Trooper is a self-made millionaire who has no interest in settling down with just one woman. The former drug dealer is enjoying retirement and living his best life with a different woman damn near every day and he has no plans on ever changing for anyone. Sophie is the CEO of a fortune 500 marketing firm. She’s very much open to finding love but, it has to be with a man who’s secure enough to handle a woman of her status. A simple mix-up at the valet sets off a high stakes journey for these two that is going to change their lives in ways neither one of them are ready for.
Ain’t No Love was a decent read but, the characters were horrible. I didn’t like Sophie or Trooper. He was disrespectful and she was stupid. This man got caught cheating not once but, twice and, each time, Sophie never walked away. He gaslit his way through an explanation and her silly azz just took him back. Like damn! At least let the man work for your forgiveness. I don’t have a problem with the cheating storyline but, I didn’t like how it was addressed. To write the FMC as stupid as Sophie was really pissed me off. Maddy and Carlos were no better. He was too comfortable constantly joking about being with other women because, he knew it would upset her. She was too comfortable letting him get away with that shyt because, she was so damn insecure. These characters were a hot azz mess and none of them had any redeeming qualities. I was too happy when I finally finished this book.

K.C. Mills will forever be one of my favorite authors. At this point, I’ve accepted that I need to slowly work my way through her entire catalog because everything I read from her hits. And considering sis has over 100 books? Pray for me 😂
This is actually a rerelease of a 2020 title, and it reminded me why K.C. has remained THAT girl in Black romance for so long.
What starts as a random mix-up at a restaurant quickly spirals into something much bigger. Yes, there’s romance and chemistry, but this is absolutely romantic suspense. Once Trooper realizes the danger surrounding Sophie, the entire energy of the story shifts into protect-her-at-all-costs mode and BABY… he was ready to burn the whole world down behind her.
The tension in this book wasn’t just romantic. There’s mystery, manipulation, family secrets, FBI involvement, and the constant feeling that Sophie is trapped inside a life carefully controlled by other people. Her father especially? Whew. A VILLAIN. Not just controlling, but deeply manipulative in the way he weaponizes money, influence, and power to control every aspect of his family’s lives. Honestly one of the most frustrating characters in the entire story.
Trooper and Sophie balanced each other well because underneath all his rough edges, Trooper becomes the one person truly trying to protect her instead of control her. And once the suspense plot really kicks in, the story becomes incredibly hard to put down.
Now I’m not even gonna lie… one thing about me? I HATE cheating in romance books 😭 It instantly makes me side-eye the MMC, so there were definitely moments where I struggled a little emotionally with the journey. But the suspense, emotional tension, and ride-or-die energy kept me locked in.
K.C. Mills really knows how to write high-stakes Black love wrapped in drama, danger, and emotional chaos.
Another book off the shelf. We keep reading with intention. 📚

Absolutely not. I was only at 33%, and Sophie’s naivety was very overwhelming and making my head hurt. I gave up. This one just wasn’t for me.
I read some of KC’s books back in 22/23 when I was new to the urban fiction world, and I remember enjoying them. I don’t remember her FMCs being this weak.
Sophie is twenty-six, but she’s written like a lovesick eighteen-year-old who can’t think for herself. I wish she would’ve acted like she was the prize. This man answered the phone for another woman while she was sitting right there in the car with him. Then he went ghost for a week, came back with an excuse, and she accepted it. Then he invited her to a party and didn’t even come greet her when she got there. He was showing her from the beginning that he could play in her face, and she kept rewarding him for it.
Troop was rude, arrogant, and never hid it. Yet Sophie was still falling in love. Like girl, how?
How was she not getting turned off? Sis was desperate and blinded by his looks. Then she rewarded him with some nookie. I was sitting there like, “Sophie, noooo, what are you doing?” The whole time I kept saying this mf gon’ cheat.
The way he flipped situations around on her was ridiculous. She’d be mad at him for something he did, and somehow she’d end up feeling guilty. Then he’d be the one upset, and she’d be worried about him being mad at her. Girl, stand up. At this point, Troop could’ve killed her mama in front of her, manipulated the situation, and somehow convinced Sophie it wasn’t his fault. That’s how little faith I had in her ability to think for herself.
I couldn’t stomach any more of it. Sophie is naive as hell.

DNF at 13% bc there was basically sex with no consent? While I FULLY understand what was trying to be communicated, Sophie fighting her attraction to Trooper, I don’t EVER want to read a woman saying anything other than yes— playing hard to get or not—and the man continuing to progress. ABSOLUTELY. NOT. I had to read a couple times to make sure I wasn’t missing it. If there’s not a CLEAR yes, there’s a problem. I don’t give a dang what her “body is saying”.
Also, Trooper was just immature as hell and I gathered enough from the first six chapters that I wasn’t interested in reading anymore.
At one point I considered KC one of my favorite authors. Lately… not so much. Everything she’s written recently has felt lazy and “here dang”. I understand we’re in a time of books where the demand for book after book is what the people want but there has to be a balance that doesn’t cause compromise.
Also, Trooper was just immature as hell and I gathered enough from the first six chapters that I wasn’t interested in reading anymore.

Fate…
I still feel the same way I felt when I first read this. I’m glad everyone got what they deserved… good and bad. The cheating still makes me give the side-eye bcuz… what?!? That’s the excuse and no consequence? Situation be d@mned🙄 bcuz how did that work out for you?!? Sophie kept getting mad only to give in after a lil flirting each time…. Girl why get mad in the first place?!? I liked Carlos and his bluntness. You didn’t have to worry about not knowing how he felt. I would have liked to read a scene or two involving Harold since he had so much pull and was portrayed as such a key point in the storyline.

Chiiiiile Troopers frontal lobe must not be fully developed. Some of his actions led me to believe it couldn’t be fully formed. And Sophie all I wanted her to do was stand on business just once but she let that dick lead her astray lol this was a drama filled read with characters doing things that made you question their logic. Best friends Sophie and Maddie begin situationships that turn to possessive somethings with Ty and Los (respectively). Each man would be a red flag IRL but we love a toxic BDE MMC. Really enjoyed this read.

Wow just to think a truck mixup at a restaurant started all of this beautiful love story in motion. Trooper was hood through and through but now legit. Carlos, still in the streets. Meeting Sophie and Maddie turned both of their worlds upside down. Story coming home changed everything for Alana as well as Sophie. In the end all obstacles for a HEA were eliminated. Great read, I loved how these hard men became soft for their women and finally found love!

This was good
How did all these people who were supposed to be the puppet masters end up being non-existent?
Trooper was a soldier and did anything necessary to make sure Sophie was happy and his. Some things went to far but all in all it worked out in the end. I loved him and Carlos friendship because they were down for recklessness when it came to each other.
This is a fun hood read.

Disappointed!!!
K.C. Mills is one of my favorite authors but these characters left a lot to be desired. There was some character development with the male characters however not so much with Sophie and Maddie. They came across as very childish. In addition to that, neither of the ladies had a life outside of Trooper and Carlos. And what life Sophie did have, she gave up quickly. It was just disappointing. I also thought that the plot was a little weak.

While I enjoyed watching Sophie and Trooper fall in love and thought this was a great story overall, I really wasn't the biggest fan of Trooper. It was clear that he loved Sophie, but he made some really bad decisions that really hurt Sophie and he didn't have patience or understanding with her, he just wanted her to get over it and I didn't like that. With Sophie being a young Black woman CEO I expected her to fight for herself more and make him sweat a little bit..

I enjoyed the story but Trooper was a little different. Sometimes he came off as wishy washy, like he was,unsure of himself. He kept stringing Orin on if you ask me then say he's not interested in her. Then Sophie seemed very shallow and didn't really habe,any features described.

I dont like cheating!
Trooper cheated on Sophie like twice and I feel like she gave him a two many passes but that's just me. I really like Carlos and Maddie they were lowkey stealing the show for me.

I didn’t like Trooper as a MMC. Some of things he did with his explanation made it seems like it was okay and it was not. Sophie gave him too much chances and let it go to easily. Loved Carlos though he had me cracking up.

Sophie and Trooper!
Great plot twists, multilayered characters, funny dialogue. Who could ask for more? This was a romance that kept me turning pages.

What a man! All the primary characters were well developed. Carlos was so funny, and Story was truly an OG. Good read.

Trooper pissed me off multiple times with his lying by omission and just doing dumb stuff. But eventually he got it together and I did like he and Sophie for one another. I love that they both learned from one another!
