An award-winning playwright with six plays staged in New York and regionally in the US, Andy returned to writing after thirty years in the international art world with the noir thriller CLIFFHANGER, Book One of the Zone of Deceit thriller trilogy. Taking us on a journey from 1984 to 1993, all three books of the Zone trilogy will be released in 2026. Follow along with Philip, Eleanor and Chris Sanders, a modern American family living a decade of Hitchcockian suspense deep in the zone.
The author A.P. Foster's purpose in writing thiis book, The Cover Up, was to explore the concept how the continuation of absolute power demands absolute secrecy. The author believed individual lives exploited like chess pieces by the various political networks. Mr. Foster observed how unregulated greed, political cover ups, and the systematic compromises of the 1980s had originated the global instabilities of today. He refered his stories to study history and comprehend the institutional crimes had never disappeared but only metamorphised into different shapes and forms only to expand across internationally over the last forty years. Because of this metamorphism, the public were deceived about how encompassing these institutions were in realtiy. The author highlighted how the truth did not bring peace but chaos to the lives of individuals and nations too. This was symbolized by the life of the protagonist in the story.
Mr. Foster had adopted the Hitchockian suspense model to his writing. The is meant he trapped ordinary characters in complex, dangerous, and unknow situations. He deliberately forces the readers to question the physical evidence presented in the story to question it was true. This was known as distorted realities. He had created what was known as pacing anchors. He had made deliberate use of cliffhangers in his story. The cliffhangers caused structural false herrings. This was a tool to maintain a fast paced story.
Mr. Foster's writing was unique because of his playwrighting background. This was evidenced in the manner in which the characters interact with each other and the pacing of the story. The plot was character driven as opposed to being overshadowed by the action of the story. The author conncected his story to the emotional reality of a single family unit. The result was a tightly written story.
The plot of the story recorded the dismantling of Philip Sanders' life. The dismantling occurred as he attempted to discover the truth behind the murder of his wife. The story was structured as a high stakes linear mystery. His wife's unreleased documentary unexpectedly and found its way to Philip. He must uncover the clues to find the proof which would exonerate him and he would no longer be a suspect in the death of his wife.
The author chose a linear mystery structure to accomplish the goals he set out in the writing of his story. The goals were to serve a specific narrative, thematic, and psychological goals. The author wanted to ensure the reader and Philip were piecing the parts of the puzzle together simultaneously. Therefore, a stronger bond of trust would be created betwen the readers and protagonist. This was a technique also used by playwrights in their plays which was known as the fourth wall.
This is certainly a book you do not want to miss reading. The book delivers a deeply paranoid atmosphere. The story is about a man's struggle against society. The author creates a puzzle within the story expecting the readers to piece the The story is set in the 1980s New York City. This creates a gritty tortured view of the city which is never publicized. If you enjoy interacting with a story, reading this book is a must.
I have to admit to spending a fair portion of The Coverup confused. I will admit that I'm not sure if it was the story or me, probably me. But whichever it was, I had a bit of trouble staying connected. However, I'm very glad that I stuck with it and look forward to Beyond the Beyond, Book 3. Mr. Foster has created multi-layered, realistic characters and plenty of action and suspense. His depiction of the world of the 1980s rings very true. (Having lived through that time, I didn't find anything I disagreed with.) A very enjoyable book, for the most part. I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens, and this review reflects my honest and voluntary opinion.
It took me a moment to get into the story as I had not read the first of the trilogy but it pulled me in right away! Emotionally wrenching at times it really connects the characters to the reader. I enjoyed how well thought out the storyline was and how even though the trilogy is not complete it doesn’t leave you hanging!! I’m looking forward to reading the next book!!
I received a copy of this from Goodreads Giveaway.
I did go back and read the first book in the trilogy Cliffhanger, I enjoyed this second installment better. The story itself and characters are very interesting but sometimes I feel there’s just too much going on and the plot gets a bit lost. Overall it was a good book and I’ll be interested in finishing the series when the final book is released.
I was totally lost to where this book was leading. The first one was better at plot and characters. There was more action which was intriguing. Thanks Book Siren.
