche of towns that will become minority British sooner rather than later.

At root, says Goodwin, the growth of the problem is to be found in the birth of a new elite of “politicians, civil servants, academics, broadcasters…that is guided by an entirely new moral code.” They are governed by an ideology that Goodwin calls “suicidal empathy”. He goes on to say: “It is the belief that extending limitless sympathy to outsiders is the highest form of goodness, even when doing so harms your own people.” That very many people were harmed by this new elite and its policies is obvious when one considers the Pakistani rape gangs, who have abused so many of Britain’s daughters in the mill towns. The indifference shown by the great and good towards ordinary British people is something new in our country’s history.

In the past, there were some points of contact between the elite and the masses of the population. Sometimes they even shared common interests, which brought them together. For instance, one of the premier events in the field sports season was the Waterloo Cup, held every year in West Lancashire where the finest lurchers competed to chase hares. The event drew a crowd that was made up of toffs and yobs, with the former being farmers, gentry and county townsmen who arrived in their Bentleys and Land Rovers and the latter consisting of people from the industrial towns who arrived in hired charabangs with crates of brown ale to prevent dehydration on the journey. Both groups were quite happy to mingle and chat as they watched a few unlucky bunnies being disembowelled by the doggies.

Today, no such points of contact exist between the elite and the bulk of the people, so subterfuge is used to keep the population quiet. “Between Tony Blair taking power in 1997 and Boris Johnson leaving office twenty-five years later, more than sixteen million immigrants migrated into Britain.” You would expect one of the major parties to have been opposed to that open-door policy, but both conspired together to gaslight the population into thinking that all was well.

When individuals began to question this elite consensus that was aimed directly against them, the mask came off and the heavy hand was applied. Thus, the police threaten dissident journalists with non-crime hate incidents, and 12-year-old girls who attend their school’s cultural event wearing a Union Flag dress get sent home for their pains. The aim is to intimidate the dissidents into silence, and leave the rest with their hundred TV channels of prolefeed.

Goodwin has a disinclination to discuss the role of the middle class in all of this. It is one thing to point the finger at the elite, but these policies could not exist without the support of the teaching trade, social work industry, bovine plods, compliant hacks and ancillary rabble. Such types may not make elite policy, but they are determined to pander to it to show how bien pensant they are. My feeling is that this accounts for the attacks that have been made towards both Matt Goodwin and Suicide of a Nation with the early Amazon reviews.

Goodwin concludes his volume by presenting a plan to recover the country through democratic means. However, that is conditional upon people turning out to vote on election days, and the people who are the most opposed to this century’s changes to their country are also the people who are the least likely to vote.

Suicide of a Nation has seemingly been written to appeal to those people. If it succeeds in helping to increase involvement in the political process, then it will have achieved its aim, and Matt Goodwin will have earned his place in the pantheon of British writers whose work has helped to change our country for the better.

So this is not my politics, and I read this with a sceptical lens, but this book is just a middle-aged rant at things that have changed.

There's no analysis. There's no thought. Zero insight. There's nothing here outside of a low-rent tabloid opinion page. You could train an AI dataset on thirty years of opinion pages, ask it to write 200 pages of nonsense and it would produce this.

If you are a GB News viewer, don't care about being grammatically correct and want to be riled, then this is the book for you. Cherry picked stats with zero thought. If you want something a little deeper than poorly constructed word salad rubbish, then best avoided.

If this is the best Matt Goodwin can come up with, then academic writing - like politics - is not for him.

Controversial yes? Literary Marmite!

Some very thought provoking ideas brought up, backed up with real life examples. Not everyone will agree with Mr Goodwin's opinions.
I certainly do not agree all of his ideas, especially the future projections. But it is well worth reading.

Many of the talking points in this book will be familiar to anyone who has been following the Online Right for the past couple of years, so it offers nothing particularly new, however I can see how it will be like dynamite in the hands of grumpy pensioners who don't have an X account and haven't been keeping up to date with what's going on in politics. There is a lot of commentary about it being written with the use of AI - leading to the author Matt Goodwin being nicknamed 'MattGPT' - which is unfortunate because the points he is making are valid. Whether it's the disastrous consequences of mass migration or a modern Britain which is suffering from two-tier justice and failed multiculturalism, I do basically agree with Goodwin, but I didn't like how lazily he presents his ideas here and how there is not much originality on display: for an academic, he seems to display a worrying lack of research skills, and many of the quotes he includes from other writers, such as the much-missed conservative philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, come without proper footnotes or a nod to the original source; also, there is almost nothing in the way of interviews or data Goodwin has collected himself. I say this with not a small amount of disappointment because I used to enjoy Goodwin's commentary before he became so clearly intertwined with Nigel Farage and Reform UK, who offer nothing but the same old fake conservative policies that have led to Britain being in such dire straits and young British people having little to no hope about the future.

I was somewhat disappointed by Matt's book. The book reads like a first draft. If you compare his earlier work from the early 2010's there is a clear shift in tone. I would of expected more academic sources within the book considering Matt's background. I think it was rather rushed, sloppy editing and the book would have been smaller in pages numbers if the text was not so big.

Obviously the content of this book will be causing concern in certain areas, given the ideology of political Islam is fundamentally incompatible with western liberalism, and violent jihadists are not distorting Islam; in fact, they are interpreting the texts in a straightforward manner.

The book reveals in depth, all the ways multiculturalism has affected Britain, including those that do not normally get covered in the mainstream media, and it’s obvious to most people that the establishment has got no idea how to manage decline, instead turning a blind eye and denying the truth.

This book is designed to open the conversation about the problems and what can potentially happen to our society if we don’t act quickly.

The book extrapolates the data to show what is likely to happen if continuing on this course, as more boats arrive and taxpayers are expected to just keep paying whatever it takes to keep this pantomime going.

Politicians, civil servants, officials are not invested in results because their career advancement, are not based on them, merely supporting ideology. The book blows the lid on this broken system and is the first step to fixing it.

A thoroughly thought provoking and and quite frankly frightening book. It's full of frightening statistics and explains how various governments over the last thirty years have caused the decline in this country through allowing over immigration in order to keep wages low and make themselves look globally magnificent.

He touches on the subject of free speech and two tier policing and gives instances of how this is making the country so divisive.

I totally agree with him when he stipulates that the migrants are not at fault in the demise of this country, it is purely down to the elite ruling class who have blindly sat back and looked at the country through rose tinted glasses.

The people that have rated this book 1 star are exactly those foolish/blinded people being described in the book. Matt Goodwin is a highly educated, but down to earth, academic and sensible man who loves this country. A man who is a Professor of Politics, he knows his stuff. Beware all of you non-believers, hiding from, or ignoring the truth will get you nowhere. Take note of this man's words and think again. I have watched this country decline over the past 70 years.and all the words in this book are true. For those of us who truly care about this country the facts are all here. It's frightening, scary and it's shocking but it's all true. Ignore this book and you are ignoring the future. Keep your ears and eyes open, watch and listen to this man - he does not lie.

Matt tells it like it is.
The facts and nothing but the facts, and they are frightening.
He illustrates very vividly how current demographics will make the UK unrecognisable over the course of the next few years, and worse still how it will become a shadow of it's former self unless drastic action is taken and the current entitled powermongers removed.
The book is not about racial bias or discrimination, it is about the soul and continuity of our Nation.
Don't be fooled by the 1 star reviews; they come from individuals who are so imbued with ideological bias that they aren't even willing to acknowledge the truth of these arguments.

Normally you say you enjoyed a book but this one is like getting cold water thrown in your face. The book details how unchecked mass immigration, porous borders, suicidal empathy, two-tier multiculturalism, and elite-driven censorship are totally changing Britain’s identity and demographics.

The UK's government own data and forecasts show white British quickly becoming a minority and Islamic influence rapidly increasing without public support or consent. The UK is the canary in the coal mine with the rest of Europe and the US on the same path.  Sad.

Another great book from Matt!

If you want to know how the decline of Britain is happening this is the book for you. Matt makes a savage attack on the New Ruling Class and it's value system that puts the indigenous Brits always at the back of the queue, while fully supporting new comers even though they have not made their contrutions. The latter sections do read like the manifesto of Reform UK or sections of GB News. Nothing wrong there!

Compulsive Report

An interesting and incisive book. Full of disturbing facts, I was unaware of, although one can see and hear daily, the results of government folly and liberal idealism. Yes,these are still one man's opinion, one which many on the left will pour scorn upon, but the facts are clear and indisputable. If you are worried about our countries current direction but are unsure of the facts, read it!
This book should be read by everyone! IMV!

I think Matt Goodwin has been very brave to write this book. As we are not allowed free speech anymore, he has spoken out for all who value our heritage.
