Nothing Has Changed was about 25-year-old Calla Ray, a translator, and 28-year-old Maddox Kane, the CEO of Kane Industrial, a global autonomous shipping empire.
Maddox was Calla's (former) best friend's older brother, and she had loved him for ten years. For the past five years, she had been his secret lover. When she told him that his sister had invited them to the family dinner on Sunday, he reminded her that they didn't do "family gatherings" together. The following Monday, after he left for work, Serena made Calla viciously aware of his engagement to Savannah Hawthorne, the heiress of the Hawthorne European shipping company. Serena told her it was time for her to wake up, pack her bags, and get out of her brother's life. When Calla called to ask Maddox if it was true, he did not deny the engagement. He just said it didn't change anything between them. When he summoned her to the penthouse, he told her what his parents had done, and that it "boxed him in" to a merger he couldn't break. She asked him if he was marrying the other woman; he said there would be "a public engagement. Just for show," to protect the business stock from tanking. When she asked if he expected her to sit back and watch him get engaged to another woman, he told her it wasn't real. The following Saturday, she watched the live-streaming news, during which she heard him say, "Savannah is an extraordinary woman. We are both looking forward to building a very prosperous future together." For the next four weeks, Maddox stayed away because he couldn't afford "a scandal". And every encrypted message he sent saying "it means nothing" only solidified the distance. It was two weeks before she saw him again, and when she tried to talk to him, he informed her that "absolutely nothing scandalous can happen right now. Do you understand?... I need you to be the one thing in my life that doesn't require management. It's just for a few more months. I need you to understand that". And while he relaxed as she said that she understood, he didn't realize that at that exact moment, Calla's life no longer aligned with his. Rather than breaking down, Calla returned home, contacted her father, a retired attorney, told him her predicament, and planned her strategic exit.
A month after she left, Serena went to Maddox's office and asked him what if Calla decided to leave him, only to see a look of panic start to form in his eyes, even though he verbally denied that Calla would do so. But once Serena left his office, he started checking his messages and suddenly realized it had been almost a month since he had last received a text message from her. The panic set in for real, and he canceled a board meeting to race to her apartment, only to come to a screeching halt outside her door...because pacing back and forth in front of it was his sister...who had just left his office after asking what if Calla decided to leave him. After entering the apartment, he knew she was gone from the stale air. Confirming her things were gone, he turned to his sister and demanded to know what she had done. It would be another six years before he saw Calla again.
While this story was full of angst, drama, and an emotional rollercoaster with more than its fair share of twists and turns, the fact that it was so drawn out detracted from its viability. Unlike the previous books I've read by this author, the fact that this story took so many years to conclude was a detriment to its likability. He found her after six years of searching, but for it to take even more years for the relationship to finally reach even a remotely acceptable ending was asking too much of the reader to believe. All that did was make the FMC look like a coldhearted b*tch...and she wasn't one. But the longer she held out from loving the MMC, the worse it got, and that was no way to end a potentially good story.
While both main characters were fully developed, it seemed only the FMC was mature. The MMC was arrogant and had an ego the size of Gibraltar, and when life came to a head, he crashed and burned. He did manage to do some growing (as did the FMC), but that growth took way too many years, and that was the downfall of the story. Plus, there were too many unresolved issues, and this book deserved a better ending than it was given, because it wasn't an HEA, and it was barely an HFN. With that knowledge, this book only earned a two-star rating.
I mean I know they will get together but I wanted to see it. He definitely groveled and was celibate, I think, while they were apart for six years and then 2 years while he tried to won her back. The boys were so cute. I love the way this author writes children. They are too adorable. Several things in this novel surprised me. How she told them right away he was their Father. I hate when the heroines don't do that. It annoys me. Then that he didn't blame her for keeping them from him. He owned his mistake and I liked that alot. Was he a good man at the beginning? Absolutely not! I despised him but by the end, I definitely liked him. He definitely regretted his actions. And the heroine had a spine. I liked that the most.
Five stars for the how the book ends. I absolutely loved the female lead and I don’t blame her for any of the stances she took. I will also say, she was never a mistress even though she wasn’t given an official title prior to his engagement announcement and he gets what he deserves.
A couple of things — first off, the boys are older than three at the end. They are closer to six but the FMC thinks about the bookstore incident being three years ago. That incident happened before she started showing. So it should have been six years ago.
Second there is no HEA. The MMC understands now that his life centers on her and the twins. And the end is her offering her hand? Puhleeze…
Not a favorite. It’s short enough that another chapter or two should have been added to include a HEA or at minimum a HFN. Or an epilogue five years later where they are definitely together, married and with more children.
Also, the mother, sister, and fake fiancée stories didn’t really wrap up satisfactorily. Just my opinion…
KU and while I like this author a lot, I didn’t resonate with this story at all. Sorry,
Maddox has given Calla no promises, no future. Just nothing. An engagement to another woman sets into motion Calla deciding to leave when she discovers she will be having his twins. Maddox learns the hard way how his actions caused him to lose the woman he loved.
The story was well written, but was not my favorite. I enjoy reading more angst between the two main characters. Still, I enjoyed reading something written with intelligence.
The first half was great. All of the angst build up. Tooooo long for the groveling and time stamps. Plus there were discrepancies throughout which some reviewers noted. Questions I had like, Serena was her bf but then turned on her without any build up to that, etc. So have at it, you may enjoy the second half more.
Okay as far as second chance romance. Liked the other books better from this author but not this one. Boring since half of the book was more about telling daily routine. The ending is more of a potential of the h getting back together. Not as polish or captivating in my opinion.
After 5 years kept in the shadows, Calla walks away from Maddox with a secret he wouldn't want exposed. It took him 6 long years to find her and he was determined to get her back. Highly recommended
to the 6 people that gave this 5 stars please explain to me why. I can't not finish a book but this was the first one I didn't really want to. The twins are 5 and then 6 but the incident in the store still happened 3 years ago. Why was Serena no longer friendly to her best friend. Why keep everything private for ten years if his family knew about it. She moved in with her parents but they are never seen, their thoughts upon his return never mentioned. The wording made me want to grab a dictionary half the time. I did give it 2 stars because it takes bravery to put your words out there.
This one is good but unrealistic which is fine but sometimes it was too much. The writing is good, some editing is needed. This is the story of a young woman who didn’t value herself at all in her love for the MMC, but finally hits rock bottom and finds the inner strength to lift herself up to protect her unborn baby and herself. This story is of a journey of growth for both main characters.
Calls loved him for ten years, yet he never realized how he felt until it was too late. Once she is gone, the king of Kane Industries becomes more ruthless to his competitors and uncontrollable. Looking for a needle in a haystack he completely unravels into block of ice searching the world over to try to find her. Once he does, his penance is absolute. Beautifully written!
