[novel chapters: 1-65/601]

The novel really turned out to be much better than the manhwa. Starting The Broken Ring, I didn’t think I’d become so engrossed in the story that after the latest manhwa chapter, I’d be running to read the books it was based on, but that’s exactly what happened. I was pretty much desperate to read all the books, but it was nearly impossible to find them all available in English online. Only the first two books were translated and available to buy on Amazon—so I got those—but the rest were nowhere to be found. The whole series consists of ten books, with the last two being side stories. The only source for the third and the rest of the books was Tappytoon, which is translating three chapters a week, so that's where I'll continue reading the third book and the rest in the future when they translate them. I've heard that the translation isn't the best, and that the Tappytoon version even adds sentences that weren’t in the original book, but I was so eager to read it that I honestly didn’t mind. I'm actually really glad I read the novel too, since the manhwa left out some scenes, dialogues, and character thoughts that I think were pretty important to the story.

The rest of my review contains spoilers!

If you plan to read this story, I think it’s important to know that it’s the kind of story where you definitely need to trust the process. It starts off in a way that might make people dislike the book and stop reading, which I completely understand—I would have done the same if I hadn’t read the spoilers, but thankfully, I saw them, and I continued, which it’s something I’ll never regret as The Broken Ring turned out to be one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. Two people, four timelines, the love they shared in each of them, and the countless challenges they faced along the way, which certainly didn’t make their love story an easy one.

I think the biggest issue people have with The Broken Ring—the one I mentioned in my last paragraph—is the fact that Cárcel slept with a lot of women before he and Inés were married. Listen, I absolutely despise cheaters and men who are manwhores. Seriously, I wish them well. In hell. And I’m not trying to justify Cárcel’s cheating at the beginning of their story—I hate it. I hate that he was sleeping around so much. But this isn’t your typical "cheating case". This book definitely doesn’t normalize cheating either, as people, Inés’ family, and especially her father shame him for it and weren’t happy that he was marrying her. But, as I said, it’s not your usual "cheating in books" situation.

The heroine—Inés, a woman from a very important noble family, after surviving, as far as she knows, two previous lives, wasn't strong enough to enter another relationship. So, in her fourth life, she made a plan at the age of six to marry Cárcel, knowing that he would eventually cheat and sleep with many other women. He was the most angelic and handsome boy in the entire kingdom, and every woman wanted him, so he was the perfect candidate for her plan. Since she was six, she had been basically "manipulating" him to cheat and lose interest in her completely, so eventually she could divorce him and be left alone. I know it sounds pretty insane, but she had her reasons. In her second life, she committed suicide because Oscar—the future emperor/prince, who married her—was raping her and constantly cheating, which led to her miscarrying four times. He blamed her for the miscarriages, rather than his own venereal diseases. On top of that, his family treated her horribly. In her third life, she ran away with a painter to escape her second life's marriage to the prince. At first, things seemed fine—she married the painter and had a baby with him—but it didn't last long. In the end, her brother killed the painter, and the royal family planned to murder her baby. Desperate, she took her own life and her child's to escape the horrors they were about to face. Her past lives were absolutely awful, so I'm not surprised at how she acted in her fourth life, or why she pushed Cárcel to be with other women. She knew that once he did, she would be able to file for divorce and ultimately be left alone, and eventually die of old age rather than by suicide. So yes, Cárcel cheated on her, and I will always hate him for that, but there's more to the story. What's crucial to understand is that Cárcel loved her in all four of their lives, even when they weren't together in two of them. He never married anyone else in any of his lives because he always loved only Inés. He even helped her husband—the painter she had a child with—and had to watch her being married to Oscar, who basically tortured her. So yes, yes, yes, I know he cheated at the beginning when they were still engaged in their fourth life, but his love for her, and the fact that she was his one and only true love across all his lives, is enough for me to overlook the cheating.

But finally moving to the main characters, specifically Inés Valeztena de Pérez. I absolutely loved her. She invented the definition of a strong heroine. Despite enduring hell in almost all of her lives, she still had the power to keep going. She was extremely smart, intelligent, and sarcastic (which I love about her), funny, and just everything I love about female main characters.

"Some women would daydream about a wedding after a simple exchange of smiles. As for Inés, she was the type to daydream about the divorce and the custody discussions after the wedding."

"Whenever these governesses started their lessons by teaching her how to obey her future husband, she inevitably fired the governess. Therefore, she never had a governess for more than four days."

Cárcel Escalante de Esposa—our hero who I hated at the beginning but grew to love with every chapter. I know what he did while they were still engaged was unacceptable, and I hate him for it. However, just before their marriage and after their wedding, he became the most faithful man ever, completely obsessed with his wife. Even when Inés tried to surround him with beautiful women to fulfill her plan to make him cheat on her, he never did—all he saw was Inés. He even bought her a house he heard had saved someone's marriage, so they could be together. He would unexpectedly smile at work while thinking about her, and people were amazed at the sight. He was STARVED for her—seriously, STARVED—but still respected her boundaries, which later in the story made her more open and brave in her sexual life. And that's just a glimpse, as he did so much more in the next books.

"He could tolerate just about anything to have Inés Escalante share his name and bedroom for the rest of his life."

“At this rate, you’ll be carrying me around the house by tomorrow morning,” Inés muttered.
“Actually, if you don’t mind, I would happily—”
“I do mind,” Inés said firmly.
“I guessed as much,” Cárcel replied."

"Inés clearly didn’t care for his opinion, and Cárcel liked that about her."

"Everything about Inés was driving him insane."

Me at this information:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ description

And, he definitely was a boob man.

I also saw on Twitter that each volume's cover has a meaning, and the first book features a sample of ceremonial uniform from Cárcel's wedding attire—I love it.

But anyway, I just love this story so much, despite it not being something I usually enjoy, because of the manwhore hero. I just can’t wait to read the next books to find out how Inés and Cárcel’s story ends. The day they announce that this series will be published in paperback, I will definitely be the first in line to buy it.

THIS STORY.

Fuck.

Fuck everything. Fuck her brother, her father, her family, and the trash prince...

What a mess...

It’s fascinating, watching this… because I’m in awe of the art despite how tragic it all is. This isn't your typical reincarnation story . She deserves so much better than any of these people around her.

Heads up, this is a very good, complicated and angst story and it's filled with some heavy stuff such as;
⚠ bad parents
⚠ Scheming FL
⚠ ML who starts as a asshole and cheater
⚠ Depression
⚠ Suicide
⚠ Sad backstory
⚠ Long but steady development

And even though the story's tagged as fantasy, this manhwa's story also heavily discusses commentary on human nature, our ambitiousness and covetuous desires; the dark sides of being human.

Don't read this if you're too young or your concept of love is perfect. There is no such thing as a fairytale and this story proves it harsly.

THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS:
The fact that at the beginning the male lead doesn't really respect the FL, basically acts like an entitled ass and tarnishes her reputation in society by playing around should have had made me despise and even drop this story since I really cant stand cheaters. However, something about it really hooked me up.

For sure, I've thought after finding out the female lead doesn't care about his cheating habits, male lead was gonna be suddenly interested in her and this was gonna turn into a trash party.

However, be sured, this is not the case here.

Firstly; while I do heavily despise cheating/cheaters and male lead does need a good smack to wake up here, there were some big hints the male lead was clearly written to come off as an asshole early on FOR A REASON. You're meant to hate him so that you get that fun emotional about-face later on when you find out more about him later. So dont judge and remember all the fun of this genre is in the emotional journey, so let people have theirs, people.

Secondly; I just cant make myself hate him. He is just.... he feels so real.

Some people say the female lead encouraged and even brainwashed him into cheating - which I couldnt get my head around in the beginning (like how could someone do that, this felt like a cheap trick to justify the ML's cheating) but she kinda did that when you think about it. She is really scheming... to the point what the fuck, really. This girl actually gets memories from her past lives which were all misarable so she says enough is enough and decides to ''I must chose a guy, make him totally lose interest in me and make him cheat on me to survive this life''.

Like... who in the fucking right mind does that?

And male lead, I feel like, only cheats because he wanted 'attention of the FL' and he swears he is going to be loyal when they married anyway and bla bla bla.

THIS FUCKING TWO IDIOTS DO DESERVE EACH OTHER.

UGH.

I mean, can you imagine?

Ah, what a drama and the fun only started...

The real son of bitch is the crown prince anyway whom should have his body cut and have salt and acid poured on his skin. Oh and let us cut his dick off and shove it so far down his throat as he chokes on blood, guys. Someone stop me before I fucking kill that son of a bitch.

AHEM.

(☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞

Thirdly; the author does not justify cheating or does not mean us to romanticize and glorify or tolerate the main characters' mistakes in this story, she means us to view them in a neutral way, to accept them of what they were and what they could be. The cheating part or the other stuff aren't central part of the story, they are just there to make our characters come as more human and real. It's included to mock the lives of high society. After all, you know what they say, the higher you are in social status, the more you lose your perspective of what's really life's true meaning.

Anyway, I honestly think if you have a preference of reading linear structure of plot and like stories that have only a single predictable destination: MC wins against the bad, ends up with the love interest) then this one's not for you.

If your idea of a well-written character exclude: imperfect or flawed, raw and complex then better drop this.

If your main goal in reading this is to ship the main characters, better prepare yourself for disappoinments and frustrations.

This isn't your typical historical manhwa.

It deserves to be given a chance, however.

THE HUMOR:
A story filled with some dark stuff really shouldnt have humor in it but IT DOES and it is fucking good. The humor is so well timed and placed, when we learned female lead's previous lifes and when she went through it caught me suprised and I kinda missed the fun parts.

Like:

LMFAO HE IS SO FREAKING ENTERTAINING HAHAHA KEEP IT UP ML.

A guy trying to hide his eraction shouldnt be this fun but boy, it sure is.

What a clown.

☛🤡☚

AHEM.

(☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞

THE ART: JUST GORGEOUS.

Also the crown prince of the first life:

Overall; Give it a chance, just know it isnt a fairytale and if it's possible read huge amount of chapters in one sitting so that you can see female lead is as much as messed up as the male lead.

4.5 stars - Manhwa first season

This story is another one based on coming back in time. But besides the confusing beginning, I really enjoyed it.

Because while on her first life she tried to be the perfect noble woman and marry the prince (which led her to a terrible life), she came on her second life seeking for anything that wasn't related with nobleness, just a normal person.

This led her to be with an Artist, who could not provide for her a good life, but always treated her as his everything. But that wasn't enough, since her family keeps seeking her and in the end just killed her and made her kill herself again while killing her son.

In the end, when she came back for the third time, her mind is shattered and she is just trying to do everything to give her any resemblance of freedom, while she fights with memories from past life's.

In this situation she decides to marry Carcel, he is so powerful as the prince, so no one could stop her.

I have to say that he was an utterly asshole, and read the first episodes was really frustrating. But overall after they get married, he just keep trying to be with her and become faithful, while the secrets about her keep popping everywhere.

In the end, it's a sad story because she can lose him even before realizing that they love each other (her goal is to make him have a affair so she could seek divorce). But it's one that keeped me entertained till the end.

Finished season one of the manhwa. Time travel themes always make my heart clench. This reminds me so much of "The Fantasie of a Stepmother", both FL experiencing such a horrible life before their death. I just loved it, I binged read all 40 chapters in one sitting.

Read the english version of this in Mangatoto. Only S1 is uploaded there. Good book tho and I like the characters. Hopefully, Ines will have a good character development. Can't wait to see how her feelings will bloom.

I love this novel like you have no idea.

All the characters are questionable (), but overall is a very enjoyable and well-developed story. I'll extend this review later on but I'd definitely recommend reading this to others.

Surprisingly high-quality and enjoyable. The pacing is outstanding, the big reveals feel big and well placed, and the characters make decisions that make sense. Not only that, but the world is dripping with depth and the characters are likable in somewhat morally gray ways. Honestly, one of few books I'd wholeheartedly recommend.
