Hearth & Heartbreak centres around the most elusive Hawthorne sister, Maple. From the other books it was clear she was the type to shelter her loved ones from her own emotions, not wanting to make her problems everybody’s problems. Here we get to see her character in full: she prefers to fade into the background, she doesn’t want to take too much space, both emotionally and physically, she’s scared of dreaming too big and of not dreaming big enough. She puts others first and she’s both insecure and aware of her worth, in a way that perfectly encapsulates the “artist’s experience” of being on the one hand too self aware and on the other honest with one’s capabilities. She’s that “middle-child character” that is afraid of disappointing and of not being enough, that needs to feel useful and supportive without asking anything in return. Needless to say, she’s a very well shaped character, and this book explores her personality along with her relationship with the love interest: compared with the other books in the series, Maple’s story is more focused on the romance rather than on the professional growth that the other sisters had to go through, since Maple’s career path found closure with her co-owning the tavern with Juniper. And the romance in this book is probably the only realisation of the miscommunication trope that I’ve read that makes sense. Aris and Maple were former lovers, he then vanished without saying a word of explanation to Maple. When he comes back to Starbrook he keeps secrets from her, he still won’t explain why he ran away, he plays a game of push ans pull with Maple, both wanting to renew their relationship and to keep her at arm’s length. At this point in the series, had his character not been explored the way it was in the story, I would have found him insufferable because of the way he treats Maple (and the way he credits the tavern’s success to Maple and Maple alone, which made me want to fist fight him). But he’s an interesting character as well. He’s clearly suffered a big traumatic event when he got turned into a vampire without his consent and was forced to navigate his new situation on his own, which is the whole reason why he ran away and tried to keep his condition from Maple when he came back...because he’s not fully accepted it himself. The risk of not being accepted by Maple or hurting would be too much for him, there would be no way for him to come to terms with the fact that he’s irreversibly changed. And this makes their dynamic all the more compelling, especially because they’re not “compatible” any more. Maple’s a baker, she shows her love by feeding the people around her with her art, it’s her way of being part of their lives and showing that she cares. But she can’t do the same with Aris: human food doesn’t satiate his appetite the same way that blood does, and Maple can’t give that same love she gives everybody else she cooks for because she doesn’t know that he’s a vampire. He feels too strong not to be a danger to Maple, and the fact that his enhanced sense make him aware of Maple’s heart condition makes his all the more reluctant to be with her.
It’s pretty obvious at this point that I ate this up. The only issue I had with this was the rushed ending, which was a weak point in the other books as well, and the fact that Maple and Isadora’s relationship wasn’t explored at all despite the characters’ claims of getting closer (”But getting to know her again has been lovely.”). Considering that Maple was Isadora’s friend before she was Aris’ girlfriend, it’s a bit disappointing, although the whole reason for the reunion being Isadora’s wedding can be seen as a justification for the lack of meaningful interactions between the two.
Overall I really liked Maple’s story and I can’t wait to read Rowan’s, who is the more stoic of the Hawthorne sisters and her role in Laurel’s book left me quite curious.

Oh the ✨YEARNING✨
Another book down in the Witches of Starbrook series and I am still so in love with this whole town and family Lavendelle has created for us to read 💕
This is Maple and Aris’s story, a second-chance, hidden identity, cozy paranormal masterpiece. The ✨yearning✨ in this book was absolutely top tier. Like YEARS of yearning, complete with unsent letters professing undying (literally) love and devotion. I really loved these characters, even though I sometimes wanted to smack their heads together and make them just freaking talk 😂
I adore Maple, and always have. Throughout the series she has been a steady presence, kind, loving and eternally optimistic. She’s the kind of character that makes you want to hug her cause you just know she gives the best hugs and then follows it up by making you a fresh baked treat. I loved seeing more of who she was beyond that sunshine persona, and my heart hurt for her knowing just how much she was using that happiness as a mask.
Aris is exactly what I want from a tortured ex lover. He ran away at first because of something unavoidable, but he stayed away because he was afraid. Then he comes back and the draw to Maple is still there and unfortunately for him, unavoidable because his sister is a schemer 😂 He’s the one I most wanted to yell at, because for as much as he tells her to “use your words darling” (🥵) this man absolutely did not use enough of his 💀
Their relationship felt very realistic for a second chance romance and I did really love the way they kept being drawn together despite everything. The only thing keeping this from being a full 5-star read for me is purely personal taste. Second chance romances with heavy a miscommunication trope just aren’t usually my favorite, even when they’re done well. If those are tropes you love, though, paired with excellently crafted cozy paranormal vibes and a small town that will immediately steal your heart, this is absolutely the book for you ❤️❤️❤️

I want to start this review by saying that I binged the first 3 books in this series and loved them! Easy 4+ stars for all of them! I will absolutely be continuing this series!
Now, for this specific book, Heart and Heartbreak! I loved the plus-size rep, the chronic illness rep, and the Suki-from-Gilmore-Girls energy Maple brought! However, I will say that this book often felt quite rushed. A lot of scenes weren’t as fleshed out as I would have liked, and t could be quite choppy from one scene to the next. This wasn’t an issue in past books, so maybe a tighter timeline to get the book out might have contributed?
I also unfortunately could not STAND the level at which their miscommunication just took over everything. Literally their entire everything could have been solved with one conversation and it was infuriating watching both of them just not say a damn wordddddd. I could barely see what they saw in each other because they withheld so much of themselves.
All this to say, this was not my favourite book. BUT the first 3 books are so strong and I will absolutely be finishing the series and rereading it in the future! I just might skip this one during a reread because the intense miscommunication trope made me want to pass away.
BUT if you’re into miscommunication tropes or have major avoidant tendencies yourself, you might see yourself in the characters more than I did!

Cozy second chance
It’s second chance romance with a paranormal bite - this is Hearth and Heartbreak.
Maple is a hearth witch, a baker, and a sister. Oh, and the woman who was abandoned by her ex with no explanation years ago. Now he’s back in town for his sister’s wedding and to say things are awkward would be an understatement.
Aris has so much he wishes he could tell Maple. He never left her willingly. He forced himself to leave after he was turned into a vampire against his will. Now he is back and doesn’t know how he’ll leave her again.
This was a lovely second chance romance. Aris and Maple are both emotionally vulnerable, and make decisions based on incomplete information. Maple has to allow herself to open up to Aris, while he needs to accept Maple’s decision to love him - or not.
The spice is definitely spicing in a very open door way in this book. The love never really disappeared, but allowing themselves to admit that takes time. There’s some great POTS representation and body positivity across the book, as well as dealing with issues of consent.
This is the fourth book in a series about a family of witches, but it is easy to read as a standalone.
If you are after a beautiful cozy second chance romance, I absolutely recommend Hearth and Heartbreak.

I wish I was a Hawthorne sister so badly!!! From the very first book on this series I wanted to learn more about Maple! She has always been a subtle caretaker with her abilities and learning she has been doing all of that while battling a chronic illness was wild and inspiring. I loved Aris immediately, even while being so frustrated he wouldn’t just communicate with Maple. I will always eat up a second chance where it’s so clear they never stopped caring and loving each other. I loved that although they did in many ways just jump back into things, they also were rebuilding and starting fresh as they got to know each other again.
I also was so happy to be back in Starbrook without the fear of demons coming to attack my girls, still plenty of drama but the energy was different! I can’t wait to see what is in store for Rowan (and Seth!!) 🥹

This is such a comfort series for me. I really love this authors writing and find it to be so comforting and cozy. Aris and Maple were so cute and I enjoyed their relationship. I thought they had great chemistry. I love the representation that this author their rights into all of their books. And I can’t wait to read more in this series.

This one was angsty and romantic
Aris was such a lover boy was down bad always and while I did want some flashbacks of both maple and aris before the break up just get more of them I still feel like it written really well I can still there love just shine through and how both were in pain through the time they were apart and it did makes sense why he would stay away a lot of times the break doesn't always feel justified but I totally get it and even with the hurt and distrust they come back to each other to easily what I did want to know know more was a little more in the end but overall great!

The previous entries in the series were about discovering new love, and opening up connections. Hearth and Heartbreak turns that all on its head. Aris has disappeared for 5 years, leaving Maple Hawthorne alone with her heartbreak.
But he returns for his twin sisters wedding celebrations - now a vampire!
These two had so much between them, and yet they had so much keeping them apart.
I couldnt put this trainwreck down because it was so full of joy and hope that kept everything moving until the HEA finally arrived.

ARC Reader here! I enjoyed this book. It was not my favorite of the series so far, but it was still very enjoyable. Maple and Aris are a fun couple. I enjoy reading about people with disabilities, so to find that was very cool! All in all, a good addition to the Hawthorne witch’s stories. I very much enjoy this world that Lavendelle is creating, and I love reading about characters in Starbrook. She weaves characters in and out very well that makes each interaction more powerful.

Another incredible story from Elle Lavendelle! This is the fourth book in the Witches of Starbrook series. Maple and Aris's story is a second-chance romance with a paranormal Witch x Vampire flair. It is a story of healing and growth.
The author did an amazing job of showing that familiarity doesn't mean a relationship settles into something repetitive or boring. Quite the opposite, in fact. 🥵 I particularly appreciated the duality of the characters; their personalities with their families and community paint a very different picture from who they are behind closed doors.
Could you read this as a standalone? I think so. However, I think getting the perspective of the Hawthorne sisters in the first three books helps paint a more robust picture of Maple before you begin her story.
I highly recommend the whole series (so far… this is not a completed series), and I can't wait for the next book!

This was a very enjoyable, cozy read! I have not read the other interconnected standalones, but at no point did I find myself confused because of that. I liked this enough that I will probably go back to read the others.
I used to think that I didn't like second chance romances but honestly I've become a big fan of this trope. The angst and the yearning is just so good.
I loved Maple and Aris' dynamic though I do wish she would have made him grovel a bit more.

This was a very sweet and at times, very heartbreaking book. I cried no less than two times but I enjoyed Maple & Aris's story all the same.
And for what feels like the first time ever, I didn't hate the 3rd act breakup, it felt like the natural flow of their relationship at that point and made them reconnecting even more important.
I will say I was very surprised by Aris's 2nd secret, I didn't see that one coming!
As usual, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest in the series!

Another great Witches of Starbrook instalment! I had to wait until I got home to read it but I finished it in a (late) evening.
I love a vampire romance, and second chances is right up my alley. If miscommunication or lack of communication bugs you please be aware it is the main source of tension in this book.
We love a plus size FMC with no shying away from physical descriptions of her body.
Can’t wait for the next one!

Hearth & Heartbreak is a fast paced romantasy that tells of the story of Maple and Aris. I really enjoyed the buildup of the story and also the continued inclusion of the Hawthorne sisters. There was a lot of back and forth in the main character’s relationship, but concludes with a happy ending. If you like relatable main character’s, second chance romances, and fantasy this is a great read to pick up.

I love the cosy writing style of these books.
I could not wait to be back in this series again and it did not disappoint.
I was along for the ride reading the two main characters history as well as the angst of the push and pull from the moment they meet again.

Representation and Magic
The FMC is plus size and has POTS, and it's lovely to see representation of both! The story itself is fantastic and I adore Lavendelle's writing. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone, but the series is wonderful!

You can feel Aris and maple’s heartbreak and yearning. Beautiful story of love, family, forgiveness, and finding yourself again. Maple and Aris are truly meant for each other. Is there going to be a love story between Seth and Dave? Excited to see who Rowan finds her love story with.

Though I found the beginning of the book very interesting, and wanted all good things for Maple and Aris, I found the recurring lack of communication to be too much.

The Witches of Starbrook series is so witchy and cozy. I enjoyed this one as much as I enjoyed the others in the series. Aris was such a heartbreaking character and I was happy to see Maple and him have a happy ending that they worked so hard for.

While I found this book entertaining. I do not think I would reread it. The writing was well done, but I wish the storyline could’ve had more in certain parts.

I absolutely adore Maple, she is such a ray of sunshine and love for those around her, even though she is still dealing with the trauma of her own heartbreak, year after Aris left her without a word. She works herd to bring joy to the people around her, and the lives she touches, even if it is only for a moment through the food she makes for them.
She hold so much love for Aris, even after all the heartache he put her through when he disappeared, that it really is a wonder that, despite that heartache, she allows him close to her heart all over again, even with the pieces of the truth he’s so obviously hiding.
Aris on the other hand, has such a shy personality, preferring to keep himself if he can’t be with Maple, than interact with a bunch of strangers. Even his changing from human to vampire didn’t change that part of his personality; nor did it effect his love for Maple. It did however, create a fear in him that he would harm her, or frighten her beyond repair.
I love that this incredibly cute couple got a second change at love. Aris spend so long trying to keep himself at a distance from Maple, even after they start seeing each other again, that he doesn’t even realize a mate bond has been created.

Men are stupid and Aris is terrible. I didn’t like him at all. And Maple, the absolutely sweet nugget she is, is just all “aw, babe. Don’t worry, I’ll just take what I can get?! If that’s ok?!” Like girl… come on! When she finally spoke up for herself I was like YESSSSSS…. Only for her to just be like but forget it, an apology is enough for the 5+ years of heartbreak, lack of communication and messing me around for a few months.
